IMC hails NPFL clubs, referees over 2022/23 Season

Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has praised the 20 Clubs that participated in the recently concluded regular season that was abridged to achieve alignment with International football calendar.

Elegbeleye spoke on the sidelines of the contract signing ceremony with Propel Sports Africa (PSA) for live streaming of the NPFL in the 2023/24 season and noted that “without the cooperation of the clubs’ leadership, the task would have been extremely tedious”.

He recalled some of the challenges the nascent IMC board encountered and how they were navigated with the support of diverse stakeholders and the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development to steady the course of the season.

“Today, I would like to commend the clubs for their understanding and subsequent cooperation with us in implementing our strategies to meet the terms of reference issued to the IMC.

“It obviously was a very onerous task as we inherited huge challenges but I am happy that we found a way to resolve some of those challenges”, Elegbeleye remarked.

He also expressed appreciation to the Minister of Sports, Chief Sunday Dare and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Board for extensive support for some crucial decisions and the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA) members for their performance in match officiating.

“When we came on board and after securing the partnership with GTI for financial guarantee, we asked them to keep the money in trust instead of handing over to us. But we made some demands.

“We requested that they increase the indemnity payment to Match Officials by 50% and they agreed. We also asked that their travel cost be reviewed upwards by 40% and GTI Group Managing Director, Abubakar Lawal said no problem.

“We therefore asked the Referees to give us quality officiating which I can say today they reciprocated very much above average. It is part of our success story”, the IMC Chairman concluded.

He also recalled that towards the start of the season, the IMC facilitated the release of ₦200m to the 20 clubs as start-up grant to enable them ease some funding gaps.

Six Clubs, the top three from each group, qualified for the Super 6 Play-off which will hold in Lagos from June 3-11 at the Mobolaji Arena to determine the overall champions.

Mati’s impressive runs end at WTTC 2023

Nigeria’s last man standing at the ongoing Durban 2023 WTTC in South Africa Taiwo Mati fell last night 4-0 to his Korean counterpart to crash out of the championships following early loss of Africa’s most ranked player, Quadri Aruna in the men’s singles event.

Also yesterday, Dina Meshref being the only surviving African female player in the competition, also crashed in the third round after losing 4-1 to her Japanese opponent.

Mati who in the second round bundled out highly rated Hong Kong opponent , could not contain the pace of the Korean as he practically surrendered the match.

A disappointed Mati told NationSport that he was confused by the pace of his opponent while he failed to raise his game when it mattered most.

“I am happy generally with my performance but today I was just not in the game as the speed of my opponent coupled with his aggressiveness were too much for me to cope,” he said.

However, African only surviving player in the competition is Omar Assar of Egypt.

Assar achieved his beat feat at the WTTC after beating 2021 finalist Truls Moregard of Sweden 4-2 in the third round to book his place in the last 16 of the men’s singles.

  • Napoli increase ‘untouchable’ Osimhen’s transfer fee to £140 million

Napoli increase ‘untouchable’ Osimhen’s transfer fee to £140 million

Manchester United have been told they must pay £140million to sign Victor Osimhen this summer after agreeing a deal to sign his Napoli teammate Kim Min-jae.

Osimhen is a prime target for United this summer and he heads the club’s striking shortlist. United scouts attended Napoli’s Champions League clash against Milan last month and have been planning a move for the Nigerian since last summer.

His Napoli teammate Kim, 26, has already decided to join United despite only moving to Naples last year. The South Korean international enjoyed a tremendous campaign as he starred in the club’s remarkable Serie A title-winning campaign, but his contract contains a £43million release clause.

A deal for Kim is said by Naples-based Il Mattino to be in place, the player has no doubts about joining United – who simply need to pay his clause. Indeed, Napoli have already lined-up Kevin Danso of Lens as Kim’s replacement. A deal for Osimhen is more complicated as no such clause is in place, but Napoli do not consider him as one of their ‘untouchable’ players.

Indeed, Napoli have been planning to sell the Nigerian since last summer; their signings of Giacomo Raspadori and Giovanni Simeone – initially on loan deals – was with a long-term view to softening the blow of Osimhen’s departure.

That is not a foregone conclusion this summer, but president Aurelio De Laurentiis will sanction a sale if an offer in excess of £140million arrives. Of course, this could be negotiated down should Napoli’s stance change but they are open to a sale.

