  • Galatasaray Are the Real Winners

    Galatasaray Are the Real Winners

Victor Osimhen has been one of the most talked about players in the summer transfer window. The striker’s future at Napoli was thrown into major doubt, and many of Europe’s top clubs, and clubs from big-spending Saudi Arabia, were said to be interested in acquiring his services. However, the Nigerian has now joined Turkish outfit Galatasaray on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The online sports betting sites offering a market on transfers would have had the likes of PSG, Chelsea and Al-Ahli at the top of their odds lists covering Osimhen’s future. Right up until the end of deadline day in the UK, Chelsea were said to be working out a way to get a deal for the Serie A winner over the line, but in the end, a move failed to materialise.

Osimhen’s failure to secure a move to another club in Europe became more of a concern when it was confirmed he wouldn’t be part of Napoli’s squad for the 2024/25 campaign. This ultimately meant that unless he found a way out of the club, a club he fired to the Serie A title in 2022/23, then he wouldn’t be playing any football until the next transfer window at least.

This would’ve been a disaster for the twenty-five-year-old in terms of his career, so a solution needed to be found. As mentioned, clubs such as PSG and Chelsea in Europe and Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia were thought to be in the running to sign Osimhen. PSG and Chelsea could offer elite-level football in top divisions, and Al-Ahli could present a case financially. But any Turkish team, Galatasaray or any other, would never have been in a position to challenge what was on offer elsewhere.

That was until the Premier League transfer window closed, PSG declared themselves out of the running, and Al-Ahli signed Brentford’s Ivan Tony instead. Couple that with the news that Osimhen was completely out of the picture at Napoli, and it opened the door to what is one of the shock moves of the summer, with a deal taking Osimhen to the Turkish Super Lig happening quickly after the interest was reported.

In this scenario, the real winners are undoubtedly Galatasaray. They’ve acquired one of Europe’s best strikers, a forward that’s suggested to be worth in the region of €100.00m. And they’ve managed to finance the deal by signing him on loan for a season, knowing he will be doing his level best to hit the heights as he will want a permanent switch away from Napoli at the earliest opportunity, with his contract not due to end until 2026.

Galatasaray are in a position where they’ve started to dominate Turkish football once again. They won the Super Lig in 2022/23 and followed that up last season by defending their crown. Having a player of Osimhen’s calibre in their ranks will only increase their chances of making it three titles in a row, especially as he’s more than capable of scoring 20+ goals this season.
