NPFL: Enyimba receive prize money from GTI

Strategic partner to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), GTI Asset Management and Trust Limited has officially confirmed that champions of the just concluded NPFL Championship Play-offs, Enyimba International Football Club of Aba has received their N100million prize money from the company.

Project Director of The Nigeria Football Fund (TNFF), Nelson Ine revealed t in a press release yesterday that  the management of Enyimba expressed their profound gratitude to GTI and the Interim Management Committee (IMC) for making this happen.

“On behalf of GTI Asset Management and Trust Limited I want to confirm the receipt of the prize money of N100million by the 2022/2023 NPFL champions Enyimba FC of Aba.

“I personally spoke with the team officials and management of the club as they all confirmed that the money is now in the account of the club,” Ine said.

He further revealed that the remaining five clubs who took part in the NPFL Championship Play-offs that held in Lagos from June 3 to 11, also received N5million each for qualifying and participating in the competition.

Ine stated that GTI has fulfilled its promise to the clubs which they made prior to the beginning of the abridged league and charged the clubs to utilize the funds judiciously for the good of football development in Nigeria.

“As an organization, we are strongly committed to repositioning the Nigeria Premier Football League and that is why we hit the ground running. Next season will be keenly contested because the stakes will be higher than what we saw this season.

“Our advice to clubs is for them to go all out and attract the services of the best legs in the continent and beyond and fortify their teams ahead of next season.

“GTI and IMC have just set the tone and there will be no going back in the restructuring of our league. Nigerian clubs can do the needful by working towards regaining their dominance in African club football. Our worthy champions Enyimba did it in 2003 and 2004 respectively and they can do it again alongside Remo Stars and Rivers United.

“GTI has set up a transparent football ecosystem which is the best way to restore confidence in our clubs, sponsors, investors and stakeholders of our beautiful game,” he concluded.

  • I regret falling in love with colleague

I regret falling in love with colleague

ABAYOMI Alvin is an actor, model, screenwriter and an entrepreneur, who grew up in Akure, Ondo state as a young quiet dude but ended up on the screen as a Nollywood hunk and popular skit character. He had a series of auditions and eventually got his first role in a movie, ‘Collateral War’ in 2014 directed by Iwuanyanwu Chuks and produced by Chioma Okeke. Alvin rose to prominence after featuring in Funke Akindele’s Jenifa’s Diary and Jade Osiberu’s debut as a director and producer, Isoken. In this interview with The NATION’s ADENIYI ADEWOYIN, this graduate of Sociology and Anthropology from Obafemi Awolowo University spoke on his rising profile in Nollywood, as a skitmaker and his relationship with a female colleague that turned sour.

You do more skits lately, what prompted you to switch to skits?

I won’t say I switched, if you check my social media pages as far as 2015/16, you will see contents that I have been creating. I will just say I never really took it seriously then, it was more like fun. Way back, I’ve shot with Broda Shaggi, Officer Woss, Mr Macaroni, I mean the big names in the content creation industry. So, I will just say I took it more seriously these past couple of months or years which now made it look as if I switched from Nollywood to online content creation. I still had three of my movies in cinemas earlier this year and more are coming later this year. I’m still very much in Nollywood. The reason you have been seeing my face online is because I took content creation really seriously just as I take acting seriously. The world is changing and as an entertainer you have to find a way to be relevant.

Do you see yourself dumping professional acting for skit making?

No, it’s always funny when people say professional acting. What do they do in skits? It’s also acting and they get paid too. People invite me to shoot content and they pay me too. But no, I’m not leaving professional acting for online content creation.

    Which pays more?

It’s a personal thing. I’ll say content creation pays more and here is my reason. As an actor, you can’t really control how much you make in a month for example. You can say I want to make N20 million but what if the job that would pay you that amount doesn’t come? But as a content creator who is really hard working, you can control how much you make. If your social media pages are monetized, then you know how much is coming in a month. Based on that I will say content creation pays more in Nigeria.

You appear to me as a jovial guy, what’s your life outside acting like?

I’m just actually a very simple guy. I like to take life step by step. If I have 100 problems, I solve them one at a time. I watch a lot of movies and most times, I prefer being indoors and it’s safer, you avoid problems when you are indoors. I won’t say I’m an introvert but indoors is just cool. Outdoor is just wahala especially in Lagos – traffic, billing, a lot of billing. I appreciate my fans but some of them just don’t know how to stop, you must make funds transfer.

