Lagos fire: Family sympathises with victims, seeks building assessment

The Sunmonu Animashaun Family has sympathised with residents, traders and businesses affected by a devastating fire on Lagos Island and sought a Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) assessment.

The family made the call in a statement on Sunday, jointly signed by Mr Rafiu Jawando, Acting Chairman, Board of Trustees, and Otunba Hakeem Oladipo Animashaun, Secretary, Board of Trustees.

“It is with a heavy heart full of sadness and sorrow that we recall the horrifying and tragic fire incident which started on Dec. 24, 2025, at Shitta-Bey Court, also known as Great Nigeria House.

“By the next day, the fire had spread to our family house (Agbole Animashaun) and other adjoining buildings within the vicinity.

“In its ferociousness, it crossed the road and completely razed the Shitta-Bey Mosque,” the statement said.

The family said the impact of the fire was massive, adding that five buildings belonging to different branches of the family were affected.

It noted that officers of the fire service had to demolish part of the Animashaun Family House to curb the spread of the fire and provide ventilation to quell the blaze.

According to the statement, the demolition substantially compromised the integrity of the family house, making the safety of occupants no longer guaranteed.

“Subsequently, the family is calling on the management of the Lagos State Building Control Agency to conduct an assessment of the building,” it said.

The family also disclosed that the historic Animashaun Mosque, reputed to be the first mosque where Juma’at service was held in Lagos, was partially affected by the fire.

It said the mosque, already dilapidated due to years of neglect, could no longer guarantee the safety of worshippers.

Consequently, the family said the mosque management committee had been directed to suspend all religious and commercial activities within and around the mosque pending the outcome of an integrity test.

“The Sunmonu Animashaun Family sympathises with all residents, business concerns, traders and everyone who uses the affected buildings.

“We pray that Almighty Allah turns this loss into gain and replenishes the pockets of all those directly or indirectly affected.

“We also mourn those reported to have lost their lives in the incident. May Almighty Allah grant their families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” it said.

  • Remita emerges major force powering Nigeria’s trillion-naira payments ecosystem

Remita emerges major force powering Nigeria’s trillion-naira payments ecosystem

Remita Payment Services Limited (RPSL) has emerged as a major force driving Nigeria’s digital payments ecosystem, processing over 100 trillion Naira in transactions in 2025 alone. The fintech platform plays a central role in enabling a wide range of daily financial activities, including salary disbursements, loan repayments, school fees payments, utility bills, government services, and contributions to cooperative and savings groups.

Licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria as a Switch, it is regarded as one of the top 3 payment technology forces in Africa’s largest economy,

In 2025, Remita processed well over 100 trillion Naira of payment transactions, underscoring its position as a provider of significant financial infrastructure in Nigeria. This scale was not driven by isolated surges but by sustained, day-to-day activity spanning transaction switching for financial institutions, corporate and public payments processing, and the enablement of consumer financial flows, reinforcing its central role in the economy.

Remita also enabled access to over 15,000 products and services across 180 countries, further establishing its role as an invisible backbone connecting businesses, institutions, and individuals within Africa’s largest economy. It illustrates a defining paradox of modern infrastructure: the more essential it becomes, the less visible it appears.

Within the fintech and banking industries, this role is often described as “the rails” – the underlying tracks on which Nigeria’s payment ecosystem runs. Like electricity through power lines or water through pipes, Remita’s impact is most pronounced where secured and reliable execution is non-negotiable. Across corporate payments, institutional disbursements, large-scale revenue collection, and complex multi-party transactions, Remita operates as a trusted national infrastructure, where even minor disruptions can have cascading consequences.

Throughout 2025, Remita supported revenue collection and disbursements across the federal, state, and local governments, operating reliably to ensure the wheels of government operations grounded smoothly to avoid delayed salaries, stalled public services, and erosion of public trust. Sustained infrastructure uptime reinforced a core principle of modern governance: when systems function seamlessly, confidence is preserved.

