Okpebholo affirms commitment to people-centred development in Edo

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has assured that his administration remains focused on delivering his vision to transform the state.

Speaking in Benin City while addressing members of the Labour Party’s Obedient Movement, which recently dissolved its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that his mission to deliver visible, people-centred development remains unwavering.

He stated that nothing would distract his government from its mandate, describing the mandate given by Edo residents as clear and non-negotiable.

Okpebholo noted that ongoing projects across the state are designed to meet the real needs of communities rather than political interests, adding that his leadership approach is informed by firsthand experience of the challenges faced by the people.

“You voted for me for a reason, and that reason is the development of Edo State,” the governor declared. “I have a clear vision to move Edo from an ancient city to a modern city, and I am not losing focus.

“I went to Temboga and I couldn’t even walk inside because of the depth of the gully erosion. I promised the people I would return if elected, and I kept that promise. Today, the results are visible,” Okpebholo said.

He added that development should not be seen as a personal achievement of the governor but a collective success driven by the will of the people.

“Without your votes, I wouldn’t be here. So there is no special thank you to me. What we are seeing today belongs to all of us.

“Our president is carrying the common man along. Leakages have been blocked, and those who were feeding fat on the old system are now.”

Edo State Obedient Movement coordinator, Comrade Ikhuenbor Felix Igbinevbo, said the decision was based on confidence in President Tinubu’s reform agenda.

“About 95 percent of those here are members of the Obedient Movement and Labour Party stakeholders. We supported Peter Obi in 2023, but we have resolved to support President Tinubu for a second term because we believe his reforms will benefit the common man,” he said.

  • Foundation amplifies autism awareness through music concert

Foundation amplifies autism awareness through music concert

The Ferdinand Effah Music Heritage Foundation (FEMHF) has called for urgent national attention to the growing needs of vulnerable autistic individuals and their families, warning that low awareness, stigma and limited access to support services continue to expose many Nigerians living with autism to neglect and social exclusion.

The foundation said autism awareness remains imperative as thousands of families struggle in silence with inadequate healthcare options, high treatment costs, poor understanding of the condition and the absence of inclusive policies, stressing that without deliberate public engagement, autistic individuals risk being left behind in national development conversations.

Against this backdrop, FEMHF, in a statement on Tuesday by its President and Trustee, Stanley Effah, announced the deployment of music as a creative advocacy tool, unveiling an annual concert initiative designed to use the unifying power of music to drive autism awareness, promote acceptance and mobilise practical support for autistic individuals and their caregivers across Nigeria.

The Foundation said the 2026 concert, themed ‘Harmony for Autism’ was conceived in response to the growing challenges faced by autistic individuals and their caregivers, including social stigma, limited access to specialised services, financial strain and inadequate public awareness.

Effah stressed that music provides a powerful and inclusive medium to bridge these gaps, adding, “Music, like positive memories, is a universal language that brings people together.

“It has the power to connect communities, humanise lived experiences and give visibility to autistic individuals and families whose needs are often overlooked by society and policymakers.”

Under the programme, he said FEMHF will host annual live concerts featuring leading Nigerian music artists, its in-house ensemble Ferdy’s Band, as well as autistic individuals and groups who have demonstrated talent in music and live performance.

The concerts, according to the Foundation, are expected to create a safe and inclusive space where autistic individuals and their families can engage directly with the wider public, share their experiences, and challenge misconceptions about autism.

The Foundation explained that showcasing the abilities of autistic individuals is central to the initiative, “These concerts are not just about entertainment.

“They are about celebrating talent, reinforcing dignity and reminding society that autistic individuals have abilities, aspirations and contributions that deserve recognition and support,” Effah added.

Beyond awareness, the concerts will also function as a structured fundraising platform, FEMHF affirmed, noting that proceeds will be channelled towards supporting autistic children and young adults from less privileged families who are unable to afford essential therapies, medical interventions and specialised education.

The Foundation disclosed that funds raised will also be invested in long-term skills acquisition and development programmes aimed at empowering autistic individuals for self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.

According to FEMHF, planned programmes will cover training in music, arts and crafts, fashion design, tailoring, modelling and sports.

These initiatives will be implemented through existing platforms such as Ferdy’s Band and the foundation’s Fashion House, as well as a proposed Marathon and Sporting Centre, Effah explained.