How do you keep up with movie sets and other personal things?

Scheduling basically. Most producers give at least two weeks’ notice and some even contact you one or three months ahead. I’ve got plans, I have scheduled and planned my life. If I decide to stay home and make the day be about me and my family, it’s going to stay that way.

Can you fall in love with an actress while on the job?

I did it once and it didn’t end well, so I don’t know if I can do that again. I don’t even know why it didn’t end well. I wish I just left us as friends. Maybe, we would have been the best of friends right now. It’s one of the regrets I have. In fact, we ended up blocking each other.

But you guys still work together on set?

Yes, there was this one time we were on set after breaking up and were meant to kiss. It was so weird. Funny enough, not a lot of people knew because we were still professional, it was just a few people in our inner circle knew that these guys used to be very close but not anymore. The producer and director didn’t know, we kissed and it was so romantic. What I’ve learned it in life is never to say never, there are things I said I wouldn’t do many years back and I find myself doing these things these days.

Celebrities are seen as role models, especially those who tell their grass to grace story

(Cuts in) First off, I tell people not to see me as their role model just pick a few things because nobody is perfect so that you don’t see me on the news one day and be like oh my role model. You may see one of two things to admire like my acting, my style, my dress sense but don’t put me on this pedestal that makes me almost robotic, I am a human being, I’m meant to make mistakes and when I do, I want people to also treat me as a human being because even those seeing me as role model do make mistakes so who am I not to make mistakes.

    Tell me about your childhood

Childhood and growing up was quite interesting in Akure, Ondo State. If you had told people then that I was going to grow up to be in people’s faces for entertainment, they would have said it’s a lie because I was a reserved kid. Although, I had always known I had a thing for telling stories because many times when I watch a movie, I’m always the one narrating to my friends and even sometimes when I’m alone in my house, I’m always acting alone.

How did acting start for you?

I started as a model even though I’ve always admired acting from primary/secondary school but I never saw myself as an actor maybe because I grew up in Akure (laughs). I came to Lagos to spend some holidays with my extended family and that was when my physique started coming out as an adolescent and I started getting advice to be a model. I went to a couple of modelling competitions which I won like Mr Ideal Osun State and Mr Ideal Nigeria. From there, I started seeing that they don’t really appreciate models, so I started going for acting auditions. I remember getting my first role alongside Uche Maduagwu in 2013/14.

You weren’t based in Lagos then?

I used to come to Lagos every week from school (Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife). I used to think as Mr Ideal I could face the crowd, I just saw one scene in the movie with just life lines but I couldn’t deliver, I’m not joking. I had so many takes that I was sweating like Christmas goat, the director was so angry at me. I wasn’t paid but if they had paid me I would have rejected the money because I know I what I did (laughs). I went home thinking about my life and how I risked my life travelling every week to Lagos. The never dying spirit in me made me continue. I’ve read stories of top actors, they never started as top actors. I am one of those actors that learned on the job. I went to a whole lot of auditions that I wasn’t picked. I went for Jenifa’s Diary audition, waited for three days squatting with friends before I was eventually called. I was so excited and told everyone that I’ve been called to join Aunty Funke Akindele’s set, I thought it was a major role but on getting there it was waka pass role. I don’t know what she saw in me but she called me for another movie and guess what? It was still waka pass (laughs).

You are also a script writer, at what point did you become one?

At some point when roles weren’t coming, I learned about script writing too and wrote a couple of scripts. We were on set one day and Funke Akindele came, she saw me and we exchanged pleasantries, the director on set then told her that I now write scripts then she gave me her number that there’s a script conference for Jenifa’s diary and that was how I became a writer on Jenifa’s Diary.  From there, I had my first cinema movie ‘Isoken’, my first series with Africa Magic ‘Jemeji’ and from there it’s been a very good ride.

What were you doing before you started acting?

Before I started acting, I was in university. I started acting while  at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Before acting came up, I had tried my hands on many things.

I once worked as a sales representative before entering the university and I also managed a salon. I also tried music and modelling before I finally went into acting.