On any day, Remita enables a civil servant in Gombe to receive her salary, a contractor in Kogi to be seamlessly paid, a student in Enugu to pay university fees, a resident of Abuja to pay for water, a property owner to pay land use charge in Lagos, and a contravening citizen to pay FRSC anywhere across the country. These millions of transactions occur concurrently, at scale, and without friction, by design.

2025 marked Remita’s progression toward continental relevance. Through strategic integration with the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), Remita has laid the foundation for simplified cross-border African payments – reducing dependency on third-party currencies and enabling businesses to transact across borders with greater ease.

“As Nigeria’s digital economy becomes more interconnected with the rest of Africa, the role of infrastructure becomes even more consequential,” explains ‘DeRemi Atanda, Managing Director of Remita. “Our responsibility is to build systems that can support that future. We are not just building for Nigeria. We are building infrastructure that can support Africa’s digital economy.”

AI was another frontier where Remita demonstrated industry leadership in 2025. Its deep understanding of the need for a shift from automation to intelligence led to its release of a landmark fintech AI report, which positioned Nigeria within global conversations on the application of artificial intelligence in financial services. More than thought leadership, the report signaled commitment to building payment infrastructure that is not only resilient at scale, but increasingly responsive, predictive, and aligned with the realities of modern financial ecosystems.

Financial inclusion and access to financial services by yet a large population continued to be a major discussion in 2025. Through partnerships with agent networks such as Moniepoint, NIPOST and Paga, Remita further extended services beyond traditional banking touchpoints – bringing formal financial systems closer to individuals and small businesses, particularly in underbanked communities.

In the works from Remita is a next-generation mobile app that generated a lot of buzz in Q4 2025 when it entered a public beta. Built on the same backbone enterprise-grade infrastructure, the app has amazing features like multi-bank account management, esusu groups, discounted airline tickets, recurring payments, international payments with local currency, and others in development that will surely excite the market. The public market launch of the app is scheduled for Q1 2026.

Remita remains the core infrastructure behind Nigeria’s digital economy and is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of Africa’s financial future. As the continent moves toward greater integration and rail-play becomes the most crucial element, the platforms that matter most won’t be the loudest or the flashiest. They will be the ones that work, consistently and at scale, enabling prosperity for millions while remaining largely invisible to those they serve. That’s the mark of truly transformative infrastructure, and the story of Remita’s impact in 2025.

Remita Payment Services Limited (RPSL) is a leading Nigerian fintech company committed to simplifying financial transactions for individuals, businesses, and public institutions. Through innovative payment infrastructure and enterprise tools, RPSL enables its customers to collect, disburse, and manage funds securely and efficiently. As a trusted partner in Nigeria’s digital economy, Remita continues to champion inclusive growth through technology-driven financial empowerment.

  • Agbese hails Tinubu’s approval of NNPCL debt cancellation, praises Ojulari’s leadership

Agbese hails Tinubu’s approval of NNPCL debt cancellation, praises Ojulari’s leadership

The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has hailed President Bola Tinubu’s approval of the cancellation of substantial legacy debts owed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to the Federation Account as a resounding endorsement of the transparent and transformative leadership of NNPCL Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari.

The presidential directive, which wiped out approximately $1.42 billion and N5.57 trillion in outstanding obligations as of December 31, 2024, followed a meticulous reconciliation by the Stakeholder Alignment Committee.

Agbese described the move as a clear vote of confidence in Ojulari’s stewardship.

“This debt forgiveness is not just financial relief; it is a powerful testament to the trust the Presidency has in Engr. Ojulari’s commitment to transparency and accountability,” Agbese said.

“Under his leadership, NNPCL has opened its books like never before, enabling accurate reconciliation of long-standing disputes and paving the way for this historic clean slate.”

Agbese pointed to several landmark achievements under Ojulari  as evidence of his disciplined approach that has repositioned NNPCL as a commercially viable and profit-driven entity.

“The resumption of monthly financial and operational reports – a practice dormant since 2021 – has restored stakeholder confidence and ensured real-time oversight,” he noted.

“This level of openness directly facilitated the transparent reconciliation process that led to the debt cancellation.”

He further commended the record-breaking performance in upstream operations.

