  • Group advocates support for PWDs

    Group advocates support for PWDs

The Chairman Resource Centre for the Blind (RCB), Vice-Admiral Jubrila Ayinla has advocated enforcement of basic human rights so that persons with disabilities are not excluded from all facets of life.

Ayinla said this at the 2022 International Day of persons with Disabilities event at the weekend.

He said the centre joined the world to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

“It is crucial that persons with disabilities are empowered and afforded equal opportunities to participate in their society. However, many persons who are blind and visually impaired, are
disadvantaged. In the African context, educated young professionals have challenges of equal opportunities let alone those who are disabled.”

“The World Bank Group Nigeria states that out of 18 million PWD in Nigeria, only 0.3% are gainfully employed. According to World Blind Union, less than 10% of published materials are available in formats that print-disabled people can read, putting such persons at disadvantage in their studies, and a majority of the visually impaired do not have access to Transformative solutions that would aid their dependency.”

“In an effort to address this problem, many innovative technologies have been made to lower barriers that persons with disabilities encounter in their daily lives such as communicating, Navigating, reading, and writing. Currently, innovations that are made available for the blind can be summarized to include mobility canes, cellphones, tactile, braille, screen reader, and Talking wristwatches,” he said.

He said the resource centre located at 373 Borno Way, Yaba, Lagos, took steps to cater further to the needs of persons with visual impairment by rehabilitating and equipping them with the skills and requisite platforms to blossom, as well as capacity building of institutions working within the space to be able to leverage on the use of technological development.

Speaking further, he said, however, not all of the affected persons have access to innovative technologies. In using the world wide web, there are barriers that assistive technologies may impose as well as the affordability of technology products, discrimination, and stigmatization, preventing the spread of accessibility to the end users.

“On the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, (themed; Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world), we are calling for equal technology accessibility and equitable opportunities for all. We
implore the Government, Policymakers, and Corporate entities to work together and make affordable transformative solutions available; invest in inclusive employment, as well as ensure the empowerment of disability-focused organizations to support and provide services to persons with disabilities.”

Ayinla concluded that it is pertinent that policymakers make efforts to raise awareness surrounding disability as this would serve to shift negative perceptions and stigma against persons with disabilities in the
    society.

Aruwa Capital to invest $2.5 million in Nigeria, Ghana

Aruwa Capital Management has said that it will invest between $500 to $2.5 million in women-focused small and growing businesses in Nigeria and Ghana.

The investments, it said, will be in critical sectors such as healthcare, fintech, renewable energy, and essential consumer goods.

CEO of Aruwa Capital Management, Adesuwa Okunbo Rhodes said its first institutional fund was oversubscribed and exceeded its expected target of $20 million.

Aruwa Capital is a female-founded and led early state growth equity and gender lens investment fund.

The fund’s first institutional and anchor investor is Visa Foundation, followed by other investors such as Mastercard Foundation Africa

Growth Fund, Nyala Venture, backed by Financial Sector Deepening Africa Investments and leading family businesses from Africa, Europe and, the United States.

The firm was founded in 2019 by Adesuwa Okunbo Rhodes with more than a decade of investment banking and private equity experience from leading global organisations such as J.P. Morgan.

Rhodes pointed out that the investment gap faced by women in Africa which comprised 40% of all small and medium enterprises (SMEs) regrettably received only 1% of startup capital 1 which she attributed to the lack of female capital allocators in the region.

“Through its investment strategy, the Fund aims to create more sustainable and scalable pathways for economic growth and inclusion in the region.

“The Fund will invest $500 thousand to $2.5 million in women focused small and growing businesses in Nigeria and Ghana, targeting investments in critical sectors such as healthcare, fintech, renewable energy, and essential consumer goods.

“Aruwa invests in innovative businesses, poised for scale, that provide essential goods and services to the rapidly expanding female economy, and businesses that are founded or led by women or have gender diverse teams.”

Head of Investments at Visa Foundation Najada Kumbuli, said: “We deeply believe that in order to address the financing gap that women-led small businesses face, we need to empower and invest in more women-led investment funds like Aruwa.

“We were impressed by Adesuwa’s track record and her approach at tailoring the Fund’s financing to small businesses’ needs.

