Police rescue kidnap victim tied inside hotel toilet in Ebonyi

The Ebonyi State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on violent crime, rescuing a kidnapped victim found tied up inside a hotel toilet.

The police also foiled an armed robbery attack in two separate operations that unfolded over a 48-hour period.

According to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, the kidnap incident occurred on 13th November 2025 in the Ezzangbo axis of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, where a three-man gang abducted one Obasi ThankGod.

The kidnappers, said to have been terrorising the area for some time, blindfolded and tied up their victim before hiding him inside a hotel toilet while they negotiated a ransom of ₦5 million with his family.

The police said the abductors abandoned him in the concealed location believing it would delay detection and give them enough time to secure the ransom.

However, the Command’s intelligence unit, acting on credible leads, tracked the suspects’ movements and traced the hideout.

Mr Ukandu said Police operatives stormed the facility, rescued the victim alive, and arrested three suspects identified as Uchenna Ogbozuru, Ebuka Ejiogu, and Chizoba Idenyi Ogwa.

The statement noted that the suspects are in police custody and will be prosecuted at the end of investigations.

Mr Ukandu said the rescue operation came barely a day after another successful operation by the Command.

He said, “On 2th November 2025, police patrol teams along the Ehamufu–Nkalagu Road heard sporadic gunshots and distress screams.

“Responding swiftly, the officers moved toward the noise and discovered Ali Solomon struggling with three armed robbers who were attempting to dispossess him of his motorcycle.

“Upon seeing the police, the armed men opened fire. The operatives returned fire, neutralising one of the suspects while the others escaped into the surrounding bushes”.

Mr Ukandu said a loaded AK-47 rifle containing ten rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene while fhe victim, Solomon, was safely evacuated and the area secured.

Reacting to the two incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Adaku Uche-Anya, praised the officers for their professionalism, courage and timely intervention.

She reaffirmed the Command’s determination to make Ebonyi State unsafe for criminal elements, stressing that police operations and intelligence surveillance would be further intensified across vulnerable locations.

CP Uche-Anya also commended residents of the state for what she described as “consistent and credible flow of information,” which, she said, has continued to strengthen the police in its crime-fighting duties.

She urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, assuring that all reports would be handled with utmost confidentiality.

Revamped Benin Navy warship departs Lagos on homeward voyage

The Nigerian Navy has handed over the rehabilitated Benin Navy Ship (BNS) Matelot Brice Kpomassé, to the Republic of Benin, marking the successful completion of the vessel’s first docking and overhaul.

Casting off from the Naval Dockyard Limited (NDL), Victoria Island, Lagos, where it was overhauled, Thursday morning, the warship set sail for Cotonou on its homeward voyage.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, said the refit exemplified the practical benefits of regional collaboration under the Yaoundé Architecture- the framework guiding joint maritime operations among Gulf of Guinea (GoG) nations.

Abbas who was represented by the

Admiral Superintendent, Naval Dockyard, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu, said: “One of the key components of maritime security is the ability to deploy assets effectively for joint operations

“Through the capacity available at the Naval Dockyard and the guidance of our political and military leadership, we have created an environment that ensures both Nigeria and the Republic of Benin have more operational vessels for shared patrols and enhanced maritime surveillance.”

He noted that the collaboration between both navies was facilitated through the Joint Maritime Command Centre (JMCC) in Cotonou, which promotes intelligence sharing and operational coordination among member states. “Maintenance of naval assets is capital-intensive, but our proximity and established maintenance capacity have enabled us to provide cost-effective technical support to the Benin Navy,” he added.

The CNS revealed that several Benin Navy vessels have now been successfully refitted by the Dockyard, with two more ships expected for delivery within the next few weeks.

“Our goal is to complete the remaining three vessels before the end of this year or early next year. The Benin Navy has expressed satisfaction with our work, and we are finalizing an annual maintenance agreement that underscores their confidence in our technical expertise.”

He emphasized that the Dockyard adheres strictly to international standards and recognized classification rules in all repair works. “Our welders, mechanics, and technicians are certified and periodically evaluated to meet global standards,” he said, adding that the partnership reflected a model of regional self-reliance that reduces dependence on costly foreign facilities.

Responding to questions during an interview, Rear Admiral Shehu disclosed that the success of the Nigeria-Benin partnership has attracted interest from other Gulf of Guinea nations, including Equatorial Guinea, Congo, and Gabon. “Their defense advisors have approached our Defense Intelligence Agency for insights into the model.