What project shot you into the limelight?

I wouldn’t say that it was a particular project that shot me into the limelight, rather, a couple of projects were responsible for that. Jenifa’s Diary definitely tops the list. It gave me the first exposure. Though the character I played left two to three years ago, people still see me on the road and call me Austin (the character I played in the series). Then, there was  Isoken, MTV Shuga, Mums At War, Casanova, Tinsel and others.  These movies contributed to taking me to the place I am today.

How long did it take you to hit the limelight?

I wouldn’t even say I see myself as someone that has hit the limelight yet. But of course, I have got  a level of fame but the limelight I want to hit is way more than this. I don’t want to be an actor only in Nigeria. I want to be known all over Africa and the world like Burna Boy, Wizkid and Davido. They are pulling the crowd. The way they are doing in music, I also want to do that in acting too because I believe I have the capability to do it. It’s been seven years now since I started acting.

Has stardom deprived you of anything?

Stardom has definitely deprived me of things. My privacy is not there anymore. Sometimes, I just want to go for a peaceful jog but people will recognise me and want to greet me. Some will even stare and stare till I become uncomfortable.

Are you still friends with people you knew before now?

My best friend is my friend since the university days. I still keep my childhood friends and we still talk.

Why desperate politicians are spreading rumours
    about Akeredolu’s health –Aide

Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and Strategy to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, says desperate politicians are  sustaining  the onslaught of negative publications against the governor to have unfettered access to the state’s treasury.

Odebowale said the rumour mongers were beneficiaries of the governor.

He  said the authors of the rumour planned to draw mileage from the absence of the governor.

Odebowale, in a statement issued last night in Akure, said they (the desperate politicians) would stop at nothing to stoke the ember of contrived acrimony to take maximum advantage of the current situation.

According to the statement: “These rootless politicians, ostensible representatives of the people without followers, believe that the best way to portray the current health challenge of the governor is to spread falsehood against those perceived as impediments to their prebendal predilections.

“They are setting members of the Executive Council against one another, dropping dangerous but mendacious hints against their fellow appointees.

“They praise some as “honest”, “brilliant” and “diligent” while condemning others, perceived to being in the “opposing camp”, as “corrupt” and “inordinately ambitious”. They hold constant meetings, speculating on the state of health of the governor.

“These elements attract negative sentiments to an administration which had enjoyed relative peace and overwhelming goodwill from the people, based on impactful achievements.”

“So far, so good, you’ve seen how the President has started, this is not a new thing to him, he’s a good administrator, with good policies. He’s going to fulfil all his campaign promises.

  • NNPC Ltd, ONHYM, others sign MoU on $25bn Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline

NNPC Ltd, ONHYM, others sign MoU on $25bn Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline

The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project has advanced with the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) to ensure progress and strategic direction of the 25 billion dollar Trans-Atlantic gas pipeline project.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the four MoUs were signed on Friday in Abuja at the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Headquarters during the project’s first Steering Committee Meeting.

The agreements were signed between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd), Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines (ONHYM) of Morocco, and the Société Nationale des Opérations Pétrolières of Cote d’Ivoire (PETROCI),

Others include the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL), the Société Nationale des Hydrocarbures of Benin (SNH-Benin), and the Société Nationale des Pétroles of the Republic of Guinea (SONAP).

Once completed, the project will enhance the monetisation of the natural gas resources of the affected African countries and also offer a new alternative export route to Europe.

Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd, in his remarks, disclosed that currently, FEED Phase II Study was at over 70 percent in the tendering process for the surveys, with clear visibility in project funding.

Kyari listed the surveys as the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and the Land Acquisition and Resettlement Policy Framework (LARPF).

“We are also pleased to welcome our counterparts from NOCAL of Liberia, PETROCI of Cote D’Ivoire, SNH Benin and SONAP of Guinea for committing to collaborate with us on this project through the execution of MoU.

“This is a clear demonstration of the commitment of the Host Governments, the ECOWAS Commission, and the National Oil Companies to deliver on this strategic project and create wealth and value for our countries and other stakeholders.

“As you are aware, our collective decisions and actions guided by our shared vision would extend far beyond gas supply to spur prosperity and economic integration between our nations,’’ he said.

