  • Don’t be scared of 2023 polls CAN, Osinbajo tell Nigerians

Don’t be scared of 2023 polls CAN, Osinbajo tell Nigerians

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has allayed the fears of Nigerians over the 2023 elections.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha at the 2022 Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Sunday evening at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, said that fear should be replaced with assurances and belief in God

He said: “Your theme of this year’s celebration is ‘Fear not’. This is a very important subject for every one of us even as we approach 2023 which has been described as a year that Nigeria seems to be at a crossroads. We are approaching the year 2023. Yes, we are going to have elections and we are going to have a census exercise.

“All these issues come with a lot of questions, but we have an assurance from our Lord and Saviour. He will not let our hearts be troubled. We should believe in Him and believe in God.”

National President of the Christian Association Of Nigeria (CAN) Archbishop Daniel Okoh advised that fear should not make Nigerians resort to making negative decisions like rigging and violence.

He said: “As Nigerians prepare for the general elections in 2023, many people are not sure of the outcomes. There are fears that some may resort to violence if the elections do not favour them. It is a period that arsonists have already destroyed election materials in certain places with the mindset to truncate the process of the elections in 2023.

“We are in a precarious time because people who are displaced from their homes due to insecurity are not sure of how to participate in the forth-coming elections.

“These situations are really frightening but how should we respond to these situations in which we find ourselves? Fear could lead to irreparable mistakes. Should we live in fear? No, we should not be afraid even in the face of all these challenges.

“Let the story of Christmas move us to speak the language of peace to our neighbours regardless of differences in religion, ethnicity or political leanings.

“We should not allow fear to stop us from working against injustice. Let the resources and positions in governance be shared equitably among people of all regions and tribes. Equitable distribution of positions should not threaten the existence of any ethnic or religious group, rather it will help us to harness the abundance of potentials in our dear country for national development.

“We should not allow the fear of losing elections to lead us into violence and rigging before, during and after the 2023 elections. Politicians should engage in electioneering campaigns and elections properly with the mindset that after all genuine efforts are made, we should surrender to God for the final decision.

“We should not allow fear to lead us to the temptation of misleading the unsuspecting public with fake and disjointed stories. Religious and political leaders and the media must present the true position of issues to Nigerians to enable them to make informed decisions at the polls for the good of all.

“Fear of the unknown should not be allowed to lead our young people to migrate to other countries in search of greener pastures. We can make our pastures here greener again. It requires commitment and consistency.

“The fear of living in poverty should not lead people to steal public funds. Fear leads people to amass wealth through illegal means. It is important to point out that those who see corrupt activities going on but do not speak against such activities are afraid of being exposed as accomplices or afraid of their lives. Fear does not bring progress.”

The statement reads: “Neither IPOB nor ESN operatives have anything to do with Nigeria fraud elections in 2023. We have never supported nor involved ourselves in any election obstruction or violence as a movement. The only action we can take is to call our people to boycott voting if the need arises. But as of today, IPOB is not interested in Nigeria and its electoral activities and has never asked anyone to carry out any attack on our behalf.

“For the Nigeria Government and police to link IPOB and ESN to their sponsored attacks on INEC offices has shown that they are deluded, misguided, deceitful and don’t know the norms on which IPOB operations.”

  • Nigeria, Vietnam sign MoU on Defense Cooperation

Nigeria, Vietnam sign MoU on Defense Cooperation

Nigeria and Vietnam have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation during a bilateral meeting at the Presidential Palace in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

The agreement is one of the highlights of the meeting between Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his Vietnamese counterpart, Madam Võ Thị Ánh Xuân as part of Nigeria’s Vice President’s three-day official visit to the Southeast Asian nation, the first high-level trip from the Presidency since 2005 when then President Olusegun Obasanjo visited.

According to a statement by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, Mr Laolu Akande, the need for improved collaboration between Nigeria and Vietnam was the focus of the bilateral meeting.