Recognising the central role of caregivers, the Foundation said part of the proceeds will be dedicated to scholarships and training support for caregivers and professionals working in autism care, with the goal of strengthening Nigeria’s autism support workforce.

“The well-being of autistic individuals is closely tied to the capacity and resilience of their caregivers. Supporting families and building professional capacity is essential to improving outcomes and quality of life,” the Foundation noted.

Preparations for the annual concerts will include stage production, development of autism awareness materials, volunteer mobilisation and public sensitisation activities such as road walks and community information sessions.

The inaugural concert, according to the organizers, is scheduled for April 2026 and calls on corporate organizations, development partners and members of the public to support the initiative through sponsorship, partnerships and volunteer engagement.

The foundation also disclosed collaborations with the Ike Foundation for Autism on autism awareness road walks, and with Glory Wellness Regenerative Center to support access to stem cell treatment for autistic children from disadvantaged families.

Emphasising the broader impact of the initiative, FEMHF said sustained awareness and charitable engagement are critical to ensuring that autistic individuals are not left behind.

“Raising awareness is the first step toward inclusion and development. With consistent support, autistic individuals can reach their full potential and live fulfilling, dignified lives alongside their families,” Effah emphasised.

Wike reaffirms loyalty to Tinubu amid rising APC tensions in Rivers

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reaffirmed his unwavering allegiance to President Bola Tinubu, insisting that his political stronghold in Rivers State remains solidly behind the President, despite growing internal party tensions.

Wike made this known on Tuesday through a post on X, where he shared details of his ongoing political engagements across Rivers State.

According to him, after holding meetings in Oyigbo and Ogu-Bolo Local Government Areas, his consultations were set to continue in Akuku-Toru and Degema LGAs.

He described his activities as grassroots political engagement and emphasised that his loyalty to President Tinubu is unwavering.

He wrote, “Yesterday, we were in Oyigbo and Ogu-Bolo LGAs.

“Today, we will be in Akuku-Toru and Degema LGAs.

“Here, it is local politics and our support for Mr President is total,” he stated.

His remarks come at a time of heightened political friction between him and the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, over influence and control in Rivers State.

  • 2027: Labour Party will end Senator Kalu’s re-election to Senate, says Gov. Otti

2027: Labour Party will end Senator Kalu’s re-election to Senate, says Gov. Otti

Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, has vowed that the Labour Party (LP) will thwart Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s attempt to return to the Senate in 2027.

Otti made the remarks in response to a statement attributed to Kalu, in which the senator, speaking in Ebonyi State, pledged to ensure a landslide victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections, including backing the production of the state’s next governor from the party.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Governor Otti dismissed Kalu’s comments, asserting that he does not need Kalu’s support for his own re-election in 2027.

Otti described Kalu’s repeated insistence on not supporting him against his party’s candidate as “pedestrian and ludicrous,” and challenged the senator to produce the unit and ward-level results from the last governorship and presidential elections.

He claimed that the APC performed poorly in all polling units and wards in Bende Local Government Area, Kalu’s home constituency, during the 2023 elections.

According to Otti, “Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have bothered to respond to Senator Kalu over whom he chooses to work with or for, since it’s within his constitutional and democratic rights but because he drew the name of Governor Alex Otti into it once again, we thought it appropriate to respond and put the records straight.

“First, Governor Alex Otti has never gone to Senator Kalu to appeal to him to support his re-election bid, neither has he ever made any attempt to convince him to work against his party the APC or their would-be Governorship Candidate in 2027.

“Senator Kalu’s penchant for consistent emphasis on not supporting Otti against his party and would-be Candidate, has, to say the least, become pedestrian and ludicrous.

“If Senator Kalu’s repeated statements are geared towards issuing subtle threats to Governor Otti, then he is committing a calamitous blunder of costly consequences, because threats toughen rather than frighten or weaken Governor Otti.

“Again, those who genuinely want to support their party and candidates do not make unnecessary noise about it, rather they show it through hard work and sincere dedication.

“At this point, we challenge Senator Kalu to produce his unit and ward results in the last Governorship and Presidential elections.

“The results from INEC show clearly that the APC lost woefully both in the Governorship and Presidential elections at the polling units and wards of all the APC candidates in the 2023 election in Bende LGA where Senator Kalu hails from.

“The question is, if he truly worked for the President and his party, why did the President lose in his constituency while he won in the election conducted on the same day?

