PSC sets up investigative panel on bribery scandal

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has set up an investigation panel on the alleged $10, 000 promotion bribery scandal.

A statement on Thursday by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani reads:: “The attention of the Police Service Commission has been drawn to a publication by Sahara Reporters of Tuesday, April 11th 2023 on the above story titled “Exclusive: Bribery Scandal Rocks Nigeria Police Service Commission As Officers Allegedly pay $10,000 to get Promotion.

“According to the story, a nebulous group parading as aggrieved Officers of the Nigeria Police Force alleged that the Commission gave special promotions to junior Officers above senior ones after allegedly collecting bribe of a sum of $10,000.

”The said aggrieved Officers in a statement by one Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo (no rank indicated) on behalf of other Officers: “urged the Presidency to probe the corrupt practices in the Police Force.

“The statement elaborated that the Commission wishes to state that it does not sell promotions in the Nigeria Police Force and will not start now when a deliberate effort is being made to reposition and reinvigorate the Nigeria Police Force, especially with the assumption of duty of Dr. Solomon Arase as Chairman of the Commission.

“As at the time of filing this report, the Commission has not formally received any formal petition or complaint on this allegation so the said Mr.Chijioke Okonkwo who posed and signed off on behalf of other Officers forgot that he is a serving Police Officer and did not indicate his rank. He forgot the line of communication for Officers of the Nigeria Police Force which also guides the Public Service.

“The Commission therefore wishes to state as follows; That any one with evidence on these allegations should, as a matter of urgency, forward same to the Commission as any one found culpable will be dealt with in line with the laws of the land.

“That the Commission has also set up a panel of investigation, comprising of both Members of the Commission and that of the Nigeria Police Force to investigate these allegations. Aggrieved Officers should avail themselves of the existence of this investigative Panel and come forward with substantiated proof that could aid the investigation”.

The Commission insists that those found wanting in the course of the investigation will face the full wrath of the law.

PSC said: “However, the Commission warns that it will not tolerate any frivolous and fictitious media claims as Officers and Men of the Police should be abreast and conversant with approved lines of communication. The Commission directs the Police to fish out the true identity of the said Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo for interrogation.

“At a time the Commission Chairman is working hard to harmonize and improve the services of both the Commission and the Police, the Commission can ill afford this kind of distraction. Barely one week in Office, the Commission Chairman has met with the Inspector General of Police and his Management team; the national leadership of the Police Community Relations Committee and on Wednesday, April 12th, met with retired Inspectors General of Police. His desire to bring sanity, peace and unity in the Police sub-sector is already receiving desired results”.

  • Millennials rapidly investing in bright future of Real Estate, says CEO UVEST Babalola.

Millennials rapidly investing in bright future of Real Estate, says CEO UVEST Babalola.

Recent trend in Nigeria shows that Millennials are becoming more aware of the array of opportunities in real estate and investing in their future, the CEO of UVEST, a real estate firm in Lagos, Dr Philip Babalola, has stated.

In a statement, Babalola pointed out the report from their company that showed over 80% of allocated land during “Uvest Metro Allocation”, were mostly purchased by youths within the 20-29 age bracket.

“The highest amount of investment at UVEST is recorded to have been made by young folks.

“This is not to say that the young folks are indeed gaining more investment knowledge alonebbut that they are also very open to and willing to try out new tech innovations that equip them to become real wealth creators. An example is the co-ownership tech platform that UVEST promises to offer,” he explained.

He added: “When it comes to purchasing properties, starting early provides the chance to build equity over time.

“If you buy a home at Ketu-Epe now, ten or twenty years in the future, you have very likely built up significant equity through loan payments and property appreciation.

“By investing in properties now, you have the chance to build up significant equity. This can pave the way to impressive, high-value portfolios over time”.

Speaking further on the benefits of early investment in real estate, he stressed: “Another benefit of investing at a young age is the chance to build up a network that will last a lifetime. Your network will be crucial to securing financing, finding contractors, and landing deals in real estate. Young investors ready to hit the ground running can start building connections that will benefit them throughout life”.

“Wealth creation and diversification have made Nigerian millennials see real estate as a tangible and viable investment option to build wealth and diversify their investment portfolios beyond traditional savings and investments. Real estate offers the potential for long-term appreciation, rental income, and a hedge against inflation.

“Investing at a young age has come with numerous benefits for me. Perhaps, most importantly would be the opportunity to start on what has become a lifelong passion. Real Estate has proven to be a highly lucrative investment option, and I do not plan to stop anytime soon,” Seun, a client at UVEST mentioned at the last allocation of UVEST METRO, Ibadan.

A few years back, millennials were predicted to make up a large proportion of land buyers in the coming years, and their impact in the real estate industry was not going to stop there. Millennials would also still make up the next generation of real estate investors.

