Our agenda for new president, by clerics, others

As President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumes office, Adeola Ogunlade spoke to some church leaders on their expectations from the new president, especially in the area of economy and insecurity.

Follow through on your manifesto -OAIC President Akinadewo

The President, Organisation of African Instituted Churches (OAIC)/Prelate, Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Worldwide (MCCSW), Elder Israel Akinadewo has joined others in congratulating Nigeria’s president.

He assured that Tinubu would not disappoint Nigerians.

According to him, “My assertion on this also comes from his pedigree in leadership, for identifying and training men and women of high repute and giving them roles for effective transformation.

“He did it in Lagos and I also believe that his experience during the electioneering period will serve as motivation towards success and for him to avoid complacency that pervades African leadership.”

He advised Tinubu to focus on the manifestos that he campaigned with. “I studied it critically, and I could see sincerity from that document. Be that as it may, he needs to take the appropriate steps to improve the economic situation of the country. People are really suffering and mostly affected are the micro, small and medium enterprises.”

Akinadewo pointed out that the new government should dwell more on security, adding that there was a need for an intentional and more decisive approach to address insecurity across the nation.

“I should expect him to eradicate these constant strikes in our tertiary institutions. Lagos State higher institutions are good templates that could be adopted nationally. He did for Lagos State and I believe he should bring that success to the national level. As he said immediately after his declaration in the general elections of his plan to give education loans to students, he should keep to this promise. If done, I believe it will stabilise the academic calendars of our institutions. There should also be a tremendous improvement in the general welfare of academics.”

He said Tinubu should replicate what he did as the Lagos State, by creating avenues to improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) for the country. “This could be from the angle of exploring more sectors like mining, looking in the way of bitumen and more focus on agriculture. He should, however, be careful so as not to overburden the citizens and struggling businesses on double taxation.”

The cleric posited that the country is so divided, especially along ethnicity and religion, he advised that appropriate steps should be taken to ensure that these gaps being explored by the enemies of the country are bridged. “I also expect him to bring more awareness to the National Orientation Agency of Nigeria. We need reorientation, especially the youths of this country. People need to know that Nigeria is our country and we must do everything possible to defend her. We must change the negative way that we think about our country.

“Having said that,  I expect a government that will bring together all Nigerians, irrespective of party affiliations, ethnic and religious leanings. Just as he said some time ago, he should bring together a government of national competence.”

Akinadewo stressed the need to reduce the cost of governance because the national assembly members should not be remunerated on the criteria of meetings held.

“The new president should also do everything to discourage our professionals from leaving this country. This cannot be done through coercion, but by instituting good policies. Nigeria loses millions of dollars through the ‘japa’ mindset and this has reached a pandemic level. This is one of the things which put intense pressure on the naira, including our reliance more on importation than exportation to other nations. It was said in 2022 that Nigeria contributed £1.9bn to the economy of the UK, from our students that went to study in just one year. This was primarily a result of the unpredictable nature of our academic calendars as well as the high level of unemployment”.

“The health sector should also be critically evaluated. Medical officers should be well remunerated and they should bring more innovative ideas to the sector to make our hospitals world-class. This, if done, will reduce our going abroad for medical purposes,” he said.

    Revamp the economy-Lagos CAN Chairman

The Lagos State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN), Bishop Stephen Adegbite , also called on the President to focus on revamping Nigeria’s ailing economy and blocking all the holes existing in governance.

Adegbite said this in an interview with The Nation, saying that the new government must make frantic efforts at revamping our economy and blocking all the holes existing in governance. “There must be a genuine intention to tackle corruption headlong so that we can have a better environment safe for Nigerians and would-be investors,” Adegbite said.

He noted that though Nigerians must recognise that there is an economic meltdown in the world, what is being witnessed is not only peculiar to Nigeria, notwithstanding, however, the incoming president should ensure that there is an enviable environment that is conducive enough for people to come and invest. “We must also go back to the days when we exported our things. We should not be a consuming economy, if we don’t have things we export, there is no way that the economy will improve.”

