Osun 2026: Group backs Omisore’s gubernatorial ambition

A political group has thrown its weight behind the erstwhile national secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Iyiola Omisore, as he picked up the N50million nomination form of the party for the 2026 Osun State gubernatorial race.

The Nation recalls that Omisore picked N50 million APC Nomination and Expression of Interest forms ahead of the APC primary election fixed for December 13, 2025.

The group, Southern Movement for Asiwaju 2027, through its national coordinator, Alhaji Tunde Ayanleke, over the weekend during Omisore’s guber consultation in Ife North Local Government area, posited that the ex-Osun deputy governor is professionally and politically qualified to pilot the affairs of the state to achieve sustainable development if finally elected.

Meanwhile, Ayanleke stated that all APC aspirants are qualified, but Omisore’s vast experience in administration and politics, both in Osun and beyond, gives him an edge above them all.

He contended that Omisore is enriched academically and tested in the political arena, saying, “These qualities have positioned him as a true symbol and a complete leader for a new generation.”

The group leader tasked residents of Origbos in Ife North local government area to demonstrate their unalloyed support for Omisore’s governorship ambition and step up their mobilisation for him.

He added that “Osun State sits at a very crucial juncture in its quest for sustainable growth and development; therefore, there is a need for a choice like Omisore, who has visionary leadership, technical expertise, intellectual depth, and political wisdom to pilot the affairs of Osun.”

Correctional Service dismisses allegations of neglect, lack of care for female inmates

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) FCT Command has dismissed allegations of neglect and lack of care for female inmates under its Command, saying the assertions had no iota of truth.

The Command said it was not true that female inmates are being left without menstrual care at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Suleja.

“This claim is false, misleading, and does not reflect the reality on the ground”, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Sampson Duza, said in a statement.

Duza said, “In line with its mandate and international best practices, NCoS supplies sanitary pads and hygiene kits to all female inmates at no cost, with monthly distribution recorded in inmates’ welfare registers.

“Custodial Centres have a designated healthcare unit with qualified nurses and doctors that attend to the medical needs of female inmates, including menstrual-related issues, with free consultations, medications, and referrals to nearby hospitals when required.

“The Service also collaborates with development partners, civil society organizations, and faith-based groups that regularly donate sanitary products and conduct menstrual-hygiene awareness sessions.

“Recently, the service received a donation of sanitary pads from the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to promote menstrual hygiene, amongst others. This is a testament to the power of collaboration.”

He expressed the FCT Command’s commitment to the dignity and humane treatment of all inmates, saying that all these are in “accordance with the Nigerian Constitution, the Nelson Mandela Rules, and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.”

  • Nigeria urges ECOWAS, Sahel states to deepen collaboration on livestock development

Nigeria urges ECOWAS, Sahel states to deepen collaboration on livestock development

Nigeria has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Sahel countries to take deliberate steps in advancing livestock development programmes to boost productivity across the region.

The call came as ECOWAS opened discussions on strategies to improve agricultural productivity and strengthen the resilience of agro-pastoral systems in West Africa and the Sahel.

The regional body held a two-day Policy Dialogue Workshop in Abuja to evaluate the results of the PRISMA Project and align them with agricultural priorities for the sub-region.

Speaking at the opening session, Mr. Peter Alike, Director, Technical Office of the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, said the livestock sector remains underdeveloped in West Africa and the Sahel, requiring intentional action and regional cooperation to transform it.

He stressed that, “Deliberate action is needed because the government is aware that livestock production in this country—and indeed across West Africa and the Sahel—is still at a very rudimentary stage and far below the required level.”

“We cannot do it alone, and you cannot do it alone. If we put our hands together, then we will be able to really bring our competitiveness out to increase productivity.

“But this is not the kind of thing that you want to do by yourself. The first thing to be done is collaboration. This is the time that we need each other the most.”

On Nigeria’s deliberate plan to improve the contribution from the sector, Alike said that the sector’s current contribution to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is in the region of $32 billion.

He further disclosed that Nigeria’s strategic plan for the livestock sector, which runs from 2025 to 2030, aims to increase its GDP contribution from the current $32 billion to between $74 billion and $94 billion.

He said, “We have a strategic plan which is going to run from 2025 to 2030. And we have a basket of livestock contribution in GDP, which is currently at about $32 billion.

“And our mission is, in the next 10 years, we want to take, there is a baseline, a base anticipation of $4 billion, and then, of course, a high expectation of about $9-$4 billion. We believe that if you actually look at the entire value chain of livestock in Nigeria here today, we are far in excess of that. So we are even trying to recapture our actual contribution.