Instead, De Laurentiis views Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Stanislav Lobotka as the two players who will not be transferred under any circumstances this year. They believe that due to their system and squad, that duo is irreplaceable.

Osimhen spoke in March that it would be his “dream” to play in the Premier League as links with him moving to Old Trafford intensified. United have subsequently sent scouts to monitor the striker’s play.

Cannabis In the UK Vs. Nigeria

Cannabis In the UK Vs. Nigeria

Cannabis, which is also known as weed, pot, marijuana, and a thousand other names, appears to be highly addictive for some people who have trouble quitting smoking it. The most effective method to stop smoking weed in this circumstance depends on the comprehension of Maryjane and its consequences for your psyche and body. Marijuana alludes to the dried leaves, blossoms, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Weed sativa.

    Legislation in Nigeria

Legislation about cannabis states that Nigeria is a leading producer and marketer of the drug, with an estimated 10.6 million users in the past year, according to recent national survey findings. Despite its recent removal from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs, which was listed alongside substances considered to have little to no therapeutic uses, cannabis is still regarded as a dangerous drug in domestic legislation, along with cocaine and heroin. It has been said that Nigeria’s drug laws are a military-style social reform strategy aimed at cutting down on drug supply and use.

    Legislation in the UK

People who supply or produce cannabis face up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both, while those found possessing cannabis face up to five years and an unlimited fine. The punishment for possessing cannabis will depend on how much they have, where the drugs were found, their personal history, and any other factors that make the offense worse or better. People caught with cannabis can also receive a warning or an immediate £90 fine from the police.

    Medical cannabis in Nigeria

In Nigeria, medicinal cannabis is considered illegal regardless of whether it is used for recreational or medical purposes. However, the situation is not nearly as straightforward in reality. As indicated by sources, a few specialists recommend pot to their patients. Even though many oncologists in the country believe they are not adequately informed about cannabis, researchers found that nearly half recommend it to patients under their care. Many remarks on the plant’s financial potential and various viable purposes, like making texture, rope, and paper.

    Medicinal cannabis in the UK

In the United Kingdom, medicinal cannabis is legal for patients with qualifying medical conditions through programs like Releaf. However, there are numerous disagreements regarding its use. A patient may be eligible for a medical cannabis prescription for only a few reasons. These include severe epilepsy, multiple sclerosis-related muscle stiffness, and chemotherapy-related nausea. A medicine can only be given when all other treatments have been ineffective. Only a select few patients are anticipated to receive cannabis-based medications from the NHS. Cannabis users are also more likely to drive while impaired. Patients must inform the DVLA of their medical condition to avoid this. In the UK, medical cannabis prescribers must adhere to stringent ethical guidelines.

    Negative discernments in Nigeria

While discernments turned out to be more different as marijuana utilisation spread across Nigerian urban habitats during the 1980s, its portrayal as an image of metropolitan abnormality and criminal brutality likewise became settled in. Beginning with the post-independence Nigerian drug legislation, negative perceptions of cannabis, including its association with deviance, mental illness, and poor academic performance, became part of a discourse that shaped drug policy.

    Statistics of the UK

According to the survey, cannabis was the only illicit drug used more frequently than on special occasions. Adolescent school children (ages 11 to 15) also often employ. The percentage of young adults who have used cannabis in the past year has steadily increased since 2013, reaching 13.5% in 2013 and 16.7% in 2017. While the current figure is much lower than in earlier years (28.2% utilised in 1998), use is still exceptionally predominant among youthful grown-ups.

There is little research on the constructions of cannabis decriminalisation in the narratives of users who are also dealers, even though studies have shown that support for cannabis decriminalisation and legalisation is highest among users. However, if you need cannabis for legitimate medicinal use, consider Releaf.

    Institute stresses chemical safety, security

The Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON), Jwalshik Wilford, has stressed the importance of the safety and security of chemicals.

He stated this at the institute’s sensitisation in Ehuda, Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital on Tuesday.

He said the institute would continue ‘’to advance this course’’ by creating more awareness on the issues, among other things, to enable things to get better.

He added that poorly handled chemicals could cause environmental hazards.

At the event, which had as its theme “Chemical Safety and Security”, the President/Chairman of the Council, Prof. Fanna Inna Abdulrahman, who was represented by the institute’s Vice President, Majek Owoo, warned against making chemicals available to terrorists, saying it would be dangerous to society.