Kyari, while expressing appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for entrusting NNPC Ltd. with the strategic project, acknowledged the ECOWAS Commission’s role in co-hosting the meeting in addition to the planned execution of the Treaty, Host Government Agreements and other enablers.

Also speaking, the Director-General of ONHYM, Madam Amina Benkhadra said that the gathering represented a progressive step in ensuring social and economic development through energy security and accessibility geared towards attaining total development of Africa by Africans.

In his remarks, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitisation, Mr Sédiko Douka said the pipeline was designed from Nigeria to Morocco, passing through Atlantic Coast States, with inland ramps to supply the Interland Countries, possibly to Europe.

“The project will strengthen our electricity production/generation capacity, stimulate industrial,  agricultural development, and contribute to the energy transition by using a source of energy that is cleaner than other fossil fuels,’’ he said.

He recalled that the Steering Committee, which was enlarged to include other stakeholders, was part of the dynamics of the MoU signed between the ECOWAS Commission, NNPC, and ONHYM on Sept. 15, 2022, in Rabat, Morocco.

He recalled that ECOWAS was engaged further to the instructions of the Heads of State and Government in the development of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Extension Project (WAGPEP), through a feasibility study approved in 2018.

He said at the same time, Nigeria and Morocco, through NNPC Ltd and ONHYM, also agreed to initiate the Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Project (NMGP).

“The similarities between the two projects soon became apparent, and so, the need for synergy to pool efforts in order to achieve a single gas pipeline project.

“Today, we can assure you that the ECOWAS member States are fully committed to this structuring Project.

“As proof, the statutory bodies of ECOWAS have ratified the decision to merge the projects into a single one,’’ he said.

The ECOWAS-ONHYM-NNPC Steering Committee meeting for the development of a single gas pipeline had representatives from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco.

  • IMF hails Tinubu as Naira records first closing gain

IMF hails Tinubu as Naira records first closing gain

The naira yesterday recorded its first closing gain of N39/$1 at the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window following  the Central Bank’s (CBN’s) unification of  exchange rates into the I&E window.

The naira, which closed at N702/$1 on Thursday came back strong yesterday, closing at N663/$1, a N39/$1 appreciation, according to data from FMDQ Group.

It was the first closing gain for the naira  since the rate unification policy took off on Wednesday.

The policy, which allows forex dealers and investors to buy and sell dollars at exchange rate of their choice provided they can find buyers, had pushed the local currency to over 15 years low before the ongoing recovery.

The new policy is part of the bold reforms promised by President Bola Tinubu.

Ranging from subsidy removal to some “housecleaning” at critical institutions to exchange rate unification, the market has responded positively.

The Nigerian equities market has outperformed its peers, gaining 13 per cent in the past two weeks

A major support for the unified exchange rate policy came from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Friday, which gave its backing to the exchange rate unification policy of the apex bank.

IMF thumps up  Tinubu’s  unification of exchange rates

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday expressed support for  the foreign exchange rates unification by  the Tinubu administration.

It pledged to  give the government the required  encouragement to ensure the success of the foreign exchange reforms.

The IMF, in a  terse statement in Abuja by  its Resident Representative in Nigeria, Ari Aisen, said  it “ greatly welcomes the authorities’ decision to introduce a unified market-reflective exchange rate regime in line with our long-standing recommendations.

“We stand ready to support the new administration in its implementation of FX reforms.”

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ,in a June 14,2023 circular by its Director, Director, Financial Markets, Dr. Angela Sere-Ejembi,abolished segmentation in the foreign exchange (FX) market and collapsed all rates into the Investors and Exporters (I&E).

In effect, buyers and sellers of foreign currency in the official FX market are now allowed to quote rates they find comfortable in the FX market.

President Bola Tinubu had said during his inauguration on May 29 that he would  unify Nigeria’s exchange rate.

  • Bawa’s suspension: Arewa, CSOs, AYCF commend Tinubu, seek EFCC’s overhaul

Bawa’s suspension: Arewa, CSOs, AYCF commend Tinubu, seek EFCC’s overhaul

Arewa Civil Society Organisation and Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF), have commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for suspending the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, while urging a complete overhaul of the Commission.