“While discussions are still ongoing, we are optimistic that this cooperative approach will soon extend across the region, strengthening defense ties and promoting a safer Gulf of Guinea,” he said.

Representing the Chief of Naval Staff of the Republic of Benin, Commodore Alexandre Hounkpatin, Captain Mohamed Idrissou, who is the Director of Military Organisation and Personnel, commended the Nigerian Navy for its professionalism and commitment. “Having a reliable partner just two hours away from our base ensures rapid technical intervention and keeps our ships mission-ready,” Captain Idrissou said. “This partnership is a remarkable example of regional cooperation in action.”

He explained that Matelot Brice Kpomassé is the third Benin Navy vessel to undergo refit at the Naval Dockyard, with all three ships set to resume coastal patrols upon return. “Our fleet consists of vessels from different technical origins, both European and Chinese, each with unique maintenance needs. Before now, the lack of nearby facilities limited our capacity to maintain them. With Nigeria’s Dockyard, we have found a dependable partner that delivers world-class maintenance support,” he said.

Captain Idrissou reaffirmed his country’s commitment to sustaining the partnership, noting that maritime insecurity remains a shared challenge in the Gulf of Guinea. “Every country in the region must build its capacity to secure its waters and avoid becoming the weak link in our collective maritime security chain,” he added.

  • Religious genocide: Idris charges advertisers to correct narratives

Religious genocide: Idris charges advertisers to correct narratives

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has charged advertisers to join in correcting the narratives about religious genocides in Nigeria.

Idris spoke at the 5th Edition of the National Advertising Conference of Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, in Abuja.

The conference has as a theme — “Marketing Communication: Transforming Business and Creating Growth in Challenging Times”.

He said the challenge facing the nation is not only economically related but also communicational.

While admitting the fact that the country has security challenges, the minister, however, said that the present administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is fully committed to ending the scourge

He noted that the government has made huge investments to strengthen the security architecture.

He said, “Distinguished participants, our nation today faces challenges that are not only economic or security-related but also communicational. One of the gravest of these is the deliberate spread of misinformation — particularly the false and damaging narrative of Nigeria as a “violator of religious freedom.”

Let me state clearly and emphatically that this narrative is false. It is a distortion of our reality as a nation of diverse peoples and faiths, who have lived together peacefully for generations. Yes, Nigeria has faced security challenges, especially from terrorists and violent extremists, but these are not targeted at any religion or ethnic group. All Nigerians — Christians, Muslims, and people of other faiths — have suffered from the menace of terrorism and banditry.

“The present administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is fully committed to ending this scourge. We have invested deeply in strengthening our security architecture, rejigging the command and control structure, and injecting new ideas and fresh perspectives into the war against terror.

He also added, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in these challenging times, communication remains our strongest instrument — for business, for governance, and for nation-building. Let us therefore use it wisely, creatively, and responsibly. “

He therefore charged the advertiser as marketing communication professionals to get involved in the national perception and image.

“You are not only storytellers for brands and businesses — you are also custodians of national perception and image.

“When false narratives about Nigeria are spread — especially internationally — it is your creativity, strategy, and storytelling that can counterbalance them with truth, context, and compelling narratives of hope and progress.

“We need a communication renaissance — one that emphasizes facts over fear, unity over division, and truth over propaganda. We must project Nigeria as it truly is: a diverse, dynamic, and resilient nation of hardworking people who coexist peacefully, aspire collectively, and strive daily to build a better society. Through integrated campaigns, digital storytelling, strategic partnerships, and value-based branding, our marketers can reshape how Nigeria is perceived globally — as a land of opportunity, innovation, and creativity, not of conflict or crisis,” the minister said.

He also assured members of ARCON of the ministry’s support and partnership to ensure that the advertising and communication ecosystem thrives in a regulated but enabling environment.

He also added, “We are retooling our public information machinery to align with the realities of the digital age — where truth must travel faster than falsehood, and where the Nigerian story must be told by Nigerians themselves.

“The National Values Charter Framework, being implemented by the Ministry, is aimed at restoring the values of truth, integrity, patriotism, and national pride. These are values that must also underpin all marketing and communication practices in this country. “

In his conclusion, the Minister said, “We live in an era where businesses must innovate not only to survive but to thrive amid economic headwinds, technological disruption, and shifting consumer behaviour.

“Marketing communication is at the centre of this transformation. It remains the bridge between creativity and commerce, between ideas and impact, and between perception and reality. As a tool of persuasion and nation-building, communication has never been more powerful — or more needed — than it is today.”

