    Oyebanji mourns Ekiti APC leader

    By Emmanuel Oladesu

Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji has paid tribute to the Afenifere chieftain and Chairman of Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Forum, Chief George Akosile, who passed on yesterday.

The deceased retired from the civil service as a Permanent Secretary in the old Ondo State and later served as State Chairman of the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

Oyebanji, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Yinka Oyebode, said Ekiti has lost a great patriot, a servant-leader, a committed democrat, and an illustrious elder, who loved the state and gave his best for its development.

The governor noted that the late Chief Akosile was a principled politician and an exemplary Awoist who led by example and served selflessly in all the positions he occupied in the civil service, political parties, elders’ circles, and government.

He remarked that Akosile jealously guarded his name and integrity in his public service trajectory, adding that the deceased’s country home in Igbara Odo Ekiti served as a Mecca for those who needed his wise counsel, guidance, and direction on how the state could move forward.

Describing his demise as a personal loss to him, the Governor said the deceased was a leader he looked up to as a young politician, adding that he had lost a political father whose life was an inspiration to him and those coming behind.

According to him, the late Chief Akosile shone brilliantly in the last major assignment he handled on behalf of the party, as the Chairman of the Political Appointments Committee of his administration, adding that he gave his best shot despite being advanced in age.

He said Akosile’s faithful, honest, and truthful lifestyle had always made him relevant in every progressive administration in the old Ondo State and Ekiti State which led to his being entrusted with positions of leadership in which he served to the best of his ability.

The governor said Ekiti State and its people will remain ever grateful to the deceased for his selfless service and laudable contribution to the entrenchment of democracy and the development of the state.

Oyebanji commiserated with the family, friends and political associates of the deceased urging them to be consoled by the good life he lived and the worthy legacies he has left behind.

“We shall miss Baba. But we are consoled with the fact he lived a good life and left behind legacies of integrity and service.

“On behalf of the Government and good people of the State, I express our condolences to the children and immediate family members and pray that God will grant Baba eternal rest and grant the family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.” The Governor added.

The governor has paid a condolence visit to the deceased residence in Igbara Odo, where he met with the children and family members.

Subsidy removal: Ekiti retirees demand upward adjustment of pension, gratuities

Pensioners in Ekiti State have demanded upward adjustment of their pensions and gratuity in view of the present economic reality occasioned by the removal of subsidies on petroleum products.

The retirees under the aegis of the National Union of Pension(NUP), said their demands was in line with section 210 of the 1999 constitution which states that pensions should be reviewed every five years or anytime workers’ salaries were reviewed.

Addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti during a prayer session, the NUP Chairman, Ekiti State chapter, Mr. Joel Akinola, said it was unjust that while civil servant wages were being reviewed, nothing was done about pensioners.

Akinola who lamented that pensioners are living in abject poverty as a result of non-payment of their entitlement, said that pensions that were based on the economic indices of 10 years ago were no longer sustainable

He explained there are pensioners who still earn as meager as N500 to N2,000 monthly, wondering how such people would cope with the present economic reality where a litre of fuel is N500.

The NUP chairman lamented that many pensioners across the state are living in abject poverty, adding that some of their children, who are supposed to take care of them, are also unemployed.

He said: “Government should see us as a special project; we deserve better attention because we are the fowl that laid the golden egg.

“In hospitals, there should be a special desk for pensioners, where we can access treatment easily at subsidised rate because we are vulnerable.

“We have invested in the future, and we should be allowed to enjoy it now; it’s our due and right, and we deserve to be paid even with interest.

“We won’t tolerate the excuse that government does not have money, because we see what past government used our money for in Ekiti. The governor and many politicians were growing fat and went home with billions of naira, and they deliberately ignored our cries as if we never mattered.

“Anytime there is increase in salary of workers, our pension should also be reviewed upward to meet current realities. I don’t know what N500 can buy now and that is the monthly pension of some of us.”