“Again, if Governor Otti could convince the people to so unanimously vote for him and the LP in the last election when they supported him merely on the strength of his character, capacity to serve, excellent antecedents and sound campaign manifesto which were just promises, and which saw him emerge the only LP Governor in the whole country, how does Senator Kalu think that the people would not support and vote massively for Governor Otti and any other candidates or party he directs them to vote for having seen the enduring transformation he has brought in the state in less than three years as Governor.

“It would be strange if Senator Kalu has yet to realise that Abia people see Governor Alex Otti as their best political party, and his re-election as a divine project that must be executed with courage, passion and precision.

“Finally, we congratulate Senator Kalu for drafting his younger brother into the 2027 governorship race. We need to remind him that this same brother of his was in the race for the 2023 Governorship election as the flag bearer of APP where he placed last at the end of polls.

“It must also be noted that at the moment, four capable and formidable Senatorial Aspirants have indicated their intention to run for the Abia North seat under Labour Party and whoever amongst them wins the primaries would receive massive support from the Governor to win the elections come 2027.”

Folarin calls for probe into alleged shooting at APC unity rally in Ogbomoso

The Oyo State leader of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Senator Teslim Folarin, has called for a full investigation into reports alleging that a commercial motorcyclist was shot during the All Progressives Congress (APC) unity rally held in Ogbomoso on Monday.

Reacting to the report, the former Senate Leader said neither the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, the APC nor the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu condone any form of lawlessness, violence or misconduct before, during or after political activities.

According to him, the APC unity rally in Ogbomoso was peaceful, orderly and successfully concluded, with no officially reported incident of violence at the venue.

However, given the seriousness of the allegation circulating in the public space, Folarin disclosed that he had formally requested a thorough investigation by relevant security agencies to determine what actually transpired.

He stressed that if any individual, regardless of status or political affiliation, is found to have acted unlawfully or engaged in criminal conduct, such a person must be prosecuted in line with the law.

Folarin maintained that criminality has no place in the APC, its rallies or Nigeria’s democratic process.

He explained that APC unity rallies are intended to promote peace, unity and democratic participation, not intimidation or violence.

The senator added that the Renewed Hope Agenda is firmly rooted in the rule of law, accountability and the protection of lives and property.

He also appealed to the public and the media to avoid speculation or premature conclusions while investigations are ongoing, warning against the politicisation or sensationalisation of security-related issues before facts are fully established.

Folarin reaffirmed that Oyo State must continue to serve as a model of peaceful political engagement, assuring residents that he would continue to work closely with security agencies to safeguard lives and property across the state.

  • Nigeria’s data usage hit 13.2m terabytes in 2025 — NCC

Nigeria’s data usage hit 13.2m terabytes in 2025 — NCC

Nigeria’s data usage reached about 13.2 million terabytes (TB) in 2025, reflecting a 35 per cent surge in internet traffic driven by rising usage across mobile and broadband networks, according to data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Figures obtained from the NCC indicate that national internet traffic has maintained a steady upward trend since the Commission began tracking monthly usage in January 2023.

Total data consumption rose from 7.27 million TB in 2023 to 9.76 million TB in 2024, representing a 34.3 per cent year-on-year increase, across major operators including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, T2 and other internet service providers.

Between January and November 2025, Nigerians consumed 11.86 million TB, up from 8.79 million TB in the corresponding period of 2024—an increase of 34.96 per cent, or 3.07 million TB. This places average daily data usage at over 41,000 TB, intensifying pressure on mobile and broadband networks nationwide.

According to data published on the NCC’s website, national internet traffic across MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, T2 and other providers has risen consistently since 2023.

“In 2023, Nigeria recorded 7.27 million TB in total data usage. This climbed to 9.76 million TB in 2024, representing a 34.3 per cent year-on-year growth.

The momentum has intensified in 2025, with full-year consumption now projected to exceed 13.2 million TB, implying growth of about 35 per cent over 2024.

“Between January and November 2025 alone, Nigerians consumed 11.86 million TB, up from 8.79 million TB in the same period last year—an increase of 34.96 per cent, or 3.07 million TB in additional volume,” the report read.

At the current pace, Nigeria is consuming just over 41,000 TB of data daily, underscoring growing strain on telecom infrastructure.

The data also reveal a strong seasonal pattern, with December consistently emerging as the peak month for data consumption. In 2024, December traffic exceeded November levels by 94,502 TB, while the increase stood at 67,794 TB in 2023. Month-on-month growth for December averaged 10 to 11 per cent in both years, largely driven by holiday travel, video streaming, social media activity and online shopping.

