Nigeria call-up was like a joke, says Nwachukwu

Divine Nwachukwu admits no-one was more surprised than him at receiving a maiden call-up to the Nigeria squad for their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sierra Leone on Sunday.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder was one of four home-based players included in Jose Peseiro’s 23-man roster as reward for his fine performances in the colours of Bendel Insurance.

Nwachukwu contributed one goal and five assists to help the Vipers finish top of Group A at the end of the regular season and scored three times during the Nigeria Professional Football League playoffs to catch the eye of Peseiro.

The youngster represented his country at the Under-17 level, but revealed his journey since then has been a struggle and expressed pride at getting the nod by the Super Eagles head coach.

“I feel amazing, what can I say? I am more than happy right now. When I got the text, I thought it was a joke,” he said of the invitation to join the senior national team.

“I feel very amazing and I feel proud of myself and what I have done. It has been one rough journey for me. I have been in the U20, U23 [squads] but in the end, I got kicked out.

“To play for Bendel Insurance at my age and to do what I have done is amazing and at least I got a reward. The coach saw me and picked me. It is a plus for me and I am very happy for that.”

Peseiro’s side suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in March, although they got their revenge in the home leg three days later by beating the Djurtus by the scoreline.

The West Africans are two points clear at the top of Group A and will book their passage to the showpiece in Cote d’Ivoire  next year with victory over the Leone Stars in Monrovia.

  • Can Tinubu deliver Nigeria from poverty and iniquity?

Can Tinubu deliver Nigeria from poverty and iniquity?

    • By Braeyi Ekiye

Late Justice Oputa Chukwudifu, a jurist of character and learning was known for his straight shots with words, and with the tenacity for passing good and enduring judgments. While delivering the 2nd Chief Dr. Alabo Graham-Douglas Memorial lecture at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Port Harcourt in late July 1990, the eminent jurist said that poverty offers the greatest assault on and violence to human dignity.

The Justice was right in his assessment of poverty and under-development as Siamese twins or twin-gods that breed slavery, class and negate balance, growth and development of a nation.

In his Christmas message to Nigerians on December 25, 2022, Matthew Kukah, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto said that the immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari’s policies made Nigerians vulnerable, faulting his anti-corruption credentials.

“It is sad”, he said, “that despite your lofty promises, you are leaving us far more vulnerable than when you came, that the corruption we thought would be fought has become a leviathan and sadly, a consequence of government marked by nepotism.”

“Clearly, in almost every department and with all indicators, our nation has become a tale of two cities”, he bemoaned.

Bishop Kukah regretted that the nation now witnessed wars between the rich and the poor, man and woman, across generations, along party lines, social classes, religion and ethnicity and so on.

Earlier in April 2022, Bishop Kukah had, in an Arise TV Morning Show, had declared that: “Buhari has done a terrible job as president of Nigeria”.

The facts attest to the acute observations of the revered Bishop on the performance bond of the eight-year rule of Buhari’s administration to the Nigerian nation. To most observers that administration was a colossal failure.

Regrettably, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, our new president, who has shown an appreciable level of audacity in dishing out directives, and understanding of the utility value of leadership in governance within a short space of his administration, is now saddled with the unbundling of the liabilities of the previous government.

First, was the fuel subsidy removal by his administration which has left Nigerian people poorer, helpless and totally desperate in making ends meet.

Said Tinubu on this: “It is one decision we must bear to save our country from going under and take our resources away from the stranglehold of a few unpatriotic elements”. This ostensibly is to assuage the fears of greater majority of Nigerians that Tinubu has come to rob Peter to pay Paul.

Of course, senior lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, and human right activist, had in a publication titled: ‘Catalogue of Looting and Brigandage of Nigeria’, stated that subsidies are primarily of the rich, highlighting how the subsidy regime is being manipulated and how huge sums of money, he believes, can be recovered not just to subsidize fuel but also provide funds for development.

