2027 Presidency: Obi will not serve as running mate to anybody in ADC, Tanko

The national coordinator of the Obedient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, has affirmed that Peter Obi remains a leading contender for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027, saying that he will not serve as a running mate to any politician within the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking on Frontline, a current affairs programme on Eagle 102.5 FM, Tanko dismissed speculation that the ADC is under the influence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stressing that “everybody that was in that particular coalition contributed to that particular coalition with their hard-earned money. Nobody owns that political party, please, and please, don’t get it wrong.

“I am only focusing on my candidate. I’m selling my candidate to the public based on his capacity and credibility, and what he has to offer Nigerians. That’s all,” Tanko said.

He described Obi as a candidate capable of delivering what the Obedient Movement calls a “moral solution” to the country’s leadership challenges.

The Nation reports that Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has officially joined the coalition-backed ADC ahead of the 2027 election.

The former Anambra state governor said his defection aims to transform and rescue Nigeria.

On policy priorities, Tanko outlined that Obi’s administration would focus on economic discipline, national security, and investment in agriculture while ensuring that fuel subsidies are managed sustainably. “Somebody concerned about the public will not tax them beyond their reach,” he said.

Tanko also highlighted Obi’s approach to foreign policy, noting that “the people of Nigeria are the ones that Mr. Peter Obi will interface with as a gentleman. And then he will also link up with the international community to ensure that they’ve got that particular respect they desire.”

On the coalition arrangement, Tanko emphasised that Obi’s alignment with the ADC followed extensive consultations, reflecting a people-driven strategy rather than personal ambition. “The decision to align with the ADC came from a conglomerate of diverse groups seeking to correct Nigeria’s problems and reclaim the country for its people.

“When they came together, the ADC was chosen as the political vehicle. Ordinarily, Peter Obi would follow with the people who are calling for him,”

Tanko explained. He described the young Nigerians involved in the process as “the deciders” in determining Obi’s political path.

Responding to criticisms of Obi’s nomadic movement in politics, especially from the Labour Party, Tanko said structural challenges within the party necessitated the shift.

“Forces in power deliberately undermined the party’s functionality. If your house is being deliberately set on fire, would you remain inside it? There was a calculated attempt to destroy what was being built,” he said, noting that the ADC provides a larger platform capable of accommodating diverse political interests.

“Politics is a game of numbers, and that larger coalition was already evident in this grouping.”

The National Coordinator was confident of Obi’s chances in securing the ADC ticket, rating it “ten over ten.” He emphasized that Obi’s chances are measured on his own viability and electability: “Politics has no permanent enemies, only permanent interests. The interest here is good governance, and Peter Obi represents that.”

He highlighted Obi’s unblemished record, saying, “No corruption has been found against him. His credentials have been scrutinized. His data-driven arguments have largely been validated. The international community views him as a credible driver of economic reform.”

Addressing claims that Obi’s ADC alignment signals desperation, Tanko said, “He has never been desperate. If he were, he would have imposed himself on a party. Instead, he followed the people. He is the people’s choice.”

Speaking on Obi’s one-term pledge, Tanko said it is a promise to Nigerians, not just a political party: “If elected in 2027, Peter Obi would complete the remaining four years for the South and return power to the North. This demonstrates credibility and national unity.”

UK urges Elon Musk to act over ‘appalling’ Grok AI deepfakes

The UK government has urged Elon Musk to take immediate action to prevent Grok, the artificial intelligence tool built into X, from being used to generate fake and non-consensual sexualised images of women and children.

UK Technology Secretary Liz Kendall made the call in a statement, following growing reports that Grok has been exploited to create deepfake images targeting X users.

In recent weeks, several media investigations have uncovered complaints from users who say they were victimised by Grok-generated deepfakes, including cases involving sexualised images of women and minors.

One reported case involved a manipulated image of 14-year-old Stranger Things actor Nell Fisher, which Grok allegedly altered to depict her wearing a banana-print bikini, according to The Guardian. Concerns surrounding Grok intensified in late December after an update enabled users to upload photographs and request AI-generated edits.

On Monday, UK media regulator Ofcom said it had made “urgent contact” with X and was investigating allegations that Grok had been used to produce “undressed images” of individuals. The platform had earlier issued a warning to users, cautioning against the generation of illegal content, including child sexual abuse material.

Reacting to the development, Kendall described the images created using Grok as “absolutely appalling” and called on X to respond swiftly.

“No one should have to go through the ordeal of seeing intimate deepfakes of themselves online,” Kendall said. “We cannot and will not allow the proliferation of these demeaning and degrading images, which are disproportionately aimed at women and girls.”

She added, “X needs to deal with this urgently.”

Troops of Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) have rescued six kidnapped victims during a clearance operation in the Kajuru/Kujama general area of Kaduna State.

The victims were freed on Monday, January 5, 2026, during a coordinated military operation conducted across several flashpoints in Chikun, Kajuru, Kachia, and Kagarko Local Government Areas, including border communities around Kauru.