In his remarks, ARCON DG Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo charged advertising professionals to drive business growth through innovation and strategic communication.

Fadolapo said, “In today’s world, market algorithms and marketing activities are shifting faster than ever. Consumer behaviour is becoming more complex to track, and digital disruption continues to redefine the rules of engagement,” Fadolapo said.

“This is why our ability to communicate effectively has become more vital than ever.”

The ARCON boss underscored the crucial role of marketing communications in stimulating business growth, brand resilience, and national development, particularly amid economic uncertainties.

He noted that the 2025 conference provides an opportunity for professionals to exchange insights, challenge assumptions, and develop solutions that strengthen the advertising ecosystem.

“This is a gathering of strategists, creators, innovators, and storytellers united by a shared goal: to reimagine how communication drives brand value, business sustainability, and national growth,” he added.

Fadolapo reaffirmed ARCON’s commitment to fostering professionalism, ethical standards, and innovation across the advertising industry.

  • NBA backs call for election disputes to be resolved before swearing-in of winners

NBA backs call for election disputes to be resolved before swearing-in of winners

    • …renews demand for independence of judiciary

The Akure branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Ondo State has joined national calls for all election-related litigation to be concluded before declared winners by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are sworn into office.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued on Sunday by the branch chairman, Barrister Onimisi Umar, following the 2025 Law Week held in Akure from November 9 to 14 in honour of Senator Bode Olajumoke, a former lawmaker representing Ondo North. The theme of the Law Week was “Nigeria: Quest for Utilitarian Judiciary and Role for Stakeholders.”

The NBA branch expressed support for the National Assembly’s ongoing proposal to amend the constitution to ensure that election disputes are fully resolved within a shortened time frame. The bill seeks to reduce the 180-day tribunal judgment period to 90 days, with an expedited process extending to the Supreme Court.

According to the communiqué, this reform would prevent candidates from assuming office while their elections are contested, thereby strengthening electoral integrity and public confidence. “It is suggested that election disputes should be resolved or determined before candidates are sworn into office,” the NBA stated.

The association also urged lawmakers to enact clearer, less ambiguous electoral laws to reduce loopholes frequently exploited by politicians.

At the same time, it warned against overburdening courts with election matters, which could delay regular judicial processes, advocating instead for a balance that places more responsibility for electoral integrity on the executive and legislature without compromising justice.

In addition, the communiqué criticised the judiciary’s persistent financial dependence on the executive, describing it as a major threat to judicial independence. It noted that the executive withholds between 60 and 70 per cent of judiciary budget allocations, causing operational shortfalls and exposing judges to political pressures.

The NBA called for full implementation of Section 121(3)(c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which guarantees financial autonomy for the judiciary, and announced the formation of an ad-hoc committee to engage both arms of government to ensure these constitutional provisions are fully enforced.

The association equally advocated the full implementation of the Correctional Service Act, 2019, particularly in the rehabilitation and reintegration of ex-inmates.

It asked the Ondo state government led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to establish a dedicated department for correctional reforms, improve data systems for monitoring rehabilitation outcomes, and establish well-funded half-way homes across the state.

The communiqué further suggested public-private partnerships for reintegration programmes and called for continuous training and retraining of correctional officers to align with current operational standards.

The association, however, encouraged stakeholders, especially in commercial sectors, to adopt Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms in contracts and agreements, stressing that not all disputes should proceed to litigation.

MACBAN knocks US over sanction threat on Nigeria

    • …disassociates self from killing, banditry, kidnapping, others

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) on Sunday criticised the newly introduced United States House Resolution 860, describing some of its assertions as incomplete and misleading regarding Nigeria’s pastoral communities.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja, MACBAN President Baba Ngelzarma urged the US Congress to adopt a balanced, factual, and informed stance that accurately reflects the realities on the ground.

He advised the US to revise the resolution, which seeks to impose sanctions on the association, including visa bans and asset freezes on individuals and groups allegedly involved in religious persecution.

Ngelzarma highlighted that pastoralists have often been among the most affected groups in Nigeria’s rural conflicts, a factor overlooked in the US decision.

H.Res. 860, introduced in the 119th US Congress by Rep. Christopher Smith with co-sponsor Rep. Bill Huizenga, proposes restrictive measures against MACBAN and other Fulani-led organisations.

The resolution also recommends listing “Fulani-Ethnic Militias” from states such as Benue and Plateau on the “Entities of Particular Concern” list under the International Religious Freedom Act.

Responding to the resolution, MACBAN denied any links to terrorist groups and condemned all acts of terrorism in Nigeria, emphasizing its commitment to peace and lawful pastoral activities.