On security, Adegbite said that providing security for all Nigerians should be the number one priority of the new administration and we must reduce the incidences of insurgency to the barest minimum.

According to the cleric, what all Nigerians want is the total eradication of the insurgency in Nigeria. Insecurity has stayed for a long time, adding that it will take time to get them out of their hiding place, but we must be sincere in getting them out.

“We must redesign the military apparatus so that they can do their job professionally. Nigeria’s military cannot say that they can’t defeat Boko Haram. The same Nigerian military fought in other countries like Liberia, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone. They can deliver in Nigeria and God will help them.”

He posited further that everyone must play their part; the government alone cannot do it.

He enjoined citizens to give intelligence reports to the military personnel.

He saluted the courage of our fallen heroes and prayed that God would be with the families they left behind. “God will continue to bless our nation and take Nigeria to the promised land, “he said.

Democratize economic opportunities for Nigeria – Fubara-Manuel

The Former President of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), Bishop Benebo Fubara-Manuel has called on the President Tinubu to bring Nigeria together and democratize economic opportunities for all Nigerians.

Fubara-Manuel said that the last election had divided Nigerians across ethnic and religious lines and the incoming President must make it a duty to bring the country together so that he can succeed.

“These dissenting voices between Christians and Muslims should be looked into.  He should erase the obnoxious belief that religion makes a good President. We want to see him as a sincere man who loves Nigerians whether they are Christians or Muslims.”

He added that there was no way that life would move in this country if the economy stagnated. “He has to bring the trust of international communities to come and invest in Nigeria so that the economy will flow. He has to break the power of monopoly in our country.

“I want to state that the newly built refinery by Dangote is a good venture and worth celebrating, it is a good thing but how will the country operate without any functional refinery? With only one person having a functional refinery, how are we going to survive?” the cleric asked.

He appealed to the new President to do everything he can to make sure that the refineries are working, adding that the idea of selling crude and importing PMS, Diesel, and Kerosine should stop.

Fubara-Manuel asked the President to explore the ingenuity in Rivers, Delta that has led to oil bunkering. “These people produce enough good diesel that will be used to run generators even when they are not pure enough.

“How are they doing these and how can the knowledge be used to create an industry for the Rivers and Delta people is key. This blanket condemnation, including myself, because I will never support illegal bunkering, can be turned into ingenuous renewal in these two states.

“Illegal oil bunkering is wrong and is not fair for the environment. But how do we put it into the proper industry so that they don’t continue to destroy our waterways? Oil and gas are important to me as it remains the mainstay of our economy in Nigeria. Our farmlands are being destroyed, our people cannot fish nor can they farm again,” he said.

He pointed out that the relationship between the economy and national security has become increasingly interlinked.

“Let us bring back the economy, and then Nigeria will be secure. We need to clean the old players who are so corrupt, let us try new and better hands.”

Make security, unity your priority – Osa Oni

The South West Chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, (PFN), and Presiding Prelate of Vineyard Christian Ministries, Archbishop John Osa-Oni, said that the new government would do well with the prayers and support of all Nigerians, saying that the new President must do everything possible to unite Nigeria.

“We believe that he will do well, with all our prayers and support. We believe that if he could do what he did in Lagos with meagre resources and even with Obasanjo denying him financial allocation and now with more resources available, I believe that he will do well”.

Osa Oni reiterated the need for prayers for the new government. “The Bible says that we should pray for those in positions of authority so that they lead us peacefully. It is not our making and until the court says otherwise.

“Number one thing that the government should look into is security, no nation strives with insecurity. It is a major key. If he can handle it, we will have a booming nation. No one wants to invest their money in an insecure nation.

While acknowledging that Nigeria’s economy is facing challenges, the cleric is optimistic that it will bounce back on the stream of the global trend.

