  • Unease over Kogi’s plan to relocate 200- year-old palace

Unease over Kogi’s plan to relocate 200- year-old palace

There is tension in Oweland in Kabba, headquarters of Kabba/Bunu LGA, Kogi State, over alleged plans by the State Government to rebuild and relocate the 200-year-old royal palace in the town.

One of the ruling houses, the Ilajo royal house, kicked against the relocation of the 200-year-old palace and urged the govt to await the court’s ruling on the matter.

They appealed to the State Government not to accede to calls for relocation of the palace ‘as being canvased by some indigenes’.

It added the building of a new palace for the ancient as being demanded by the present monarch will not augur well for the determination of the litigation, which they said is already at the Supreme Court.

Their position was made known when members of the clan spoke with newsmen in Kabba as well as walked them around the point where past Obaros (Kabba Kings) were buried inside the palace, including Micheal Olobayo, who was buried in 2016.

The Obasaiyepe of Oweland, Chief Peter Oloba, who spoke on behalf of the ruling house urged the state government to wait till the determination of the suit initiated by the Ilajo family against the present Obaro of Kabba before any decision on the construction of a palace should be considered.

He stated: “We have called this press conference to debunk the deliberate act of gross misinformation and mischief unleashed by Chief Solomon Owoniyi on the occasion of the year 2022 Kabba Day, which took place on Saturday, November 6, 2022 at the Kabba Township stadium asking for the construction of a new palace in Kabba.

“We see this as a deliberate act of causing confusion and as usual, a way of distorting the historical facts and age-long tradition and culture of Oweland, by insinuating that there is no palace in Kabba.

“We hereby set the records straight and wish to state categorically without equivocation, that Kabba Town has always had a palace, significant paraphernalia of royalty and the center point of Owe culture and tradition.

“Our palace, the Obaro palace is well over 200 years old. Our palace is called Aoffin (the Owe dialect for the Yoruba world Affi, which means palace).”

“Several Obaros have occupied this palace for centuries and their earthly remains are interred in and around this palace. Amongst are: “Obaro Baba Mokelu (1870), Obaro Baba Ajinuhi (1870), Obaro Baba Gbayero aajibohokun (a1922) ….Obaro Micheal Olobayo (2016).

“We believe that the Kogi State government should not get involved in an issue that is not unconnected with the matters in a court of the land and as such stay action on anything that concerns this sensitive matter.

“We of Ilajo the Royal Family of Kabba, Oweland, are praying the Kogi State government to allow for the full determination of the subsisting court case before the decision of regarding the palace is made.”

“I hear you are now praying for side chicks to die. Women like that so much. Instead of praying for them to die say God bless the side chick with her own husbands,” he said.

The controversial 69-year-old preacher argued genuine born-again Christians do not kill, which is why they must stop offering prayers for side chicks to die.

He further noted the men are to blame as they are the ones that usually make first passes at the side chicks.

“Your husband owes you loyalty and in this case, he is the one in the wrong. Instead of praying for the side chick to die why not kill your husband first?

“If you are truly born again then you would know that two wrongs don’t make right. Christians have not been called to kill,” Ng’ang’a added.
