Senate adopts Conference Report on Peace Corps Bill.

The Senate in plenary on Tuesday adopted the report of Conference Committee set up by the two chambers to harmonise the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigeria Peace Corps.

The Committee completed its assignment last Wednesday, which led to the report being laid and adopted by the House of Representatives.

The Harmonised Report of the Committee adopted by the Red Chamber showed that the panel adopted the version of the Bill as passed by the House of Representatives.

Highlight of the adopted report is on clause 38 (1) of the version passed by the Senate which is in conflict with the version passed by the House of Representatives as contained under clause 38 (1).

Whereas the Senate’s version seeks dissolution of the existing Peace Corps of Nigeria and the National Unity and Peace Corps, the House of Representatives version of the Bill solely recommends the dissolution of the existing Peace Corps of Nigeria to be transformed into the Nigerian Peace Corps when assented to by President Buhari.

The Conference report clarified that for a Bill to become an Act of Parliament in Nigeria, it must pass through the two Chambers of the National Assembly, a criteria which the National Unity and Peace Corps Bill could not attain because its Bill was never debated unlike that of the Peace Corps of Nigeria debated and passed by the two chambers.

However, the Bill for an Act to establish the Nigeria Peace Corps expressly provided under clause 38 (8) a window of opportunity for individuals, groups, associations or bodies that show or demonstrate interest to be absorbed as members of the Corps subject to the mandatory basic training and orientation program of the Corps as may be prescribed from time to time when the Bill is signed into law.

Enugu community places curse on killers of LP senatorial candidate Chukwu

The people of Amuri Ancient Kingdom in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Tuesday placed curse on the killers of the son and former senatorial candidate of Labour Party (LP) for the 2023 Enugu East Senatorial District election, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu.

Chukwu was murdered three days to the National Assembly elections on February 22 with the assailants setting him and six other occupants of his Siena vehicle ablaze after shooting them while returning from a political campaign outing in Enugu South local government area of the state.

However,. more than one month after the gruesome murder of the late politician with no news yet on the arrest of the perpetrators, the people of the community decided to take the matter to their ancestors.

The people, comprising mainly the elders and titled men from the four communities that makes up the Ancient Kingdom, led by the eldest men in the locality and two traditional rulers, Igwe Charles Nwoye and Igwe Fidelis Nsiegbu, converged on their ancestral square and placed curses on the perpetrators, and also invoked the spirit of their ancestors to avenge his death.

Igwe Nwoye, who said the people of the town believed strongly in natural justice and philosophy of ‘live and let live’, prayed their ancestors to rise up and bring justice to their late son.

The Monarchs also prayed the gods of the land to ensure that any one involved, directly or indirectly in the unholy act is made to face the consequences of their nefarious conduct, adding that “he who kills by sword, must surely die by sword”

Speaking with newsmen at the event, an emotional younger brother to the late Barr. Chukwu, and Senator-elect, for Enugu East Senatorial zone, Sir Kelvin Chukwu, expressed appreciation to their kinsmen for the love and solidarity they have continued to show to the family since the ugly incident occured.

According to the Senator-elect, the family is yet to recover from the rude shock of the grousome “murder of our late brother, late Barr. Oyibo Chukwu, who was shot dead and his Corpse burnt by his killers.

“So, what our people are doing here today is important because it is in consonance with the tradition of our community, it’s our way of seeking justice through traditional means,” he said.

Why Falz embarrasses government – Falana

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has hinted on why his son, Folarin Falana aka Falz continues to embarrass the government.

Falana said his son’s upbringing didn’t only shape him into the man he is today but is also the sole reason for his actions towards the government.

He explained his young son grew up seeing him being arrested and detained regularly, wondering why it was so and asking if his dad was a criminal.

Speaking at the 2nd anniversary of the Oluyinka Odumakin Lecture in Lagos, Falana said: “One of these guys one day said, ‘Falana talk to your son; he should stop embarrassing the government’. I said which government? You mean that boy who is an adult? Can I give you his number so you can talk to him? But be careful because when that boy was growing up, I was being arrested from time to time. So, the only language he understood was detention, arrest, and the rest of them.

“One day, when that boy was six, he asked his mother, “Our teacher taught us that only criminals were arrested. Is my father a criminal? Why is he always being arrested? And the mother had to say that in Nigeria, under the military, only two sets of people were arrested: Criminal suspects and political suspects. Political suspects are those who are out to expose the criminality of the government. That is what you see going on.”

Falana’s disclosure is coming a few days after his popular rapper son, Falz released a new song titled ‘Yakubu,’ which featured his colleague, Vector.

  • Time to reward sacrifices of late Prince Abubakar Audu is now

Time to reward sacrifices of late Prince Abubakar Audu is now

    By Comrade Idoko Daniel Ogacheko

The history of Kogi State cannot be complete without the Prince of the Niger, Alhaji Prince Abubakar Audu. As the first and second civilian Governor of Kogi State, his remarkable achievements that gave birth to the modern Kogi speak volumes. He was a completely loyal and dedicated party man who never jumped ship in all his political voyages. In 2003, the PDP government in power rigged him out of office with federal might and despite all the enticements and inducements which graduated to oppressions and threats to join the PDP government, he was adamant and remained in the opposition party, the APC to strategize and synergize in order to dislodge them.