“We believe the team’s deep commitment to driving equitable and inclusive economic growth through investments will meaningfully support the business owners and the communities they operate in.”

Akyianu, Chief of Party at the Mastercard Foundation Africa Growth Fund (MFAGF) said:

“We selected Aruwa Capital as one of our first investments because we were impressed by the team’s grit, conviction, and depth of analysis, their value addition for early-growth stage SMEs in Nigeria, and their commitment to drive impact for women and youth. We look forward to working with the team to help make Aruwa Capital a success story.”

Bart Schaap, Managing Director at Nyala Venture noted: “With our investment, we are putting our weight behind local and innovative capital providers in Sub Saharan Africa with a focus on gender lens.”

  • ‘Why 179 communities appointed Metchie Anambra Prime Minister’

‘Why 179 communities appointed Metchie Anambra Prime Minister’

The National President of Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU), Chief. Titus Nnabuike Akpudo, has explained why the association appointed the President-General (PG) of Umueri General Assembly, Chief Johnny Chukwudi Metchie, as the Prime Minister (Onowu) of the State.

Metchie, who is the African Director of the International Association for Peace Advocates, was officially inaugurated as ASATU Prime Minister following his appointment by 179 PGs, representing all the communities in the State.

The occasion took place at ASATU Secretariat, Government House, Awka, with Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his deputy.

Briefing newsmen, Akpudo, who is also the National Vice President of the Southeast Association of Town Unions, said the process of selecting a Prime Minister was painstaking.

He said the body took many things into consideration, in order to appoint the most deserving.

He described Metchie as an outstanding personality who has used his office, wide contacts and personal resources to change the story of Umueri within the short period of his leadership.

“We appointed Chief Metchie as ASATU Prime Minister because he deserved it. He has demonstrated exemplary leadership and unprecedented development to Umueri, the kind we have not seen before in the community. He has also assisted ASATU in many ways. And this just for the few months he has been in office.

“Apart from his philanthropist gestures and ingenuity, Chief Metchie has proved himself to be a motivator.

“For example, we were waiting for the government on community policing but Metchie moved on to install CCTV to cover the entire Umueri community which has made the area very secure and almost crime-free. We considered that alone as an outstanding achievement, in view of the precarious security situation in the country.

“He assisted his people in upgrading health facilities and attracted so much attention that the state government has just approved the renovation of Umueri General Hospital, among two others.

“Metchie has constructed roads in some villages in the community, he is constructing a new market and carrying out weekly sanitation, giving scholarship to indigent members of the community and have secured health insurance cards for the elderly in Umueri for free treatment,” Apugo said.

Metchie who holds the titles of Ezi of Umueri and Ozoigbondu, bestowed on him by Eze-Enugu Aguleri, thanked ASATU leadership for finding him worthy of the position of Prime Minister, adding that recognition comes with the twin sense of humility and motivation.

He said: “I am humbled by the award because, barely seven months in office as the President General of Umueri General Assembly, it is a rare privilege that the entire members of this Association, made up of great leaders, could consider me for the honour, the first person to be so recognized.

“The award is a motivation to me because, I see it as a challenge to do more, to further expand the frontiers of our humble efforts towards tackling the basic issues affecting our people. I see the award as a motivation to work closer with the state government, ably led by the Governor, His Excellency, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, for our people, this time, not only Umueri, but the entire 179 communities that make up Anambra State.”

According to him, whatever he had done for the community and others was inspired by God and support from his people.

“Within these past seven months, God has been lavishly benevolent to me and the entire Umueri community, especially by giving us the illumination to see clearly, areas of need and the resources to provide basic interventions for the betterment of our people.

”On security, our community’s local vigilante has been officially recognized by the state government while modern security gadgets have been provided for the personnel. We also donated vehicle for border patrol to ensure peace and better relationship with our neighbours like Aguleri and others.

“We commenced and completed the inauguration of new executive members of the Nigerian hunters and forestry security service, Umueri and recruited 100 able-bodied men to strengthen their capacity.

“We commenced and have completed the installation of Solar Powered Street Lights in Umueri including the IDP camp.”

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, Metchie paid tribute to former Governor Willy Obiano for constructing what he described as a legacy project and commended Soludo for his commitment to building a livable homeland for the state, expressing the hope that Soludo’s administration would further provide more needed facilities at the airport.