The operation, according to the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col Shuaibu Umar, was part of sustained efforts to restrict the freedom of action of violent extremists and criminal elements operating within the Joint Operations Area of Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.

He said troops of Sub-Sector 5, who were already carrying out clearance operations in the Kujeni general area, swiftly responded to a distress alert on the activities of suspected bandits around the Kasso adjoining hills.

Upon arrival at the location, the troops made contact with the criminals and engaged them with effective suppressive fire, forcing the suspects to flee in disarray into the surrounding forest.

The troops immediately exploited the area, leading to the successful rescue of six kidnapped victims, who were found unharmed.

    • …calls off planned nationwide protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has thrown its weight behind the implementation of the new tax laws, which took effect last week.

The body said its new position was informed by engagements with officials from several government agencies and departments, including the National Assembly, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS).

The association therefore called off its proposed nationwide protest, earlier scheduled for 14th January 2025.

The decision is contained in a communique issued at an expanded National Executive Council Meeting on Tuesday in Abuja and signed by the Chairman of the Communiqué Drafting Committee and NANS President, Comr. Olushola Oladoja.

The expanded NEC meeting was attended by members of the National Executive Council, NANS; National Association of University Students (NAUS) – President and Senate President; National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) – President and Senate President; National Association of Colleges of Education Students (NANCES) – President and Senate President; NANS Zonal Coordinators across the six geopolitical zones of the Federation; Joint Campus Council (JCC) Chairmen across the Federation; Association of Nigerian Female Students (ANFS) – National President and Secretary; National Association of Female Students (NAFS) – President and Secretary; Chairman, Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele; selected student leaders, policy experts, and other critical stakeholders.

The communique read in part, “After extensive deliberations, presentations, and engagements, the Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) of NANS resolved as follows:

“That the new Tax Reform Law is a deliberate and well-intentioned law aimed at improving Nigeria’s economy, strengthening institutional frameworks for revenue generation, with deliberate provisions to protect low-income earners and vulnerable citizens.

“That the law does not target the poor; instead, it strengthens social protection while ensuring that higher-income earners contribute more equitably to national revenue, preventing lopsidedness and unnecessary tax burdens on a few.

“That the Law provides for centralised revenue generation with a clear and transparent sharing formula across the Federal Government, State Governments, and Local Governments.

“That the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) shall serve as ambassadors of public enlightenment, committed to educating Nigerians on the purpose, importance, and benefits of the Tax Reform Law to boost citizens’ confidence and trust in the Federal Government during the implementation of this Law.

“That ENEC affirms the authenticity of the Tax Reform Law as officially released by the National Assembly following the conclusion of its investigation.

“That, consequent upon the above resolutions, NANS hereby calls off the proposed nationwide protest earlier scheduled for 14th January 2025.”

The meeting passed a vote of confidence on the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, “for his leadership, professionalism, and contributions to Nigeria’s fiscal reforms, particularly in operationalising this novel reform.”

It added, “ENEC also commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his continued foresight, intentional leadership, and unwavering commitment to the structural and economic transformation of the Nigerian State, particularly in the areas of fiscal policy reforms and economic stability.

“Furthermore, NANS reiterates its thanks to Mr. President for his NELFUND initiative, which is increasing funding and access to tertiary education for Nigerian students and youths. These crucial initiatives are demonstrating their usefulness in transforming our educational system.

“On this note, we also reaffirm our Vote of Confidence on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as we employ him to continue the good work that he has commenced in transforming the fortunes of our great country, Nigeria.”

Gbenga Hashim’s solidarity movement strengthens northern mobilization, rallies support in Kaduna

The Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement has intensified its grassroots mobilisation in Northern Nigeria, with a renewed push in Kaduna State as part of preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during an engagement with local mobilising groups in Kaduna, the National Coordinator of the movement, Abdurazak Hamzat, reaffirmed the group’s commitment to what he described as safeguarding Nigeria through sustained grassroots mobilisation across the country.

Hamzat said the Kaduna visit was part of the movement’s ongoing nationwide consultations aimed at assessing state-level activities and encouraging members to remain focused despite the prevailing political climate.

He disclosed that the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement has established several mobilising groups across the federation, noting that Kaduna State alone hosts four different groups spread across various local government areas.

According to him, the movement operates through multiple solidarity structures, all united by a shared national objective of promoting good governance and national renewal.

“Our message to Nigerians as we approach the 2027 general elections is clear: citizens must actively safeguard the country from misrule and misgovernance,” Hamzat said, adding that the movement remains resolute in mobilising Nigerians nationwide.

Also speaking, the Chief of Staff to Dr. Gbenga Hashim, Mr. Kamal Sani, described the movement as strong, focused, and divinely guided. He expressed optimism that, given the calibre of individuals involved and what he described as divine support, the movement would continue to grow and make a positive impact on Nigeria’s future.

