  • APGA Founding Father; Chekwas Okorie, No Longer Our Member – State Chairman

APGA Founding Father; Chekwas Okorie, No Longer Our Member – State Chairman

The Abia chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has said that the founding National Chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie, is no longer a member of the party.

Speaking to Journalists in Umuahia, the state on Saturday, the Chairman of the party, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, said this while reacting on who the authentic national leadership of the party is.

According to the state Chairman, Okorie “was expelled in 2003 for anti-party activities and embezzlement of party funds.

“And a few years after his expulsion, he floated the United Peoples Grand Alliance in 2012,” he said.

Ehiemere further said that Okorie later joined the All Progressives Congress but did not last long in the party.

The APGA chieftain said that it was preposterous for Okorie to turn around to claim to be the party’s Presidential flag bearer.

He said: “For record purposes, Chekwas Okorie is not a member of APGA let alone being its presidential candidate.

“He has lost his political value and credibility as far as Nigerian politics is concerned.

“All his efforts now is to see how he can eke a living by joining Chief Edozie Njoku to parade themselves as the National Chairman and Presidential Candidate of APGA, respectively.

“They are both aware that their claims are false and fraudulent.”

Ehiemere described Okorie and Njoku as “political impostors, who want to reap where they have not sown”.

He said that Chief Ike Oye and Prof. Peter Umeadi remained the authentic National Chairman and Presidential Candidate of the party, respectively.

“APGA has only one presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections, Prof. Peter Umeadi, who emerged from a special national convention of the party held in Abuja in June,” he said.

Ehiemere said that the name of Okorie, who hails from Alayi in Bende Local Government Area of Abia, “is not in the APGA’s ward register”.

He, therefore, warned the public to beware of Okorie and Njoku, alleging that they were being used by the enemies of APGA to cause confusion and distract Oye.

He expressed the party’s unalloyed loyalty to Oye’s chairmanship.

He said that his leadership had raised APGA’s political profile, making it the first and only political party in the country to own a National Secretariat in Abuja.

“Therefore, Abia APGA passes a vote of confidence on the National Working Committee of our great party, led by Chief Victor Oye.

“This is to appreciate the committee for its resilience, doggedness and astuteness in piloting the affairs of the party, which we hope to bring victory to us in 2023,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ehiemere and the party’s Legal Adviser, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwokoro, have described the alleged Supreme Court decision, declaring Njoku as the National Chairman of the party, as “non-existent”.

“No such Supreme Court decision exists anywhere.

“There is no such judgment by the apex court.

“It all emanated from their fraudulent intentions to cause confusion in the party,” Nwokoro said.

He challenged Njoku to institute a contempt suit against APGA, Oye and INEC, if he was sure of any such Supreme Court’s decision.

“When the decision of a court is flouted or disobeyed, the option left to the litigant is to institute a case of contempt of court,” Nwokoro said.

  • Nigeria pledges commitment to reducing plastic pollution of the marine

Nigeria pledges commitment to reducing plastic pollution of the marine

Nigeria has pledged its commitment to an international, legally binding, instrument to reduce the menace of marine plastic pollution from land-based sources and activities.

President Buhari gave the assurance in a statement delivered on his behalf by the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor, at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference, in Lisbon, Portugal.

Highlighting Nigeria’s effort at ensuring the health and sustainability of oceans, seas and marine resources, the President said a national policy on plastic pollution and the road map on tackling solid and plastic waste management has been formulated and established.

The President, who lauded the United Nations for leading the process of effective ocean governance, said Nigeria had mainstreamed ocean management into the economy, constituting a Presidential Committee on Sustainable Blue Economy.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President also announced that Nigeria has embarked on the creation of two marine protected areas.

President Buhari reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to participating constructively in the ongoing negotiations for various multilateral agreements, including on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

‘‘The entire Southern border of Nigeria is the Atlantic Ocean with a coastline of about 853km being the longest in the West African region.

‘‘It is endowed with enormous biodiversity resources such as the freshwater and mangrove forest ecosystems with diverse species of fauna and flora.

‘‘We acknowledge the fact that a healthy ocean and coastal environment is key to sustainable development. We must therefore conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.

‘‘The ocean is key to the global economy, with an estimated 40 million people projected to be employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

‘‘Our oceans and seas are repositories of tremendous wealth, in terms of natural capital, ecosystem services, living and non-living resources. We are conscious of the fact that our maritime and aquatic resources are critical for the livelihoods of our people.

‘‘Hence, our commitment to the Africa Union 2063 Agenda and the attainment of United Nations SDG 14,’’ he said.

The national statement delivered on the President’s behalf also stressed the need for more scientific partnerships and knowledge sharing to protect humanity’s common ocean heritage.

‘‘The science tells us that in order to stop the downward spiral we are witnessing in the ocean, we must fully and highly protect at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030, and dramatically strengthen the management of human activities in the other 70%.

‘‘This must be reflected in the text we negotiate here as well as in upcoming negotiations planned in December 2022 at the upcoming Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) of the Conference of Parties (COP).

‘‘Nigeria is a member of the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People and the Blue Leaders Campaign.

‘‘The global community needs to agree to the effective protection of 30% of the global ocean by 2030 at the CBD COP in December, and a robust high seas treaty that doesn’t simply endorse the status quo, but the one that ensures all nations manage their activities in the high seas to prevent significant effects on the ocean.

