Reviewed remuneration: RMAFC urges 36 states’ Assemblies to amend relevant laws

The Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has urged the 36  Houses of Assembly to fast-track the amendment of relevant laws to give room for upward review of remuneration packages for political, judicial and public officers.

The commission’s chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Shehu, spoke at the presentation of reports of the reviewed remuneration package to Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris yesterday in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that work by the Houses of Assembly would allow for the commencement of implementation of the reviewed remuneration packages for political, public and judicial officers.

The RMAFC chairman, who was represented by the Federal Commissioner, Mrs. Rakiya Tanko-Ayuba, an indigene of Kebbi State, presented the report to the governor during a visit at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi.

Shehu said the move was in line with the provision of Paragraph 32(d) of Part 1 of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Government (as amended).

He said: “It empowers the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission to determine the remuneration appropriate for political office holders, including the President, Vice President, governors, deputy governors, ministers, commissioners, special advisers, legislators and the holders of the offices mentioned in Sections 84 and 124 of the Constitution of Federal Government.”

Shehu said the last review of the remuneration was carried out in 2007, which culminated in the “Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) (Amendment) Act, 2008.

“Sixteen years after the last review, it is imperative that the remuneration packages for the categories of the office holders mentioned in relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) should be reviewed.

“Pursuant to the above, Your Excellency may please recall that on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, the commission held a one-day zonal public hearing on the review of the remuneration package simultaneously in all the six geo-political zones of the country.

“The aim of the exercise was to harvest inputs/ideas from a broad spectrum of stakeholders,” he said.

According to the chairman, the commission has reviewed the remuneration packages as contained in the reports based on a combination of subjective and objective criteria.

  • Court to deliver judgment in Nnamdi Kanu’s suit against DSS

Court to deliver judgment in Nnamdi Kanu’s suit against DSS

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed July 20 for judgment in a suit filed by Leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, against the Department of State Services (DSS) to allow him unhindered access to his medical doctor.

Justice Binta Nyako fixed the date after Kanu’s counsel, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), and lawyer to the DSS, A. M. Danlami, adopted their processes and presented their arguments for and against the suit.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kanu, through his team of lawyers led by Ozekhome, had sued the DSS and its Director General as first and second respondents in the matter.

Kanu prayed the court for permission to apply for an order of mandamus to compel the DSS to allow him have unhindered access to his medical doctor, among others.

The court had, on February 1, granted Kanu the permission to apply for an order of mandamus he sought after an ex parte motion moved by Ozekhome to the effect.

But in a preliminary objection filed by the DSS, the security outfit urged the court to dismiss the suit for want of jurisdiction.

It argued that there was a subsisting judgment of a sister court delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo (retd.) on June 3, 2022 in suit between Kanu and the DSS boss and two others wherein the court dealt substantially with the issue of allowing the IPOB leader access to his personal physician.

It said the instant suit was similar to the earlier one and that Kanu had filed an appeal against the judgment.

Upon resumed hearing, Ozekhome told the court that the motion, dated February 2, was served on the respondents February 3, seeking an order of mandamus against the respondents to allow the IPOB leader unfettered access to his doctor in accordance with the earlier order of Justice Nyako, which he alleged had been flouted by the DSS.

The lawyer argued that the act was against Section 7 of the Anti-Torture Act.

He said 10 exhibits were attached to the affidavit and two of the exhibits detailed Kanu’s medical report before he was renditioned on June 27, 2021 and a medical report of his present health status.

Ozekhome said the application sought that an independent doctor be allowed to attend to him in the presence of the security operatives.

He dismissed allegations that Kanu jumped bail on April 25, 2017 after the court granted him bail.

But Danlami urged the court to dismiss Kanu’s plea for lack of jurisdiction.

The lawyer said in their counter-affidavit with four exhibits, one of the exhibits showed that Kanu was physically and clinically sound.

The judge adjourned the matter till July 20 for judgment.

How cleaning firms, practitioners can survive hard times, by Engr Pompey

    • By Asiwaju Ezra

The CEO of Punpin Concept Venture Dr Awosanmi Olutayo aka Engr Pompey has called on cleanerpreneuers to rise to the changing faces of the cleaning industry.

He said the cleaning was undergoing many innovations that must be handled well by owners of cleaning firms.

The cleaning coach, who is also the CEO of PCV Training Academy, one of the cleaning academies in Nigeria, said many cleaning practitioners have complained about absenteeism and disappointment among workers.

He said many clients are also unwilling to accept increase in prices despite the rising costs of production, leaving many cleaning practitioners seriously challenged.

Engr. Pompey emphasised that the cleaning industry has undergone remarkable transformation in recent years, which has forced cleaning practitioners to seek knowledge and train workforce regularly.

To manage the current situation, he advised companies to develop customised cleaning plans and schedules that ensure every working hour counts and shows productive results.

He also suggested that cleaners integrate smart technologies such as robotic vacuum cleaners and smart sensors that monitor cleanliness levels, to address the rising absenteeism of the workforce.

Engr. Pompey also advised that counselling be provided to boost the morale of workers during this challenging period and rewards for excellent performance be encouraged.

According to him, employers must be prepared to bear the cost to keep the business going and retain the quality of service they deliver.

To ensure a fair balance, employees must increase productivity, especially in the area of sales or generating income for the company.

Engr. Pompey advised every cleanerpreneur or service provider to price their services effectively, considering all necessary factors before offering quotations to clients.

In his opinion, it is better to break even than to lose on the job or transaction.

Engr. Pompey urged the federal government to support citizens and businesses during this difficult period, saying that the multiplier effect of the removal of fuel subsidies is having a significant impact on the prices of goods and services.

He also reminded cleanerpreneurs and service providers that not everyone who is a consumer is their customer, and that they should avoid the temptation to take fewer offers for a job, as this could damage their quality standards and reputation

Euro 2024 :Southgate counsels England players over summer transfers
Gareth Southgate said England players should not spend their summer being concerned about potential transfer activity, but joked members of his squad were “tapping each other up on the quiet” while on international duty.
Several members of Southgate’s squad, including captain Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Kyle Walker and James Maddison, are the subject of interest from other clubs and could be on the move during the summer transfer window.
The England manager said transfer talk would not disrupt preparations for today’s Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia and urged his players to not let it weigh heavy on them during the summer.
“I haven’t felt the need to say anything,” Southgate said. “I mean, the players are tapping each other up anyway on the quiet, so I can’t do anything about that!
“What I have said is that these things run their course, they happen in their own time, you can’t force it as a player. Don’t get frustrated, don’t be asking all summer. You don’t need to be updated on every call that happens.
“There’s a lot of negotiation that goes on. I remember as a player getting too wrapped up in every detail of that. In the end, there’s only a small amount that you can actually control.
“I think all of those things will happen later on in the summer and I think the players understand that, really.
“And they know the focus for the next 36 hours is this game, finishing the season well, making sure we’re set on 12 points and we’ll be in a very healthy position if we do that.”
Southgate has no fresh injury concerns ahead of today’s Euro 2024 qualifier at Old Trafford.
England sit top of Group C after winning their opening three matches against Italy, Ukraine and Malta.
None of the five Manchester City players in the England squad started Friday’s 4-0 victory over Malta on Friday, which came six days after their Champions League final victory over Inter Milan, with only Phil Foden featuring from the bench at half time.
Southgate said it was “possible” members the City quintet could feature in the starting line-up against North Macedonia.
“Possible. It’s possible,” the England manager added. “There are obviously some very talented (Man City) players and some very important players for us and it is difficult to name a team, there’s no question about that. We’ve looked at the opposition as well and making sure we get the balance of our team right.”
