Qatar 2022: Mbappe’s brace takes France to second round

Kylian Mbappe scored twice for France as the defending champions laid down a marker by beating Denmark to become the first team into the World Cup knockout stage.

The 23-year-old forward, France’s youngest scorer in the competition, stole the show once again with second-half strikes to take his side through.

Mbappe had earlier blazed over from 12 yards and forced Kasper Schmeichel into a save with a rising shot.

But the Paris St-Germain star broke the deadlock just past the hour mark, exchanging a fine one-two with Theo Hernandez before stroking in.

Denmark equalised just seven minutes later with their first effort on target as defender Andreas Christensen headed home at the far post after France failed to clear a corner.

Christensen, though, may have counted himself lucky to still be on the pitch at that point after receiving only a yellow card on 20 minutes for dragging back Mbappe, who was looking to run clear.

France keeper Hugo Lloris made a sharp stop to keep out Tottenham team-mate Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s first-time shot while Martin Braithwaite agonisingly fired into the side netting.

But with four minutes left, Mbappe had the final say, sneaking in at the far post to convert Antoine Griezmann’s cross. BBC

Wike lambasts Amaechi over ‘noisy’ project comment

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has lambaste former Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, for saying that the Governor is noisy with his projects.

Wike, who spoke at the inauguration of the Rukpakwulusi/Eliogbolo internal roads on Saturday, said Amaechi’s remarks smacked of envy and malice.

Describing Amaechi as a failure and a liar, Wike said most of the promises the former Governor made to Rivers were not fulfilled insisting that as a minister, Amaechi brought nothing home.

“I heard a few days ago the former Governor of Rivers State said that he did a lot of roads in Port Harcourt, he did not make noise. What is all about the noise? I didn’t see the flyovers. If you did the road mention the road.

“I remember when you built the secondary school in Elekahia Rebisi, every Ambassador in Nigeria, you carried the person to that place. That small school. Then you are asking us what we are celebrating. Shame on to you.

“When your President said look it doesn’t matter, this man is the best as far as infrastructure is concerned. We are celebrating your failures. You told lies to your people. You told them you will give them executive director project, in NDDC, did we get anything?

“I am happy that even your people those following you if they are still remaining, mention one person in a local government an influential person you can pinpoint and say this man is with me. Because your lies have come out open. I am not the one, who said people should leave your party. We have used projects to demystify you and the Federal government knows that you are a bloody liar”.

Wike said it was disheartening as Minister, Amaechi never attracted any project to the State adding that Amaechi’s supporters had begun to desert him because he lacked integrity.

He said: “I’m not the one who say people should leave your party. We have used projects to demystify you and the Federal government. They pointed you as a minister, what did you bring to this State? Even in your community Ubima, you said you are going to bring University of Transportation, is it there? You said you are going to give us narrow guage rail line, have you given us?”

He noted that while as Governor, Amaechi had promised to construct the Saapkenwa-Bori road, Trans-Kalabari road, Andoni-Opobo Unity, Chokocho-Igbodo road to mention but a few but failed to deliver the projects.

He said: “He promised Ogoni people that he is going to do Saapkenwa-Bori road, he did not do it. To the glory of God today, we have done it from Saapkenwa to Kono, dualised with streetlights, the road is not less than 25 kilometres.

“Why will we not celebrate? You promised the Kalabari people, you are going to do Trans-Kalabari road, did you do it.? By the grace of God, this December, we are going to commission the first phase of Trans-Kalabari road.

“Eight years in office, you said you are going to complete Andoni-Opobo Unity road. Did you do it?By the grace of God today, we have completed the Opobo section and we are still working on the Andoni section.”

  • N’Delta group seeks end of N65,000 pay for ex-militants

N’Delta group seeks end of N65,000 pay for ex-militants

The Niger Delta Integrity Group (NDIG) has warned the continued collection of N65,000 monthly stipends by ex-agitators is capable of truncating the intention of the Presidential Amnesty Programme and encourage the Federal Government to terminate it.

It also urged stakeholders in the Niger Delta to cooperate with the Interim Administrator of the PAP, Maj. Gen. Barry Ndiomu(retd) to remove all those who have been trained and empowered but insisting on being paid the N65,000 monthly stipends.

NDiG Convener Dr Boma Horsfall, in a statement in Port Harcourt, expressed concerns those removed from further payment had embarked on street protest to embarrass the new Interim Administrator rather than cooperate with him to ensure the success of the programme.

Horsfall said it was sad and disappointing for the protesters to shamelessly embrace the culture of laziness over the
recent delisting of 2,952 beneficiaries of Phase 2 of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) and stoppage of their stipend.

PAP led by Major General Barry Tariye Ndiomu had cut down on the figure of beneficiaries as part of deliberate moves to check the fraud in the programme over the years.

Justifying the ‘swift’ action of Gen. Ndiomu, the group recalled the aggrieved ex-agitators have been trained and empowered, stating it was time for them to exit the Programme.

Horsfall said: “The Amnesty Pogramme clearly states that those who have been trained and empowered should exit. But unfortunately, the same persons who have been trained and empowered are the ones protesting because they are no longer receiving stipends”.

While urging Ndiomu to remain firm in his resolve to sanitise the PAP to avoid being terminated by the government, the group wondered how the ex-agitators, many of whom have been receiving N65,000 for13 years, have not been able to do anything meaningful with the training and empowerment they got to better their lives.

“If you multiply N65,000 by 12 months (1 year), it gives you N780,000. If you then multiply N780,000 by 13 years ago since the PAP started, you will discover that each of them had received N10,140,000 as stipends. This should have been enough for them to setup themselves meaningfully and look beyond the monthly stipends.

“So the man (Ndiomu) has setup an audit team to investigate the list and ensure that there is transparency in the process,” the NDIG stated.

The group added: “It is aware that some persons with the same BVN are receiving stipends for over 30 people. This has been happening for years and such corruption must stop.”

The NDIG called on those sponsoring these protests to desist, stressing that their actions would further undermine the collective growth of the region.

“Information at our disposal suggests that even persons who are staff of the PAP office that are ex-agitators are also receiving stipends. This is against the Public Service Rules. We encourage the Interim Administrator to investigate and prosecute all those who are involved,” the NDIG added.