Stop playing politics with Yoruba tradition, reinstate suspended monarchs, Adeleke urged

A civil society group, World Institute for Peace(WIP) has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to reinstate three suspended Osun monarchs and to stop playing politics with Yoruba tradition.

Adeleke had recently slammed suspension on three monarchs- Akirun of Ikirun, Owa of Igbajo, and Aree of Iree appointed by his predecessor, ex-Governor Adegboyega Oyetola at the twilight of his administration in 2022 alleging that the installation of the monarchs did not follow due process.

In a statement issued on Friday, WIP’s  Executive Director, Lamina Omotoyosi described  Adeleke’s action as a misplacement of duty stressing that it is the role of the judiciary to nullify the installation process of a king.

The statement read in part: “There are several cases of kingship tussle in court before Adeleke was sworn-in as governor including that of his hometown, Timi of Ede who celebrated 15 years on the throne, Ataoja of Osogbo. No past governor in the state has ever dethroned or suspended a king due to the installation process. Adeleke should learn from history and let the judiciary decide.

“The governor ought to appeal to the aggrieved parties in the affected communities to allow court processes and beef up security apparatus in the areas and give warning to anyone who may want to cause trouble. Adeleke displayed executive power in the manner that his action can only be described as a sentiment.”

He added: “Adeleke should simply know that those kings were installed within the context of the constitutional right of the former governor. He should stop playing politics with Yoruba tradition. The governor should allow for the reinstating of the monarchs concerned. Be it as it may, it’s highly ridiculous for the government of Osun State, the cradle of Yoruba land, to interface with the construct of its traditional rulers.”

Salu-Hundeyin’s appointment as SSG followed her acting national leadership role at NPC, where she supervised the full digitisation of the Commission’s activities. She is of Awori descent from the Alimosho area of Lagos.

The governor explained that the Chief of Staff and his deputy earned their return to their roles purely on merit, having performed with records of accomplishments in their first appointments.

He urged them to see their re-appointment as another call for greater commitment to the service of the people of Lagos, asking them to exhibit positive attributes and recommit their efforts towards bringing about improved governance and purposeful leadership to the State’s citizens.

He said: “We are witnessing the first set of key members of our administration, who will assist Mr. Deputy Governor and myself in piloting the affairs of our State of Excellence and achieving our renewed goals of facilitating the rising of Greater Lagos for another four years. I congratulate Mr. Tayo Ayinde and Mr. Gboyega Soyannwo on their re-appointment as Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Staff.

“The decision to bring you on board once again in the same capacities as done in the first term is a testament and indication to your high level of performance, competence, hard work, and the unparalleled loyalty you have shown. You both are deserving of this opportunity and you earned it. Your re-appointment is a call to greater commitment to the service of the people of Lagos.

“I also congratulate and welcome Barr. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin on board as the new Secretary to the State Government. She is an erudite and experienced solicitor of the Supreme Court with over three decades of experience at the bar. Given her track record and proven dedication to the promotion of the interest of Lagos, which she demonstrated admirably at the NPC, I have no doubts she will be of great value to this administration.”

Sanwo-Olu reminded the appointees that their engagement must be seen as a call to serve the people in their respective roles, urging them to bring their talents and knowledge to bear on the planning, development, and implementation of State policies, programmes and initiatives aimed to enhance socio-economic growth and development of Lagos

The Governor told the appointees to reciprocate the opportunity given them by working hard and ensuring smooth implementation of the administration’s “THEMES Plus” development agenda across key areas that would have a greater impact on the State economy and the residents.

“Our commitment to build a sustainable future for our citizens is unshaken, our will is unwavering. We will do everything on our part to ensure that we surpass all of our successes in our first tenure. The team which Mr. Deputy Governor and myself will be putting together will ensure that every fibre we have will be put into the service of Lagos State,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Sanwo-Olu said governance would be redefined in the State, with the assumption of office of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Governor recommitted the State to working with the Federal Government to ensure more dividends of democracy for Lagosians.

The Governor thanked the immediate past SSG, Mrs. Folasade Jaji, for her invaluable service and contributions to the success recorded by his administration in the first term.

Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, said the first tenure of the Sanwo-Olu administration recorded significant progress and a high level of performance due to the determination, collaboration, commitment, and team work of the previous cabinet members.

Muri-Okunola said the Governor’s approval of the appointees’ nomination resulted from a careful examination of details of their antecedents, records of service and records of achievements prior to making the decision.

“High expectations of the ever-increasing population of Lagos is the basis for Mr. Governor’s painstaking consideration and efforts at the appointment of the new cabinet members for the purpose of not only maintaining the standard but also to meet the yearnings and surpassing the already laid standard informed the choice of appointment and reappointment of these tested and trusted persons of high integrity by Mr. Governor,” the Head of Service said.

Salu-Hundeyin, giving a note of assurance on behalf of her colleagues, said the appointees swore to be diligent, selfless, and dedicated in their service to the State.

“Mr. Governor, we will give nothing but 100 per cent loyalty to your administration and to the people of Lagos,” she said.

Subsidy: Be hopeful, Tinubu has good plans for Nigeria – Braithwaite

Barrister Olumide Braithwaite, son to late elder statesman and former presidential candidate and founder of the Nigeria Advance Party (NAP), has urged Nigerians to brace up to the hardship brought about by the removal of petroleum subsidy, believing that in due course the situation will amend and Nigeria will again flourish.

Barr Braithwaite, who served as a spokesperson of the APC Tinubu/Shettima Grassroots Independent Campaign Council (ICC), noted that

the country has suffered seriously as a result of corruption in the oil sector and previous administration had not been able to give Nigerians their satisfaction as producer of crude oil.

Speaking in an interview in Makurdi, Braithwaite urged Nigerians to be a little more patient and realistic in their expectations, considering where the country is coming from.

According to him, power and energy problems needed to be prioritised, noting that once the challenge of power and energy is resolved, the economy will excel.

He said if power and energy are given priority attention, the country’s healthy sector will benefit, manufacturing industries will benefit, schools, hospitals, small and medium scale enterprise, and the cottage industries will all benefit to increase productivity and output.

  • Nigeria, Africa must pay attention to child education, health to attain dev – UNICEF

Nigeria, Africa must pay attention to child education, health to attain dev – UNICEF

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) has said that for Nigeria and Africa as a whole to attain the desired development, attention must be paid to education, health and nutrition of children.

It said it was against that backdrop that UNICEF, with the support of other partners, launched the Nigeria Learning Passport to expand access to quality learning for children in Nigeria, adding that 280,000 learners, teachers, parents and young people across Nigeria have so far benefited from the passport.

The UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, Ms Cristian Munduate, stated this while addressing newsmen as part of this year’s celebration of the Day of African Child held at LEA Sheik Abubakar Gumi Primary School Kaduna.

Ms Munduate stated that children in Africa need opportunities to acquire sound education, good health and nutrition in their early years.

She explained that after the children acquire education, they can take roles in their adolescent life by having opportunities to learn skills that could help them go through adult wood.

According to her, the best way to celebrate the Day of the African Child is with education. “Once the child reaches five years survival, health and nutrition are in place, the best investment that we can do is education”

“If we want a prosperous nation, prosperous Nigeria and prosperous Africa, we have to put children first, because it is where everything starts for the good and not for the bad.”

She however congratulated the children of Kaduna State and indeed every Nigerian child on the occasion of this year’s Day of the Africa Child.

According to her, this year, the theme is apt, because it focuses attention on an important aspect of the right that children – like adults – should have, to wit, access to the digital platforms and skills.

Ms Munduate who was taken on tour of the LEA primary school and saw children accessing learning through the Nigeria Learning Passport digital platform, described it as apt in the learning process for the children.

  • Court vacates sack order on IGP

Court vacates sack order on IGP

The Federal High Court in Awka has vacated its sack order on Police Inspector-General Usman Alkali Baba.

The court upheld the right of Alkali to fair hearing as enshrined in Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, which was not guaranteed by the plaintiff, Okechukwu Nwafor, in his application.

