Poor diet, poverty fuelling malnutrition in Bauchi – Experts

Poor food combination has been identified as one of the factors fueling malnutrition in Bauchi State.

Poverty, ignorance, lack of formal education, and other negative socio-economic indices were said to have exacerbated the situation.

Nutrition experts stated this during a facility visit to Toro General Hospital in Bauchi on Saturday.

The visit was facilitated by the Bauchi Radio Corporation (BRC) with funding from the Bauchi Field Office of the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF during a 2-day media dialogue on Exclusive breastfeeding held at the Crest Hotel, Jos, the Plateau capital for Journalists in the North-East.

Speaking with the Nation, the Higher Nutrition officer in Toro Local Government Area, Habeebu Mohammed said at least 10 cases of malnourished children were recorded daily in Toro General Hospital.

He stressed on the importance of exclusive breastfeeding by mothers, saying that it reduces the risks of children’s killer diseases.

This is as he encouraged mothers to breastfeed the baby for 6 months before engaging in complementary breastfeeding.

According to Mohammed, the mothers who also suffer from malnourishment feed their babies ‘Kunu’ and ‘Tuwo’ because this is the food that is common in the community.

Kunu Zaki is a popular drink made from whole grains of millet and sometimes sorghum or corn and Tuwo Dawawa is a traditional corn swallow that goes in different soups especially draw soup is one.

In his words: ” The overall assessment of nutrition in Toro local government is very poor. Despite the fact, we have a lot of food around us. We have soya beans, groundnut, maize, and everything around us but because of the level of ignorance on the food source of such nutrients when they come we look at them and are even surprised.

“We asked to know if they’re from Toro or Maiduguri because we have abundant food resources but the problem is that they don’t know our to combine these foods.”

He however regretted that health authorities that are expected to promote the practice are not doing that, a development he said must be mitigated to save the lives of the children.

Mohammed said further that there is also a need to engage the traditional rulers, religious leaders, and health personnel to put more effort into educating mothers and creating nutritional awareness and campaigns on the nutrition aspect and the importance of food to the baby and mother.

The Nation reports that a Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) this year showed that the practice of Infant and Young Child feeding, IYCF, is lower in Bauchi state with only about 34 percent (3 in every 10) of children between the ages of 6 months to 23 months fed minimum diet.

  • I’m serving Nigeria with my multiple wives – Ned Nwoko

I’m serving Nigeria with my multiple wives – Ned Nwoko

Billionaire Ned Nwoko has attributed the high level of prostitution to Southerners shunning polygamy

In an interview with Guardian on Saturday, Nwoko said a man with multiple wives focuses more on them as opposed to a monogamous man who lavishes money on girlfriends.

He also made reference to his ancestral lineage and that of the Ooni’s known for multiple wives.

Nwoko, who is seeking the senatorial seat for the Delta North, said: “Many women are out there on their own without husbands, especially in the southern part of the country, and there is a high level of prostitution.

“What some of our girls do to make ends meet is regrettable and if our men emulate their northern counterparts by having more than one wife, that could probably change the situation.

“The average southern may have only one wife but many girlfriends also, and he is spending his money on the girlfriends; sometimes even more than on his wife.

“The man, who has three wives, for instance, concentrates on them and his children; every money he makes is spent on the family and he is more likely not to have any girlfriends or concubines. The money those with several girlfriends spend on them is a gift, not an investment in the family.”

Nwoko, who has four wives and 19 children, added that he and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, were serving Nigeria by marrying many women.

“My grandfather and the Ooni’s grandfather and the then Olowo of Owo took many photographs together. So, the Ooni and I have that kind of common background, because our grandfathers were kings and served Nigeria in that capacity. And we are now also serving Nigeria by having many wives,” he stressed.

  • 2023 payback time for Tinubu – APC North East Youths

2023 payback time for Tinubu – APC North East Youths

The All Progressive Congress (APC) youths in the North East has inaugurated an 88- member Presidential Campaign Council for the ruling party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Gombe.

They said it is time to pay back for Tinubu’s love and support for the people of the region.

Addressing journalists after the inauguration of the council members at International Hotel Gombe, the APC North East Zonal Youths leader, Dr. Jason Baba Kwaghe said the council members selected almost on equal numbers cut across the six States of Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba and Bauchi in the North East.

“He is a supporter of the North East. He has supported Atiku Abubakar from Adamawa state, supported Nuhu Ribadu from the same Adamawa state and picked Kassim Shettima from Borno state. I have never seen a bigger lover of the North East in the country than Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

He said the ruling party is relying on its structures across the country to deliver victory for Tinubu in the 2023 general election.

