Oborevwori pledges road safety over sanctions on articulated truck accidents in Delta

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritising road safety over punitive sanctions in addressing recurring accidents involving articulated trucks, particularly near the Ubu Bridge axis in Ogwashi-Uku along the newly constructed Ughelli–Asaba dual carriageway.

The State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, noting that the government is set to implement firm and targeted measures to curb the rising number of accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles along the corridor.

According to the Commissioner, the Oborevwori administration’s strategy focuses on strengthening safety enforcement rather than imposing restrictions that could disrupt the free flow of goods and services. Planned interventions include stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, enhanced speed monitoring, and improved operational checks on articulated trucks using the route.

Izeze also called for collective responsibility in preventing future accidents, appealing to professionals, road safety experts, and concerned members of the public to voluntarily contribute practical, public-spirited suggestions aimed at achieving zero accidents on the affected stretch.

He stressed that the appeal was not for consultancy services, but for genuine contributions focused on saving lives and preserving the road infrastructure.

He explained that the renewed safety drive followed a series of accidents involving articulated trucks on the corridor, which have raised concerns among motorists and residents despite the road’s recent completion and improved aesthetics.

The Commissioner revealed that the most recent incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, December 30, 2025, bringing the total number of recorded articulated truck accidents on the Ogwashi-Uku–Asaba stretch to seventeen (17) since the road was completed.

The accident occurred near the Ubu Bridge, an area characterised by smooth pavement and a modern drainage system designed to channel runoff from the surrounding Ogwashi-Uku hills into drains leading to the Ubu River.

Eyewitnesses said the truck lost control while approaching the bridge, tilted, and partially obstructed the carriageway. No casualties were recorded.

The driver reportedly attributed the incident to mechanical failure, claiming that the truck’s gear selector failed to engage a lower gear while navigating the bridge approach.

He dismissed suggestions of fatigue, describing the occurrence as an act of destiny.

However, the explanation has done little to ease public concern, given the frequency of similar accidents on the same stretch of road.

The Commissioner further said: “Despite the installation of clearly visible warning signs and speed limit notices before and after the bridge on both approaches installed months ago at the directive of Governor Oborevwori, many articulated truck drivers continue to disregard traffic regulations.

“Governor Oborevwori has consistently maintained that the state must avoid actions that could be perceived as restricting the free movement of goods and services, in line with global best practices.

“His administration has therefore prioritised improved compliance, driver discipline, and road safety measures over outright restrictions on the movement of heavy-duty vehicles.”

The Ogwashi-Uku–Asaba corridor has emerged as one of the busiest interstate routes in the South-South region, serving as a major transit link for articulated trucks travelling from the North, East, and South-West through Asaba and Ughelli to Warri, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Akwa Ibom, and Calabar.

This heavy traffic has placed considerable pressure on the road, even as the project continues to attract commendation for its quality and contribution to regional connectivity.

Despite the incidents, residents have acknowledged the broader impact of Governor Oborevwori’s infrastructure drive, noting that the quality of the road reflects the administration’s commitment to people-centred governance.

As investigations into the latest accident continue, stakeholders have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved driver discipline, and sustained public awareness to ensure that the benefits of the road project are not undermined by avoidable mishaps.

Customs, NDLEA smash smuggling ring, seize 30.1kg of cocaine in Lagos

     By Oluwakemi Dauda

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Apapa Area Command, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has smashed an international drug trafficking ring that specialises in bringing Cocaine and other prohibited items into the country.

The joint enforcement, which was carried out in Lagos on Friday, led to the interception of 30 slabs of cocaine weighing 30.1 kilograms concealed onboard the MV Aruna, a Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, in Apapa port.

The seizure occurred on Friday, January 2, 2026, the first working day of the New Year at the Greenview Terminal within Apapa Port, Lagos.

The illicit substance was carefully hidden aboard the ship, underscoring the sophisticated tactics employed by smugglers attempting to exploit the nation’s busiest seaport.

The Area Controller of Apapa Command, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, commended the officers from both agencies for their vigilance and professionalism.

“This achievement reflects the strong inter-agency synergy between federal government entities and our commitment to intelligence-led enforcement,” he stated. “While criminal elements seek to outsmart us, our officers remain one step ahead, ensuring no smuggling attempt, whether disguised as import, export, or transit cargo, succeeds under my watch.”

