Three held over killing of Abuja lawyer

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command yesterday announced the arrest of three notorious robbery suspects involved in the killing of an Abuja-based lawyer, Chigbo Nwamaka Mediatrix.

The suspects are Saifullahi Yusuf, 22 – from Kaduna State, resident at Dan-Tata Community; Dei-Dei, Abuja, Ishau Yusuf, 24 – from Kaduna State, resident at Dan-Tata Community, Dei-Dei, Abuja and Minka’ilu Jibril, also known as Dan-Hajia – from, Kaduna State.

The police said the first and second suspects are brothers.

The police said Mediatrix was killed last week by ‘one chance’ operators but her family insisted that she was murdered by kidnappers for failing to pay a N3million ransom on time.

Her body was discovered on Kubwa Expressway Roadside.

FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Josephine Adeh said the arrest followed the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, to ensure that the perpetrators were nabbed.

She said between January 5 and 10, a team led by the command’s Scorpion Squad, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Victor Ogbeide Godfrey, tracked the victim’s mobile phone and followed up at Dei-Dei, Dakwa, and Dan-Tata communities in Kubwa.

Adeh said the suspects are members of a notorious “one-chance” armed robbery syndicate who had been operating in the FCT for several years, particularly during festive periods.

She said about 5:50 p.m. on  January 5, this year,  Princess Chigbo boarded their black Volkswagen Golf 3 car on the Kubwa Expressway, unaware that the occupants were criminals. Upon entry into the car, the suspects wound up the tinted windows and threatened the victim with weapons to force her to pay ransom for her release. When she allegedly refused to cooperate, she was assaulted and pushed out of the moving vehicle on the expressway, resulting in her death.

The police said the suspects admitted to dispossessing the victim of her Android mobile phone, later sold at Dei-Dei for N120,000.

Jibril received N30,000, Yusuf got N15,000, while Ishau and the suspect at large, Musa, shared the balance, she added.

The police recovered five scissors, two sharp dagger knives, two knives, one long chain used for restraining victims and a plier from the suspects.

Investigation is ongoing, and efforts were in top gear to apprehend the fleeing suspect, as well as to uncover any criminal networks linked to the syndicate, Adeh said.

She said Dantawaye commended the operatives for their efforts and reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to rid the Territory of criminals.

“”Members of the public are once again advised to remain vigilant, avoid boarding unregistered or suspicious vehicles, and promptly report any suspicious activities through the command’s emergency numbers,’’ she added.

  • ‘Troops targeting bandits, terrorists operating in communities, forest reserves in Kwara, Niger’

‘Troops targeting bandits, terrorists operating in communities, forest reserves in Kwara, Niger’

Nigerian Army has sustained scores of military operations within its Area of Responsibility (AOR), targeting criminals in border communities and forest reserves.

It added that it had intensified clearance and internal security operations across parts of Kwara and Niger states.

The efforts, the army said, were aimed at combating banditry, kidnapping and other security threats in the Northcentral region.

Commander, Headquarters 22 Armoured Brigade, Brig-Gen Nicholas Rume, stated this at the weekend during the Nigerian Army Social Activities (NASA) at the Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin.

He said the operations include Operation Fansan Yamma, Operation Harmony in Kwara State, and the recently concluded Operation Park Strike IV and V, which covered Kainji Lake National Park, adjoining villages in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, as well as Kaiama and Baruten local government areas of Kwara State.

“The Year 2025 saw 22 Armoured Brigade conducting a number of clearance, such as Operation Park Strike IV and V which covered Kainji Lake National Park and its adjoining villages and the general areas of Borgu Local Government Area in Niger State, Kaiama and Baruten local government areas of Kwara State,” Rume said.

He added that Operation Fansan Yamma is ongoing, aimed at flushing out bandits and restoring peace across affected communities.

The brigade commander explained that the Army had also strengthened its presence through the establishment of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Patigi and Ilemona, as well as patrol bases in Babasango, Gada and Daban Lema, to support security operations within Kwara and neighbouring states.

“These bases complement our operations in neighbouring states and enhance our response to security threats,” he said.

Rume noted that the Army’s internal security operations were necessitated by rising threats such as terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and armed robbery, which have continued to affect parts of the Northcentral zone.

He assured residents of the army’s readiness to sustain collaboration with other security agencies to ensure peace and stability.

“I assure you all of the readiness of 22 Armoured Brigade to collaborate with all security agencies towards achieving peace and security in our area of responsibility,” he said.

Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, commended the Army, particularly the 22 Armoured Brigade, for its role in curbing insecurity in the state.

