End fuel in two weeks, Reps tell NNPC, MDPRC

The House of Representatives has directed the management of the NNPC Limited and the Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (MDPRC) to collaborate with security services to end the current petroleum scarcity in the country within the next two weeks.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance by Saidu Musa Abdullahi (APC, Niger) on the need for government to immediately bring an end to the scarcity which has lingered on since September 2022.

He expressed concern that most of those fueling stations have resulted in selling fuel at over N300 per litre. It is observed with dismay that those who are gaining from this artificial fuel scarcity appear to be smiling home as a result of this ugly development and this has the potency to provoke innocent Nigerians against the Government.

He said further that “generally, there is a hue and cry over this ugly development and unfortunately, those that are charged with the responsibility of taking control of this situation are not doing enough to combat the ugly development. This appears to be a dangerous signal that the Government must tackle without further delay to restore normalcy.

“The lingering fuel scarcity has compounded the woes of millions of Nigerians struggling to survive as prices of items continue to make a rapid surge. It has added a high cost of living to Nigerians which surged to a 17-year high of 21.09 per cent in October.

“The inability of the regulators of the petroleum sector to end this artificial scarcity of petroleum products forced the Department of State Security Services to issue an ultimatum to the NNPC, and oil marketers to end the artificial scarcity within 48 hours

  • I did not engage 12,000 workers, says Oyetola

I did not engage 12,000 workers, says Oyetola

Former Osun Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has denied recruiting 12,000 workers towards the end of his administration in the State.

Instead, Oyetola said that his administration only employed 2,000 workers in the last few months of his government.

Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had accused Oyetola of recruiting 12,000 workers at the twilight of his administration.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ engagement with members of the Osun Young Professionals in Kwara State in Ilorin, media aide to the former Governor Ismail Omipidan, described the allegation as fictitious.

“It’s a lie. We challenged them to prove it by producing a list of the 12,000 workers employed within two months and they couldn’t. What’s even the workforce of Osun state? The fact is that we only employed 1,500 teachers and 500 casual health workers whose appointments were regularised, making 2,000 workers. Some were even employed before the election and some others after the election. We worked till the last day commissioning projects and not that we were creating landmines.” he said.

Omipidan said that the Oyetola administration gave a good account of itself during the four years of administration, adding that the state internally generated revenue (IGR) was improved from about N10 billion to about N19 billion annual revenue.

He said:”We built over 500 Kilometers of roads within four years. Most of the roads we did were roads that were abandoned some 30, 40 years ago. Examples are Ada-Igbajo road, Alekuwodo network of roads, and Iwo-Oshogbo road. We flagged off the construction of Iwo road before we left. As I speak, work is ongoing on Iwo-Oshogbo road. These are parts of the promises we made. For me, I always argue that we never lost the election we only lost the vote count.

“We didn’t take any bank facility for four years. Before we came in in 2018, payment of salary was a huge challenge. For the four years we spent, we did not owe salary. Even, the November salary, my principal signed before we left office.

“If you know our situation in Osun before 2018, you’ll marvel. One of the things we deliberately kept out of the media until recently was the level of indebtedness. We deliberately kept it out because we don’t want to let it look as if we are trying to undermine anyone. Unfortunately, it became our albatross.

“When Oyetola took over in 2018 we inherited debt. What we did was to find means of making things work for the four years we have governed Osun. We didn’t add to the debt we inherited.”