“One major area he needs to focus on is security and he needs to focus on uniting Nigeria. No country strives when one or two regions are aggrieved. He must bind everybody together. I am aware that Tinubu will constitute a unity government. He will bring some unexpected people to power, and appoint them as ministers. I believe that that will heal the nation,” he said.

Adhere to your covenant with the people – CYM tells Tinubu

A youth-led organisation for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the APC, The Christian Youths Movement, has called on the President-elect to ensure a proper reward mechanism as he plans to form his government.

The group in a statement signed by its National Convener Comrade Adeleke Olorunwa and Mr Odiari Arinze Jude said that it was important to point Asiwaju’s attention to the enormous contributions of Nigerians collectively and individually towards attaining electoral victory.

The youth population regardless of some who held different views of the situation gave overwhelming support to the APC Tinubu/Shettima ticket with the hope that Nigeria’s Hope will be genuinely Renewed.

The group went further to remind Asiwaju of his manifestos and charged him to please make real his campaign programmes and covenant with Nigerians. This they say would make them proud of their effort and support as they carry their shoulders high.

“We are proud of the efforts of our members across Nigeria, commitment and dedication to the Tinubu/Shettima struggle. It is indeed a delight that we backed a ticket that was sellable and eventually victorious despite the odds. May we all live to enjoy a new and advanced Nigeria under Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as President,” the group said.

While appreciating the supports gotten from notable individuals who aided the campaign activities, including the former former Governor of Benue State and  Minister of Special Duties Senator George Akume; Jigawa State Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar;  and Chief of Staff to Lagos State Governor, Mr Tayo Ayinde.

We hereby call on Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adequately compensate the trio for their capacity, loyalty and dedication to the course. It is equally important to remind the President of his enormous youthful inclusion into his administration.

  • Consumers groan amidst price increase fueled by subsidy removal

Consumers groan amidst price increase fueled by subsidy removal

Last Friday, just two days after the new government announced the removal of the fuel subsidy, Mrs. Peace Joseph stopped at the popular Goodwill rice depot at Ipodo, Ikeja to confirm the price of rice.

The sales lady simply addressed as Funke told her that 50kg bag of imported long grain rice was selling for N35,000, while the short grain was selling for N33,000. Similarly a 50kg bag of locally grown rice was selling for N32,000.

As she drove off, she wondered as she has done several times in the past how a bag of rice she was buying for between N8,000-N10,000 even in 2015 was now close to N40,000. How did Nigeria ever get to this dangerous precipice? She wondered aloud.

Going back to the same shop the next day armed with N35,000, to her amazement, the same sales lady she met the previous day, apologetically informed her that the rice was now selling for N37,000. She told her that there was additional N2,000 added to all the brands of rice. Why the sudden price increment? The angry buyer asked rather furiously and was informed that the new price was as a result of the hike in pump price of fuel and transport fare.

The removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria resulted in a significant rise in transportation costs and food prices across the country, impacting the daily lives of Nigerians. The retail cost of fuel determines the cost of almost every good and service in Nigeria.

In Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre, the pump price of petrol shot up significantly, with some filling stations selling as high as N600 per litre.

Rashidi Lawal, a tricycle driver, plies the Iyana-Iba to Mile 2 route. He said that he now buys fuel of at least N12,000 daily.

The driver, popularly called ‘Kosoro 1’, said that when the announcement was made, transport workers doubled the fare the following day to meet the present reality.

He explained that transport fares along the Mile 2-Iyana Iba route cost N200 before the government announced subsidy removal, but the bus fare now costs N300.

“We are likely to take it back to N400 tomorrow. Before now, N7,000 fuel could take you around for the day, but not anymore,” he said.

“Most of us here don’t sleep at home; our houses are far. But what can we do? We sometimes sleep inside ‘Korope’ instead of going home.”

A ginger seller who identified herself simply as Mama Haliya said that she was hopeful that the new administration would do better and put smiles on the face of the masses, but the reverse has been the case. “They said Tinubu has been sworn in, there ought to be a positive difference, but now people (customers) aren’t even coming,” she quipped.

