NNPP crisis: Kano governor’s defection was inevitable — Former party leaders

Three former National Officers of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have described the defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, as the most difficult yet strategically necessary decision of his political career.

In a joint statement issued on Sunday, former National Chairman, Prof. Ahmed Rufai Alkali; former National Organising Secretary, Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi; and former National Legal Adviser, Prof. Ben Angwe said the governor’s exit from the party was long anticipated.

According to them, it was never a question of whether Yusuf would leave the NNPP, but rather the exact time.

They argued that the governor acted as a pragmatic politician who refused to be constrained by what they described as a deteriorating internal structure, merely to satisfy the sentimental expectations of political mentors and opportunists.

In the statement titled “We Have Been Vindicated,” the trio—who exited the party before the current crisis—said the unfolding turmoil within the NNPP was a development they had foreseen long ago.

The statement read, “In politics, we have learnt loyalty is often praised, but foresight is rarely celebrated until it is proven right. Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf’s decision to exit the NNPP and align with the APC has triggered predictable outrage, undiluted anger and a crisis of denial among those who mistook noise for wisdom.

“Yet, stripped all emotions and pretentions, the move was neither sudden nor surprising. It was not only inevitable, but it was inevitably inevitable. As always in life, some decisions test character, others test courage, but Governor Kabir Yusuf’s move tested both.

“For those of us who were privileged to have been witnesses to the long uncertain and often chaotic situations leading to the build-up to the 2023 elections, the Implosion of the Kano faction of the NNPP was never a matter of if, but when.

“To all discerning minds and close watchers of the dynamics of politics, the warning signs were everywhere. A party built more on sentiments than realities, in personalities rather than institutions, and on personal loyalty instead of legitimate organisational discipline will hardly escape from internal crisis and conflicts. Indeed, such fragile artificial and ad-hoc arrangements do not endure. Certainly, they do not last long. They expire and they explode, often with a bang.

“Governor Kabir Yusuf chose not to wait for the expiry date because the expired date was already very near. The unfolding crisis today is therefore not just a fallout, it is a confirmation. Not surprisingly, critics have framed the decision as betrayal. That is the lazy language of some selfish politicians. In truth, what we are witnessing is something unique and rare. A politician refusing to be trapped by a collapsing internal disorder, simply to satisfy the romantic expectations of mentors and political merchants.

“While others were busy managing and massaging egos and firefighting internal rebellions, the governor was reading the balance sheet of political reality. Unfortunately, often tim s, reality is unforgiving.

“Today, the very party Abba Yusuf left is engulfed in open conflict -court room litigations, factional declarations and advertised confusion over party legitimacy. This is not an external conspiracy, it is the natural consequence of unresolved contradictions demanding serious attentions, but we’re ignored for too long. The crisis did not begin with the governor’s exit. To the contrary, it was the political wind that blew open it’s pretentious cover.

“In the circumstance, Governor Abba’s decision was not an act of abandonment, but if self preservation and more importantly, of the obligation for him to fulfil his mandate. Kano state cannot afford cannot afford a distracted leader held hostage to endless validation and internal quarrels.

“The good people of Kano state deserve and demand a leadership, a good leadership for that matter which requires oxygen, not suffocation by insatiable personal selfish interests.

“Political realignments are common in Nigeria. What distinguishes Abba’s move to others is timing. The Governor did not move in panic, not in fear, not in desperation. Rather, he moved while he still had leverage, clarity of mind and the much needed momentum to drive the process through to it’s logical conclusion. That is not weakness. That is strategy.

“From all that has been filtering from Kano state, history is already leaning in his favour. Already, as events unfold, the narrative is shifting from outrage to reluctant acknowledgement, to the redefinition of loyalty in his side.

“One question many followers of Kano politics are asking quietly is kit why did Abba leave now, but how long could he have realistically stayed and survived in the furnace? Students of realpolitik will tell you that vindication of real politics rarely arrives with applause. It arrives with facts, irrefutable facts and that facts are always stubborn, to the utter dismay of rejectionists.

