  • Civil servants task FG on adequate sensitization, transparency on NHF

Civil servants task FG on adequate sensitization, transparency on NHF

Mr Isaac Ighure, a former Editor-in-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has called for more enlightenment for civil servants on the National Housing Fund for more workers’ benefit from the scheme.

Ighure, a retired civil servant, in a telephone interview with NAN on Saturday in Lagos, also called for review of mortgage policies due to inflation to accommodate low income civil servants.

He said he retired seven years ago but had to use heavy interest commercial bank loans while in service to purchase a government bungalow in Abuja because of inadequate information.

He lamented that upon completion of 35 years of meritorious service to the nation, he got an NHF refund of about N500 which he joked could hardly buy good quality pepper soup.

He said that the explanation offered for his low refund was that deductions from his NHF contributions were stopped because he became a director.

“Later I gathered that I didn’t ask them to continue deductions because Executive Director level is supposed to be either administrative or political. So, once you climb above director, they stop deductions, I didn’t know about that.

“At the end of the day, what I got after 35 years was five hundred and something Naira, What can N500 buy for you now,’’ he queried.

He said it was difficult during his service years to access Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) loans, adding that “many people are not even aware of what to do under the NHF’’.

“Government needs to create more awareness and maybe educate or enlighten workers on the benefits of the fund.

“It would have been okay to raise the value of monthly deductions but with the value of the salary and the worthlessness of the salary now, the purchasing power is weak, so if you now jerk up the deductions it is going to further weaken the purchasing power of workers.

“Although, the objective is laudable, to enjoy it you have to live to enjoy the benefits. Government has to think of what to do to make it easier for workers to afford their own accommodation,’’ he said.

He lamented the skyrocketing prices of construction materials and land which had further weakened ability of workers to build their homes unlike in the past where civil servants could build gradually.

He called for longer term and low interest mortgages which were used in other advanced countries but not working in Nigeria.

“Workers are heavily disadvantaged when it comes to housing. Every worker needs housing, even when government builds some of these low cost housing, the rich buy them up and give out on rent at exorbitant rates,’’ he said.

Narrating his ordeal, Mr Deji Idowu, a retired broadcaster from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) told NAN the NHF programme of government was shrouded in a lot of secrecy that promoted fraud.

Idowu said he retired from NTA at the age of 57 after 35 years in service but was told he could not get refund of his contributions until his 60th birthday.

He said he Joined NTA in 1983 and his contemporaries who retired at 60 got between N500,000 and N600,000 as refund for their NHF contributions after 35 long years in service.

He said upon turning 60, he returned to collect his refund and was stalled by bureaucracy.

He said he was supposed to process payment through NTA’s in house mortgage institution but was given impossible conditions to make available pay slips of about 10 years and other inaccessible documents.

“Next, they said is that I should go and bring my passbook. I am supposed to have a passbook with NTA. I went there to finance, they said they can’t find my passbook,’’ he said.

He queried why civil servants should be ones to supply records that should be domiciled in the budget and finance ministries of the Federal Government or IPPIS.

He said the NHF deductions from workers salaries, like the pension funds, were not just sitting idle but were being invested and queried why workers did not get profit on contributions.

Idowu, now a lecturer in the University of Lagos, said that NTA staff could not benefit from the FMBN loans because they were told their poor salary structure disqualified them.

The former broadcaster called for more transparency and awareness on the scheme while civil servants should be paid better wages to benefit from NHF.

Some serving federal civil servants who spoke on conditions of anomity, said they did not understand the housing policies of the government.

One of the civil servants said that she benefited recently from a N5 million loan under the FISH scheme operated by the office of the Head of Service.

“We don’t understand anything but whenever they bring forms for any housing loan or scheme I just key into it. I have filled countless forms in the past until the last one that I got N5 million to build my own house.

“They said the FISH (Federal Integrated Staff Housing Programme) scheme is under the office of Head of Service,’’ she said. (NAN)

World Humanitarian Day: 200 persons benefit from free medical outreach in Kogi

An Abuja-based hospital has provided free blood pressure, glucose level checks, ultrasound scanning, medical and surgical consultations, HIV screening, malaria and cancer screening for more than 200 persons in Kogi.

The one-day medical outreach was conducted at Ofakaga, a community in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.

It was organised in collaboration with the Silver Cross Hospital, Pet Fernandes Foundation and St. Pius X Catholic Church, Ofakaga.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Patrick Ezie, said that the outreach was organised as part of activities to commemorate this year’s World Humanitarian Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the day, globally celebrated on Aug. 19,
is aimed at honouring humanitarian workers who risk everything to help people in need.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “It takes a village”.

