Spouses not doing anyone favours with house chores – Mary Njoku

Actress Mary Njoku has addressed spouses on the necessities of ‘partnership’ within the home front.

The film producer, who recently marked a decade of union with her hubby in Maldives, argued no spouse is doing the other a favour by helping out with house chores or even taking care of the kids.

She explained that is so because the house/home, kids and everything else they share together belong to them but noted you can appreciate each other for being great parents.

Enlightening the wives, she said: “OMG! My husband is so humble! He helps me with the kids’ homework! He even helped me feed junior yesterday!
“Dear friend, your husband isn’t helping YOU with the kids. They are HIS kids too. He is just being a great DAD. Appreciate him for that.

“A family friend cleared his plate after eating. And his wife was showering him with praises for helping HER. HIS own plate o. Na WE be the cause of OUR problems.”

Addressing the men, she continued: “And dear men, your wife isn’t HELPING you raise your children. They are hers too. Learn to appreciate her for being a great MUM.”
Njoku said since marriage is a partnership, the only ground on which you can praise or even worship your spouse is when they do something for you ‘personally’, like prepare meals just for you, wash your clothes etc.

“If/when she supports the household financially, she isn’t doing you a favour, it’s her home too. Appreciate / thank her for being a great PARTNER.

“In PARTNERSHIP, nobody is doing anybody a favour. It’s an agreement to work together and enjoy together

“But, if your SPOUSE cooks for YOU (not the kids o) or washes YOUR clothes (not una bedsheet o) or does any personal thing for you, or even clears YOUR plate, (not his own o); then he/she is doing it for YOU. Worship am if you like! He/she deserves it!!!! Selflessness no easy,” the mother of three added.

He said that he is used to living by himself even though he is from a polygamous family.

“I’ve grown uncomfortable in Level one and could do with a change of scenery. The fights, and being in everyone’s face the whole time, is taking a toll on me and I would prefer to be in Level two,” he said.

Doyin tried to talk him out of his decision by saying that the situation in Level two is not better, since Amaka confided in her about wanting to be swapped to Level 1, because her Level two Housemates are constantly fighting. She advised Deji to ask Biggie for a switch over, but cautioned him against being ungrateful. “You have to find a way to make the most of being in Level 1 because you are not guaranteed a better experience in Level two.”