He revealed among other anti-people policies of government, the diversion of N40billion from Federation Account; additional revenue of $1.5 billion payment to Federation Account as part of 15-year fiscal incentives given to the oil companies operating under the Deep Offshore and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act which expired in June 2014; outstanding royalty payments of $63 billion, federal government’s denied revenue of $500million by a group of corrupt public officers, sale of public assets and enterprises, whose buyers turned round to engage in asset stripping, the non-recovery of deposits and the accrued interests of $7billion fixed in 14 banks, theft of crude oil, sale of some banks by CBN and the unaccountable trillions of naira spent to revitalize these banks, theft of gold and other minerals amongst others.

Meanwhile, some ex-ministers in Buhari’s administration have been summoned to EFCC on matters of transparency and accountability during their tenures in office.

Currently, the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele is undergoing investigations as part of an “ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the banking sector”.

The list of corruption cases perpetrated by some officials of the immediate past administration is endless. A Tinubu administration is expected to clinically x-ray and investigate these financial and economic crimes against the Nigerian state and her people and bring to book those culpable to serve as a deterrent to future wanton rape of the treasury.

From the foregoing and many other disturbing revelations, the Tinubu administration, no doubt, has an arduous task in reconstructing the Nigerian governance system in tandem with equity, accountability, performance bond and the rule of law.

Fortunately, President Tinubu, in his June 12 Democracy Day nationwide address said that the democracy MKO Abiola died for is one that promotes the ‘welfare of the people over the personal interests of the ruling class and one where the governed can find personal fulfilment and happiness.

That, he said, is the hope MKO Abiola ignited throughout Nigeria in 1993.

He declared: “We shall be faithful to the truth, faithful to equity and faithful to justice. We shall exercise our authority and mandate to govern with fairness, respect for the rule of law, and commitment to always uphold the dignity of all our people”.

We recall that President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi recently sacked his Labour Minister, Ken Kandodo over misuse of COVID-19 funds amounting to 6.3billion Malawian Kwacha (7.95million dollars). This is even after the minister had repaid the money to government coffers.

Incensed President Chakwera further said that over a dozen individuals suspected of committing the crimes exposed by the audit report have been arrested.

He declared: “If the finger of evidence points to you… you are going to prison”, he assured. Nigerians expect such stern measures in the Tinubu administration.

The task before President Tinubu therefore, is to show strength of leadership character by doing what is right and proper in the interest of the country, by facing head-on, these challenges that have held the nation bound since her independence in 1960.

Here, Justice Oputa’s words should ring a resounding bell: “Poverty and under-development breed slavery, class and negate the balanced growth and development of a nation”.

May I say that the challenge of tackling this hydra-headed monster that is corruption is the litmus test of the Tinubu administration. Nigerians yearn for good governance which revolves around visionary, enlightened and audacious leadership, selfless in its calling and with zero tolerance for cutting corners to spite the face of the great Nigerian state.

  • Emefiele’s Cross

    Emefiele’s Cross

By the time President Bola Tinubu assumed office on May 29, the cup of Godwin Emefiele, the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), as he then was, was full. Emefiele knew that he was marking time in office after Tinubu’s inauguration. Many Nigerians would have preferred that the President fired him immediately on coming to office.

Just ask around, they would have given one million and one reasons why that should have been the President’s first action in office. But things do not work that way. As a connoisseur of power, Tinubu is not new to taking hard decisions. He, however, knew that in Emefiele’s case, he must bide his time to avoid allegations of political chicanery.

Why should politics come into play in a matter like this? Those who do not know some of the things Emefiele did in the run up to the last elections may ask. He virtually abandoned his job for the presidential contest which Tinubu eventually won on February 25. He had his legs in politics and central banking as he stood astride both fields, while implementing harsh monetary policies which gave the citizenry pains.

Emefiele was unbothered. For all he cared, the people could either take those bitter pills or die. There was no other option. His foreign exchange (forex), money redesign policies and the Anchor Borrowers Programme (ABP), to mention just a few, were tailored to cause pain and whenever people asked for relief, none came. His stock response was that Nigerians should continue to bear their pains, while he tightened the screws.