He added that it was also organised to complement government’s efforts in the provision of qualitative healthcare.

“Our aim is to touch lives irrespective of the part of the country the beneficiaries come from. We want people in rural communities to have access to free medical services as this.

“We are out to serve the people, especially the less- privileged. We have observed that many people were compelled by financial constraints to treat their health issues with levity.

“All these are geared towards ensuring that lives are touched and to ensure that everyone, irrespective of their social class has access to quality health care services,” he said.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed happiness at the opportunity to receive such free healthcare services.

They appreciated the organizers for the kind gesture.

Peter Okoye aka Mr P, one of the famous singing twin brothers, has chided those who criticised him for living luxuriously abroad.

The 40-year-old musician had displayed his luxurious Atlanta home in a video, showcasing its opulent interior decor.

Others compared him to politicians who buy properties overseas, invest in real estates rather than invest in their homeland.

Reacting, Peter Okoye declared that many Nigerians needed serious deliverance.

He argued that instead of castigating politicians who spend the money generated by the hard work of taxpaying citizens to purchase homes abroad and send their kids to the best schools abroad, they are condemning him in the comments section for celebrating his mansion.

  • ‘AbdulRazaq’s investment in basic education unmatched’

‘AbdulRazaq’s investment in basic education unmatched’

Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s heavy investments in basic education are another first in the history of the State since 1967, Prof. Raheem Adaramaja said on Thursday.

Adaramaja, who is the Chairman of Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board (KWSUBEB), spoke in Ilorin at the Grand Finale of the Radio Quiz Competition organised for Junior Secondary School Students in the Sixteen LGs of Kwara State.

Ekiti and Offa local government schools emerged the First and Second Prize Winners, while Irepodun LG settled for the third place.

“We have every reason to thank Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his love for us and interest in the development of basic education in the State. It is on record that his investment in basic schools is, to our knowledge, the highest since the creation of Kwara State in 1967. He is indeed the father of basic education,” he said.

Adaramaja said the pride of any society depends largely on the structure, status and achievements of its basic education, saying Kwara under AbdulRazaq has heightened the standards and glory of basic education through heavy investments in school infrastructure and human capital development.

“You will agree with me that Kwara State has achieved immensely under Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq in our basic education which has therefore transformed its standards and restored the public confidence in public schools. This is evident in the way our pupils/students are making us proud in all the competitions they have participated,” the Chairman added.

The close session of the competition that was broadcast live on Radio Kwara, was well-attended by government officials, parents and education stakeholders, some TIC Chairmen and other dignitaries, including Chairman Kwara Assembly Committee on Education, Hon. Baba Soliu Boriya; Special Assistants on Religion Affairs (Islam) Ibrahim Danmegoro, and Rev. Timothy Akangbe (Christianity); representative of the State Commissioner for Communications Dr. Fatima Amuda; State NUT Chairman Comrade Oyewo Bashir; and PTA Chairman and first Makama Ilorin Alhaji Ibrahim Oniye.

Among the royal fathers in attendance were Owa of Eruku Oba Busari Ayinde Olarewaju; Oloke-Opin of Oke-Opin Land Oba E. D Ajibola; and Asolo of Isolo Opin Oba Sunday Raphael.

Adaramaja said the quiz was put together to celebrate the participating schools and students who have, for the past five months, worked so hard to attain academic excellence, describing them as another good ambassadors of basic schools of the State.

Adaramaja, who recalled the last Presidential Schools Debate Championship in Lagos, where Kwara Contingents clinched the first position, said there are several instances to prove the efficacy of the government’s investments in the sector since the last three years.

“Let me inform this gathering that the Governor has approved sums of N500,000, N300,000 and N100,000 as prizes for the First, Second and Third positions respectively,” he said.

He thanked the Governor for the unflinching support and every prize he gives out to encourage hard work and excellent performance among pupils of government-owned schools in the State.

The Governor had also given the Champions of the last Presidential Schools Debate competition held in Lagos Scholarship Award to University level apart from handing to the students the cash prize of #500,000 each for making the State proud.

The government, at the grand finale, also awarded N100,000 to Aishat Zakari, another Junior Secondary School student who turned out victorious at the recent National Quiz Competition on Mathematics, an event that took place in Abuja.

She was declared the Queen of Mathematics, having come First in the North Central and Sixth in the whole Nigeria in that Competition.