“NNPCL’s subsidiary, NNPC Exploration and Production Limited, achieved a daily output of 355,000 barrels on December 1, 2025 – the highest in 36 years,” Agbese stated.

“With average production surging 52% from 203,000 barrels per day in 2023 to 312,000 in 2025, and national output climbing to over 1.7 million barrels per day, Ojulari has delivered tangible results through collaborations with partners and robust measures against crude theft.”

On infrastructure, Agbese highlighted major breakthroughs.

“The completion of the main line welding for the $2.8 billion Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, including the challenging River Niger crossing, is a game-changer,” he said.

“This milestone, achieved under Ojulari’s watch, will soon deliver gas to northern Nigeria, sparking industrial growth and economic diversification.”

Agbese also praised Ojulari’s forward-looking targets.

“Setting realistic goals for 1.8 million barrels per day in 2026, backed by the Petroleum Industry Act reforms that have freed NNPCL from federal funding dependency, shows visionary leadership,” he added.

“These reforms have turned NNPCL into a profit-oriented company focused on national energy security.”

Touching on downstream efforts, Agbese noted steady advancements in refinery rehabilitation.”Ojulari’s team has made significant progress on the Port Harcourt Refining Company, aligning with broader initiatives to boost domestic refining capacity and reduce import dependence,” he remarked.

“This comprehensive approach ensures long-term sustainability.”

Agbese emphasised the broader impact.”With this debt resolution, NNPCL can now channel full energy into current operations and future investments,” he said.

“Engr. Ojulari’s transparent leadership has not only resolved historical burdens but is building a stronger, more accountable national oil company for all Nigerians. We look forward to even greater milestones ahead.”

  • Oyebanji urges support for Tinubu’s reforms, peaceful conduct ahead of June guber poll

Oyebanji urges support for Tinubu’s reforms, peaceful conduct ahead of June guber poll

    • …says electioneering for gubernatorial election won’t affect governance

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has urged the people of the State to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his bid to rescue Nigeria from saboteurs who don’t want the country and its citizens to be free from hardship.

Oyebanji urged Ekiti people to intensify their prayers for the President and his administration to successfully implement impactful reforms that will make life better for Nigerians and rescue them from those holding the country by the jugular.

The Governor made the statement on Friday at an Inter-faith Thanksgiving Service to mark the first working day of the year 2026, which took place at the Obafemi Awolowo Civic and Convention Centre, Ado Ekiti, where he led the people, including top government functionaries, in prayers for peace, progress, and prosperity of the state and the country at large.

He reiterated his call to politicians, political parties, and the people of the state to maintain peace before, during, and after the June 20 governorship election, promising to manage the affairs of the state well, such that electioneering activities would not affect governance and service delivery.

Governor Oyebanji emphasised his readiness as a governorship candidate and that of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to play the game according to the rules, expressing confidence that his superlative performance in the last three years would earn him and his party another four-year term in office.

While attributing the success recorded by his administration to God and the Ekiti people, Oyebanji also reserved a special commendation for President Tinubu, whom he noted had so far supported Ekiti immensely to be better than what it used to be, urging the people to reciprocate by supporting the policies of the President and praying for him to succeed.

Speaking further, Oyebanji said the President’s policies, although painful initially, have started to yield dividends. He cited the remarkable drop in prices of food items and the pump price of petrol as some of the noticeable gains.

Oyebanji said, “For everything we have achieved here, I give God the glory, but after God, I stand here to publicly thank the President for his support for us and his policies, which are positively turning around the situation in our country. Remember, it is not the price you bought a bag of rice a year ago that you are buying it now; it is not the prices you bought garri, beans, and even fuel that you are buying them now.

“We must join the President to take this country from those who are holding it by the jugular. We should support the tax reforms because they will make more money available to all tiers of government. Let us always pray for Mr President to defeat those who don’t want this country to prosper and be better for all of us.

“When you have a leader who is prepared, when you have a leader who means well for the people and a leader that is sincere, the country will move forward. A policy may be tough initially, it’s like a boil that will be more painful when it’s about to burst. These are necessary things we have to go through.