She said: “In recent years, terrorists’ activities have been rampant in the country and these are not unconnected with the fact that people who are handling these chemicals have evil intentions in handling them. They are not supposed to have access to the chemicals and that is where the security aspect comes in.

“We are talking about safety, preventing these chemicals from affecting the public and as well securing the chemicals from people so that they will not be able to misuse them.

  • Tinubu and the birth of a new nation

Tinubu and the birth of a new nation

    • By Sola Olatunji

May 29, Nigeria will witness the dawn of a new era. On that day, the world will stand still for the installation of the kingmaker as king. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be sworn-in as the 16th president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the most populous black nation in the world.

Millions of Nigerians who believe in what Tinubu stands for are already jubilating across the length and breadth of the country clinking glasses of wine and rolling out the drums in special attires specially manufactured for the ceremonies where, according to the organizers of the event, over 200 presidents, heads of state and government functionaries will be in attendance.

Suffice to say here that the new Sheriff in town passed through the valley of the shadow of death on his journey to the Aso Rock Villa. His road to the presidency was rough and laced with thorns, pebbles and landmines. Even, some of the ‘boys’ he turned into men and empowered, betrayed him.

During the build up to the primary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the election proper, landmines were erected on his way by the so-called cabal or better still, conspirators within his party. But the man did not look back as he continued to put his hands on the plough. He didn’t lose focus for a second; rather he kept his eyes on the ball.

He held on to the popular saying: “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Not also fit for a seat in Nigeria’s house of power.

Some of his party’s bigwigs, including serving ministers went underground to support rival party, yet the man with a date with destiny surmounted all the banana peels.

As if that was not enough, some opposition parties mounted propaganda machine with the loudest voice to destroy his personality with all manners of fake news and frivolous cases filed against him in court to truncate his ambition, but this maverick politician and great builder of men and women didn’t blink an eye..

But, this is the time to move on and support this political enigma of our time who through his dexterity turned Lagos to an enviable position in Nigeria and beyond.  It’s time to allow this man with his magic wand to put the country on the right trajectory for the benefit of all because expectations are so mountainous, especially with the beautifully crafted Renewed Hope ideology, envisioned by the grand master himself.

Tinubu is a destiny child, specially spewed out from the brightest side of hope and optimism at this critical time in the history of Nigeria to be the turnaround manager. According to Works Minister, Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN, Tinubu is on a mission to liberate Nigeria from the iron grip of oppressors. Fashola in an interview, recently, said that Tinubu is like Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola, the best manager in modern football coaching. Fashola said that Tinubu knows his players too well. He gives his players all the football tactics but will always parade the touchlines to ensure there will be no mistakes.

In other words, Tinubu entrusts his team with assignments and still supervises the execution, unlike some leaders who give their team instructions and go to sleep. Not Tinubu!

President Muhammadu Buhari also has sweet words as tribute to his successor while giving testimony to Asiwaju Tinubu’s forthrightness, diligence and doggedness. Buhari said it was the same qualities that endeared him to the electorate and gave him all-round success as a private sector worker, a businessman and two-term governor of Lagos State.

Buhari said: “As one of the pillars of the APC, I commend the visionary leadership style of the Asiwaju of Lagos, who is also the Jagaban of the Borgu Kingdom in Niger State, for creating a formidable opposition party in Nigeria that worked vigorously within a short period to oust a party that had been in power for 16 years.

“Tinubu’s patriotism and commitment to democracy and good governance, and his generous spirit will always be remembered and appreciated by generations of Nigerians.

“I pray that the Almighty God will grant the Asiwaju long life, good health, wisdom and prosperity as he steadfastly supports efforts to promote the development of Nigeria.”

In addition, this is the first time Nigeria will have a leading light of democratic struggles as the president of this country. Tinubu is a democrat par excellence and a staunch believer in the rule of law – an apostle of progressive politics and sound advocate of government of inclusion. He believes in wealth creation through entrepreneurship.

No need consulting the crystal ball to know that this chess master in charge of the affairs of this country will lower the temperature of insurgency through appropriate policy of inclusion and drive excellence with multi-dimensional strategies by making our youths to embrace skills acquisition to become business owners rather than job seekers. That’s where the National Orientation Agency comes in to arrest the social drift of youths to Europe in the name of ‘Japa syndrome.                                                                    As Tinubu is being handed the presidential mantle, let’s rejoice and celebrate the birth of a new nation, full of renewed hope.