‘‘These two steps will go a long way in restoring the health and resilience of our oceans”, the statement said.

PDP’s reactions to hike in BRT fair

The Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Hon Hakeem Amode has faulted the proposed increase in the Fare for BRT buses in the state.

There is now an additional flat rate of N100 on all trips within the state that will take effect from July 13 .As a result of this hike , a trip from Ikorodu to TBS will now cost N600 naira instead of N500 naira; Berger to Ajah will now increase to N700 from N600 naira ,this will also affect other routes within the state.
The APC lead government blame the hike in the pump price of diesel from N187 to N830 Naira ,and the unavailability of spare parts for the increase.

According to Hon. Amode, with the crippling economic situation, brought about by this same government’s ineptitude , being experienced by Lagosians on a daily basis, the Lagos State government has shown lack of compassion and total disregard for the plight of the citizens of the state.

Now is not the time for any form of increment, as the people of the state have suffered enough under this unsympathetic government.

Hon.Hakeem Amode further reiterated that the proposed increase be shelved so as not to worsen the citizens’ situation in the face of dilapidated infrastructure, insecurity, hunger, rise in crime, among others being experienced by the people of the state.

NPC trains 99 enumerators for Trial Census in 9 Enugu LGAs

About 99 enumerators are currently undergoing 12 days training ahead of the National Population Commission (NPC) Trial Census in nine Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Enugu State.

Opening the training in Enugu on Friday, the Federal Commissioner Representing Enugu State in NPC, Chief Ejike Ezeh, said that the nine LGAs had selected three council areas each from the three senatorial zones for the exercise.

Ezeh said Enugu East Senatorial Zone comprises Nkanu West, Enugu North and Isiuzo council areas.

Enugu North Senatorial zone includes Udenu, Uzo-Uwani and Igboeze council areas while Enugu West Senatorial Zone included Ezeagu, Oji River and Udi council areas.

According to him, 7,718 Enumeration Areas have been selected for the trial to test run suitability and readiness for the actual census in 2023.

The commissioner explained that the exercise would be used to test the new technology and innovations in the census enumeration both in terms of e-recruitment of personnel and use of specially configured computer tablets for the exercise.

“The selection of the coverage areas has been scientifically and purposely carried out to achieve the objectives of the Trial Census.

“The selection of samples from all states of the federation and the FCT is expected to yield nationwide information on state-specific issues that may arise for the next census and come up with possible solutions for addressing the challenges.

“However, some states have been selected for full LGA enumeration to test challenges around complete coverage under various scenarios such as in hard-to-reach areas, special populations, and rural-urban settings,” he said.

Ezeh noted that “the Trial Census is not the actual enumeration of persons for the 2023 Population and Housing Census”, adding that the outcome of the trial would not form the basis of the 2023 Census.

“Data generated during the Trial Census will not be used to arrive at figures for the 2023 Census which is going to be zero-based and from information collected in April 2023,” he added.

The commissioner called on stakeholders and the general public, especially residents, security agencies and the media, to support the Trial Census to ensure its success in Enugu State.

The Chairman of Enugu North LGA, Chief Emeka Onunze, assured the NPC of the council’s resolve to support the Trial Census and ensure its huge success through massive rural publicity.

Onunze, whose council area is selected for the exercise, lauded NPC for selecting it for the national exercise, adding that it would further cement relationship between the commission and council.

“We are ready to ensure that the exercise moves on smoothly without any hitch in the council area,” Onunze who was represented by the Secretary of the council, Mr Abuchi Ugwu, said.

One of the trainees for the Trial Census, Miss Chioma Ani, said she had learnt census methodology, planning and operations, use of digital maps and Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) among others.

PVC: INEC worries over low registration in Katsina State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Katsina State has expressed concern over the poor turnout of residents registering for the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) in the newly established 1,750 polling units.

Alhaji Jibril Zarewa, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Katsina.

He said that one year after the commencement of PVC registration, there was a poor turnout of people for registration in the newly established polling units.

According to Zarewa, “In May 2022 when we did analysis, we realised out of the 1,750 newly established polling units, about 1,200 units did not have more than 50 people who registered in each of them.

“This registration involved transfers. Some of the polling units have zero registration, some have only one, some five while some have not more than 50 people who registered.

“Although this can be attributed to the suspension of telecommunication networks in 17 of the 34 Local Government Areas (LGAs) for about five months due to the security problem.

“Since the resumption of the exercise in March, out of the 1,750 polling units created, about 1,200 don’t have up to 50 people that registered in each of them.

“We are appealing to the people of those areas where the new polling units were created to go and register, as INEC is always ready for them.

“The reasons for the creation of additional polling units is to serve the areas and decongest the congested polling units through the transfer of their polling units, he said.

He disclosed that initially there were 4,902 polling units in the state but with the creation of the additional ones, there are 6,652 polling units at present.

Zarewa explained that the collection of the PVCs is appreciable, saying towards the 2019 election, INEC had to stop the issuance of the PVCs.

“As at that time, we had about three per cent of our cards collected, which means out of the 3.230 million PVCs, we had, just about 50,000 not collected.

“As of Jan. 12, 2022, we have taken 53,000 from the headquarters, and just a few days ago, we have taken an additional 20,000 for people who made corrections.”