“Governor Kabir Yusuf made what was arguably the most difficult decision of his political life and very likely, the most consequential decision too. Governor Kabir Yusuf ‘s political realignment was difficult, but his choice of APC was difficult, but his choice of APC was necessary and logical.

“What is unfolding now confirms what some of us already knew would happen, just a question of time and the time has come. This was never about betrayal, it was about foresight and foresight is one of the rare hallmark of good leadership.

“But if some people’s out of sentiments and selfish interests still feel it’s is a betrayal, then they should be reminded that a good student must learn from his teacher and a good mentee must learn from his mentor or as they say in Latin, Quorn seminas id metes.”

  • Presidential ambition: Keyamo analyses Kwankwaso’s political fate

Presidential ambition: Keyamo analyses Kwankwaso’s political fate

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo has analysed the political fate and presidential ambition of Rabi’u Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 elections.

Kwankwaso is the national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement in Kano State.

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf and his allies recently dumped the party.

Following the recent political development in the State, Keyamo in a post on Sunday evening on his official X handle @fkeyamo, stated that it appears Kwankwaso has boxed himself into one of the tightest corners in his political career following his indecision to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Minister said with the exodus of key figures from NNPP to APC in Kano, the APC’s structure in Kano is now in better stead to challenge the NNPP in 2027.

Keyamo added that the APC is not so desperate for a Kwankwaso in Kano, but would be glad to welcome him into the Party because he remains an asset.

Keyamo, however, highlighted five facts in his post to state back his reasons for stating that Kwankwaso is in a very difficult political crossroads.

The post by Keyamo read: “I have always admired Engr. Mohammed Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso from a distance, but he appears to have boxed himself into one of the tightest corners in his political career simply because of his refusal/indecision to take the Olive Branch that was offered him by the APC much earlier. Let’s break down his predicament.

“Fact 1 – Kwankwaso wants to be President, but none of the major political parties will pick him as a candidate in 2027. APC & PDP are going South & ADC’s ticket is Atiku’s to lose. Atiku is the owner of ADC (argue with your keypad, if you like). Only a major political Party can win a Presidential election in Nigeria. NNPP is still a one-State Party and with the recent wave of defections from NNPP (including the Governor himself), it is doubtful if it can maintain its grip on Kano in 2027. A leader is only as strong as his devoted lieutenants.

Read Also: Obasanjo holds closed-door meeting with Babangida in Minna

“Fact 2: Kwankwaso will not support a northern candidate because that ends his own Presidential ambition since he MAY have to wait for another 16 years after 2027 to get a shot at the Presidency – 8 likely years for the Northern Candidate and another 8 likely years when it rotates to the South again. That’s a gamble he will not take. He will be 86 years old by then. So, this entirely rules out an ATIKU-Kwankwaso cooperation in 2027

“Fact 3 – Based on the above calculations, the only pathway for Kwankwaso is in 2031, but the alliance he builds in 2027 will be crucial to his ambitions in 2031. If his grip on Kano slips in 2027, it will water down his clout and influence in 2031 to be handed a Presidential ticket by any of the major Political parties. This is the time he can cash in on his presumed dominance of Kano politics and take a chance”.

The post continues: “Fact 4: Kwankwaso’s only chance of a realistic alliance now with a major political party is actually narrowed down to the PDP, the APC or the Labour Party (only if Peter Obi returns there and picks the 2027 Presidential ticket and he agrees to run as VP candidate to Obi). But all three options present their own challenges.

“With the PDP now gasping for breath, it may be easier for Kwankwaso to return to PDP on some terms (like taking over the entire structure in Kano and some North West States and returning Kano to PDP). And that will signal the death of NNPP. But with the zoning of the Presidential ticket to the South, that would mean a suspension of his 2027 Presidential ambition till 2031.