Sani portrayed Dr. Gbenga Hashim as a unifier and bridge-builder, citing his extensive background in politics and business, as well as his long-standing commitment to national development. He noted that Hashim’s cross-religious and regional relationships place him in a unique position to foster unity and collective progress across the country.

In his remarks, the Kaduna State Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, Comrade Ahmed Sabo Jimeta, commended the dedication of grassroots mobilisers working to advance the objectives of the movement. He expressed appreciation to supporters, particularly women and men actively involved in its activities, describing their efforts as critical to sustaining the movement’s momentum.

Jimeta said the level of commitment demonstrated by members across Kaduna State reflects a strong sense of unity and purpose, reaffirming the movement’s resolve to continue supporting Dr. Gbenga Hashim’s presidential aspiration ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a related development, another pro-Gbenga Hashim group, led by Muhammad Aliyu Kacham, the GOH Front, called on coordinators across the 23 local government areas of Kaduna State to intensify mobilisation efforts towards the actualisation of Hashim’s presidential ambition.

The one-day event attracted hundreds of supporters who paid glowing tributes to the Kebbi-born politician and global businessman.

Dignitaries in attendance included Dr. Ibrahim Umar, Alhaji Muhammad Zanna, Alhaji Muhammad Danmaliki, and Amina Ibrahim, among others.

Ex-Rivers SSG Danagogo denies alleged plot to assassinate Wike

A former Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Chief Tammy Danagogo, has dismissed allegations linking him to a purported plot to assassinate a former Rivers State governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike.

In a statement signed by his Special Assistant, Obele Briggs, Danagogo described reports alleging his involvement in a telephone conversation centred on an assassination plan as spurious and fabricated.

“Dr. Danagogo categorically denies these allegations. They are baseless, false, and fabricated,” the statement said. “He has no dealings whatsoever with anybody and was never, at any time, involved in any discussion, meeting, or plan bordering on violence, assassination, or any unlawful act.”

The statement further described the claims circulating on some online platforms as malicious and deliberately designed to tarnish his reputation, mislead the public, and associate him with matters about which he does not know.

Family counters Edo police claim, says ransom paid for release of abducted twins

The family of the twins abducted following the brutal murder of their father has challenged the Edo State Police Command’s statement that the children were rescued unharmed.

The twins were abducted on December 11, 2025, after armed assailants attacked their apartment at Kalabar Quarters, Afokpella, in Estako East Local Government Area, leaving their father, Mr. Andrew Ilabeshi, with machete injuries. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N100 million.

Edo Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem had stated that a combined security team rescued the twins unhurt.

However, the deceased’s brother, Okhale Ilabeshi, clarified that the children were released only after a substantial ransom was paid.

He added that the twins were further traumatised upon learning of their father’s death after their release.

According to him, “The twins were not rescued. We paid ransom to the kidnappers. Nobody rescued them. The kidnappers kept calling us. After the ransom was paid, the kidnappers asked us to go somewhere, and the twins were found there.

“They were kidnapped on 11th December. After their release, they were tired and exhausted. They were shocked and disappointed by the news of their father’s death. They were aware their father was badly injured, but never knew he had died.

“The community has been fortifying the vigilante, but that has not been enough. We need assistance from the state government and the federal government to curb kidnappings.”

  • Skales addresses criticism over church testimony

Skales addresses criticism over church testimony

Afrobeats singer Skales has responded to criticism over his testimony at Harvesters Church, acknowledging that his initial reaction may have been rushed but asserting his clarified stance.

In his testimony, Skales credited Barcelona star Lamine Yamal with reviving his career after his 2015 hit “Shake Body” gained renewed attention. He expressed gratitude for Yamal’s role in reigniting his music journey.

Responding to critics on X, Skales wrote, “I may have responded too quickly to the concerns raised about my crossover testimony at Harvesters Church. After sitting with it, I felt it was important to respond again. This time with more clarity and less emotion, for the sake of the Body of Christ.”

He emphasised that every believer has a purpose, whether within the pulpit or beyond, and that one’s calling outside the church is equally meaningful.

Defending his testimony, Skales highlighted that professionals—including musicians, filmmakers, athletes, and teachers—serve God through their work. Citing 1 Corinthians 12:28, he stressed that sharing God’s impact in one’s life is entirely appropriate.

Reaffirming his commitment, Skales declared his readiness to publicly share his faith, stating that as a child of God, he has no reservations about testifying to His work in his life.

“As children of the Lord, we all have our part to play. I truly believe that those who believe in the Word but are not in the pulpit do not have a lesser calling, just a different assignment. Just because something doesn’t happen from the pulpit doesn’t make it any less significant. Musicians, filmmakers, athletes, teachers, etc.

“We exist to make life lighter for others. We all function here, serving God through what we’ve been called to do. That said, I will never believe that testifying about what my God has done for me is wrong! I’m a child of God, and I have no problem sharing that with the world. 1 Corinthians 12:28,” he wrote.