Ngelzarma said, “MACBAN respectfully calls for revising H.R. 860 to remove all mention of MACBAN. We wish to state clearly and without ambiguity: MACBAN does not support, condone, harbour, finance, or protect any form of criminality, extremism, or violence.

“MACBAN is not and has never been an armed group or violent organisation. We condemn in the strongest possible terms banditry, cattle rustling, kidnapping, terrorism, or any crime whatsoever”.

He maintained that rural insecurity in Nigeria affects pastoralists and that thousands had been killed within eight years between 2015 and 2025 by cattle rustlers, bandits, armed vigilantes, militias, and extremist groups.

The president said, “Verified statistics indicate that between 2015 and 2025, over 18,640 pastoralists lost their lives, 1,298,802 were displaced, 87,543 houses were destroyed, and more than 1,114,519 cattle were rustled or killed, while over 656,555 small ruminants were lost or killed in 17 states.

“These losses represent not only human tragedy but also a massive blow to Nigeria’s livestock economy and national food systems.”

The association urged US and international stakeholders to consider the human and economic losses when assessing the pastoralist community.

He also disclosed targeted assassinations, noting that several top officials who cooperated with security agencies to expose criminal networks have been killed.

According to him, they include the chairmen of its Nasarawa, Katsina, Kogi, and Plateau State branches.

The president also said the National Vice President (I), Eng. Munnir Atiku Lamido has reportedly been missing without a trace since June 2023 while travelling from Katsina to Kaduna.

He said, “Targeted assassinations and threats to MACBAN Leadership. Several MACBAN officials committed to peace building have been assassinated, especially after cooperating with security agencies to expose criminals operating within rural communities.

“Among those killed include, Alh. Mohammed Hussaini Chairman Nasarawa State Chapter; Surajo Mairana Chairman Katsina State Chapter, Idris Abubakar Chairman Kawara State Chapter

“Alh. Shuaibu Suleiman Chairman Kogi State Chapter; Alh. Bello Gegu Vice Chairman Kogi State Chapter; Alh. Ibrahim Abubakar Jalido Chairman Kogi State; Muhammad Adamu Chairman Barikin Ladi LGA Plateau State; And Eng. Munnir Atiku Lamido, our National Vice President (I) has been missing without trace since June 2023 on his way from Katsina to Kaduna.

“Many of the zones and state executives have continued to receive threats for refusing to shield criminals. Their sacrifices exposed MACBAN’s unwavering stance against violence and criminal infiltration.”

MACBAN warned that conflating the entire pastoralist community with criminal actors reflects a misunderstanding that could fuel further stigmatization.

MACBAN called for engagement by the U.S. Congress with “credible local actors — including pastoralists, farmers, civil society, and security agencies — in conducting assessments.”

The group further urged evidence-based evaluation that accounts for the humanitarian toll on pastoral communities and recommended long-term investment in pastoralist infrastructure, including grazing reserves, veterinary services, water access, healthcare, and education.

He said, “MACBAN reaffirms its dedication to peace, justice, and national unity. We will continue to work with security agencies, development partners, and governments to address the root causes of conflict and ensure that herding and farming communities coexist in safety and mutual respect.”

MACBAN urged Nigerians and international stakeholders to stand with those who risk their lives daily, security operatives, community mediators, traditional rulers, and pastoral leaders working tirelessly to restore peace to the nation.

  • Oshiomhole backs Okpebholo on MOWAA, says committee will establish facts

Oshiomhole backs Okpebholo on MOWAA, says committee will establish facts

Former Edo State Governor and current Senator representing Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, has expressed confidence that Governor Monday Okpebholo has the political will to take the right steps regarding the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA).

Oshiomhole, who also chairs the committee set up by Governor Okpebholo to determine the legal and operational status of MOWAA, said the body will clarify the roles, rights, and stake of the Benin Royal Palace and Traditional Institution in the project.

In an interview in Benin City, Oshiomhole assured that the committee would work strictly within its terms of reference to uncover the facts and determine whether the project is MOWAA or EMOWAA. He expressed optimism that the committee would provide clear guidance on the next steps.

On constituency projects, Oshiomhole noted that he was entitled to N2 billion and ensured that projects worth that amount were distributed across Edo North’s six local government areas.

Read Also: MOWAA controversy: Okpebholo vows to prosecute parties involved in shady deals

He clarified that items such as grinding machines, tricycles, motorcycles, and refrigerators recently distributed to constituents were personally funded, while markets, schools, and boreholes he inaugurated were executed by the Federal Government.