None other than the naira redesign policy showed the poor thinking of the suspended central banker. Introduced on the eve of the last elections, Emefiele believed that it would stop vote-buying. The policy was not thougnt through at all. It was aimed at stalling the ambition of a  particular candidate, who he and his ilk believed would rely on money to buy vote. The gullible public and surprisingly too, a section of the media, were hoodwinked. With the benefit of hindsight, Tinubu was primed to win, with or without money, because of his strategic planning. . How do you redesign a nation’s currency in three months and on the eve of general elections, without considering the globally approved percentage of the proportion of the money in circulation to the gross domestic product (GDP), the economic upheaval it would cause and its effects on the spending power of the people, especially the poor? Emefiele had a good policy, but his planned hasty implementation spoiled eveything.

Despite experts’ advice,  Emefiele was set in his ways. He had his own agenda, which could only be executed the way he wanted! With immediate past President Muhammadu Buhari on his side, he carried on as if there is no tomorrow. Then came the Pharaoh who does not know Joseph. Yet, he did not change his ways; he carried on as if it is still business as usual. After the President spoke of a uniform foreign exchange rate, Emefiele’s CBN reportedly hastily sold dollar at N631 as against N461.6 at which buyers applied.

This was what businesses went through under the Emefiele-led CBN for nine years. Then to compound things, he dabbled into politics. That was the last straw which broke the camel’s back. Buyers who insisted on getting forex at the official N461.6 rate waited until, as they say, “thy Kingdom come”.    Many were, therefore, forced to source for forex at the black market and related places at a higher rate to keep their businesses going. Emefiele overreached himself by countermanding the President. Even though the story was denied, the paper insisted on its veracity. So, the suspension of Emefiele on Friday was seen coming by the discerning. The man had bitten more than he could chew.

Emefiele’s suspension was bound to generate heat.  as it is doing now. There were those who predicted the fate that befell him like renowned writer, Prof Niyi Akinnaso. Two days before Emefiele’s suspension, Akinnaso noted that the aforementioned story “rekindled the call for Emefiele’s resignation or termination as the action recalls his failed cash swap policy, not to speak of his failed bid at running for President against the CBN Act, which emphasises the independence of the Central Bank from partisan politics”

The comments have been divergent. Of course, we cannot all agree on Emefiele’s suspension and arrest by the Department of State Service (DSS). What we should be talking about now is that the DSS should hasten up its investigation and charge him to court, if necessary. If it needs to work with sister agencies to achieve results, DSS should not hesitate to do so. What it should not do is to keep Emefiele in custody indefinitely. The law frowns at this and lawyers, who have sniffed money, are already hovering around, seeking to have a bite at the juicy brief they can see ahead. For many of them, it is always about money!

Emefiele may not have been a great CBN governor, but his rights must be protected as the state seeks to get him to answer for his deeds while in office. He has to tell us what informed the multiple foreign exchange rates, naira redesign (or is it cash swap?) and ABP. These are some of his Cross and he must bear them the way he made Nigerians to carry theirs in the face of his excruciating monetary policies.

Real Madrid completes Bellingham signing from Dortmund

Real Madrid have announced the signing of Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund – with the England midfielder agreeing a six-year contract at the Bernabeu.

The 19-year-old moved to Germany from boyhood club Birmingham City in 2020 but has long dreamt of playing for the La Liga giants.

Dortmund confirmed in a statement last week that Real have agreed to pay an initial €103m (£88.5m) to land Bellingham. Now Real have confirmed the deal is complete.

“Real Madrid CF and Borussia Dortmund have agreed on the transfer of the player Jude Bellingham, who will remain linked to our club for the next six seasons,” their statement read. “Tomorrow, Thursday, June 15, at 12:00 noon at Real Madrid City, the presentation ceremony for Jude Bellingham as a new Real Madrid player will take place.

“After, Jude Bellingham will appear before the media.”

He scored his first England goal in their World Cup win over Iran but is absent from the squad to face Malta and North Macedonia in Euro 2024 qualifiers this week due to injury.

He has long been keen on a move to the 14-time European champions and recently said that he sees the Champions League as “the biggest stage”.

“The goal has always been winning,” he said last month. “When you ask me what my biggest ambitions are in the game, it’s to win everything. And I’m not afraid to say that.

“Everyone should have that goal I feel like as professional footballers.”

Bellingham was recently named Bundesliga Player of the Season after his starring role for Dortmund, who missed out on the title in agonising fashion on the final day of the campaign.