“If Kwankwaso decides to pitch tent with the APC, he is in no position to dictate so much terms to the Party. With the exodus of key figures from NNPP to APC in Kano, the APC’s structure in Kano is now in better stead to challenge the NNPP in 2027. The APC is therefore not so desperate for a Kwankwaso in Kano, but would be glad to welcome him into the Party. He still remains an asset. But one thing is sure: the APC cannot throw its entire structure in Kano under the bus for a Kwankwaso, especially with the Governor parting ways with him. However, the attraction of the APC for him is that the APC still has the national spread and structures to retain power in 2031. So, an APC option for Kwankwaso will also mean a suspension of his Presidential ambition till 2031.

“The 2027 Labour Party option for Kwankwaso is narrower because he simply cannot and will not run as Vice-Presidential candidate to Peter Obi. Take that to the bank. His own people will not even support him to give a likely fresh 8 years to the South (forget all the noise of ‘I will serve just one term).

“Fact 5: From the scenarios above, Kwankwaso is in a very difficult political crossroads . The decision he makes now may retire him permanently from politics or revive his Presidential ambition. But one fact is clear: just like late Buhari and the CPC, without a handshake with another major Party, he will remain a local champion with his NNPP, but that too may soon vanish with the present predicament of the Party in Kano”.

Barau visits troops in Kano North, commends anti-banditry efforts

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, on Sunday visited military camps in Gwarzo, Shanono, and Tsanyawa Local Government Areas of Kano North Senatorial District, where troops have been deployed to curb bandits’ incursions from neighboring states.

The deployments, comprising soldiers, police, and civil defence operatives, were ordered by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, following repeated bandit attacks in the three local government areas.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Jibrin arrived in Kano at 7 a.m. and proceeded directly to Lakwaya ward in Gwarzo, where he engaged with security personnel at their camp.

Accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel I. Ekoh, Garrison Commander of the 3 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Kano, and other senior security officials, the senator inspected a parade of troops led by the Joint Task Force Commander in Gwarzo, Lt. Abdullahi Sadiq.

Senator Jibrin, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, commended the troops for their dedication and tireless efforts to protect the communities from banditry.

“Thank you very much for your efforts to safeguard the lives and property of our people. We thank Mr President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for swiftly acting on our request. He took it upon himself to inform the Chief of Defence Staff, down to the Chief of Army Staff, the IGP and all the security agencies, including the Director-General of DSS, which culminated in your posting to this area.

“Since you arrived in this area, you have been doing all you can to restore peace and tranquillity to our people. I’m here to thank you for putting your lives on the line to ensure our people live in peace and tranquillity. On behalf of the people of this area, the people of Kano North Senatorial District, and Kano State at large, we thank you for your efforts to safeguard the lives of our people,” he said.

Urging the troops to sustain the tempo, he said, “Please go after these people who don’t want peace in our land, the bandits who are terrorising our people. Chase them wherever they are and flush them out of this area, and indeed the entire area. We are hopeful you will be able to do so.”

A former member of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Farouk Lawan, who hails from the area, said the visit was to encourage and motivate the gallant officers fighting banditry, thanking Senator Barau for his consistent and decisive role in addressing security challenges in the area.

Responding, Senator Barau said he was in the community to meet with community leaders and residents following the recent bandits’ incursions in the area.

“May Allah protect us and prevent any future occurrence of such incidents. I’m also here to engage directly with our gallant security personnel; to see them, listen to them, and discuss the situation on the ground,” he said.

In response to the community’s request, he announced that a dam would be constructed as soon as possible.

  • Uba Sani to construct largest bus terminal in Nigeria

Uba Sani to construct largest bus terminal in Nigeria

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has said that his administration will construct what promises to be the largest inter-state bus terminal in Nigeria, in terms of size and infrastructure.

Performing the ground breaking on Sunday, the Governor said that the terminal will be located on 20 hectares of land along the Eastern Bypass in Chikun Local Government Area.

The Governor also disclosed that the Ultra-Modern Inter-State Bus Terminal will operate as a dual terminal with the capacity to accommodate over 5,000 vehicles, supported by intelligent traffic management systems and advanced surveillance architecture.