Kwara NUT Chairman, Comrade Oyewo Bashir, said the quiz has succeeded in showcasing the excellent performance of teachers in the classrooms, applauding the organisers and the present administration for their commitments so far.

Callers on the live programme took turns to hail the school pupils for exhibiting talents that are symbolic of a positive development in the public school system in Kwara, urging the present administration to continue in that direction.

  • ‘No matter how close it seems, Nigeria can never crash’

‘No matter how close it seems, Nigeria can never crash’

The General Overseer of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries (GOMERM) Lagos Dr James Akanbi spoke with reporters on national issues ahead of the Zion 2022 Power Conference of the church, which ends today. Excerpts:

You clocked 60 in January. How does hitting the milestone feel?

I thank God that I was able to clock 60. It was a great joy for me. It was not about the age but the impact the Lord has enabled me to make in life at 60. Life is not about duration but a donation. It is not how long you lived but how much impact you made. I thank God for the few achievements I can point at 60. It is not just looking at the numerical strength of the people around me in ministry. By the special grace of God, I have some thousands of people around me in ministry in about eight countries of the world where the flag of God’s Mercy Revival Ministries is flying. I thank God for the pillars He has raised for the ministry. There is a son that will always be a source of joy to me in the ministry. The very first day we started the ministry he came in a drunkard but today he is a regional overseer in the ministry. He is anointed and soundly mature in the Lord and still growing. I sent him to several Bible Schools. He is like a trophy I am looking at in this ministry.

If you were a civil servant, you would be winding down. How soon do you plan to slow down after hitting 60?

If you are on the right route and you slow down other people will overtake you. When you are at the centre of the will of God you cannot slow down. Being at the centre of God’s will gives one joy to move on. Age should actually ginger you to do more. I look at Noah when he was commissioned. I look at Papa Kumuyi; a wonderful mentor who I first met in 1981 as his student at the International Bible Training Centre (IBTC) of the Deeper Life Bible Church. Sitting down with him, I was able to see what he looks at the future to be like, and I said to myself, I want to pick a future like his. If at 80 he is saying he feels 30, what should a small boy like me say? When you are at the centre of the will of God for your life you will definitely have great future for your life; you get going. You don’t want to slow down because you see what God called you to do manifesting.

The theme for the conference is Higher Ground. What informed it?

We have been on a particular level for almost 23 years now. When the Lord spoke to John, the Revelator, He told him come up! When God summons you to come up, it means He has a new agenda for you. When God summons you in that form it means He wants to raise the boundary. He wants to show you things you have never seen. He wants to restructure you and your system. He wants to do a new configuration for the system you are heading and the lives around you.

Higher Ground Life, as the theme of this year’s Zion Power Conference, which I received from the Lord, is a higher level of life. It is doing things in another and different way. It is life becoming better than where we are now. It is the ministry work becoming more effective and more efficient. God is actually saying there is a better thing up there, come and see it! I will deposit it into you and you go out there to manifest it. That is what the conference is all about.

What is your take on the church’s involvement in active politics hitherto avoided ahead of 2023?

With the situation that is playing out now in Nigeria politics and governance, the Nigerian Church and Christians generally will be forced to get into active politics. There is Christian party in some countries. In Nigeria politics, it will take a very solid calling to get there. Calling is so powerful that it makes way for itself if it is genuine and the instruction from God is clear. If you have a calling into politics, definitely you will make it. But if you are not called, you will be cursed. We had some Christians in politics in the past but they messed them up. With the way it is going, we may end up having a Christian Party in Nigeria someday.

With the cloud of fears, agitations, uncertainties and religion apprehension, do you foresee Nigeria crashing someday?

Nigeria cannot crash. I believe God has not given up on this nation. Nigeria’s present situation is not as worse as the situation in Ezekiel 37 when the people were completely hopeless but God still raised a great army out of them. Yes, at the moment Nigeria is facing a lot of problems so serious that Nigerians do not trust one another anymore. The politics of religion has never come to the front burners as it is now.

There is no doubting the fact that Nigeria is treading the path of crisis with the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket. But I believe God knows how to have His way. I believe the numbers of the righteous people in Nigeria are more than those in Sodom and Gomorrah.

I believe there are some people calling on God with a very pure heart for Nigeria. God will still help this nation. I believe Nigeria will not crash. I often say that we cannot expect the world to become better. The situations in Nigeria and in all other countries of the world will continue running like this till the End time but individuals can call on God to rectify their personal situations.