In the nation’s capital city, transport fares shot up by over 100 per cent on many routes as motorists lamented the increase in pump prices.

Investigations revealed that transport fare from Wuse Zone 2 to Wuse market that was previously N300 shot up to N600, while the fare for a trip with others in a cab from Aco Estate, Airport Road, to the secretariat that was N250, rose to N500.

Meanwhile, e-hailing companies have notified customers within the week, informing them of an increase due to the development. A ride in Bolt or Uber from Wuse Zone 2 to Wuye or Wuse 2 that generally would be N700 and N800 now goes for N1,500 or N1,700.

Although the queues have disappeared at filling stations in the city, fares for intrastate and interstate commuting increased significantly as pump prices shot up to N540 per litre. Meanwhile, investigations revealed that Kano Line Transportation hiked its fares on various routes across northern Nigerian cities amid uncertainties over the petroleum subsidy removal.

On Thursday, in a circular approved by its Director of Finance, Sani Dan-Abdul, the agency announced the increment in transportation fares in line with “market realities”.

The fare from Kano to Abuja was increased from N3,500 to N5,000, while Borno moved from N4,000 to N5,500, Adamawa from 5,000 to N7,000, Taraba from N6,000 to N8,000, Gombe from N3,000 to N4,500, Bauchi from N2000 to N3,000, Niger from N4,000 to N5,500, Benue from N7000 to N8,000, and Nasarawa from N5,000 to N7,000.

Though Kano Line motor parks host government-owned vehicles, mostly buses, other privately owned vehicles operate in the parks at a higher price than the government fixed price.

In the Katsina metropolis, although the state government directed the State Transport Authority (KSTA) not to increase fares, commercial motor parks in the state have raised transportation fares by at least N1000.

Investigations also revealed that the famous Akwa IbomTransport Company Park located at Itam Industrial Layout, a new price regime had emerged. For instance, the transport fare from Uyo to Aba increased from N1500 to N2100, while the fare for Uyo to Calabar increased from N3100 to N4,500.

For northern states like Kaduna and Jos, the fares increased from N17,000 to N22,000, representing a 29.4 per cent hike.

A commercial driver in Enugu, Arinze Nwachukwu, said the subsidy removal policy affected their earnings drastically.

Mr. Nwachukwu said since the subsidy removal was effected, he would return from a trip only to realise that he had spent nearly the whole money he made from passengers on buying fuel even as attempts by some drivers to increase the fares forced a drop in patronage. “Passengers are no longer coming. Look at our park. It is empty,” he lamented.

This year, the immediate past government only provided budgetary allocation for petrol subsidy until 30 June, after saying it would leave the incoming administration to make a final decision on the matter.

Opponents of the removal have, however, argued that it would increase the prices of goods and services and further impoverish millions of citizens.

“You cannot remove subsidy without offering to reduce the waste in government,” said Oluseun Onigbinde, Director at Budget IT, a nonprofit and transparency watchdog.

  • Experts mull harm reduction strategy for Nigerian tobacco users

Experts mull harm reduction strategy for Nigerian tobacco users

Harm’s reduction strategy has been identified as a major tool to stem the dangers inherent in tobacco usage.

A cross-section of experts mooted this idea as part of concerted efforts to mitigate the hazards of harmful smoking in the country.

Drawing examples from Sweden’s harm reduction strategy to combat tobacco-related deaths and improve public health, some international health experts urged African policymakers to adopt Sweden’s Tobacco harm reduction strategy to combat tobacco-related deaths and improve public health across the continent.

It may be recalled that over the past 15 years, Sweden reduced its smoking rates from 15% in 2008 to 5.6% till date, which is the lowest smoking rates in Europe with corresponding health impact.

Sweden now has a 41% lower incidence of cancer than other European countries, and a 39% lower mortality rate than the European average from all tobacco related diseases. These achievements highlight Sweden’s smoke-free strategy and underscore the potential benefits of adopting a similar approach in other societies.