“So it’s for us, about where you are and where you want to be by this time. And if we do that, then we will be able to feed ourselves well. If we can feed ourselves well, we will be able to extend into the West African region.”

He explained that Nigeria plans to develop the livestock industry for national food security, job creation, and rural income generation.

Mr. Alike said the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Livestock Development by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflects the government’s deliberate action towards strengthening the livestock sub-sector and driving national development.

Mr. Alike also underscored the importance of collaboration between Nigeria, ECOWAS, and other regional actors in achieving shared agricultural and food security goals.

In his remarks, the Acting Executive Director of the Regional Agency for Agriculture and Food (ARAA), Mr. Konlani Kanfitin, reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to advancing livestock development and research collaboration in the region.

He expressed appreciation to the European Union (EU) and the Spanish Cooperation Agency (AECID) for co-financing the PRISMA Project (Research and Innovation for Productive, Resilient, and Healthy Agro-Pastoral Systems in West Africa), which promotes climate-adapted, research-based innovations in the livestock sector.

According to him, the PRISMA Project aligns with ECOWAS’ regional agricultural policy (ECOWAP), which seeks to transform agricultural and food systems across the region.

Mr. Kanfitin emphasised the importance of policy dialogue as a lever for coherence, strategic orientation, participatory governance, and regional integration.

He said, “The livestock sector occupies a central place in the economies of our member states. It contributes to food security, job creation, and the income of millions of rural households.

“This policy dialogue workshop constitutes a key moment for reflection and collective action; it is intended as a space for discussions and decision-making to improve the policy environment for research and innovation to increase the productivity and resilience of agro-pastoral systems in West Africa and the Sahel,” he noted.

In his remarks, Agricultural Engineer and PRISMA Researcher, Dr. Fernando Escribano, highlighted the project’s focus on tackling aflatoxins in livestock feed.

He described aflatoxins as metabolic byproducts of fungi and bacteria that can grow in the field and during storage when high moisture and temperature conditions allow, stressing the need for standard methods to control their presence in livestock feed.

“This is the scenario that we had when we started this project. We decided to focus because aflatoxins don’t have borders. Environmental impact doesn’t have borders. So, we decided to go with a harmonization exercise. We need to harmonize and define what equality is,” Dr. Escribano explained.

“We need to avoid the presence of aflatoxins in our feeds. We need to know how to sample to detect aflatoxins. We need to know how to measure aflatoxins in a relatively simple way, but in a way that we all agree can be done,” he added.

ECOWAS member states held a two-day Policy Dialogue Workshop for the Valuation of PRISMA Project Results in the Regional Agricultural Priorities of West Africa and the Sahel, in Abuja.

PRISMA (West Africa)-A research and innovation project that focused on regional agricultural priorities, particularly livestock development, in the region.

The PRISMA policy dialogue workshop was organized under the framework of ECOWAS’s regional agricultural policy (ECOWAP)

The event was co-financed and technically supported by the European Union (EU), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), Luxembourg Cooperation, Belgian Cooperation, and Spanish Cooperation.

The project aims to produce several results of research and innovation that take into account regional priorities in terms of productivity and competitiveness of value chains, food security, education, youth employment, climate change, and regency.

Akpabio, Yilwatda welcome mass defections to APC in Plateau

Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, on Saturday received a wave of defectors from various political parties into the APC in Plateau State at a colourful ceremony that drew a massive crowd of supporters.

The event, held at the Jos Polo Field, brought together APC leaders and supporters to welcome new members from five political parties — the PDP, Labour Party, PRP, ADC, and NNPP.

Prominent among the defectors were Senator Istifanus Gyang, who represented Plateau North in the Ninth Assembly; Latep Dabang, former Director-General of the PDP’s 2023 campaign; Dr. Patrick Dakum, Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate; and Alfred Dabwam, former NNPP governorship candidate.

Also joining the APC were lawmakers Hon. Fom Dalyop (Riyom/Barkin Ladi Federal Constituency), Hon. Ajang Alfred Ilya (Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency), and Hon. Daniel Asama Ago (Bassa/Jos North Federal Constituency), among others.

Representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the rally, Senator Akpabio said the arrival of Prof. Nentawe as APC National Chairman had ushered in renewed strength for the party in Plateau, evident in the high-profile defections recorded in recent months.

