  • UN alarmed over attacks on healthcare sites in Sudan

UN alarmed over attacks on healthcare sites in Sudan

The United Nations is alarmed by attacks on healthcare sites in Sudan, mainly the impact on women and girls in the country, the organisation’s spokesman said.

Of the more than 2.5 million women and girls of reproductive age in Sudan, nearly 263,000 are estimated to be pregnant, said Farhan Haq, the deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“One third of them will give birth in the next three months. And all of them need access to critical reproductive health services,” the spokesman said.

In areas impacted by fighting, the World Health Organisation and the UN Population Fund report that more than two-thirds of the hospitals are closed.

Several maternity hospitals are also out of action.

Citing the International Organisation for Migration, Haq said violence in Sudan has displaced almost two million people.

The highest proportion of internally displaced persons has been in West Darfur, River Nile, White Nile and Northern states.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that over the past four weeks, it arranged for 438 trucks carrying about 17,000 tonnes of aid to go to different parts of Sudan.

Fifty trucks moved during the first two days of the latest ceasefire.

“The United Nations continues to deliver, ceasefire or not,” said Haq, adding that the world body also continues to call for an end to the fighting so that “we can reach all people in need in Sudan, wherever they are.”

  • Republicans launch push to impeach Biden

Republicans launch push to impeach Biden

Republicans voted yesterday to kickstart the formalities that could lead to Joe Biden’s impeachment, as far right lawmakers sought to seize the-party’s agenda and escalate a bitter standoff with the United States president.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted along party lines to refer a resolution that accuses the 80-year-old Democrat of “abuse of power” and “dereliction of duty” to the judiciary and homeland security committees.

Republicans accuse Biden of failing to control immigration, leading to the country’s “complete and total invasion” and “surrender of operational control” of the US-Mexico border to “foreign and criminal cartels.”

Democrats say the Republicans are simply deflecting attention from the mushrooming legal woes of former President Donald Trump, who faces more than 70 felony counts of financial fraud, mishandling government secrets and obstructing law enforcement.

Biden’s son Hunter has agreed to admit federal tax evasion charges after a probe into his financial affairs, but critics have provided no evidence of any wrongdoing ever by the president himself.

“You can’t make this stuff up. Their extremism continues to be on full display,” House Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters in Congress.

“And they are doing nothing, nothing, nothing to enhance the health, the safety or the economic wellbeing of the American people.”

Impeachment by the House — the political equivalent of a criminal indictment — would spark a “trial” by the Senate’s 100 members, who can vote to remove a president with a two-thirds majority vote.

Trump, who was impeached twice, is among three presidents to face the rebuke, although he was shielded from conviction by Republican allies in the Senate on both occasions.

While the Democrats united against Trump, House Republicans have been hamstrung by infighting this time around, with the leadership pushing back against a frivolous impeachment process that would be stymied in the Democratic-led Senate in any case.

Lauren Boebert, the far right firebrand who drafted the Biden resolution, initially pushed for a straight vote on impeachment without a committee procedure that would likely have led to embarrassing infighting on the House floor.

Oversight and Accountability Committee chairman James Comer is already leading a probe into unsubstantiated claims that Biden took bribes while he was a vice president and doesn’t expect to release a report for several months.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy — who has struggled to lead his raucous grouping, with its narrow, four-vote majority — has argued that the rank-and-file needs to let Comer finish his work, and allow any action to go through the normal committee process.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, Boebert’s former ally on the far right, has been pushing for Biden’s impeachment separately and told reporters Wednesday her colleagues needed to “get to the same place that our base is, where our Republican voters are.”

Allies of McCarthy accused right-wing lawmakers of going “rogue,” however, while The Daily Beast reported that Greene called Boebert a “little bitch” on the House floor as they bickered over whose idea the impeachment was.

The Republicans have filed 12 impeachment resolutions this year — targeting government officials from Biden and his vice president, Kamala Harris to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

The House voted 213-209 on Wednesday to censure California’s Adam Schiff for helping expose the 2016 Trump campaign’s extensive ties to Russia, prompting chants of “shame” from Democrats.

“To my Republican colleagues who introduced this resolution, I thank you. You honor me with your enmity,” Schiff said before the vote.

“You flatter me with this falsehood. You, who are the authors of a big lie about the last election, must condemn the truth tellers. And I stand proudly before you.”

    • 17 suspected cultists, 13 robbers arrested

A Police Sergeant, Oluwaniyi Ijanusi and his civilian accomplice, Maxwell Agida, have been arrested for alleged abduction, framing up and extortion of unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspects were arrested by operatives of the Lagos Police Command at Oshodi days after one of their victims took to social media to expose them.

In a three-minute and 37 seconds video, a man who claimed to be a lawyer, alleged that the criminals operated in a gang of four-men and identified themselves as police officers, narrating how they fleeced one of his clients.

He said they usually targeted young people driving flashy cars who they labeled as internet fraudsters in order to extort them.

The man said the suspects took his client into their car after accosting and threatening him, adding that they drove him round Lagos for six hours without entering any police station, while one of the suspects took over the victim’s vehicle.

The rogues searched the young man’s phone, found N2.5 million in his account, dispossessed him of the money and left him with just N10,000.