‘’The facility will feature escalators and elevators, ensuring accessibility for all users, including the elderly and persons with disabilities,’’ Governor Uba Sani maintained.

He said that the terminal will host refueling stations for petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas (CNG), positioning Kaduna State at the forefront of sustainable transport innovation.

‘’A three-star hotel within the complex will cater to travellers, drivers, and visitors, offering comfort, rest, and convenience. This is not merely infrastructure of concrete and steel; it is a fully integrated mobility ecosystem; safe, efficient, transparent, and future-ready,’’ he promised.

Governor Uba Sani also pointed out that the project is also a major economic catalyst.

‘’By anchoring it along the revitalised Eastern Bypass corridor, we are decongesting the city centre, improving connectivity between intra-city and inter-state travel, and enhancing security surveillance.

‘’Thousands of direct and indirect jobs will be created: drivers, technicians, artisans, traders, service providers, and young entrepreneurs will all find opportunity within the economic ecosystem this terminal will generate,’’ he added.

The Governor argued that investing in modern mobility infrastructure also addresses structural vulnerabilities that often fuel crime and instability, adding that ‘’in doing so, we are reinforcing peace and security not only in Kaduna State, but across the wider North-West region.’’

According to him, Sunday’s groundbreaking is part of a broader, deliberate, and carefully sequenced transformation of Kaduna State’s transport ecosystem.

He recalled that Kaduna State Government has deployed 100 free CNG buses since the middle of last year, which have conveyed over 1.4 million passengers, saving commuters almost ₦1.5 billion in transport costs.

The Governor said that ‘’this initiative has reduced household expenditure, lowered emissions, eased traffic congestion, and improved daily mobility for workers, students, and traders.’’

Governor Uba Sani noted that Kaduna State has historically occupied a strategic position as a link between regions, markets, and productive sectors in the country.

‘’However, for many years, this advantage was weakened by fragmented and inadequate transport arrangements that placed avoidable burdens on travellers, traders, and transport operators,’’ he lamented.

According to him, inter-state travel is being defined by congestion, disorder, and insecurity as ‘’families waited endlessly in unsafe conditions. Traders lost productive hours at overcrowded terminals. Young people began journeys burdened by uncertainty rather than confidence.’’

‘’Today, we draw a firm line beneath that history. With this project, we are replacing disorder with structure, vulnerability with safety, and inconvenience with dignity,’’ he said.

Governor Uba Sani said that the terminal is designed to consolidate scattered, unsafe, and unregulated motor parks into a single, professionally managed, technology-enabled facility.

‘’It will strengthen regulatory oversight, restore confidence in public transport, and guarantee the right of every citizen to safe and dignified mobility. Order will replace chaos; transparency will replace opacity; accountability will replace arbitrariness,’’ he said.

The Uba Sani administration has also completed 200 modern bus stops across Kaduna State, providing safe, organised, and dignified waiting spaces for passengers.

He disclosed that the Kakuri Modern Bus Terminal, which will serve as the Southern Transport Hub, ‘’has reached 90 percent completion, while the redevelopment of the Sobawa Motor Park currently stands at 50 percent completion, progressing steadily toward delivery.’’

The Governor promised that ‘’by March 2026, we will break ground for the Kaduna Light Rail Project, featuring a 30-kilometre Red Line from Rigachikun to Sabon Tasha and a 20-kilometre Yellow Line from Millennium City to Rigasa.

According to him, this transformative project will redefine urban mobility and reduce pressure on our road networks.

‘’We are also launching a 24-kilometre Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor from Kawo to Sabon Tasha, supported by 30 modern stations and 120 buses, designed to move large volumes of people efficiently, affordably, and reliably.

‘’ These initiatives are not isolated projects; they form an integrated, multimodal transport system designed to serve every segment of our society; urban and rural, young and old, rich and poor.

Governor Uba Sani recalled that the investment in transport sector has earned national recognition for Kaduna State under his leadership in the last two and half years.

‘’At the National Urban Mobility Conference held in Abuja on January 22, 2026, Kaduna State was ranked second in Nigeria for sustainable urban mobility, in recognition of our transport sector reforms.