According to the experts, Nigeria needs to begin to consider implementing robust tobacco control policies that promote tobacco harm reduction and reduced risk alternatives for smokers who want to but cannot quit. “Policymakers, public health professionals and the scientific community need to foster international research collaboration, ensure that accurate and evidence-based information is readily available to consumers, and actively engage in constructive dialogue among a diverse array of stakeholders.”

Tobacco harm reduction, when approached with a well-coordinated and evidence-based strategy, can play a crucial role in significantly reducing the health impact of smoking in Nigeria, they stressed.

By taking the right steps in prioritising and implementing THR initiatives, Nigeria and other African nations can save millions of lives, alleviate the strain on healthcare systems, and work towards a healthier future for our people. By embracing less harmful alternatives to smoking, and THR strategies, we can begin to make tangible progress in the fight against cigarette smoking.

Citing a recent report tagged: ‘The Swedish Experience: A Roadmap for a Smoke-free Society,’ – published by Dr. Delon Human and Dr. Anders Milton, suggests that if other countries adopt similar measures, 3.5 million lives could be saved across Europe in the next decade.

The Swedish model of Tobacco Harm reduction is the acceptance of less harmful alternatives like snus, nicotine pouches, vapes, and heated tobacco products and ensuring that those alternatives are known to, available and affordable to the general public. These alternatives provide a pathway for smokers to transition away from combustible cigarettes, to non-combustible tobacco or nicotine alternatives that significantly reduce the exposure to harmful chemicals produced by smoking.

Public health experts, consumers, and policymakers converged to discuss the urgent need to implement Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) strategies in Africa, in a THR webinar hosted by Africa Harm Reduction Alliance (AHRA) on the 28th of April 2023.

The panel highlighted the success of countries like Sweden and the United Kingdom, who have embraced lower-risk alternatives to cigarettes, resulting in reduced smoking rates and tobacco-related diseases. The webinar was an urgent wake-up call for African nations, highlighting the pressing need to adopt and leverage tobacco harm reduction (THR) strategies to effectively combat cigarette smoking and its consequences on public health.

“Sweden’s success story should be celebrated as a public health revolution. We should all be on the mountaintop shouting ‘Victory!’ and looking at Sweden as the best-case practice”, Dr. Delon Human, the Secretary-General of the AHRA said. He further added that the efforts are all about saving lives and about improving the quality of life for smokers who’ve been unable to quit.

“Harm reduction is their way out; it’s their fire escape,” Kurt Yeo, a consumer advocate, called for a rethinking of the approach to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and the potential of THR in addressing the smoking pandemic issue.

Dr. Derek Yach, a global health consultant and founder of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, has stressed the need for better access to reduced risk alternatives and more accurate diagnostics for tobacco-related conditions.

He warned against proposals that would regulate harm-reduction products, such as e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches, the same as combustible cigarettes. If we miss the opportunity to adopt THR, “a review in a few years’ time will show that we’ve actually forgotten the opportunity to save many, many lives,” Dr. Yach said.

In order to achieve meaningful progress, towards a smoke-free society in Nigeria, it is vital for us to take learnings from other countries and adapt successful strategies within the context of their/our unique cultural and socio-economic contexts.

Stakeholders from different sectors in Enugu State on Saturday commended Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State for his attempts to get the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu freed from detention.

The stakeholders also endorsed the governor’s declaration to end the Mondays sit-at-home in the state, saying it had done more harm than good.

The endorsement was made at the town hall meeting held by the state government with individual groups and stakeholders following the ban of the Monday sit-at-home.

The meeting was attended by stakeholders and representatives of various bodies, traders, transporters, religious leaders, institutions, organisations, associations, including government officials and heads of security and intelligence agencies at the Old Government Lodge, Enugu, on Saturday, to further deliberate on the subject matter and the way forward.

In the communiqué issued after extensive and exhaustive deliberations at the town-hall meeting, which also had the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, and the Deputy Governor, Barr.
