Five feared dead in A’Ibom cult clash

The police have taken over the popular Ibom Plaza, a recreational centre located in the heart of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital after five persons were reportedly killed and others badly injured in a cult clash on Tuesday.

The Nation learnt that two rival cults groups-Vickings and the Mafians- clashed around 6.30pm on Tuesday. The bloody encounter lasted for about two hours.

The situation could not be contained until police operatives and a detachment of soldiers standing guard at the plaza area intervened. This is the biggest fracas since the #EndSARS protests last year.

Aniekan Akpainyang, a tricycle operator, who spoke to journalists, linked the remote cause of the violence to a minor disagreement at a betting shop, along Ikot Ekpene road by the plaza area, recalling that the incident triggered the old animosity between the rival groups.

He said: “One cultist, a member of the Vickings confraternity had placed a bet to the tune of N5,000, but could not pay after he lost. The shop attendant asked him to pay or drop his phone, but he refused and, instead call his gang members on phone, who came, pounced on the attendant and raided the shop.”

He added that the resultant reprisal from the camp of the booking man, said to belong to the Mafians group, led to a free -for-all, with three persons killed; two at the Plaza area and one at the Ikpa road junction, close to the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) town campus, while two others, had earlier been killed at Okokon Etuk street, few meters to the Uyo City centre.

However, the Police confirmed the incident but could not volunteer information on the casualty figures in a statement on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko Macdon.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), at about 6:30pm, the Command received information about a Cult clash at the Plaza.

“While the Commissioner of Police, CP, Olatoye Durosinmi, condemned in strong terms, the unfortunate incident which caused palpable fear among the good people of the state, the CP has reminded those involved in this dastardly act to note that the ban on cultism in the state is still in force and that henceforth, perpetrators of such acts will be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with extant laws.

“The CP has therefore, called on residents to go about their lawful duties without fear of molestation as the Command has emplaced adequate security at the Plaza and around the state, throughout the Yuletide and beyond,” the Police said.

  • Why we embarked on rehabilitation of government road’

Why we embarked on rehabilitation of government road’

The Simawa Axis Development Association(SADA) has explained why residents in the community embarked on the rehabilitation of a state road abandoned by the Ogun State Government.

SADA spokesperson Dr Kolade Segun-Okeowo told newsmen at the site of the rehabilitated road has been sustained by the communal efforts and efforts of their next-door neighbour, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) headquarters.

Segun-Okeowo, who also doubled as chairman of the Simawa road works project, noted the community got on the rehabilitation because the road network is paramount to the commercial and economic development of any country.

He said: “The road has been kept alive by the effort of the RCCG. But of course, as you all know that the church alone might not be able to do all that is needed to be done on this road. Therefore, the volume of traffic on the road has definitely affected the upgrading and the road reliability. So the deplorable state of the road is affecting vehicle transportation and movements and apart from that, it is also a dangerous security sign.

”Because of course, if there’s an issue in the community, it will be difficult to raise quick action and quick response. So that’s why we are standing up to say that enough is enough. Yes, this is an effort of the whole community. Of course, individuals make up a community. This is a vision effort spearheaded by the SimawaAxis Development Association”.

When asked if the community has reached out to the Ogun State Government, he said: “Yes, we have tried to reach out to the government. We have written letters to Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, We have written letters to the Commissioner for Community Development. We have written letters to the Commissioner for Works. We have also written letters to relevant agencies to come to our rescue. So far we have not received any response from any of these people”.

The filmmaker stated the first phase is a 1- kilometer stretch that includes grading, drainage and lateral filling estimated to cost the community about N45 million.

He added that the second phase will commence before the festive period, calling on the State Government to beam its lights on Simawa community before the 2023 general elections.

  • Nigeria first to regulate methane in Africa, says US

Nigeria first to regulate methane in Africa, says US

The United States Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has said that Nigeria is the first country in Africa to set bold targets and robust regulations for methane reduction.

In a statement by the State Department Press Office Blinken said methane could reduce air pollutants by a third and avert tens of thousands of deaths.

He spoke at a forum with the theme ‘Climate adaptation and just energy transition forum’ with five African leaders at the ongoing U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.
The forum took place at the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington DC, US at the ongoing U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.

The African leaders in attendance include President Muhammadu Buhari, President Wavel Ramkalawan of Seychelles, President Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, President Teodoro Obiang of Equatorial Guinea and President Bongo Ondimba of Gabon.

According to Blinken, Africa is the most considered continent with greater need for support on climate change.

He said: “The diversity of this group is heartening – a statement not merely of how we’re all affected by the climate crisis, but how committed we all are to working together to address it.

“Last month many of us were in Egypt for COP27. An African COP was a recognition that, as the urgency of the climate crisis grows, our focus must increasingly be on Africa.

“17 of the world’s 20 most climate vulnerable countries are on the African continent. Four straight years of drought in the Horn of Africa have left more than 18 million people facing severe hunger,” he said.

He added that communities across Africa are feeling the impact of a changing climate.

“Severe storms have battered southern Africa; surging temperatures kindle wildfires in northern Africa; rising seas threaten lives and livelihoods on island nations, while extreme weather events in central Africa worsen already-dire food crises and fuel tensions that feed and fuel violent conflict.

“We know that African nations have contributed relatively little to this crisis but are disproportionally harmed by it. It’s both unfair and unrealistic to ask them to turn their backs on economic development and opportunity in the name of a clean energy transition, to ask them in effect to forego what many of us have done in the past in developing our countries and our economies. And so we believe that the best way – indeed, the just way – to address the climate crisis in Africa is to work together.”

Musicians different from artistes – Bella Shmurda

Afrobeats singer Bella Shmurda has said musicians are not same with artistes, highlighting the existing difference between the two category of personalities.

He explained an artiste is a person is can sing already made songs as they lack creativity to make their own sound but a musician creates his own song and sings it.

He argued artistes sing songs simply to trend unlike musicians that aim at making an impact with their craft and more importantly for longevity.

The Dangbana Republik frontliner went on to list some musicians including Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, Burna Boy and himself.

“Musician is different from an artiste. Artiste can just sing. Artiste na trend. Something dey blow you jump on am, e hot,” the “Vision 2020” crooner said.

“Musician is different. Fela is a musician. Pasuma is a musician. Burna Boy is a musician, he is not an artiste. Angelique Kidjo is a musician, she is not an artiste. Bella Shmurda is a musician, I am not an artiste.

“Artiste is just someone that is known for singing. It’s different from someone that is known for doing music.

“Singing is different from music o! I can sing your song o. You go sing am, I go re-sing am but creating your own sound, being your own self, developing that new sound is the musician thing.

“And Bella Shmurda is a musician, I’m not an artiste. I just don’t sing. I don’t sing o! I don’t sing for song sake, I don’t sing for hit.

“Musicians don’t sing for hit. Musicians do music for impact. For longevity.

“So there’s a difference between a lot of us out there. The goal is to be a pioneer of something. To be a legend in something.

“Afrobeats, we have Fela is a legend already. We need a new sound. Even if it’s under sub Afrobeats, someone will bring it. Someone gas start it. And it’s only a musician that can do it. An artiste will always keep doing Afrobeats. A musician will change it.”