Chairman, Arewa Civil Society Organisation, Adamu Aminu Musa told journalists on Friday that the suspension and subsequent arrest of Bawa for alleged fraud and abuse of power was long overdue while urging Mr. President to carry out a thorough probe and holistic overhaul of the Commission to enable it to function effectively and efficiently carry out its anti-graft duties.

The suspension of Abdulrasheed Bawa is long overdue because Bawa has constantly and continuously abuse and misuse his powers and office, engaging in various corrupt practices. As EFCC Chairman, Bawa failed to comply with section 6 of the Establishment Act 2004 which empowers the EFCC to combat economic and financial crimes, thereby enabling the Commission to prevent, investigate, prosecute and penalize economic and financial crimes. Hence, suspending him is the first step towards making things right in the fight against corruption.

“Now that the President has listened to our earlier stance, we must commend him for taking this bold and righteous decision. Most of the grievances that made us take that stance are the reasons the DSS invited the suspended Chairman for questioning. They include charges of abuse of office, accused of selling dozens of petrol-bearing trucks confiscated from suspected looters, auctioning them off to his proxies at ridiculous prices while he was in charge of the Port Harcourt office of the EFCC and alleged violation of the code of conduct for public officers by owning properties beyond his legitimate income.”

“During Bawa’s tenure as the Chairman, the EFCC did not obey court orders, they give contrary orders that arm-twist the bank, running a lot of interferences in corruption investigations in order to stop cases against friends, allies, family, and anyone willing to play their dirty games, making money through plea bargain, with backing from his godfather and benefactor.”

National President of AYCF, Alhaji Yerima Shettima expressed appreciation “for the swift action taken by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of suspending the widely believed compromised Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa indefinitely, and ordering a thorough investigation of the activities of the agency under his watch. And extend the measure to include a total overhaul of the EFCC to flush out remnants of Abdulrasheed Bawa’s accomplices entrenched in top positions of the agency.

“The move by Mr. President is a reassurance of his government’s commitment to addressing the scepter of endemic, widespread, corruption and political avarice that characterised the eight-year tenure of the previous administration attributable to a lack of application of relevant laws against corrupt practices among officials of the regime and the apparent compromise of the EFCC under Abdulrasheed Bawa,” Shettima said.

“We categorically state that Bawa has been a huge disappointment for the young people of Nigeria who are supposed to be the natural claimants to the task of shaping the future of the Nigerian society. Bawa himself apart from his incompetent handling of the EFCC boss has also acquired massive assets in unexplained and suspicious circumstances that need to be investigated,” the group said.

Meanwhile, the group said it has faith, that in view of his upbringing and eminent legal background, the acting chairman of the EFCC, Abdulkarim Chukkol, will not disappoint the nation and will pursue the war against corruption with decency and decorum in accordance with the rule of law.

KadPoly alumni to Tinubu: Sign bill to end HND/BSc dichotomy

The Kaduna Polytechnic Alumni Association has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sign the bill aimed at eliminating the disparity between HND and BSc holders in Nigeria.

The Association said the issue has persisted for a significant period, underscoring the urgency for the president to approve the bill, as it has successfully passed through all stages in the National Assembly.

During a meeting with the newly elected executives of the Kaduna branch of the Alumni, the National President, Honourable Abba Anas Adamu, noted that previous attempts were made to engage the former Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu on the matter, saying that, “he had pledged assistance but unfortunately failed to follow through.”

He said given the new government in power, they remain hopeful that prompt action will be taken.

He said the association anticipates that President Tinubu will endorse the bill to eliminate HND/BSc dichotomy.

The National President emphasised that the primary concern of the alumni association is not the conversion of the Kaduna Polytechnic to a university, but rather the government’s permission for the institution to offer degree programmes alongside the existing HND and National Diploma programmes.

He noted that the Kaduna Polytechnic was already affiliated to reputable universities in the country, which qualifies it to offer degree programmes, but it should be allowed to offer degree programmes independent of any affiliation.

“It is worth mentioning that before the passage of the Bill by the 9th Assembly, the issue of eliminating the HND and BSc disparity sparked protests among affected individuals. Despite issuing circulars on the matter, the government is yet to take tangible measures to address the situation.”

The National President called upon all graduates of the institution to rally behind the polytechnic, emphasising that the institution requires their attention and support.
