While there’s mutual respect between the duo, many don’t tend to see them together unless it’s on the pitch or in award ceremonies.

However, the two shared the same image as part of a partnership with fashion giants Louis Vuitton.

As a mythologist, I don’t need any religion – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate winner Professor Wole Soyinka has said he doesn’t have need for any religion.

He described himself as a mythologist, an expert in the study of myth (a traditional story, especially one concerning the early history of a people or explaining a natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events).

In a public presentation of his two-volume collection of essays on Sunday, the Nobel laureate
explained though he doesn’t worship deities.

He however he ‘considers them as creatively real’ thus, serving as his companions in his journey; in both the real and the imaginative world.

According to Soyinka: “Do I really need one (religion)? I have never felt I needed one.

“I am a mythologist. I believe that people have a right and cannot help creating mythologies around themselves, around their experiences about what they project from the inner recesses of their minds as answers to questions.

“And so I find nothing wrong with utilising mythologies as part and parcel of my creative warehouse.

“But religion? No I don’t worship any deity. But I consider deities as creatively real and therefore my companions in my journey in both the real world and the imaginative world.”

Court sacks PDP, APC’s Reps candidates in Jigawa, Zamfara

The Federal High Court in Abuja has voided the nomination of two House of Representatives candidates in Jigawa and Zamfara States.

The court, in two judgments, sacked Aminu Kanta as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State and Sani Umar Dan Galadima as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for Kaura Namoda Bimin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara State.

While the court ordered that Alhaji Isa Dogonyaro be declared the APC lawful candidate for Babura/Garki Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, it ordered that the PDP conducts a fresh primary to elect its candidate for the for Kaura Namoda Bimin Magaji Federal Constituency of Zamfara State.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, while sacking Galadima, in a judgment on Monday, held that the serving House of Reps member was not a member of the APC as at when he participated in the primary election held by the PDP.

Justice Ekwo held that Galadima, having not resigned, defected or cross-carpeted from the APC to PDP within the time stipulated by law, was not a lawful member of PDP and cannot stand for any election on its platform.
The judge relied on Section 221 of the 1999 Constitution, section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022 and Article 50 (4) of the PDP to nullify the primary election of the PDP that produced him.

Justice Ekwo held that from the point of law, Galadima ought to have relinquished his APC membership 30 days before the primary election of the PDP before he could qualify as a valid candidate of PDP.

The judgment by Justice Ekwo was on the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/832/2022 by two chieftains of PDP, Muzammil Mohammed Idris and Ibrahim Sani, with Galadima, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the PDP and its Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu as defendants.

In an earlier judgment by Justice Emeka Nwite, the court voided Kanta’s nomination on the grounds that he submitted a false name.

Justice Nwite, in the judgment delivered on November 10, could that Kanta, who had previously claimed his name was Ahmed Mohammed. contested the primary election under a false name.

The judge held that Aminu Kanta gave false information in relation to his name when he claimed that his name is Aminu Kanta and that Anmed Mohammed is his former name in the affidavit in support of personal particulars submitted to the 1st respondent (INEC) as the candidate of the 2nd respondent (APC) for the seat of a member of the House of Representatives.

Justice Nwite proceeded to issue an order disqualifying Kanta from contesting for the seat of Member of the House of Representatives, representing Babura/Gorki Federal Constituency in the 2023 general elections, as a candidate of the APC.

The judge subsequently declared the plaintiff (Dongoyaro) as the candidate of the APC for Babura/Garki Federal Constituency in next year’s election, having scored the second highest number of votes at the primary election conducted by the party for the seat of a member of the House of Representatives, representing Babura/Gorki Federal Constituency.

The judgment was on the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1052/2022 filed by Dongoyaro, with INEC, APC and Kanta as defendants.

Carpenter beats wife to death in Ogun

The Police have arrested a 45-year-old Segun Omotosho Ebenezer, for beating his wife, Olubukola, to death over ownership of a private school in the State.

It was learnt the man, a carpenter, beat his wife, an educationist, to death for establishing a private school in her name instead of the husband’s name.

Detectives arrested the suspect following a complaint at Kemta divisional headquarters on November 14 by the elder sister of the deceased, who reported she was beaten and seriously injured by her husband over a minor disagreement.

The deceased was rushed to Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba Abeokuta by the suspect for treatment but died shortly after hospitalisation.

However, before the deceased passed on, she had sent a voice note to her family members, informing them her husband struck her on the head with a padlock during a misunderstanding.

In the voice note, she also advised her family to hold the husband responsible in the event of death arising from the beating.

Ogun police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, who stated this on Monday, said that when the voice note was played to the suspect’s hearing, he took to his heels when it dawned on him the lethal assault and battery on his wife had been exposed.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that, their incessant quarrel was because the deceased built a private school in the name of herself and the husband, but the husband who is a carpenter had wanted to take over the control of the school which the deceased who was an NCE graduate refused.

“This has been the reason while the suspect has always been beating the deceased ,until the fateful day when he used the iron padlock to hit her on the head, which eventually led to her death,” Oyeyemi stated.

Ogun Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, directed that the suspect be transferred to Homicide section of the state Criminal Investigation Departments for further investigation and diligent prosecution.