In the year 2007, he contested the governorship seat with the incumbent Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris and won but it was rigged again but as a man who believed in the rule of law, he sought redress in court and had the election annulled. That was how the incumbent PDP Governor was removed from office and an Okun man, Mr Clarence Olafemi who was then the Speaker of the house was sworn in as acting Governor in February, 2008, making an Okun man to have a taste of power at the Lugard house.

His ruggedness and doggedness paid off in 2015 when he contested for the governorship seat and was coasting to victory when the cold hands of death struck. That unfortunate and unprecedented occurrence created a lacuna that led to constitutional crises in Nigeria. In one of his campaigns in Okene, he promised to make power shift to the Central flank of the state, not knowing he was going to be the sacrificial lamb to wrestle power from the PDP to APC and shift it to Kogi central as he had promised. By the above analysis, the governorship seat has gone round and should return to the East this time.

This man did so much for the party in the state that the time is ripe for a post humus compensation by considering his worthy son, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, an accomplished investment banker of over 20 years standing who has now be cleared to contest the governorship seat of our dear state. He inherited his father’s political sagacity and capacity as exemplified by various developmental projects initiated and commissioned across the length and breadth of Kogi State, no wonder they say “a Lion must give birth to a Lion”. His character, charisma, commitment, courage and capacity have no equal. As a member of the APC campaign council, he demonstrated unparalleled commitment in all ramifications to ensure the success of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our President–elect. Our people said ” if a man gives you a cow, you will not hesitate to use the hide to make a seat for his child”. In the light of the above, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu should be massively supported to emerge the candidate of our party in the forth coming governorship primaries. He is arguably the most sellable and acceptable candidate with the contacts and connections across the three senatorial district of Kogi State to become our next Governor if given the chance by the grace of God.
Shuaibu Abubakar Audu has not left anyone in doubt about his immense leadership skills because as a man who Rose through the rank as an entry staff to become what he is today, an executive director at the Stanbic IBTC, has indeed shown the leadership traits and skills of his late father, Prince Abubakar Audu of blessed memory who became the father of Kogi modern day developments because of the leadership skills and experience he took with him from the banking sector.Among the siblings of the late patron of the Audu’s political dynasty, Shuaibu is the one today that is an accomplishself made man. He transversed today the banking sector like a colosus and the records are there for all to see.
It is therefore necessary that as we approach the Kogi 2023 gubernatorial primary of the All Progressive Congress(APC) in the state, there is an urgent need for the party to look at the best man to recruit as the guber candidate of the party, a man with the experience and leadership background that rings a bell in the political sphere and that person is Shuaibu Abubakar Audu.Yes, he is the Scion of his late father’s political dynasty and we have seen through history and recent political happenings in major democratic countries in the world that political parties have deliberately devised a means of compensating children of late political heroes with political office to replicate the work of their late father and asking this for the Scion of the late Audu’s political dynasty is not asking too much from his political party. The Kennedy’s, the Ford’s, the Clinton’s and the bush family’s have at one time or the other been compensated with the candidature of their parents, husband’s, brothers or even uncle’s political parties because their names riverberates continuously in the political space of their country because of the impressive performances of their patrons and this should be replicated in the party.
Political dynasties are seen as good in itself in other climes because it do not necessarily mean that if because of the performances of their patrons the party consider their scions for compensation in the form of them having the right of first refusal to be the candidate of a political party then it becomes a sign that the party has lost its emblem of being a meritocracy. This idea is Borne out of the fact that the influence passed over from generation to generation by this political father’s or patrons can be positively put to good use.
We should remember that in our case in Kogi state, we got good governance and most of the development in it’s physicality we now see in the state by and large from the late Prince Abubakar Audu and our state will do exceedingly well if we compensate his son Shuaibu with the candidature of the APC and ultimately the seat of the next governor of Kogi state in 2023.
So many would say that democracies and dynasties are far from incompatible to beat down the importance of this political compensation to the Scion of the late Audu but the buzz in a political household like that of the Audu’s is inevitably of politics and it would be odd if it will not spark an interest in at least someone from the family or his offspring. While other children and members of the late political household of the late Prince Abubakar Audu ventured into other areas of importance in life to make a living, Shuaibu was often taken into consideration about matters of state, politics and leadership when he was little more than a child by his late father or has seen in him the qualities as his political heir.He was alone among the political progeny of his era, at least in sharing the political curiosity of his parents. His desire to go into politics is never prompted merely by his interest in the subject;it is not also to defend the family’s political name but to continue just like his father to giving leadership, direction and development to the good people of Kogi state. He is considered today by many as”Champion Redoubtable”in defence of his father’s political reputation while other of his siblings are concerned about the family’s skin.Shuaibu has never been impelled not so much defensively to keep the family’s tradition going but by it’s history of service to the people of the state.