Oshoba described the interception as a bold statement for 2026, reaffirming the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards illicit trade. In line with established protocols, the NDLEA has taken possession of the seized cocaine for further investigation and potential prosecution of those involved.

The latest bust marks the third major drug interception by the joint NCS-NDLEA team in recent weeks. Barely two weeks ago, the agencies seized 25.5kg of cocaine hidden in five bags aboard another vessel based on intelligence.

Also, on 11 December 2025, 1,187kg of “Canadian Loud”, a premium and highly expensive strain of cannabis, was packaged in 2,374 parcels across 55 bags and concealed within imported vehicles in a 1x40ft container.

The Area Controller reiterates that the Apapa Port Command remains steadfast in its mandate to facilitate legitimate trade while safeguarding national security.

JUST IN: NNPP dissolves Kano executive committees

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved the party’s executive committees in Kano State from the state level down to the ward level.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, who said the action was taken in line with the NNPP constitution.

Johnson disclosed that caretaker committees to oversee the party’s affairs in the interim would be announced shortly.

He added that the party leadership appreciated members who had served in various capacities at the state, local government, and ward levels, assuring them that their contributions to the growth of the NNPP were recognised.

The move came amid rising tension within the party following reports of a planned defection by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a development strongly opposed by the NNPP’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Kwankwaso had earlier warned party members against defection, insisting that political betrayal does not lead to lasting success.

In a viral video from a recent party meeting, the former Kano State governor said he was not surprised by the alleged moves, stressing that history offers clear lessons to politicians who abandon the party.

“I want to remind those who left us that nobody has betrayed us and succeeded. Political history is very clear on this matter. Those who think they can rise by betraying the people and the movement they came from should reflect deeply,” he stated.

Kwankwaso also pointed to the large turnout of supporters at the gathering as evidence that the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement continue to enjoy strong grassroots support across Kano State.

  • River Park Estate: AGF directs termination of charge against Ghanaian investors, Sam Jonah, and 4 others

River Park Estate: AGF directs termination of charge against Ghanaian investors, Sam Jonah, and 4 others

    …orders investigation of Odili

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has cleared Ghanaian investors and their Nigerian lawyer of any wrongdoing in connection with the ownership of the River Park Estate, Abuja, and directed an end to all intimidation of the investors and subscribers of the estate.

In a special report signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mohammed Baba Abubakar, dated December 30, 2025, the Attorney General said the release followed the completion of a comprehensive review of the case files and investigation conducted by the Nigeria Police in the allegations against the investors.

The Ghanaian investors are Samuel Esson Jonah, Kojo Ansah Mensah, Victor Quanoo, and their Nigerian lawyer, Abu Arome Esq.

The Attorney General’s report followed a petition by the CEO of JonahCapital Nigeria and Houses for Africa, Kojo Ansah Mensah, dated May 7, 2025, with other referenced correspondences, which prompted the AGF’s inquiry involving all interested parties and the police.

Consequently, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, through the DPP, dismissed the allegations of forgery, fraudulent activities, and other offences against the Ghanaian investors and their lawyer, which was the basis for the unlawful expropriation of their shares to former shareholders of the company by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Continuing, the AGF’s report states: “a) That no prima facie case of forgery, and other related offences as contained in Charge No: CRJ402/25 has been established against the aforementioned individuals, namely, Mr Samuel Esson Jonah, Mr Kojo Ansah Mensah, Mr Victor Quainoo and Mr Abu Arome Esq.

“b) That the investigation and findings by the ‘Special Investigation Panel on Petitions relating to Houses for Africa Nigeria Limited, Jonah Capital Nigeria Limited and River Park Estate Lugbe’ dated 28th March 2025, is valid, comprehensive, unbiased, and is thus affirmed.

“c) That the investigation and findings by the IGP Monitoring Unit (led by Akin Fakorede) were highly misleading, disregarding the burden and standard of proof necessary to establish criminal liability, and inappropriately attempted to characterize a commercial disagreement involving ownership, shareholdings and contractual obligations as a criminal matter, which is contrary to Section 8(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

“d) That the utterances and action of the IGP Monitoring Unit and Force Public Relations Officer ACP Muyiwa Adejobi (as he then was) during the press conference on the 27th of June 2025, where Paul Odili, Dr Adeniran Ogunmuyiwa and others, were declared and identified as the ‘owners’ and ‘managers’ of River Park Estate without judicial determination, are inappropriate and in excess of the lawful authority of the police. The Nigerian Police do not possess the jurisdiction to independently determine land ownership or adjudicate alleged breaches of contract and must therefore avoid making such prejudicial statements.