‘’ We are also proud that Kaduna State is the first in Northern Nigeria and the second nationally after Lagos, to develop a comprehensive State Transport Policy, providing a clear legal and strategic framework for long-term planning.

The Governor said that ‘’when the history of this era is written, let it be recorded that Kaduna State chose planning over improvisation, inclusion over exclusion, and sustainability over short-term fixes.

‘’We are not merely building terminals, buses, and rail lines; we are building confidence, restoring trust, and laying foundations for enduring prosperity,’’ he pointed out.

  • Projects: No community is left behind in Kaduna—Uba Sani

Projects: No community is left behind in Kaduna—Uba Sani

Governor Uba Sani said that his administration is constructing 140 roads in all the 23 local governments in Kaduna State, totalling 1,335 kilometres across all the three senatorial districts.

He pointed out that all the roads were conceived and initiated by his government, promising that his administration will complete road projects  inherited from previous governments.

The Governor, who spoke on Saturday during the commissioning of asphalt road linking Durum to Kuruntumawa towns in Makarfi local government, reminded that all the road projects are of standard quality.

He recalled that he was at Kuruntumawa last September, when  he performed the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of the  road project which he commissioned on Saturday.

‘’For many years, this community endured the consequences of poor road infrastructure. The hardship was visible and persistent. Farmers struggled to move their produce to market, traders faced rising costs. Students navigated unsafe journeys to schools. Families encountered delays in accessing healthcare.

‘’These were not distant statistics, they were personal stories I heard directly from you—at townhall meetings, during consultations and in quiet moments of honest conversations, like the one I had with the Secretary to Kaduna State Government,’’ he said.

Read ALso: 2027: Southern Kaduna group passes confidence vote on Tinubu, Uba Sani

According to him, the Kuruntumawa-Durum road is more than just concrete and tar but a lifeline, a channel where ‘’the labour of our farmers will reach markets more efficiently. It is the path that will carry our children safely to school and enable patients to access medical care without unnecessary delay.’’

He reiterated  that he is fulfilling his campaign promise of  rural transformation and inclusive governance, where both rural and urban areas will have their fair share of projects.

The Governor said that  Makarfi local government is amongst the 12 local governments that had not benefited from even a single  kilometre road project  in the last 12 years.

He added that  the Makarfi General Hospital that had been abandoned, has been re-modelled and fitted with modern equipment, promising that in the next few weeks it will be commissioned.

Speaking at the event, the Secretary to Kaduna State Government, Dr AbdulKadir Mu’azu Meyere, recalled that the people of Kuruntumawa had requested for the construction of the road during the 2023 campaign.

According to Dr Meyere, he promised them that Senator Uba Sani will construct it if voted into office, adding that the Governor has fulfilled his pledge with the commissioning of the project.

The SSG said that previous administrations, in the last 30 years, had been promising to construct the road but had failed until the coming of Governor Uba Sani.

He said that this singular act has shown that the Governor is a man of his words, a compassionate leader and someone who has the welfare of rural dwellers at heart.

In his welcome address, the Chairman of Makarfi local government, Hon Garba Muhammad Sabon  Gari said that the people of Makarfi council will never forget Governor Uba Sani’s administration because of  developmental projects that have been  executed in the area.

He said that restoring electricity to the local government was the first project that the Governor executed, adding that the award for the Kuruntuwa to Durum road and the commissioning was done with three months.

  • 2027: Amosun backs Tinubu for second term, calls for respect of power rotation

2027: Amosun backs Tinubu for second term, calls for respect of power rotation

Former Ogun State Governor and Senator, Ibikunle Amosun, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing the importance of respecting Nigeria’s power rotation principle.

Speaking on Sunday at Ake Pavilion in Abeokuta during his 68th birthday celebrations, Amosun argued that after eight years of Northern leadership under the late President Muhammadu Buhari, it is the South’s turn to hold the presidency for another four years to complete an eight-year cycle.