The statement said to deepen the long-standing relations between them, both countries planned to work together more, particularly in the areas of digital economy, telecommunications, agriculture and trade, among others, for the mutual benefit of the citizens.

The Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation was signed by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Vietnam, Ambassador Hassan Adamu Mamani, on behalf of Nigeria, while Vietnamese Deputy Minister of National Defence, Senior Lt. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien, signed on behalf of his country.

Osinbajo and Madam Xuân acknowledged the countries’ great market potential generally and especially in the digital economy, telecommunications, agriculture (especially cashew nut processing) and trade.

Osinbajo said: “There are vast opportunities that exist for cooperation and collaboration, especially in the area of digital economy and telecoms, and we look forward to the signing of some of the agreements that we have spoken about – the trade and investment agreements, trade projection agreements, double taxation agreements.

“We look forward to accelerating the process, ensuring that those agreements are signed because they are vital to the collaborations that we will see between our countries in the coming years,” the Vice President noted.

Continuing he noted that “another area I think we might be able to cooperate with you more is in the area of digital economy.”

He noted that despite the COVID-19 disruptions and other occurrences that affected the economy, Nigeria has built, over the past few years, six companies that are engaged in fintech and e-commerce, now described as Unicorns (companies that are valued over a billion dollars each).

“We think that there are opportunities for collaboration between Nigeria and Vietnam, especially in the Digital Economy space. We also have a growing telecoms market, possibly one of the deepest penetrations of telecoms in the developing world. We have close 120 million of our citizens who have put to use telecoms equipment or devices. And also, broadband connectivity is vastly improved. We hope that by 2025, we will have broadband connectivity for all of our over 200 million people,” he noted.

In the area of agriculture, Osinbajo said: “Given the food crisis that the world faces today, and is likely to continue facing even in the coming years, I like to say that the way forward is for our countries to collaborate. For instance, establishing cashew processing plants in Nigeria. What has happened in the past was the export of raw cashew, but at this point, we are concerned about value addition. We will like to see value addition.

“This is an area where Vietnam obviously has significant advantage and experience in the area of cashew processing. If these cashew processing centres are established in Nigeria, we will be able to have an opportunity to add value to raw cashew. In that way, we will draw from the benefits that our countries can derive from the cashew value chain.”

On Vietnam’s quest to establish relations with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Osinbajo assured his Vietnamese counterpart that “we will certainly support Vietnam’s establishment of relations with ECOWAS, we think that it is a very positive thing indeed and we are very mindful of the opportunities that will be created with that kind of collaboration.”

“I just wanted to also add that Nigeria is the largest economy in Africa and this puts us at the centre of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement, which opens up trade in what will become the world’s largest free trade zone.

“We think that Nigeria as the gateway to the rest of Africa is strategic, and we hope that with some of the collaborations that we will be able to sign – specifically trade and industry agreements, Vietnam will see the opportunity in using Nigeria as a staging post for entry into the African Free Trade Zone and for greater collaboration with Africa,” the VP added.

On her part, the Vietnamese Vice President commended Nigeria’s leadership role in the ECOWAS sub-region and in Africa generally, especially in the peaceful resolution of disputes based on international laws, and in the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

She expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capability to resolve challenges confronting the continent and sub-region and sought the country’s support for Vietnam’s quest to establish relations with ECOWAS.

Madam Xuan also appreciated Nigeria’s support to Vietnam, especially in supporting her country’s candidates at multilateral forums, including United Nations, among others.

She spoke about the advance of digital transformation in Vietnam, and also stated the country’s commitment to the global energy transition, adding that her country would continue to work with Africa to meet its aspirations in agriculture, clean energy and digital penetration.

Shortly before arriving at the Presidential Palace, VP Osinbajo visited the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum to pay respect to the late Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh.

Prof. Osinbajo will later this evening be hosted to a State Banquet by the Vietnamese Vice President, Madam Xuan. Before that he would also hold a meeting with Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính.