Finally, if nurture is a useful start to a political career,so too is a well known name.If you happen in Nigeria to be called an Obasanjo,Tinubu, or Buhari, all but the sleepiest voters will think they know something about you.If we are sincere with ourselves, the Audu political family is the best yet in the history of the state because of its impact to the political and economic development of Kogi state.Shuaibu Abubakar Audu is the advocate of a new type of politics dispensation that emphasizes the needs for the total development of Kogi state in all it’s ramification and we must compensate they Audu political family by supporting his Scion, Shuaibu to be the next governor of the state starting with his candidature of the APC in the primary election soon to come.

Ogacheko writes from Lokoja, Kogi State

The s3xual purity advocate said some people are not not necessarily because it’s what they desire but simply because they don’t have the opportunity to engage in s3xual relation with others

Olayode stated this on the ‘Honest Bunch Podcast with media personality, Nedu and co-hosts.

She said: “Some people are just virgins because they’ve not had the opportunity to have s3x not because they want to stay that way.

“Some people practice celibacy because they are looking for the right person that they can sleep with.”

Sharing an experience which left him confused, Nedu stated: “I’ve met somebody that said, ‘I’m celibate now. I’ve been celibate for two years now. I don’t need a man in my life. My dildo and vibrator is my man.’

According to the 33-year-old actress, her critics felt she didn’t deserve to be on the show but years later, God’s grace has rendered their words ineffectual.

She said via an Instagram post: “Just wrapped filming in Houston, TX! It’s just amazing how life is. That year, some people said I didn’t deserve to be on BBN and that I would be irrelevant but look at God!

”Who would have thought that 7 years after moving to Nigeria and 5 years after BBN, someone would be calling me back to America to act in a film. Even I don’t believe it lowkey Grace manifests in different ways.

“And I leave you with these few points of inspiration: Focus on your focus, always be on the lookout for opportunities, shoot your shot and be a decent person.

  • S3x-for-roles can’t be stopped – Ruby Ojiakor

    S3x-for-roles can’t be stopped – Ruby Ojiakor

Actress Ruby Ojiakor has compared the menace of s3x-for-roles in Nollywood to a cartel, expressing doubt anything could be done to end it.

The Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu graduate in an interview with Punch explained s3x-for-roles in the movie industry has been deeply embedded in the core fabric of the system.

She explained individuals those who attempted to report such cases would simply be wasting their time because the offenders would gang up against them since they’re closely knitted.

Orjiakor recalled how she was yanked off a movie she was already shooting as lead actress with popular Ghana actor, Majid Michel for not obliging the marketer’s s3x-for-role demand.

She noted despite having successfully shot some scenes with Majid, the marketer swiftly replaced her with another actress, deleting all her scenes because of refusal to ‘get down’ with him.

“I remember when I was called for a job in Enugu and we shot it for two days. I was supposed to be the female lead character in the movie. The marketer that owned the job wanted to ‘get down’ with me. But, I told him I could not do such a thing”, she explained.

“I thought that since I had started shooting some scenes in the movie, nothing could be done to me and he cannot cancel my scenes, which I shot with Ghanaian actor, Majid Michel, then.

“I also felt Majid would not want to re-act the scenes he had done before. Those factors made me think that the producer’s decision to change me would be fruitless.

“But to my surprise, I was not called to continue my scenes. When I challenged the production manager, he said I should not be angry because someone else had been called to play the role. I was not given any reason for being removed from that project.

“I asked if Majid agreed to re-shoot those scenes and I was told he was paid extra money to do so. That was how I lost a movie role because I refused to sleep with the owner of the movie. The scenes I had already shot were wiped out from that movie. That was a painful experience, but I have moved on,” she said.

Commenting on s3xual advances from movie makers and how reporting to their fellow offenders would be a futile effort, she advised actresses on what to do to overcome the challenge.

Orjiakor added: “I don’t think anything can be done to stop sexual advances from filmmakers. Some people have tried to report them, but it has not yielded any positive result.

“When an actress reports an offender, she is practically setting herself up for a fall. The offenders know themselves, and if one person reports any of them, they would gang up against that actress in the industry, and she would not be getting movie roles.

“It is just like a cartel. The best thing is to train oneself and be firm that even if others are doing it, one will not do it. That was what I did.”

UNIBEN final-year student shot dead in hostel

A final-year male student in the Department of Public Administration of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) popularly known as Mayor, was on Monday night shot dead in his room at Hall 3 on campus by a suspected cultist.

The remains of Mayor were on Monday night moved in an ambulance to the morgue of neighbouring University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH).

UNIBEN’s spokesperson, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire, on Tuesday morning, condemned the brutal killing of the student.

Ehanire said: “The management of UNIBEN has condemned the brutal and sad killing of a final year male student, known mostly as ‘Mayor’ (real name withheld), in the night of Monday, 3rd April, 2023.

“The gruesome shooting occurred in one of the halls of residence, and was carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunman.

“While commiserating with the family and colleagues of the late student, management enjoins other students to be calm, as the police and other security agencies are working hard to fish out and arrest the culprit.

“Management is also working closely with the internal security units, in ensuring that such dastardly incident does not occur again within the university’s premises.”

UNIBEN used to be notorious for cultism, but the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, fought the menace to a standstill, thereby sanitising the university.