It said it was convinced by the depositions of the court bailiff that the IGP was not served the originating summons.

Justice Fatun Riman reversed the court’s earlier judgment, following an application by IGP’s counsel, Abdullahi Abdulhakeem Ago.

The Court had in its first order of May 19, 2023, declared Alkali Baba an illegal occupant of the office of the IGP, adding that his continued stay in office was against the clear provisions of the Police Act, 2020.

However, the IGP approached  the court to set aside the judgment because the subject matter had been determined by another Federal High Court presided over by Justice J.K. Omotosho in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/31/2023.

The police chief also alleged that the court should quash its judgment due to non-service of the originating processes on him.

The court upheld the arguments of the Inspector-General of Police in a 17-page ruling on June 15, 2023.

Justice Riman said a court can reverse its judgment where there was a fundamental error.

The judge said: “The law is settled that any Court of record, including the Supreme Court has the inherent jurisdiction to set aside its own Judgment given in any proceeding in which there must have been a fundamental defect, such as one which goes to the issue of jurisdiction and competence of the Court

“Such a judgment is a nullity. A person affected by it, is therefore, entitled ex-debito justicae to have it set aside. The court can set it aside suo motu and the person affected may apply by motion and not necessarily by way of Appeal.”

A judgment or order which is a nullity owing to failure to comply with an essential provision such as service of process can be set aside by the court which gave it or made the order…

“I find merit in this application. Accordingly, the judgment of this court delivered on 19th day of May 2023 is hereby set aside for non- service of the originating processes on the 2nd Defendant (the Inspector-General of Police). This is the ruling of this court.”

Uzodimma to editors: Support Tinubu’s government

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has called on members of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his quest to make Nigeria a better place for all.

The Governor made the call on Friday in his remarks while flagging off the Nigerian Guild of Editors National Biennial Convention 2023 in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The convention effectively brought to an end the tenure of the Mustapha Isa-led NGE executive to usher in a new one.

Governor Uzodimma reminded the editors that they are partners in progress with the government; hence they must professionally play their constitutional role in the interest of the society.

The Governor commended the Mr Isa-led executive and members of the Guild for their efforts so far in ensuring that the good stories about Nigeria are brought to public domain without compromising their professional ethics, reminding them, however, that the country is making steady progress in her democratic journey since the return of democracy in 1999 despite obvious hiccups.

He also lauded the choice of the theme for the Convention: Post 2023 election: Promoting Professionalism for Enhancement of Democracy and Good Governance.

He said: “Your theme for this conference, “Post – 2023 Election: Promoting professionalism for enhancement of Democracy and Good Governance” is rather apt, given the divergent opinions that trailed the conduct of the recently concluded general elections, and how the media reported the fall outs. As the saying goes, opinions are free, but facts remain sacred. Without pre-empting the guest lecturer in his interrogation of the topic, let me state that I am of the opinion that the traditional media discharged their duties creditably during the 2023 elections.”

He welcomed the editors to Imo State, particularly for their choice of Owerri for the Convention and thanked the NGE president profoundly for his kind words and observations about his person and Imo State.

Governor Uzodinma also welcomed the Guest lecturer, Dr Chido Nwakanma of the Pan Atlantic University, Lagos and commended the media practitioners for finding the state worthy of hosting them twice in less than one year.

Taking time to highlight some of the achievements of his administration, the Governor said: “Apart from the prompt payment of salaries and pensions, my administration has religiously pursued our prosperity agenda encapsulated in Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Recovery. After your annual conference last year, our dear former President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, was here to commission our flagship dual carriageways that connect the State capital to the major cities of Orlu and Okigwe.

We have also completed the MCC -Uratta -Toronto road while the Owerri – Mbaise – Obowo – Umuahia road and Orlu – Mgbee – Akokwa – Uga road are nearing completion. These are among the more than 100 standard roads built by this administration within a space of 40 months. This is in addition to equally significant progress recorded in various other sectors like education, health, industry, youth empowerment and social services, which my administration identified as priorities.”