A statement by the Senate President’s Special Assistant on Media/Communication, Anietie Ekong, quoted Akpabio as saying, “My ears have heard and my eyes have seen that from today, the entire Plateau is APC. Come 2027, Plateau shall deliver the APC.”

“Today we have received political caterpillars, including several governorship candidates in the last election.

“We have also received the Director General of PDP campaigns in the last election, several serving and former members of the National Assembly, and their supporters.

“Let me appreciate President Tinubu for finding a man of valour, a man of integrity, and a man of dignity, Prof Nentawe, to become the National Chairman.

“You can see that he has delivered Plateau State to APC before the elections. When you are escorted by a lion like President Tinubu, you have nothing to fear,” he said.

Akpabio assured the people that their concerns regarding their security were being addressed by President Tinubu.

He praised the President for his unflinching commitment to peace in Plateau State, noting that the killings and displacements that ravaged communities for years must end.

“Too many lives have been lost. Too many homes destroyed. Plateau deserves peace, and anyone who wants to govern this state must be committed to peace,” he said.

“I cry whenever anybody is killed in the Plateau. The State is looking for peace, and President Tinubu will deliver peace to Plateau State.”

The APC National Chairman, Prof.  Yilwatda, said the day marked the final consolidation of APC dominance.

“Today on the Plateau, there is only one political party. If you are not in APC, you are not in politics.

“With this structure, with this firepower, Plateau will deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

“All three Senate seats will be APC. All federal and state positions will be APC. The people have spoken, APC or nothing,” he said.

The defectors were presented with the party flags and symbols of the broom by the APC National Chairman, and assured them of equal rights and privileges as other members of the party.

The reception rally was also attended by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, the Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule, his Benue State counterpart, Hyacinth Alia, and the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Salifu Joel, among others.

    • …says he is committed to Tinubu’s re-election

A prominent cleric, Dr. Elijah Jack, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, taking more than 3,000 of his supporters with him.

The defection ceremony, held over the weekend at Oniong East Ward 1 in Onna Local Government Area, drew the attendance of several past and serving political office holders.

Jack, who is the General Overseer of His Divine Redeemed World Ministries, said he joined the APC to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to contribute to the president’s re-election efforts in 2027.

He explained that his move was motivated by patriotism and a desire to promote unity, peace, and inclusive governance.

“My decision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not driven by personal gain or political rivalry, but by a sincere desire to contribute more meaningfully to national unity, peace building, and inclusive governance,” he said.

“At this moment in our country, what Nigerians need most is not division but healing, cooperation, and collective action. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has clearly emphasized the Renewed Hope Agenda, which calls for unity, stability, and the integration of all citizens regardless of party lines, into the national development process.

“Likewise, in Akwa Ibom State, Governor Umo Eno has consistently preached peace, unity, and development through the ARISE agenda.

“As a church founder and an ambassador of peace, these are values I have practiced long before politics. In my ministry and community work, I have always preached forgiveness, tolerance, and reconciliation.

“I have mediated disputes, united families, supported youths across party divides, and encouraged people to see one another first as brothers and sisters, and not opponents.

“So, my defection is not meant to create tension but to build bridges. I am joining the APC to bring spiritual and moral leadership to the space, and encourage more citizens to participate peacefully in governance”.

He added that he is going to begin a political and spiritual movement to win supporters for Tinubu, the Senate president, Goddess Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno

“Going forward, I will continue to support programmes that unite youths, women, and other marginalized groups irrespective of political differences, and use my platform as a clergyman to preach political tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

“I am going to encourage all my followers to register in their various wards, as APC Members and also ensure they all apply and get their voters card ready for the 2027 election to vote President Tinibu and Governor Umo Eno, leaders and followers to put Nigeria first before political affiliations”, he said.

Ultimately, my goal is to serve as a symbol of unity by showing that politics does not have to divide us, and that together we can build a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous Akwa Ibom and Nigeria.”

Receiving the defectors, Onna APC leader, Patrick Ifon, hailed the defection as a “landmark moment,” describing the new entrants as men and women of capacity whose presence guarantees electoral victory in the next cycle.

“This is not just a defection; it is a political statement. With the thousands of Apostles Elijah has brought, APC in Onna is positioned to sweep all positions in the coming elections,” he declared

Commissioner for Finance, Emem Bob, described Apostle Jack as “a brother and friend whose capacity is beyond doubt”, adding that his move reflects Governor Umo Eno’s deep-rooted goodwill in Onna.

