21-year-old man rapes teenage relative, strangles her to death

Tragedy struck at Ette community in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State during the week as a 21-year-old man raped his 16-year-old relative and strangled her to death.

The 16-year-old girl identified as Faith Akuji, was said to have met her untimely death after the accused, Junior Augustine Akor, allegedly ambushed and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her in a nearby bush in the village.

Junior, who was arrested last Monday by vigilante operatives in the area and later detained by the state police command, was said to have confessed that he strangled Faith to death after raping her.

In a statement issued by the spokesman of the state police command, Daniel Ndukwe (DSP), the victim had gone missing in the late hours of June 8th, 2023, after her grandfather sent her to grind cassava in the community centre, with all efforts made to trace her whereabouts proving abortive.

Her decomposing body was, however, found in the bush at Mpole-Ubere in Ette community, following the arrest of the suspect, who confessed to having dragged the victim into the bush, forcefully had carnal knowledge of her, until she fainted and died in the process.

The victim’s remains, the police said, were found without any lower-body cloth, had since been evacuated to hospital and confirmed dead by doctors on duty.

Ndukwe disclosed that the case was undergoing further discreet investigation at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (SCID), from where the suspect would be arraigned in court upon conclusion of the investigation.

Consequently, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, while consoling the family and friends of the deceased, described the act as atrocious and unthinkable.

He, therefore, directed that the case be meticulously handled, concluded within record time and charged to court for justice to be dispensed accordingly.

  • How N200 billion was spent for census in nine years – NPC

How N200 billion was spent for census in nine years – NPC

    • …Says further delay in conducting 2023 census may cause loss of resources, data

The National Population Commission (NPC), on Friday explained that the N200 billion spent so far in preparation for  the national population and housing census was between 2014 and 2023.

The NPC was reacting to narratives by some media outlets (not The Nation) that the commission had squandered N200 billion in just one year (2023).

Recall that in May, the Chairman of the NPC, Nasir Isa-Kwarra, in a meeting with media executives in Abuja, announced that N200 billion had been spent on the conduct of the census.

However, the NPC at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, said it was true that N200 billion had been spent on census but that the money expended was between 2014 and 2023.

The Director Public Affairs, NPC, Dr Isiaka Yahaya, while briefing reporters said part of the N200 billion was expended before the coming of the present commission, which was inaugurated twice between 2018 and 2020 and even before the inception of the Buhari-led administration.

This was as he urged the Nigerian media to be objective in their reports and join hands with the commission in disseminating correct information.

He also assured the citizens of the commission’s loyalty in delivering to them  a credible national census devoid of errors and corrupt practices.

Yahaya said: “It has become necessary to set the records straight and put into proper context the expenditure of 200 Billion Naira by the National Population Commission in preparation for the 2023 Census. Consistent with global practice and inspired by an unswerving commitment to positively rewrite the history of census in Nigeria, the commission opted to conduct a digital census deploying technology on a massive scale.

“In a country struggling with acute infrastructural deficit, this massive undertaking cannot come cheap but at a huge cost. Yes, it is true that N200 billion has been spent on preparations for the 2023 Census so far. However, this fund was not expended in the last few weeks, months or years but rather since 2014 when preparations for the 2023 Census actually began.

“Indeed, part of the N200 billion was expended before the coming of the present Commission, which was inaugurated twice between 2018 and 2020 and even before the inception of the Buhari administration.

“Even before the conduct of the census, the outcome of the preparatory activities is already yielding dividends that are far in excess of the N200 billion spent so far. The Commission generated the largest volume of geospatial data from the EAD in which every building in Nigeria has been captured and geo-referenced.

“The monetary value of this data alone runs into trillions of Naira. This has also provided Enumeration Area frames that can be used for future censuses and surveys. Through the recruitment exercise for the census, the Commission has generated a data base of young persons who applied for the census jobs with information on their names, ages, qualifications, addresses, phone numbers and account numbers. These are valuable information that can be used for youth empowerment programmes and other social welfare programmes.

“The skewed media narratives behind the N200 billion expended in preparation for the forthcoming census is an attempt to divert national attention from the great work the Commission has done and is doing to deliver a world-class census data for development planning.

“The items for which the sum of N200 billion was expended are available, verifiable and remain useful for the next census anytime it is to be conducted. The scope and quality of arrangements put in place will not only be useful for the next census but also makes future censuses less expensive. The Commission wishes to assure Nigerians and indeed development partners of its irrevocable commitment and competence to deliver credible, reliable and acceptable census data.

“I wish to state unequivocally that the Commission has nothing to hide as regards the preparatory activities for the Census. The implementation of the Census project is being carried out in a professional and transparent manner; therefore, the Commission is open to inquiry and is ready to offer clarification if the need arises.