The event drew a massive crowd of loyalists and political associates, filling the venue to capacity.

Notable APC leaders in attendance included former Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Lekan Adegbite; immediate past Nigeria High Commissioner to the UK, Sarafa Tunji Isola; former CBN Deputy Governor, Tunde Lemo; Senator Iyabo Anisulowo; and Senator Gbenga Obadara, among others.

Amosun stressed that adhering to the rotational arrangement is vital for the political health of the nation and reaffirmed his commitment to the APC, highlighting his role, alongside Aremo Olusegun Osoba, as a foundational member of the party in Ogun State.

He warned against undermining the party he helped build, commended Tinubu’s representation of the South and his Southwest roots, and reiterated that Nigerians must respect the constitutional principle of power rotation in the 2027 elections.

He said, “In the interest of Nigeria, we should observe the rotation. The south has been waiting for its turn, and with President Tinubu at the helm, we’re on the right path.

“We’re proud of our heritage, and we won’t let anyone destroy our progress,” Amosun declared, backing Tinubu’s re-election bid.

“In the interest of Nigeria, we should observe the rotation. Rotation in the sense that if the North takes the presidency this time, the South will have to take it the next time. The last president from the North was President Muhammadu Buhari. He did how many years? Eight years.

“Now it is our turn in the South, and we have in the South president Tinubu. Is there now someone representing all of us in Nigeria, primarily, but he’s from where? Southwest, so it’s representing all of us in the South. So it’s indeed it is a good idea for anybody who loves Nigeria to agree that whatever we are doing, we should respect that rotational arrangement.

“And that is why today, just like what I said when we were having our convention that time, that not only in the interest of maybe even Asiwaju now or even any of us but in the interest of all of us in Nigeria.

“So I want to inform all of you, I have read a lot of things but I want everybody to know if we say A is our A, if we say B it will be B. We told them that we are who we are,  and in any case in this Ogun state how can they talk about APC without talking about Amosun. With respect to all our leaders and our elders, I think probably the only person that will say in this Ogun state when we are forming APC, I will say he is in the forefront is Olusegun Osoba, when you take Osoba  who will you take next is me, and  that is why you do not destroy what you build.”

Earlier, Amosun addressed his loyalties across the state to remain committed to the APC structure, expressing optimism in Tinubu policy.

Also, prayer sessions were held in his residential house at Ibara GRA. He also visited to correctional facilities in Abeokuta,  Ilaro,  Sagamu and Oba where shared foods and other items to the inmates.

Ex-IGP Okiro endorses Tinubu for second term, praises president’s leadership courage

Former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, describing him as the most courageous president Nigeria has ever had.

Okiro, speaking to newsmen on Saturday evening in Ibadan, noted that Tinubu assumed office amid significant challenges and has been addressing them steadily.

The former IGP was in Ibadan both to publicly back Tinubu’s reelection and to inaugurate a new support group, Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu (GMT).

He highlighted that Tinubu’s policies across various sectors are beginning to yield positive results and expressed confidence that the country would be markedly improved by the end of his tenure.

Okiro also pointed to Tinubu’s achievements as Lagos State governor as evidence of his capabilities and the potential legacies he could leave after eight years in office.

He said, “The legacies he left in Lagos are still there. As President, he has been governing with courage. No president in Nigeria has ever been bold to govern this way.

“He took critical decisions from subsidy removal to various others. It was harsh on Nigerians at first, but all is gradually taking shape and yielding positive results now.

“Nigerians should remain very patient and support him for a second term. I am confident that he would have taken Nigeria to where it ought to be at the end of his second term.”

On insecurity, Okiro expressed optimism that it would soon be over, commending the president for efforts made so far in tackling the challenges.

Okiro, who led the nation’s police force from 2007 to 2009, spoke on the giant strides recorded in the area of security in Lagos State under Tinubu’s watch.

He noted that he met Tinubu as governor of Lagos State and could boldly say that Tinubu’s security architecture accounted for the peaceful atmosphere enjoyed in Lagos today.