He said: “At the end of the day, they collected his phones and searched and found N2.5 million in his account.

“They forced him at gunpoint to call a Bureau de Change, who he transferred the money to and the bureau de change in turn transferred the US dollars equivalent to their contact account and left him with only N10,000.

“I want to use this medium to inform the police that some people are using police uniform to kidnap young people and fleece them.”

Based on the information provided by the lawyer, the Lagos Police Command started investigation to ascertain the veracity of the claims and eventually apprehended the Sergeant, said to be a deserter and Agida while trying to extort a woman at Oshodi.

Parading the suspects and 30 others including 17 suspected cultists, 11 traffic robbers and two armed robbers at the command headquarters in Ikeja, yesterday, spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, said the two impersonators accused the woman of committing a traffic offence and said they would take her to the LASTMA yard at Bolade where her vehicle would be seized and later auctioned.

The shocked woman raised an alarm which led to the arrest of the two suspects while the other two fled, Hundeyin said.

He commended the lawyer for the video that exposed their activities, adding that the gang usually used different methods to defraud their victims. He said preliminary investigation established that Ijanusi had been posted out of Lagos for over a year but the suspect refused to resume duty at Osun State and deserted the service.

Hundeyin said efforts had been intensified to get the other two members of the gang, who he said were civilians.

Ijanusi confirmed that he was posted out of Lagos State but he didn’t resume at his new command because he had influenced his return to Lagos and was awaiting the signal to that effect.

Hundeyin said all the suspects paraded were arrested within a week, adding that they would be charged to court immediately.

He said the 17 suspected cultists were arrested at Ikorodu, Isolo and Badagry areas of the state following the decentralisation of the command’s tactical operatives.

Asked if the notorious cultists that fled police custody had been re-arrested, Hundeyin answered in the negative but assured that the command was still on top of the matter.

He said a stolen Hilux vehicle from a car shop was recovered from the two robbery suspects at Kaduna, adding that the main suspects including a guard at the car shop were still at large.

Meanwhile, Aba residents have expressed concerns over the spate of mob justice and extra-judicial killings in the commercial hub of the state.

Respondents noted that some of the killings were between cult groups, while others were killed by residents after being caught in various nefarious activities.

There have been reported killing of several persons in Aba North, South and other suburbs within the past few months as people have resorted to self-help rather than subjecting the suspects to the criminal  justice system.

Giving account of reported jungle justice in Aba South local government area of the state, a resident of Ngwa road by East, Chukwu Uwa, said no fewer than five persons have been extra-judicially killed in the last one month.

According to Uwa, apart from the policeman that was killed by unknown gunmen in the area and some parts of Ngwa road off Ohanku, most cases of death or extra-judicial killing in Aba South LGA were cult related.

Uwa and one Mrs. Patience, a resident of Owerre-Aba begged the government of Abia State to liaise with the heads of security agencies to fashion out how best to reduce or nip extra-judicial killings in Aba South in the bud.

Group to IG: go after politicians trying to truncate democracy

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun has been urged to go after those trying to truncate the nation’s  democracy.

Ebonyi State indigenes, under the aegis of Odinmma Ndi Ebonyi, gave the charge during a news conference addressed by its Convener, Dr. Laz Eze in Abuja.

The group alleged conspiracy and forgery of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) BVAS Report and Compliance Certificate of the Presidential and National Assembly Election of February 25, 2023 in Ebonyi South Senatorial District

It also called on the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) to act according to the law and dwell on the strength of verifiable and valid evidence before it.

The group urged the IGP to constitute a crack forensic team to investigate the allegations and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book without delay if found culpable.

The group said: “It has come to the notice of Odinmma Ndi Ebonyi that there may be an illicit cartel in the Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that is allegedly specialized in the forgery of BVAS reports and other INEC documents for unscrupulous politicians to the detriment of the wishes of the Nigerian electorate. This much was revealed in a petition by aggrieved parties to the Inspector General of Police dated June 13, 2023.

“We are also aware that the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), a man of high professional standing and integrity, had on his appointment promised to “devour the internal enemies of Nigeria like a Lion”. Odinmma Ndi Ebonyi is convinced that there are no greater enemies of Nigeria than those focused on truncating her democracy and its gains so far. Accordingly, this is a test case for the IGP to prove his commitment and resolve to fight crimes to the hilt.

“We call on the Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun in line with his vow and resolve to fight the “enemies of Nigeria”, to immediately constitute a crack forensic team to investigate these grave allegations and, if found to be true, ensure that the perpetrators of such evil against the people of Nigeria are brought to book without delay.

“We call on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to openly cooperate with the police and the Nigerian public to unravel this allegation in the interest of the integrity of the Commission and the development of our democracy.

“We call on all courts handling election petitions, especially in the case of Ebonyi state, to be on the alert and ensure that they are not hoodwinked or smeared by unscrupulous and desperate politicians, but discharge their duty according to law and; most importantly, on the strength of verifiable and valid evidences; in the interest of justice and rule of law.

“We also use this opportunity to call on the media, civil society and the general public to be vigilant and stand by Nigeria’s democracy by impressing on INEC, the police and indeed the judiciary-the last hope of the common man-that justice must prevail!”