“Now, the worst is over, the economy is rebounding, the Naira has stabilized, fuel price is coming down, inflation is receding, and what we can do now is to encourage the President and pray for him. If he can do this in less than three years, imagine what he will do in eight years.

“But those who have held this country by the jugular, who don’t want us to prosper, it behoves us to retrieve this country from them. The President is ready, we in Ekiti State must support him and continue to pray for him because he has demonstrated capacity, he has demonstrated commitment, and he has demonstrated that he knows what he is doing.”

Declaring 2026 as a year of unlimited opportunities in Ekiti, Oyebanji charged political office holders in the state to work assiduously as stewards and manage the resources of the state well so that every citizen will feel the impact of government.

Earlier in the Christian sermon, the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Reverend Emmanuel Aribasoye, charged Oyebanji to always remember the covenant that brought him into office and not to allow anybody to turn him against God, reminding the Governor to maintain his good personality as a servant of the people.

The State Qareeb Missioner, Alhaji Abdul-Hakeem Afenifere, advised the Governor and other political leaders in the state to refrain from ingratitude, lack of contentment, and failure to show mercy to the less privileged, reminding them that power is transient and that they will stand before God to give account of their stewardship.

The event was attended by the Deputy Governor, Mrs Monisade Afuye; the First Lady, Dr Olayemi Oyebanji;  Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, Chief Judge, Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye; House of Representatives member representing Ekiti South Federal Constituency I, Hon. Adeniyi Ojuawo; Chairman of the State Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado; state lawmakers, heads of labour and trade unions, heads of institutions, local government chairmen, political office holders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil servants, and members of the public.

  • Constitution Review: NASS proposes four year tenure for LG, 25 year age limit

Constitution Review: NASS proposes four year tenure for LG, 25 year age limit

    • …only LG legislature can remove chairman

As part of the clamour for local government reform in the country, the National Assembly is proposing a uniform four-year renewable tenure for elected local government officials across the country.

The proposed law sets a minimum age of 25 for those willing to contest local government Chairmanship election, and a minimum of at least a school certificate level or its equivalent, and must be a member of a political party, and is sponsored by that political party.

It also made proposals to be followed for the removal of elected local government chairmen and vice Chairmen, practically stripping state governors of the power to dissolve an elected council.

The proposal is part of a broad recommendation by the joint Constitution review committee of the Senate and House of Representatives, adopted at its retreat in Lagos, which is currently awaiting consideration by both chambers of the National Assembly.

44 constitution alteration bills are awaiting the approval of both chambers before being forwarded to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for concurrence and subsequent transmission to the President for his assent.

Voting on the bills was earlier scheduled to be held before the Christmas and New Year break, but members of the House of Representatives insisted that they needed time to study the recommendations and probably consult with their constituents before voting.

If passed and assented to by the President, it will put an end to scattered tenure for local government chairmen across the country, which currently ranges from two to three years, depending on the state.

Only the six Area Councils in the FCT currently run a four-year tenure among the 774 local government areas in the country.

According to the proposal cited by The Nation, section 212 of the constitution is to be amended to provide for a uniform fixed tenure for elected local government officials across the country, unlike what is currently obtained in many states across the country.

The provision states that “subject to the provisions of this Constitution, a person shall hold the office of Chairman of a Local Government Council until – (a) when his successor in office takes the oath of that office; (b) he dies whilst holding such office; (c) the date when his resignation from office takes effect; or (d) he otherwise ceases to hold office in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.

It also states that, “Subject to the provisions of subsection (1) of this section, the Chairman shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of four years commencing from the date when –(a) in the case of a person first elected as Chairman under this Constitution, he took the Oath of Allegiance and oath of office; and  (b) the person last elected to that office took the Oath of Allegiance and oath of office or would, but for his death, have taken such oaths.”

The proposed amendments also provide that “in the determination of the four-year term, where a re-run election has taken place and the person earlier sworn in wins the re-run election, the time spent in office before the date the election was annulled shall be taken into account.