Represented by the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Brig-Gen Saliu Tunde Bello (rtd), described the military’s efforts as critical to safeguarding lives and livelihoods, noting that collaboration between the state government and the Army has yielded positive results.

“I applaud the relentless efforts of the 22 Armoured Brigade and the Nigerian Army in combating these challenges. Your bravery and determination in restoring peace and order are commendable, and it is evident that your hard work is making a tangible difference in our state,” AbdulRazaq said.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the military with necessary logistics and cooperation to strengthen ongoing operations.

“The military and the state government collaboration has yielded positive results, and I want to reassure you of my unwavering commitment to this partnership,” the governor added.

AbdulRazaq also expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen W. Shaibu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for their leadership and support to the Armed Forces.

  • Police clear Senator Abbo of rape allegation

Police clear Senator Abbo of rape allegation

The Nigeria Police has cleared Senator Ishaku Elisha Abbo of an alleged rape accusation made against him last year.

The investigators, however, suggested that “there is the need to test this case in court as this will go a long way to satisfy the curiosity of the society.”

The case followed a petition submitted last September to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) by Mrs. Zainab Mohammed, who alleged that the senator raped Khadija Mohammed at his residence in Katampe Extension, Abuja, on June 29, 2025.

Police findings, however, concluded that the essential elements required to establish the offence of rape were lacking, largely due to inconsistencies, delay in reporting, and the absence of corroborative medical and forensic evidence.

A confidential investigation report dated last October 23, and signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Oki Rita Oyintare of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), stated that the IG had directed four specialised units – the FCID Gender Unit, National Cybercrime Centre, Intelligence Tactical Unit (ITU), and Police Medical Unit – to probe the allegation.

According to the report, the alleged incident was said to have occurred between 2pm and 4pm on Sunday, June 29, 2025.

However, the case was not reported to the police until September 15, 2025, nearly three months later.

The report noted: “After an extensive investigation in this case, it was discovered that the essential elements of this offence are lacking as a result of the time frame between the date of the commission of the alleged offence and the time it was reported for police investigation.

“Nevertheless, there is a need to test this case in court of law as this will go a long way to satisfy the curiosity of the society.

“It is suggested that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the Legal and Prosecution Department for vetting and advice. Above is respectfully forwarded for the DIG Force CID information, consideration and approval, please.”

It added that the execution of a search warrant and examination of the alleged crime scene were carried out on October 3, 2025, but “all ingredients to support the offence were not seen probably because of the time frame from June 29, 2025 to October 3, 2025.”

Medical evidence also weighed heavily in the police conclusion. The report revealed that Khadija was taken to Deda Hospital on July 10, 2025, where a medical examination conducted the following day showed that her hymen was intact.

“The medical report from Deda Hospital dated July 11, 2025 indicates that the survivor’s hymen was not breached, meaning the alleged victim is still a virgin as of July 10, 2025, about 11 days after the alleged rape,” the police stated.

The report said further findings showed that screening tests for hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and HIV were all negative.

The police also cited the failure of the complainant to preserve or submit a mobile phone allegedly containing vital evidence for forensic analysis, noting that the phone was later flashed, erasing any potential data.

Witness accounts further weakened the allegation. The report said Patience Jesse, identified as the security personnel who opened the gate for the visitors on the day in question, did not witness any rape.

It also stated that only Abbo, the security man, and Nafisa Mohammed were present in the house at the time, and all denied that any sexual assault occurred.

Investigators also noted that Senator Abbo had earlier accused Khadija Mohammed and Nafisa Mohammed Chigli of stealing his wife’s gold jewellery, a matter he reported at Dawaki Police Station on July 16, 2025.

Concluding the investigation, the police stated: “Nothing incriminating was found during the visit to the scene of the alleged crime and execution of search in the house and premises of the suspect.”

Abbo declined detailed comment, saying he would leave the matter to divine judgment.

“God will expose all evil plans against me and reward the doers according to their deeds,” he said.

Abbo, who represented Adamawa North Senatorial District in the ninth Senate had previously been involved in high-profile controversies, including past legal and public disputes that attracted national attention.

The rape allegation, filed in 2025, generated media interest due to his political status, prompting the IGP to order a investigation involving multiple police units before the eventual decision to clear him of the claim.

Lions Club lifts less-privileged in Lagos community

The Lagos Dynamic Lions Club, District 404B3 has put smiles on the vulnerable residents, widows, orphans and others living with disabilities as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and hunger-fighting initiatives in Ijedodo, Lagos State.

The group provided raw foods and essential commodities to over 400 less-privileged, aimed at addressing the needs like inflation and food insecurity in the community.