“Elections are won by people who have feet on the ground. We have 21 Governor’s of the APC, more than 80 senators and over 200 House of Representatives members. All these ones have sworn to the party and the people that they are going to deliver Asiwaju for the presidency and we are holding them for their words,’ he said.

According to him, Tinubu’s presidency for Nigeria means cohesion, unity and keeping to promise adding that Tinubu has worked all his life for the emergence of northern presidential candidate.

“In 2007, we saw how he supported the current presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Atiku Abubakar to emerge as the presidential candidate of the Action Congress and gave him the platform. Unfortunately he didn’t succeed. In 2011, he did the same thing with our brother from the same Adamawa state as Atiku, Malam Nuhu Ribadu as the presidential candidate of the ACN in 2011.

“In 2015, we all knew that without the support of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, as the biggest coalition member of the APC, a Buhari Presidency may not be possible and he repeated it again in 2019 so today for us in the North it’s only fair for us to payback this man that has been a lover of the north. This is our pay back time,” he said.

Kwaghe said Tinubu’s presidency is also presenting an opportunity to strengthen the bond of unity between the North and the Southern part of the country and this can only be achieved by fulfilling the former Lagos governor’s age long dream of becoming the President, saying “he has done it for our brother and we will do it for him now.”

Responding to a question on the NorthEast Region being Atiku’s stronghold, Kwaghe said it used to be so because there was no Northeasterner on the ballot but now with the emergence of Senator Kassim Shettima on the ballot, it will no longer be so.

He added that even though Atiku is coming from the region, it is the turn of the south to occupy the Aso Rock villa since the North West is about rounding up the slot of the North and it is only just for power to return to the south and the person in the south is Tinubu.

UNIZIK Biz school launches £100,000 engineering grant project

Business School of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State has launched the Higher Education Partnerships in Sub-Saharan Africa (HEP SSA) ’22/24 programme established and funded by Royal Academy of Engineering, United Kingdom.

The £100,000 grant award is an international collaboration project targeted at building on research and innovation capacity of engineering students of higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa and stimulating ties with industry to increase the scale of impact.

The program titled: ‘Catalysing the Employability and Entrepreneurial Impact of Nigerian Graduate Engineers in the Electricity Industry as a Strategic Way to Improve Access to Electricity in Nigeria’ is also aimed at improving engineering capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa by enhancing the knowledge, skills, capacity and employability of African engineering graduates.

Speaking while launching the project, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Charles Esimone explained that the project is at the core of development in Nigeria and Africa with prevalent key human capacity issues.

He expressed optimism that the project would help to bridge the gap between the town and gown to enable students become self-reliant after graduation.

“We assure the project benefactors that the university will continue to provide enabling environment and supportive atmosphere to ensure a fruitful collaboration.

“We have never failed, and we will not fail in this project because it is not in our character”, he assured.

Earlier, team lead, Dr. Onyeizugbe said the project was informed by a renewed emphasis on production for export, as well as to address structural issues necessary to stimulate the economy and drive the much desired diversification and industrialisation efforts.

He said, “The grant award is aimed at improving engineering capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa by enhancing the knowledge, skills, capacity and employability of African engineering graduates; build on the research and innovation capacity of engineering students of higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa and stimulate ties with industry to increase the scale of impact.

“Following Nigeria’s grossly insufficient electric power generation and even more abysmal transmission and distribution statistics, it remains commonplace and in fact, is now accepted as conventional wisdom, for businesses of all kinds and sizes to have alternate power supply arrangements, usually in form of petrol or diesel-powered electricity generating sets, which they often have to put to use in order to keep their doors open and continue providing their goods and services.”

Lamenting poor and non-existent access to electricity for large part of the nation’s 200 million strong population, Onyeizugbe expressed fears that Nigeria’s erratic public power supply could spell doom and disconnection from civilisation for businesses.

“With rising costs of goods across the board due to spiraling inflation, even those who have electricity generating sets for home power supply may soon be forced to decide between eating and seeing at night. Others do not even have the luxury of such options”, he decried.

Assuring judicious use of the grant, Onyeizugbe called on Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bank of Industry (BoI), Anambra Small Business Agency (ASBA) and other bodies to explore the possibility of gaining access to funds for achieving the objective of making self-employed entrepreneurs of Nigerian Graduate Engineers.

UBS Director, Prof. Emma Okoye said the programme was supported by the Anglo-American Group Foundation and the UK Government, stressing that the pilot scheme had been successfully tested under the Enriching Engineering Education Programme (EEEP) in 2016.

He commended Onyeizugbe and Ifediora for their efforts in driving the research endeavour, expressing hope that the project would address numerous engineering skills deficit in Africa.
