Protesters demand NSA, Defence Minister sack

Scores of protesters under the auspices of the Guardians of Democracy and Development Initiative (GDDI) on Monday took to the streets of Abuja to demand the sack of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd) and Minister of Defence Minister, Maj. Gen. Bashir Salihi Magashi (Rtd) for alleged incompetence.

Their spokesman, Comrade Danesi Momoh, told President Muhammadu Buhari to sack the duo with immediate effect.

Flanked by Co-convener of the group, Mr Igwe Ide-Umanta, Momoh said: “We wish to start with the statement credited to the National Security Adviser himself, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd), where he was quoted as saying: “people are getting tired and are beginning to gravitate into other means of self-help.

“Truth is that Nigerians are not just getting tired; we are suffocated, frustrated, threatened, apprehensive and completely uncertain about our safety and that of our loved ones. We cannot continue this way, and both the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Minister of Defence Know that.

“We have had to tolerate a National Security Adviser who has no record of achievement in his seven years in office. And right under his supervision, intelligence has been ignored (as has now been exposed by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives).

“There is no proactivity and no evidence of any practical input from him in addressing National Security before its total collapse status.

“On the part of the Minister of Defence, he has no innovation, inspiration and the right professional touch to lead such important Ministry at a critical time like this.

” In fact, he appears too frail, tired and out of touch with contemporary security realities and defence strategies. Thus he has no business being there. Mr. President should show mercy to the citizens and deploy a better hand and brain.

“Back to the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd), we must also note that his statement as quoted above suggests that he too is tired, frustrated and has no idea of what to do.

“He has never done anything before and cannot be expected to do anything other than the same seven years old recycled rhetoric. Things can only worsen under such abysmally poor NSA.

“He recall what he described as damning revelation of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase, that 44 security reports were forwarded from the Department of State Security (DSS) and other Intelligence Agencies, before the attack on the Kuje Custodial Centre.

“That statement remains unchallenged till date. And the question is: “who coordinates the intelligences from the Security Agencies? And who processes them and see to their implementation?

“Since the answer is the NSA, what is Maj. Gen. Monguno still doing there in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA)? Is he a National Security Adviser or a National Insecurity Adviser?”

Why movie stars are kidnap targets, by Hilda Dokubo

Veteran Hilda Dokubo has blamed some of her colleagues for selling off the wrong ideas about Nollywood acts on social media.

According to the thespian, some of her colleagues portray flamboyant lifestyles on social media, giving off the impression that every film star truly lives in affluence when it is not true.

Dokubo made her position known via her Instagram page as she sorrowed over the N71M ransom being demanded by the kidnappers for two of her colleagues, Cynthia Okereke and Cornel Clemson who were recently abducted.

She wondered how the families and friends of the abducted actors would be able to raise the ransom.

She said: “Nollywood is about moving from one level of begging for alms to save an ill or dying colleague to now facing the worse of fears over two of their colleagues facing God knows what in the hands of kidnappers.

“Where will we turn if not the public using our social media platforms? Well…Finally, the kidnappers have made their demands. They want money! 100k US dollars! From where? Unfortunately, they misjudged the financial status of the actors they kidnapped! And think that as it is in the movies that are how it is in real life. What a life.

“Where will we get one hundred thousand US dollars from? God save all of us from this pain and give us your grace for this period. I know some actors paint the wrong picture on social media all the time but it is only in line with the “Show” part of SHOWbiz. Hopefully, you’ll understand what I mean.

“I am pained because I know these two personally, have worked with them and I know the truth of how it is with them. Just been asking myself one question all day, “How much does an average actor make in Nigeria?”

The movie stars were kidnapped while returning from a set at Ozalla town in Enugu State last Friday.

Students kick as gunmen abduct LAUTECH final year student

Students of Ladole Akintola University (LAUTECH) have kicked against the abduction of a final year student, Rachael Opadele by gunmen.

Opadele of the department of Fine and Applied Arts with matric no 170886 was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Friday in a hotel at Aaba , a community close to the institution.

The Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution charged the Federal and State governments to secure her release without further delay.

They also demanded solution to incessant kidnapping and raping of female students in the institution.

A statement by the union President, Adeboye Anuoluwapo and Secretary, Opaleke Ibrahim, explained Racheal was working at the hotel due to the ASUU strike.