“Insecurity is an ill-wind that does no good to anybody irrespective of age, gender or status. We must commend the president for efforts so far.

“I am optimistic that with the ongoing efforts, insecurity would soon be reduced to the barest minimum if not totally wiped off,” he said.

Okiro, who is also the Maradin Hausawa of Ibadanland, also paid condolence visit to the family of the late Sarkin Sasa in Ibadan.

On his entourage were Northern Youth and Elder’s Awareness Forum National Coordinator, Alhaji Mahmud Sani Yerima; North-West Zone Coordinator, Umar Sani Nalema, Alhaji Isa Bawa Isa, Alhaji Muhammad Shehu and Alhaji Abdullahi Ahmad.

EPL: United shock Arsenal in five-goal thriller

Manchester United threw the Premier League title race wide open with a pulsating 3–2 win over leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, handing the Gunners their first home league defeat of the season in a night of high drama.

Arsenal had been presented with the opportunity to re-establish a seven-point cushion at the summit following victories for Manchester City and Aston Villa earlier in the weekend. Instead, their advantage was trimmed as an energised United side delivered a ruthless second-half performance to loosen the hosts’ grip on top spot.

The Gunners started with authority and were rewarded in the 29th minute when Lisandro Martínez diverted the ball into his own net under pressure, giving Arsenal a deserved breakthrough. United, however, were gifted a lifeline eight minutes later when Martin Zubimendi’s loose pass was pounced upon by Bryan Mbeumo, who kept his composure to finish clinically and restore parity.

Momentum swung firmly in United’s favour after the interval, and they surged ahead five minutes into the second half. Patrick Dorgu unleashed a thunderous effort that struck the underside of the crossbar before finding the net, stunning the home support. Arsenal responded with sustained pressure and eventually drew level late on, substitute Mikel Merino reacting quickest to poke home from close range in the 84th minute.

Just as the contest appeared to be heading for a draw, United delivered the decisive blow. Three minutes after the equaliser, Matheus Cunha curled a magnificent strike from outside the area to silence the Emirates and secure a statement victory for the visitors.

The loss leaves Arsenal winless in their last three league outings, though they remain top on 50 points from 23 matches, with Manchester City and Aston Villa closing the gap on 46 points. United’s triumph lifts them to fourth on 38 points, intensifying an already crowded and unpredictable title race.

Speaking at a meeting with the President at the State House, Abuja, Sawan said Shell, alongside its partners, is ready to invest an additional $20 billion in Nigeria, citing the improved investment environment under the Tinubu administration as a decisive factor.

According to him, Nigeria has emerged as one of the countries currently attracting significant capital from global oil and gas companies, noting that stability has become a premium consideration for long-term corporate investments.

According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, Sawan said “we have really been in a space where we are very keen to invest in Nigeria. But I would say this has not always been the case.

“Your leadership and your vision have created an investment climate over the last few years that, I will be very honest with you, propelled us to invest, in particular, also as we compare to other investments around the world”, Sawan said.

He explained that Shell’s investment decisions are made with a long-term horizon in mind.

“We are investing not for one administration or five or 10 years. We want to invest for 20, 30, 40 years and, in the case of Nigeria, for many, many decades,” he added.

Highlighting recent commitments, the Shell CEO listed the company’s $5 billion investment in Bonga North, $2 billion in HI, and gas supply projects to Nigeria LNG as evidence of Shell’s sustained presence and confidence in the Nigerian economy.

Sawan also disclosed that Shell had deepened its interest in Oil Mining Lease OML 118, the Bonga Block, following the exit of TotalEnergies from the asset.

“We bought it because we want to deepen further. But that, we think, is not enough. We think there is more to invest here,” he said.

He revealed that Shell and its partners are advancing plans for the Bonga South West project, which could attract about $20 billion in foreign direct investment if it reaches the Final Investment Decision (FID) stage.

According to him, roughly half of the amount would be capital expenditure, with the balance covering operating costs and other in-country spending.