Former House of Representatives member Dr. Owoidighe Ekpoattai, APC Chapter Chairman Mr. Nkanang Nkanang, Hon. Bassey Willie, Hon. Oton Charlie, Barr. Akan Idem, Hon. Emmanuel Ekpeyo, Elder Nelson Ntia, Hon. Samuel Mboso, and Comrade Tony Ekpo all praised the new movement, calling it a massive boost to APC’s grassroots strength.

Oyo APC condemns PDP Ibadan convention, calls it a ‘carnival of shame’

The Oyo State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised the National Convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, describing the event as a charade and a “carnival of shame, lawlessness, and impunity.”

It was reported that despite multiple court rulings ordering the suspension of the convention, the faction led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde proceeded with the event, hosting delegates from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory to elect new national officers for the party.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC accused Governor Makinde of subjecting Ibadan residents to needless hardship by allegedly compelling commercial drivers to withdraw their services and assemble at the venue to inflate attendance and create a false impression of a successful convention.

“PDP has been synonymous with impunity, and this played out again when a group within the party called the bluff of the judiciary to stage an illegal procession in Ibadan, which they tagged a national convention,” Sadare said.

He further alleged that Governor Makinde was “desperate for national leadership” despite failing “woefully on the home front,” pointing to ongoing grievances from residents affected by property demolitions for the Ibadan Circular Road project.

Sadare also claimed that a significant portion of the September allocations of the 33 local government councils was diverted to fund what he described as a “jamboree,” noting that many PDP governors reportedly declined to contribute financially.

He warned that every public fund spent on the “failed PDP project” would be accounted for, asserting that the “kangaroo convention” signalled the beginning of the PDP’s collapse.

However, he added that it was not too late for the party’s warring factions to reconcile if they hoped to remain relevant in future elections.

“It is clear they have already lost 2027; their only chance is to plan ahead for possible relevance in 2031,” he said.

Residents and passersby were thrown into panic on Saturday after a loud explosion occurred near a commercial bank in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The sound reportedly sent people scampering for safety as thick smoke briefly rose from the scene, forcing traders to flee and nearby shop owners to hastily shut their doors.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, said investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a loud firecracker purchased from a nearby supermarket.

He also called on residents to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of a confidential DSS letter warning of “imminent attacks” by ISWAP terrorists in Ondo and Kogi States.

The letter, addressed to the Commander of the 32 Artillery Brigade, Akure, listed Eriti-Akoko, Oyin-Akoko and Owo town among the targeted communities. It stated that intelligence confirmed plans to carry out coordinated attacks “anytime soon.”

Last week, panic also spread in the Akungba-Akoko community following rumours that Boko Haram members had invaded the area.

FUTA: Tinubu tasks tertiary institutions on curriculum reform

President Bola Tinubu has called on the authorities of tertiary institutions across the country to prioritise curriculum reform to produce graduates equipped with practical, market-ready skills for today’s rapidly evolving labour landscape.

Speaking on Saturday at the 38th convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), in Ondo State, the President said Nigerian higher institutions must move beyond outdated teaching models and embrace innovative, skills-driven learning that supports both employability and entrepreneurship.

Tinubu, represented by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abdullahi Yusuf Ribadu, noted that curriculum redesign remains crucial to national development.

He stressed that his administration was committed to strengthening the higher education system through improved policies, investment in technology, research funding, and stronger university-industry collaborations.

The President added that his government would continue to provide an enabling environment for investments and businesses to thrive, especially in the areas of technology, renewable energy, health sciences, and vocational trades.

“While today’s ceremony brings joy, it is overwhelming to consider the number of graduates joining the labour market. It is therefore important to focus on the relevance of our curricula to employability and job creation.

“Government alone cannot directly provide jobs for the teeming graduates from our institutions, but we will continue to create an environment where businesses can grow. This administration recognises the critical role of science, technology, and innovation in our national development,” he said.

Tinubu also highlighted ongoing efforts under the digital economy agenda, renewable energy initiatives, and infrastructure development, revealing that they present new opportunities for graduates.

On agriculture, he reiterated that Nigeria’s abundant natural resources offer significant prospects for wealth creation, urging graduates to explore opportunities in the sector.

The President called for a review of the long-standing practice of relying solely on government for university funding, stressing the need for more sustainable models.

He also encouraged parents, guardians, and alumni to complement government efforts, as practised globally, emphasising the need to strengthen the link between tertiary institutions and industry so that research outputs can be more impactful and commercially relevant.