“If the Federation is at war in which the territory of Nigeria is physically involved and the President considers that it is not practicable to hold elections, the National Assembly may by resolution extend the period of four years mentioned in subsection (2) of this section from time to time, but no such extension shall exceed a period of six months at any one time”.

The proposal extended all constitutional privileges assigned to the President and Governors to elected local government chairmen and Vice Chairmen.

It also required that, “a person elected to the office of the Chairman of a Local Government shall not begin to perform the functions of that office until he has declared his assets and liabilities as prescribed in the Constitution and has subsequently taken and subscribed the Oath of Allegiance and oath of office prescribed in the Seventh Schedule to this Constitution.

It also made provisions for the procedures for the removal of an elected Chairman or Vice Chairman, vesting such powers on the local government legislative council.

It states that, “The Chairman or Vice-Chairman of a Local Government may be removed from office in accordance with the provisions of this section.

“Whenever a notice of any allegation in writing signed by not less than one-third of the members of the Local Government council –

    (a) is presented to the Speaker of the Local Government council; (b) stating that the holder of such office is guilty of gross misconduct in the performance of the functions of his office, detailed particulars of which shall be specified, the Speaker of the Local Government council shall, within seven days of the receipt of the notice, cause a copy of the notice to be served on the holder of the office and on each member of the Local Government Council and shall also cause any statement made in reply to the allegation by the holder of the office, to be served on each member of the Local Government Council.

“Within fourteen days of the presentation of the notice to the Speaker of the Local Government Council (whether or not any statement was made by the holder of the office in reply to the allegation contained in the notice), the Local Government Council shall resolve by motion, without any debate, whether or not the allegation shall be investigated.

“A motion of the Local Government Council that the allegation be investigated shall not be declared as having been passed unless it is supported by the votes of not less than two-thirds majority of all the members of the Local Government Council.

“Within seven days of the passing of a motion under the foregoing provisions of this section, the Chief Judge of the State shall at the request of the Speaker of the Local Government Council, appoint a panel of seven persons who in his opinion are of unquestionable integrity, not being members of any public service, legislative house or political party, to investigate the allegation as provided in  this section.

“The holder of an office whose conduct is being investigated under this section shall have the right to defend himself in person or be represented before the panel by a legal practitioner of his own choice.

“A panel appointed under subsection 9(5) of this section shall –(a) have such powers and exercise its functions in accordance with such procedure as may be prescribed by the Local Government Legislative Council; and (b) within three months of its appointment, report its findings to the Local Government Legislative Council.

“Where the panel reports to the Local Government Legislative Council that the allegation has not been proved, no further proceedings shall be taken in respect of the matter.

“Where the report of the panel is that the allegation against the holder of the office has been proved, then within fourteen days of the receipt of the report, the Local Government Council shall consider the report, and if by a resolution of the local government legislative council, supported by not less than two-thirds majority of all its members, the report of the panel is adopted, then the holder of the office shall stand removed from office as from the date of the adoption of the report.

“No proceedings or determination of the panel or of the Local Government Legislative Council or any matter relating to such proceedings or determination shall be entertained or questioned in any court.”

Youths protest killings, other criminal activities in Kogi communities

Youths from Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area in Kogi state staged a protest on Friday against the worsening insecurity in their communities, highlighting persistent killings and other criminal activities.

The protesters, mostly from Bunuland, blocked a major road during the peaceful demonstration, chanting solidarity songs and holding placards with messages such as “Bunuland Bleeds” and “Why should we ask for permission to live?” to draw attention to the escalating violence and displacement of residents.

One protester lamented that dozens of communities had been completely abandoned due to repeated attacks.

“We have 44 communities in Bunuland. Those communities have been deserted—places like Kayetoro, Kiri, Ole, and others. The last attack in Ole claimed three lives, and many more have been killed over time,” the protester said, adding that fear and insecurity had forced residents to flee their ancestral homes.

It was gathered that despite the teargas by the police, the youths remained resolute, insisting on urgent intervention from the government and security agencies. “We are resolute. We are not leaving here,” the protester declared.