“Let me use this opportunity to appeal to the Nigerian media who are our strategic partners to join hands with the Commission in realizing the dream of providing the needed demographic data that will facilitate and place our country on the pedestal of sustainable development.

“Our expectation is that you will continue to report the 2023 Census truthfully and professionally in order to positively sensitize the general populace for a successful and fulfilling national assignment “.

Meanwhile, the NPC  has warned that any further the delay in the conduct of the  census could lead to loss of resources and erode preparations already made before the postponement of the exercise.

The NPC Federal Commissioner in Ekiti State, Hon. Ayodeji Ajayi said if the census was not carried out  within the shortest possible time, information that had been gathered would become stale.

Ajayi who stated this in Ado Ekiti during a parley with media executives, said the commission had made some significant progress in its preparation towards the conduct of the exercise.

He listed activities already carried out by the NPC to include the demarcation of the enumeration areas, the conduct of first and second pre-tests, recruitment and training of ad hoc workers, procurement of Personal Digital Assistants amongst other equipment.

Ajayi said that the conduct of the census should be hastened so that preparatory activities, information gathered as well as the money already spent before it was postponed would not be a waste.

The NPC federal commissioner  noted that since the census had been planned already, the best option was to proceed with the exercise in view of the huge financial resources that have been spent so far on the project.

He added that over N140billion had been expended on procurement of technology and equipment preparatory to conduct a hitch-free first digital population census in the country.

“The census must be held within the shortest time possible. We have gathered information across the country. If we don’t use them within the next 12 months, they will become stale. We conducted Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) three years ago and by the time we start afresh, we had to go back to redo the EAD because so many people have migrated and so many houses have been built.

“We don’t want to start all over again. However, we cannot shy away from it if the Federal Government says so. But because of the huge finances that have been committed to this exercise, the best thing for us is to move forward and deliver the census.

“Actually, this government will need the data that we are going to produce for them to plan for this country, whether at national or sub-national level. So, the best thing is to march forward, hoping that the Federal Government will make the proclamation.

Court orders SSS to grant Emefiele access to family, lawyers

Justice Hamza Muazu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, yesterday  ordered the Director General of the Department of the State Security Services (SSS) and the agency to grant the  suspended Governor of the Central Bank (CBN), Godwin Emefiele unhindered access to his lawyers and family members.

The order was sequel to an oral application by Emefiele’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN) with Michael Aondoakaa (SAN) in suit FCT/HC/CV/6450/23.

The judge said: “The lawyers of the applicant shall have access to the applicant immediately and regularly at reasonable time, pending the determination of the application.”

Listed as respondents in the fundamental rights application are the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the Director General of SSS and the SSS.

Daudu told the court that he had written letters to the respondents particularly on June 14, 2023, for the purpose of taking further instruction from Emefiele but  the SSS refused to respond.

Counsel to the SSS and its DG, I. Awo said his clients do not usually refuse such a request, as  it is wrong to do so.

Awo assured the court that his clients would abide  by its  order by  granting  access to the listed lawyers and family members of Mr. Emefiele to see him.

Counsel to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation did not oppose the application.

The respondents, however, requested extension of time to file their  responses to the suit.

The request was also granted and the matter was adjourned to June 20,  2023 for the hearing of the substantive suit.

Emefiele was arrested by the agency last Saturday,24 hours after his suspension by President Bola Tinubu  on account of ” ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.”

Having 12 children calling from God – Nick Cannon

American TV host and actor, Nick Cannon has said giving birth to his dozen of kids was purely a calling from God.

While appearing on a new episode of Dr. Laura Berman’s, “The Language of Love podcast”, the rapper disclosed the plausibility of having more kids.

After Berman sakd that the entertainer had ‘magic sperm’, claiming most of the women were “on full on birth control and gotten pregnant,” Nick retorted, “I lend that type of stuff to God. They truly are miracles.”

Both Cannon and Berman made light of the similarities between his experience and that of the Biblical Abraham.

The 42-year-old ‘Wild ‘N Out’ host also revealed he was open to having more kids, noting, “The more the merrier!”

At one point Berman inquired, “Did God tell you to have all these babies?”

But Nick explained he’d gotten into trouble for saying that before and shared that when people would ask him if he was done having children, his response would simply be, “Only God can let me know when I’m done.”

“As much as I was open to every single child that I have, I can’t say the majority of them were planned,’ he went on.

“If you would have told me in 2012 when I was still married and just diagnosed with Lupus that 10 years from now… that I would have 12 children, I would be like f^ck out of here! There’s no way in the world that I would ever plan that”, he added.

Nick has children with six women including, pop superstar Mariah Carey, DJ Abby De La Rosa, and four models: Alyssa Scott, Brittany Bell, Bre Tiesi, and Lanisha Cole.