According to him, “I believe that constituency projects should not be abolished but provision of constituency projects is not at the heart of my mandate. The tricycles, motorcycles, and grinding machines are not in the federal government budget. They were my personal hand-outs. It was from my pocket.

“I don’t have to be a Senator to do all those things. I have always shown that empathy before I became a Senator. When I was in the Textile industry, I used to give out wrappers and do other things for the people. Those things I gave out are not from the federal government budget. The Uchi market, for example, was from the federal government.

“It is not my money. Will the federal government ordinarily know about Uchi market? We rebuilt a new school and put in furniture. There is no way Abuja will remember Ojah. We have provision for schools in Owan West and Owan East. Those are tangible things. They are from federal government money. Those villagers would not have benefitted even though they voted for Mr. President.

“The whole thing is acting in good faith. The federal government is so far from the ordinary people but the Senator cannot be far from those that elected him. They are the proverbial okro. We cannot grow taller than them. After blowing all the grammar, I come back home to see things are ok for the people.”

“I am not against constituency projects but it has to do with the individual. I told the contractor to let the people know that it is a federal government funded project. The funding is not coming to Oshiomhole’s pocket. I am only entitled to N2bn. I have to try to ensure it spreads. The money is not given to the Senator but my influence in it is that I decide what I want to put in my constituency and that determines the agency that executes it. The federal government awards it and they pay directly to the contractor.”

  • When jealousy fuels attacks against Hon. Ibori-Suenu

When jealousy fuels attacks against Hon. Ibori-Suenu

    • By Gabriel Choba

The recent vitriolic attacks and campaign of calumny against Hon. (Mrs.) Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the member representing the Ethiope Federal Constituency reveals a deeper issue rooted in jealousy and fear of her escalating profile.

The unfounded claims of poor representation starkly contrast with the tremendous contributions Ibori-Suenu has made to her community and the nation at large.

The misguided chorus of dissent from certain quarters of Ethiope East leadership, claiming that Ibori-Suenu is underperforming, stems not from any factual basis but from envy toward a trailblazing Niger Delta Amazon who has chosen to serve her people with dedication and purpose. It is not only unfair but also unbecoming of leaders to condemn her without just cause, especially when we consider what she has accomplished.

Since entering the House of Representatives, Hon. Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to empowerment, grassroots engagement, and people-centric initiatives.

Her record speaks for itself: diverse programs have positively impacted the lives of ordinary citizens in ways that many of her critics, during their time in office, could only dream of achieving.

Read Also: Ondo PDP holds congress as Agboola Ajayi’s absence fuels defection speculations

Her legislative efforts, including the Nigerian Customs Training College, Oghara (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (HB.2316) and the Nigerian Paramedic College, Isiokolo (Establishment) Bill, 2025 (HB.2317), are on the verge of fruition, significantly enhancing the educational infrastructure in the constituency.

This growth can only be viewed as a beacon of hope as she addresses pressing issues such as kidnapping and the clashes between herders and farmers.

Moreover, the contrast becomes even more striking when we consider that many leaders now undermining Ibori-Suenu were once beneficiaries of Chief James Ibori’s mentorship at times when their own contributions were not proven. It is irony steeped in betrayal that those who rose to prominence through guidance would deny the same support to a capable and deserving daughter of the land.

Substantial achievements of Ibori-Suenu, including youth and women empowerment programs, the installation of streetlights, and the initiation of road construction projects in Igun, have reiterated her commitment to the development of Ethiope Federal Constituency, a region that hasn’t experienced this scale of progress since its establishment.

The Ethiope Federal Constituency Forum has reportedly held frequent meetings focused largely on discussing Ibori-Suenu’s impact, including conversations around a failed recall attempt against her. Their destabilizing efforts against the APC represent a misguided attempt to undermine her contributions.

Legislative responsibilities in today’s Green Chamber transcend mere visibility and photo opportunities; they hinge on delivering tangible benefits to constituents in the form of job creation, federal appointments, and project empowerment.

As Hon. Ibori-Suenu continues to make strides in her mission, it should serve as a wake-up call to the Ethiope Federal Constituency Forum that her (Ibori-Suenu) commitment remains unwavering despite their criticisms.

Her tenacity and determination to foster transformation in her constituency ought to stir reflection rather than resentment in those who fear her influence.

Indeed, it is evident that her critics are suffering from “sleepless nights,” and as she works to innovate and uplift her constituency, the narrative is one of progress and hope, not envy and sabotage.