The statement reads: “It is with heavy heart that we write this openly to Federal Government Presidency, Oyo State Government, and all Nigerians.

“This is a cry of bereavement from over 35,000 students of Ladoke Akintola University Of Technology, Ogbomoso to the Federal Government Presidency, Oyo State Government, All Security Operatives in Nigeria and Oyo State, The Obas, and the Management of LAUTECH over the abduction of Rachael by unknown gunmen known as bandits in our dear country, Nigeria, to help free and save Rachael.”

“To Oyo State Government and our University Management, please help us beef up the security around the University Community. We can tell you that the security and safety of the LAUTECH Community are in great jeopardy.

“Now is the time to act before it’s too late. For the past few weeks, we have been experiencing several robberies and other hideous acts. Now, one of us is kidnapped. Who knows who is next? Before these evil people make a job to be kidnapping students.

“Our hearts are grieved by the unending sorrow bequeathing our fellow students by the criminals (rapists, thieves, looters, kidnappers, and murderers) by unknown gunmen that have grown wings and spread across the country otherwise known as “Bandits”.

“It is obvious now that ruthless kidnapping and abduction is assuming not only endemic shape but also becoming a burgeoning lucrative and money-spinning venture with many invisible profiteers.

“How much longer should we continue to bow to the wanton sacrilege meted out by these marauding villains called kidnappers? The Presidency has to bring forth the most effective and lasting solutions to these societal ills before the situation degenerates into an intractable phase. The time is now, and it is now or never for the Presidency to pursue the much-needed counter-kidnapping operation.

“We can no longer walk or move freely, sleep conveniently, travel, or do anything without fear of being abducted or kidnapped, robbed, raped, or maimed within or outside our University Community.”

  • NNPP will reinstate sacked traditional rulers in Kaduna State if elected – Hunkuyi

NNPP will reinstate sacked traditional rulers in Kaduna State if elected – Hunkuyi

Sen. Suleiman Hunkuyi, 2023 governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kaduna State says he will reinstate traditional rulers sacked by the current government if he wins.

The sitting Gov. Nasir El-Rufai’s administration sacked 313 district heads and 4,453 village heads in June 2017 as part of restructuring of traditional chiefdoms in the state.

Part of the restructuring was to reduce the burden of a bloated payroll imposed on local government councils by the continued engagement of the district and village heads.

Addressing a news conference on Saturday in Kaduna, however, Hunkuyi said he would reinstate the village and district heads the moment he got into office.

He said this was because of the critical roles they would play in his government which includes maintaining harmony and ensuring security in communities.

He added that the NNPP would also reverse the recent increase in school fees in state-owned tertiary institutions, stressing that public education institutions were not for profit making.

He expressed concern over the more than N307 billion debt profile of the state, which he said could be higher with the continued devaluation of the naira against the dollar.

He said that if successful at the poll, the NNPP government would reprioritise the state’s budget to address growing insecurity in the state.

“We will engage communities to see how our villages can contribute to existing security architecture in the state to ensure the safety of lives and property.

“We will realign the budget to address insecurity, youth unemployment and increase investments in agriculture to create jobs and ensure food security,’’ he said.

Hunkuyi expressed optimism that the NNPP would take over power in Kaduna State in 2023.

He explained that the party was conceived to address existing problems confronting the state and the country.

He said that the party provides a platform for all-inclusive governance that would take residents of Kaduna State to a new horizon where all Nigerians live as one.

The candidate also told newsmen that NNPP’s agenda was based on fair play, inclusive and people-oriented governance without sectionalism on grounds of religion or ethnicity.

“Our party will ensure fair representation, particularly for people of southern Kaduna who have been marginalised over the years in the governance space and in terms of development projects.

“What NNPP stands for is all-inclusive governance that stands for each and every segment of the state,’’ he said.

Hunkuyi added that the party would contest 54 political seats in Kaduna State from House of Assembly seats to House of Representatives, Senate, and the governorship seat.

He identified the seats as 34 state assembly seats, 16 House of Representatives seats, three Senatorial seats, and the governorship and deputy governorship seat.

The candidate said that political space in Kaduna was widely open for NNPP to take over in 2023 because of the humane and all-inclusive leadership style of the party, which resonated with the people. (NAN)