He shares 12-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with Carey, a 6-year-old son Golden, a 2-year-old daughter Powerful Queen, and a 7-month-old son Rise Messiah with Bell.

  • LP to call 36 witnesses to testify against Mbah over alleged certificate forgery

LP to call 36 witnesses to testify against Mbah over alleged certificate forgery

The Labour Party in Enugu State says it will call 36 witnesses to testify against Mr Peter Mbah of the People Democratic Party (PDP) at the Governorship Election Tribunal over alleged certificate forgery.

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal is hearing the petition filed by Edeoga of the Labour Party against Peter Mbah of the PDP.

Edoga is praying the tribunal to disqualify Mba over the alleged NYSC certificate forgery.

Speaking to the tribunal on Thursday in Enugu, Mr M. J. Numa, counsel to Mr Chijioke Edeoga said that they intended calling 28 witnesses in a whole within their control and eight subpoenaed witnesses.

Numa said that they would require a period of five weeks to call the witnesses and had agreed that the witnesses within their control would need 15 minutes for cross examination.

He added that they had taken care of the interpreter as they would schedule for the process prepared.

Responding, counsel to Mbah and the PDP, Mr Wole Olanikpekun and Mr Tochukwu Maduka respectively, on the ground that the FCT High Court had resolved the issue of alleged certificate forgery as there was a leave of appeal and that section 177 and 182 of the constitution had settled the matter.

Numa said that there was no record of any appeal on such subject matter, adding that the court could not speculate the existence of an appeal.

He said that the tribunal had the competent jurisdiction for the matter and pleaded the court indulgence to strike out the objection.

“177 and 182 of the constitution are mutually exclusive, 182 has elaboration than 177, so they are two separate provision that stand on their own. I, therefore invite your Lordship to decline those invitations,” he said.

The counsel to Mbah,  Olanikpekun said that they would be calling 44 witnesses, adding that they required 25 days to call all their witnesses and 15 minutes for cross examination.

He said that the petition on the ground that the second respondent was not qualified due to alleged certificate forgery was not a petition before the tribunal, noting that the tribunal had no jurisdiction over the matter.

Also, counsel to the PDP, Maduka stressed that there was leave of application on the alleged certificate forgery.

He added that the tribunal was not to determine whether the FCT High Court has jurisdiction or not.

He said that the PDP intended to bring 54 witnesses which would include subpoenaed witnesses and forensic experts.

The Chairman of the tribunal, Justice K. M Akano, said that rulling on the alleged forgery would be delivered alongside the judgement.

The chairman however, adjourned the case to June 22 for continuation of hearing.

  • Group hails Tinubu for appointing young advisers

Group hails Tinubu for appointing young advisers

A group, Southwest Professional Youths Network, has commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing three young people as his advisers recently.

President Tinubu appointed eight advisers on Thursday, June 15, 2023.

Among the new appointees are Olu Verheijen, 46, Zacchaeus Adedeji, 45, and John Uwajumogu, who is 46.

Verheijen, who will serve as Tinubu’s adviser on the energy sector, has nearly 20 years of experience in sub-Saharan Africa’s oil, gas, power, and renewable energy sectors.

Adedeji is a skilled accountant and expert in corporate tax and public finance development with over 15 years of experience who has worked in corporate accounting, public service administration and provided advisory services to multinationals and governments.

Uwajumogu has over 20 years of advisory experience, primarily in the energy industry, with significant experience working in the energy markets in Houston, Texas, and Calgary, Alberta.

In a statement sent to journalists on Saturday, the convener of the Southwest group, Comrade Seun Adeaanu, urged President Tinubu to sustain the momentum of appointing young people into office.

Comrade Adeaanu also advised the president to retain the young people inherited from former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

He said: ”Nigeria has a significant youth population, and appointing younger people in government can help ensure their perspectives and interests are adequately represented.

”Younger individuals are often more familiar with technology and digital tools. In a rapidly evolving world, this proficiency can be advantageous in implementing efficient governance processes, leveraging digital solutions, and addressing emerging challenges.

”Young people also bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table. They approach problem-solving in new and creative ways, which can lead to novel solutions for the complex challenges Nigeria faces.

”We have seen this already in the previous administration with excellent young appointees like Ahmad Salihijo Ahmad of the Rural Electrification Agency and Inuwa Kashifu Abdullahi of the National Information Technology Development Agency.

”Since coming on board, it has been a tale of success stories at the REA and NITDA, where they hold sway.

”These youthful CEOs should be given all the required support and encouragement to succeed. We call on the president to retain them and appoint more of their ilks.

”The group, however, clarified that it is not against the appointment of older Nigerians but insisted that the government prioritise younger people.

”Youths are ready for leadership, and Ahmad Salihijo and Kashifu Abdullahii have demonstrated renewed hope for young people in Nigeria,” Comrade Adeaan added.