Residents of Kabba-Bunu and surrounding areas have repeatedly raised concerns over killings, kidnappings, and the occupation of farmlands, accusing authorities of failing to protect lives and property.

Terrorists Attack: Ondo monarch calls for vigilance, community cooperation

    • …police condemns attack, launches manhunt for the perpetrators
    • …as Aiyedatiwa orders intensive security patrol

The Olowo of Owo Kingdom and Chairman of the Ondo State Council of Traditional Rulers, His Imperial Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III has called on residents of Ipele to remain vigilant following the New Year’s Eve attack on a local police station.

In a statement released on Friday by his Special Assistant on Media, Sam Adewale, the monarch described the assault as “very sad and condemnable,” noting that it was intended to disrupt peace and spoil the festive spirit of the yuletide season.

Oba Ogunoye, who noted that no lives were lost in the attack, emphasized that the preservation of human life was a key relief despite the destruction of property.

He commiserated with the monarch of the community, the Nigeria Police Force, and the entire community, assuring them of his full support and solidarity during this difficult period.

The monarch urged citizens to be security-conscious and proactive, advising them to report any suspicious movements or unfamiliar faces to the nearest security agency or trusted community leaders.

He stressed that community cooperation with security agencies is crucial for protecting lives and property, adding that collective responsibility remains the most effective strategy against crime.

The statement added, “He prayed for divine protection over the people, security personnel, and the land, while expressing confidence that with unity, vigilance, cooperation with Security Agencies and God’s help, peace will continue to reign across Owo Local Government Area and Ondo State at large.”

While assessing the level of the attack on the Police Divisional Station, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Adebowale Lawal, vowed to clamp down on the terrorists behind the violent attack and destruction of the police facility.

The police boss, who visited the affected station in the company of other officers of the command, further affirmed that no life was lost and no church was destroyed during the attack.

He explained that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has already held a meeting with the security chiefs, which included the police, the military, the DSS, NSCDC, and the Amotekun Corps, in order to get a proper briefing on the attack.

“Following the meeting held with the governor, we will be able to assess the situation of what happened yesterday and come up with strategies that we will activate in ensuring this attack doesn’t occur again in our state.

“Also, let me correct this rumour on social media. No life was lost, and no church was attacked, but I want to assure you that we are up to the task. We are going to ensure that the perpetrators of this dastardly attack do not escape justice.

“Shortly after we leave here, we are going to meet again to continue with our deliberations, and that is going to be within the hands of the security agencies.

“You recall that prior to now, Ondo is one of the safest states in Nigeria. So if this happened yesterday, well, it’s something that we’ve been proactive about, but this time around, we are going to be reactive.”

He added, “At the end of the investigation, we will be able to come up with what and what was looted, and if it is a terrorist attack, well, I wouldn’t call it a terrorist attack because we’ve not made arrests. We’ve not ascertained the veracity of that information.

“By the time we make an arrest and complete our investigation, we will be able to come up with something, whether they are actually terrorists. But the good people of Ondo should be assured that we don’t have terrorists in Ondo State.

“The governor has given us a marching order that the perpetrators should be arrested in no time, and we have just commenced the investigation. At the end of the investigation, if we are arrested, we need to come up with who and who were behind the attack. So, it’s too premature for us to conclude that they were terrorists.”

Following the attack, Governor Aiyedatiwa explained that the attack occurred while many residents were attending night services to usher in 2026.

The governor said that upon receiving the report, he immediately contacted the police and the Brigade Commander of the army, instructing that security personnel be deployed to support officers on patrol and protect residents.

Aiyedatiwa, however, has directed intensified patrols across communities and forest areas, stressing that security remains a 24-hour responsibility, particularly during festive periods.

He noted that security operatives, including members of the Joint Operations Task Force and Amotekun Rangers, were already on patrol throughout the state and in forested areas.

“Just yesterday night, while a lot of citizens, some were in the church, praising God for the night to transit to the New Year. We had the ugly news about an attack by some unknown gunmen in our communities, precisely Ipele, where a police station was attacked.

“Immediately, I made a call through to the police and the Brigade Commander, and instruction was given that men should be deployed to the area to support the people in the area, especially those on patrol, because we always have our men, the security joint operation task force, on patrol at every point in time across the state.