FIFA SG Samoura to depart after seven years

FIFA secretary general Fatma Samoura is leaving after seven years as the highest profile woman working in world soccer, the football governing body has said.

Samoura will stay in the job she has held since 2016 through this year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand and leave at the end of the year, FIFA said.

“FIFA today is a better governed, more open, more reliable and more transparent organisation. I will leave FIFA with a high sense of pride and fulfilment,” Samoura said in a statement.

“I had intended to share my news first with the FIFA Council members next week, but I am aware there has been growing speculation about my position in recent months.

“For now, I am fully focused on the preparation and delivery of the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.”

The 60-year-old former United Nations official from Senegal was an unexpected hire seven years ago soon after the election of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president.

She became the first woman, first Black person, first Muslim and first non-European to be FIFA’s top administrator.

However, Infantino’s hands-on style as an executive president has meant Samoura has often struggled to establish a clearly defined public role in the $2 million-a-year job.

“Fatma was the first woman, and the first African, to be appointed to such an important position at FIFA,” Infantino said.

“We respect Fatma’s decision and I would like to thank her for such dedication and commitment to football.”

Samoura’s time in FIFA included helping oversee men’s World Cups played in Russia and Qatar, and awarding the 2026 edition that will be played in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

She also oversaw the restructuring of FIFA which included appointing two deputy secretary generals and creating a new women’s football division.

A former President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi has praised the vision and direction of the current Ibrahim Musa Gusau-led NFF administration, saying the sincerity of its approach to issues and unambiguous intention to develop the game from the grassroots will culminate in steady growth of the Nigeria game.

Speaking during a visit to the NFF Secretariat, Abuja on Wednesday – the first since he left office in 2010 – the Omachi Attah of Igalaland described the present NFF team as “experienced, diligent and committed,” and expressed confidence that it will succeed with its focus on grassroots development and inclusivity in administration.

“I feel honoured to be here. This is my first time in the NFF, sitting happily with a sitting NFF President, since I left office. I am happy about the path you have chosen, about the fact that you’re a bridge-builder and about your honest intentions in taking Nigeria Football to new heights.

“I am happy doing what I am doing. I thank God for the little I was able to do with my team while we were. It was so many years ago but I still feel the passion because I never really left,” said Lulu, whose FOSLA Secondary School is the reigning champion of the National Principals’ Cup competition.

Earlier, President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau praised the passion and energy of the former NFF supremo while in office, and commended the fact that he has continued to work with the same passion in producing excellent individuals through his football academy that nicely blends football with education.

“You are one man we all respect so much because football is the centre of your existence. Even after leaving office as NFF President, you have remained in the game and your school continues to churn out good products for our football teams,” he said.

“What you are doing is invaluable and it is making a real impact because very few people are providing the opportunity for our young men to blend their urge for education with their passion for football.”

Meanwhile, Gusau disclosed that the NFF is working in synergy with the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Federal Ministry of Education, as well as the Nigeria School Sports Federation, to produce Nigeria’s representatives for subsequent editions of the African Secondary Schools Football Competition.

FOSLA, as the country’s champion school, has been invited to participate in this year’s International School Sports Federation competition taking place in Morocco next month.

The Chairman of City Football Club of Abuja, Chidi Okonkwo, has said his team will not be under any pressure when they face Lobi Stars of Makurdi in the Naija Super 8 play-offs.

Both North-Central teams are set to lock horns in the opening fixture of the play-offs at the Eket Township Stadium on 23 June. The winner of the match will represent the zone in the main Naija Super 8 tournament, set to hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, between July 7 and 16

Okonkwo said his team deserves to be in the play-offs and the boys will not be intimidated when they take on Lobi Stars.

“I think every team in this Super 8 play-offs deserves to be there. For City FC to be there from NNL means we are a big team too. We just missed promotion last season by one point and we were top of the league for a long time before we lost the promotion ticket to El Kanemi Warriors.

“So what I’m looking for in the tournament is for the boys to have fun. It is not a tournament they have to put themselves under pressure but just to have fun. They should also use the tournament to showcase themselves,” Okonkwo said.