“This will be one of the biggest energy projects in the world,” Sawan said, adding that opportunities such as Bonga South remain in the investment pipeline.

Describing Shell’s renewed commitment as a “sea change” from previous years when the company was scaling back, Sawan thanked the President for providing targeted incentives that are helping to move the Bonga South West project towards FID.

“I want to thank you for the leadership you have shown there to be able to provide the incremental incentives that are now getting us line of sight to an investment in this project with our partners,” he said, while also praising the professionalism of the President’s economic and energy team.

At the meeting, President Tinubu approved the gazetting of targeted, investment-linked incentives to support the proposed Bonga South West deep offshore oil project.

He also directed his Special Adviser on Energy, Mrs Olu Arowolo-Verheijen, to facilitate the process in line with Nigeria’s legal and fiscal frameworks.

“These incentives are not blanket concessions. They are ring-fenced and investment-linked, focused on new capital and incremental production, strong local content delivery, and in-country value addition”, the President said.

Tinubu added that his administration expects the Bonga South West project to reach a Final Investment Decision within its first term, underscoring the government’s commitment to unlocking large-scale investments that will drive growth and value creation in Nigeria’s energy sector.

  • Why Africa risks missing cervical cancer elimination goal

Why Africa risks missing cervical cancer elimination goal

Africa may fall short of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health threat unless countries expand Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination programmes to cover older women who were excluded when national immunisation efforts began.

The warning was issued by MSD South Africa and Africa Health Business, which said millions of women across the continent remain unprotected despite the availability of effective vaccines.

In an analysis distributed by the African Media Agency (AMA), the organisations noted that cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women globally, despite being largely preventable through vaccination and early detection.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 94 per cent of cervical cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, with sub-Saharan Africa carrying the heaviest burden.

Nearly one in four women in the region is estimated to be living with cervical HPV infection, significantly increasing their lifetime risk of developing the disease.

MSD South Africa and Africa Health Business said available HPV vaccines can prevent almost 90 per cent of cervical cancer cases, yet millions of African women remain unvaccinated.

They observed that while current programmes prioritising girls aged nine to 14 are critical, they leave large numbers of older women without protection.

The WHO’s global strategy to eliminate cervical cancer, launched in 2018, is anchored on vaccination, screening and treatment, with a target of vaccinating 90 per cent of girls by age 15.

Although several African countries have introduced school-based HPV vaccination programmes, coverage across the continent remains uneven.

Rwanda was cited as a leading example, having introduced a national HPV vaccination programme for adolescent girls in 2011 and achieved over 90 per cent coverage. However, the organisations stressed that even in high-performing countries, women who were beyond the eligible age at the time of introduction remain at risk.

The analysis also highlighted the disproportionate burden borne by women living with HIV, noting that weakened immune systems increase vulnerability to persistent HPV infection and faster disease progression.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for the highest prevalence of HIV among women globally, underscoring the urgency of integrated prevention efforts.

MSD South Africa and Africa Health Business said evidence shows that sexually active women above 15 years still benefit from HPV vaccination, particularly when combined with regular cervical screening.

They called for catch-up vaccination programmes for older adolescents and adult women, especially those living with HIV.

Despite recent gains, only 29 of Africa’s 54 countries have introduced national HPV vaccination programmes, with regional coverage estimated at about 52 per cent, far below the WHO’s 90 per cent target.

The organisations urged governments to strengthen routine immunisation systems, secure sustainable domestic financing and expand access through existing reproductive health and HIV care services.

They also noted that industry and development partners have increased support. Between 2021 and 2025, MSD supplied more than 115 million HPV vaccine doses to low- and middle-income countries through collaboration with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.

In Nigeria, women who are above the age for free government vaccination can only access HPV vaccines through private health facilities. At some non-governmental clinics, the Gardasil 4 vaccine costs about ₦40,000 per dose, with three doses required over six months for full protection.

The organisations concluded that eliminating cervical cancer in Africa is achievable, but warned that without deliberate policy action to protect women who were previously excluded from vaccination programmes, the continent risks missing the global elimination goal.