The project was supervised by the Club President, Kafayat Tolulope Adebayo; Zone Chairperson, Olakunle Onafowokan; Past President (PP), Jokotade Odumosu; the Club’s Secretary, Cynthia Oluwatoyin Momodu, Club Service Chairperson, Paul Abure. Others were Adebayo Amurukoro and Keshinro Aderonke.

Onafowokan said the initiative was in continuation of January Global Service focusing on hunger relief kicked off by the District 404B3 Governor, Adelaja Adeleye, in Akowonjo, Lagos.

“One of our core mandates as Lions Clubs and a largest humanitarian service provider is to impact lives across communities, we always extend welfare support, bringing relief to less-privileged. Today’s outreach focused on the distribution of foods and essential items to improve their well-being.

“Lions Clubs International has over the years, apart from relief from hunger, engaged on other core projects such as vision/diabetes/childhood/cancer free screenings, provision of drugs, environmental protections. All these are driven by improving health, strengthening communities, and supporting those in need through local and global service

“As Lions Clubs, we don’t just talk; we act. Our name itself speaks of action and results. This project is part of our commitment to ensuring that our impact is felt where it matters most—among the people,” Onafowokan added.

Earlier,  Adebayo said: “This initiative – ‘hunger relief’ reflects one of the organisation’s core values. Adverse effects of hunger in society generally can not be over-emphasised.

“This project aligns with Lions Clubs International mission to reach out to vulnerable and often neglected populations. We believe that true impact is measured by the smiles we create and the hope we restore. It is indeed inspiring to know millions of Lions are doing the same in different parts of the world.’’

Adeleye, while kicking off the project, said: “Hunger remains one of the most pressing challenges facing our communities. In many homes, families struggle to put food on the table. Children go to school hungry, and vulnerable members of society face uncertainty about their next meal. We cannot close our eyes to this reality. This is why Hunger Relief is one of the core global causes of Lions International, and why the Week is so important.

“The January Global Service Week calls on every Lion, every club, and every district to rise in unity and compassion — to translate our motto “We Serve” into tangible action. Whether through food distribution, community kitchens, school feeding programs, partnerships with food banks, or innovative local initiatives, every act of service counts.’’

The event drew a large turnout, who gathered in appreciation of the timely intervention.

Alleged arms discovery: Malami faces DSS probe

    • Olukoyede: I inherited investigation into ex-AGF tenure

Immediate-Past Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), is facing a fresh investigation over the arms and ammunition found in his house.

The Nation learnt that the arms were uncovered at his Kebbi country home by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) during a search.

The anti-graft agency, it was further learnt, handed them over to the Department of State Service (DSS) for a comprehensive probe because it is not within its remit to do so.

The number of arms and ammunition could not be immediately ascertained, but it was gathered that they are high in number to attract a full DSS investigation.

Malami, who was granted bail last week along with his sons – Abdulaziz, Abiru-Rahman, and others – is still in the Kuje correctional centre, having been unable to perfect his bail conditions.

But, sources said he might be taking things slowly to stall the DSS investigation into the weapons found in his house.

“The former minister is being separately investigated for allegedly having arms in his house in Birnin Kebbi. The inventory of the shock find has been handed over to the DSS.

“It is now left to Malami to explain to the DSS how he came about the arms. That’s why he is yet to perfect his bail conditions. He is holed up in prison to avoid arrest by the DSS.

“DSS operatives are within the precincts of Kuje Correctional Service to invite Malami. He got wind of their presence and raised the alarm.  But the law must take its course.”

Another source within the EFCC said Malami had yet to meet his bail conditions.

“By our records, the ex-AGF is still in custody. We saw all manners of fake clips on social media on his purported arrival and rousing reception in Kebbi State,” the source said.

The source added: “The investigation into Malami’s activities during his tenure began when former EFCC Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu was in office.

“Investigation continued through the administration of another Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Chukkol, to the present Executive Chairman. Chukkol, who works in the agency, was in charge briefly before Olukoyede’s appointment.

“There is nothing vindictive about his investigation since 2019. It is an inherited case, and the ex-AGF knows this.”

Olukoyede confirmed that he inherited the Malami case during an interview last night on a national television.

A Federal High Court in Abuja last week ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 assets linked to Malami and his two sons.

The assets have been valued at N213, 234,120,000.

The court has, however, given Malami and the sons or any other claimant a 14-day leave to show proof that the assets were legally acquired.

Failure to present legitimate claims within 14 days may lead to the permanent loss of the assets to the Federal Government.

The court’s order was based on the invocation of the Non-Conviction Asset Forfeiture Clause in the EFCC Establishment Act.

The EFCC had applied to the Federal High Court to seize the suspicious properties in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Birnin-Kebbi.