“And also our forests, our men are there, especially the Amotekun rangers. So we have always been at a lot, but somehow they were able to beat, maybe beat the security or whatever happens. They were able to have access to the police station where an explosive was discharged, but no life was lost.

“The swift response of the security agencies helped the situation because nobody knew what their missions or intentions were, but they were able to carry out their mission or activity because maybe they had the intention of even going to some churches.

“Just like we had about three years ago, precisely June 2022, when some bandits or terrorists, if you like, attacked one of the churches, St. Francis Catholic Church, where lives were lost. But this time, no life was lost, and we give our thanks to God.

“It wasn’t what we should start the new year with, but you never can tell about the plans of these people. They look for times when people are relaxed, or they’re not expecting something to happen, especially in preparation for New Year celebrations. But on our side, the security agencies know that security is 24-7 work.

“They were able to move swiftly into the area, the patrol team, and some other men who were deployed. So no life was lost, only the police station that was raised through the explosion. No policeman lost his life.

“They were all alive and were able to join the other men in doing the patrol, and to ensure that they can carry out other criminal activities. So that’s the situation.”

The attack occurred barely 48 hours after the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as the Amotekun Corps, announced the arrest of 39 suspected terrorists in the state.

The Amotekun Commander, Adetunji Adeleye, while briefing journalists on Tuesday in Akure, had said the suspects were arrested at the Elegbeka area of Ose Local Government Area after allegedly fleeing Sokoto State following United States airstrikes targeting militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) group in north-western Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the attack comes two months after a leaked memo by the Department of State Services (DSS) addressed to the 32 artillery brigade of the Nigerian Army in Akure, revealing that members of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) are planning to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo.

The memo stated that intelligence confirmed plans by members of the ISWAP terrorist group to carry out coordinated attacks on communities in Ondo and Kogi States anytime soon.

“Some identified target locations within Ondo State include Eriti Akoko, Oyin Akoko communities in Akoko North West LGA, and Owo town in Owo LGA, respectively.

“It was further gathered that the groups have commenced surveillance on potential soft targets in the above-mentioned locations.

“Consequently, there is a need to scale up the level of security alertness in the various communities to forestall any untoward situation.”

Although the state government had said the leaked security memo from the DSS warning of a possible terrorist attack in the state was “part of regular intelligence reports.”

Idowu Ajanaku, the Ondo commissioner for information and orientation, had said such intelligence reports are routine and form part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to identify and prevent potential threats while ensuring the public that the intelligence is being taken seriously, with appropriate precautions already in place to safeguard residents.

Ajanaku emphasised the importance of vigilance and cooperation between the public and security agencies to effectively respond to any threat.

FG commits to reviving steel sector in 2026 – Audu

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s steel sector as a key engine for industrial growth, job creation, and national development in 2026, the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Audu, has declared.

Delivering his ministerial New Year message to journalists in Abuja on Friday, Audu described 2026 as a year to translate reforms into measurable production outcomes, strengthen local content, generate sustainable employment, and position the steel industry to support broader economic development.

Reflecting on 2025, the Minister noted that deliberate efforts were made to reposition the sector through policy reforms, improved institutional frameworks, and sustained engagement with stakeholders, despite fiscal challenges, including delays in the release of the 2025 Budget. He emphasized that the Ministry maintained momentum through prudent use of the 2024 Appropriation and policy-driven interventions.

Among the milestones achieved last year was the successful hosting of the inaugural National Steel Summit, which convened industry stakeholders to chart a new course for the revival of Nigeria’s steel industry. Audu also reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to completing and operationalizing the Ajaokuta Steel Complex through ongoing engagements with prospective investors.

The Minister highlighted additional initiatives, including facilitating investments to improve energy supply and steel production, such as plans for mini-LNG plants within the Ajaokuta Steel Territory, which have attracted growing confidence from both local and international investors. He noted the emergence of new steel projects, the expansion of existing plants, and renewed efforts to rehabilitate key national metallurgical assets.