Industry players attribute the sustained growth to cheaper smartphones, wider access to mobile internet, increased video consumption, expanding cloud services, remote-work tools and the ongoing digitalisation of businesses and public services.

Broadband penetration also crossed the 50 per cent mark in November 2025 for the first time, a significant milestone, although still below the 70 per cent target set under the National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020–2025.

Speaking on the report, telecom analyst Osita Odafi said Nigeria’s growing appetite for internet services had pushed national data consumption to 11.86 million TB as of November 30, 2025, placing the country firmly on track to exceed 13 million TB by year-end.

Odafi said the surge reflects how streaming platforms, cloud computing, fintech services and widespread smartphone adoption are reshaping how Nigerians live and work.

Analysts increasingly regard data consumption as a proxy for broader economic activity, reflecting how Nigerians communicate, transact, learn and entertain themselves.

Also speaking, the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, Dinesh Balsingh, said rapid urbanisation was intensifying demand for data services.

“Cities like Lagos are growing at lightning speed with more people, more businesses, more devices.

“We recognise that data is the new oxygen. That is why we are investing heavily in 5G and fibre to build a smart, scalable network that can carry the weight of Nigeria’s digital future,” Balsingh said.

However, regulators have cautioned that infrastructure strain remains a concern. The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, said service quality still requires improvement despite recent progress.

“Quality of service today is not yet where we want it to be, but it is equally true that we are no longer where we used to be,” Maida said, adding that operators are being compelled to accelerate investment while improving customer experience.

For telecom operators and internet service providers, the figures present both opportunity and urgency, as sustaining growth will require rapid expansion of network capacity, improved resilience and smarter infrastructure planning.

Analysts say policy success will depend on faster implementation of the 90,000-kilometre national fibre rollout under Project BRIDGE, resolution of right-of-way challenges, reduction of multiple taxation at sub-national levels and improved security to protect telecom infrastructure from vandalism.

Odafi noted that if these constraints are addressed, Nigeria’s current data boom may mark not a peak, but the early stage of a much broader digital transformation.

Reality TV star Phyna has expressed her desire to make amends with singer Davido, nearly two years after their online disagreement.

The controversy began in October 2023 when Davido liked a social media post describing Phyna’s fans as “useless”.

…the right thing will be done soon in Rivers State – Wike

The Chairman of the Rivers Elders Council, Chief Ferdinand Alabraba, on Tuesday said the support given to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by Rivers State during the 2023 general elections was yielding positive results.

Alabraba lamented the current political situation in the state, adding that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, had made significant sacrifices for Rivers State and deserved continued support to enable him deliver further dividends of democracy to the people.

He made the remarks in Abonnema, Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, during the minister’s ongoing “thank you” visit to local government areas in the state.

The elder statesman hailed Wike as an icon in Nigeria’s contemporary politics, noting his pragmatic style of politics and astute leadership.

According to him, the minister took two critical decisions in 2023, including the decision to handover Governorship to the Ijaw people, a position he said had eluded the community for 24 years.

Alabraba, described the failure of Governor Similalayi Fubara to show appreciation for Wike’s support as an “abberation,” stating that the Ijaw are not ungrateful people.

He said; “When you wanted to conclude your tenure, your thoughts were also for Rivers State. You took two critical decisions. First, you sacrificed everything, fought many battles, and enthroned a successor from the Ijaw ethnic nationality — a crown that has eluded the Ijaw people for 24 years.

“You, an Ikwerre man did it for us. What we are seeing in Rivers State today is an abberation. Abberation in the sense that the Ijaw, as rightly said by others, are not ungrateful people.

“The second decision you took, which is also impacting on Rivers State today… you positioned Rivers State to support the candidacy of Bola Tinubu, while your party retained all the other seats. That singular decision is what has kept Rivers State afloat today,” he said.

Alabraba also assured the Minister of the support of the people, stating that they “know where to go” in 2027.

“Let me assure you, Rivers people know where to go. And with Wike, 2027, under the Renewed Hope, is the way to go,” the Chairman said.

Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike appriciated the people for their support in 2023, despite the uncertainty surrounding President Tinubu’s candidacy.

Concerning the governorship position in Rivers State, the minister said he would correct the mistake he had made in 2023, while declaring support for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

“Here, we have shut the door, no other person other than Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Just follow our steps and the right thing will be done.”