Offering advice on how to take advantage of the growing trend, Babalola said: “Aspiring investors should know that there are just as many solutions for real estate investing as there are challenges. Gaining accurate knowledge on how to invest in real estate young will take time and research, but young investors can set themselves up for lifelong success with the right preparation.”

“Real estate is a tangible asset that millennials can see and touch, providing a sense of security and stability compared to other forms of investment. Additionally, real estate is often viewed as a hedge against inflation, as property values tend to appreciate over time, providing a potential safeguard against rising inflation rates.

Certainly, there is a drive to the influx of real estate investment by millennials not just in UVEST, but in Nigeria as a whole.

“All in all, there are a multitude of benefits available to those who break into real estate investing young. While you can start at any age, young investors have the chance to lay the groundwork for a successful investing career”.

  • JUST IN: You are a serial loser, Tinubu tells Atiku

JUST IN: You are a serial loser, Tinubu tells Atiku

The President-elect Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has reminded the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last presidential election Atiku Abubakar that he has always lost in his bid to lead the country since 1993.

Tinubu asked Atiku not to see his loss at the last election as strange, arguing that it would have been a miracle for the PDP and its candidate to win in view of the balkanization of the party before and during the election.

He noted: “The 1st petitioner (Atiku) has been consistently contesting and losing successive presidential elections in Nigeria since 1993, whether at the party primary election level or at the general election; including 1993,

when he lost the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primary election to

the late Chief M.K.O Abiola; 2007, when he lost the presidential election to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua; 2011, when he lost the Peoples Democratic Party presidential primary election to President Goodluck Jonathan; 2015, when he lost the APC primary election to President Muhammadu Buhari; 2019, when he lost the

presidential election to President Muhammadu Buhari; and now, 2023,

when he has again, lost the presidential election to the 2nd respondent (Tinubu).

“It was/is not a surprise and/or not by accident that

the electorate rejected the 1st petitioner at the polls of the presidential

election held on 25th February, 2023,” Tinubu said.

He noted that Atiku was without a stable political platform and has lost majority of his key supporters, in view of his habit of jumping from one political party to another.

Tinubu equally noted that Atiku’s emergence as PDP’s candidate fueled the crisis in the party, resulting in five of its sitting governors resolving to work against him and ensure he lost.

The President-elect said these in his response to the petition filed by Atiku and the PDP before the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), in which they are praying to be declared the winner or for the court to order a rerun.

Tinubu’s response was filed on Wednesday night by his team of lawyers led by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN).

He faulted the competence of the petition, describing it as not only frivolous, but an abuse of the process of court, the PDP having earlier filed a suit at the Supreme Court, through some of its governors, demanding the cancellation of the election.

He argued that the PDP and Atiku cannot maintain two cases on the same issue in different courts at the same time.

Tinubu noted that on February 28, the PDP through its governors in

Adamawa, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo and Sokoto states filed a suit at the Supreme Court, demanding among others, that the February 25 presidential election be cancelled.

‘The plaintiffs attacked INEC for not following its Manual and Regulations in the conduct of the election, and also complained of glitches, which is also the thrust of their petition.

“While the originating summons (in the suit before the Supreme Court) was filed on 28th February, 2023, this petition was filed on 21st March, 2023.

“The petitioners herein, through themselves and/or their proxies filed the originating summons at the Supreme Court, before filing this petition.

“The petitioners are maintaining two processes in respect of the same subject and/or complaint of theirs, against the conduct of the presidential election held on 25th February, 2023.

“This latter petition is abusive of the originating summons filed at the Supreme Court and is liable to be dismissed in limine,” he said.

Tinubu also faulted the competence of the petition on the grounds that Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) and Rabiu Musa

Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) were excluded despite the fact that the petitioners were contesting the results from the states won by LP and NNPP.

“The petitioners complained about outcome of the election in Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kano, Plateau and Lagos states.

“The 2nd respondent (Tinubu) was not declared as the overall winner in any of the states aforementioned.

“Mr. Peter Gregory Obi of the Labour Party was declared the overall winner of the election in Abia, Anambra, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Plateau and Lagos states, while Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria People’s Party

was declared winner of the election in Kano State.

“None of Labour Party, Peter Gregory Obi, Rabiu Musa

Kwankwaso, and New Nigeria People’s Party has been joined as a party to this petition.

“The 2nd respondent cannot be made willy-nilly to defend any infraction allegedly committed in any of the states afore-mentioned.

“The petitioners are querying the result of elections in all the states where they won the election, including but not limited to Adamawa, Bauchi, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Gombe, Yobe, Sokoto, Osun, Kebbi and Katsina states, without making themselves co-respondents to the petition; whereas, under Section 133(2) of the Electoral Act, 2022, a party whose election is

being challenged shall be made a respondent.”