“e) It has been observed that allegations of destruction of property, criminal intimidation, and assault perpetrated against staff, agents, customers, and certain residents of River Park Estate, allegedly by thugs acting pursuant to the directives of Paul Odili remains uninvestigated.

“3. Consequent on the foregoing, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation has directed the termination of the case against Mr Samuel Esson Jonah, Mr Kojo Ansah Mensah, Mr Victor Quainoo, and Mr Abu Arome.

“4 Additionally, the Nigeria Police Force is requested to investigate the complaints of criminal intimidation, assault, and destruction of property alleged against Paul Odili and provide a detailed investigation report for the consideration of the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation.

“Furthermore, consistent with its statutory mandate to protect lives and property, the Nigeria Police is requested to allow peaceful enjoyment and maintain security for all residents of the River Park Estate.”

On the unlawful expropriation of shares, the Attorney General of the Federation directed the CAC to immediately rescind all administrative measures taken on the basis of the now discredited report of the IGP Monitoring Unit of the Nigerian Police Force, and “to refrain from taking any action that would undermine the authority and integrity of the courts.”

Reacting to the latest finding by the Nigerian Government, the CEO Mensah commended the AGF for rising to the occasion and discharging his constitutional responsibilities with courage and fidelity to the rule of law.

“The timely intervention of the HAGF has restored confidence and renewed hope among foreign investors and the business community that Nigeria remains a country governed by laws, due process, and institutional accountability,” he said.

“We also extend our profound appreciation to His Excellency President Ahmed Tinubu (President of The Federal Republic of Nigeria), His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama (President of the Republic of Ghana), Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa (Minister of Foreign Affairs), His Excellency Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed (Ghana High Commissioner to Nigeria), the entire staff of the Ghana Mission to Nigeria for the steadfast support.

“We equally extend our gratitude to all residents of River Park who stood by us throughout this trying period. Your solidarity, patience, and confidence in lawful resolution were invaluable.

“We thank our legal team led by Mr S. l. Ameh (SAN), Chief Paul Harris Ogbole (SAN), Mr Adedayo Adedeji (SAN), Mr Lawrence Alobi Esq, Mr Abu Arome Esq, and their respective chambers.

Above All we want to also thank our dedicated staff for enduring the turbulent period of violence, difficulties, and standing with the company.

“We reaffirm that we are, and will continue to be, law-abiding foreign investors. Our commitment to Nigeria is unwavering, and we will continue to contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the Nigerian economy.

“We trust that this episode will ultimately reinforce Nigeria’s commitment to justice, transparency, and economic progress.”

    Signed: Kojo Mensah, CEO.

Fubara can’t be trusted, says loyalist Ewor

…as PDP factions in Rivers collapse to Wike’s camp

Factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Dr. Nname Ewor, on Friday announced the dissolution of his faction and its merger into the Aaron Chukwemeka-led committee, aligned with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Ewor, who was previously loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, made the announcement during Wike’s “thank you” visit to Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) Local Government Area.

“Today, I am handing over the chairmanship and leadership of my faction to the Aaron Chukwemeka-led caretaker committee. PDP is no longer factionalised in Rivers. PDP is under one chairman, and under one leadership, that is the leadership of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike,” Ewor said.

He explained that he left Fubara’s camp due to a lack of trust, alleging that the governor failed to honour agreements mediated twice by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“If the president mediated twice, that means you cannot be trusted. Can such a leader be trusted? We can’t trust him,” Ewor stated.

Ewor also dismissed claims that Wike had intimidated or undermined his leadership, stressing that the minister had not interfered with his office.

Earlier, ONELGA Chairman, Chukwu Ogbogu, commended Wike for the visit and for his development interventions in the local government during his tenure as governor.

He noted that, beyond personal benefits as a two-time commissioner and current council chairman, other sons and daughters from the area also benefited from appointments at the state and federal levels.

“I cannot thank you enough for this and many other things you have done for us,” Ogbogu said, pledging continued support and loyalty to Wike.

Similarly, Nkemjika Ezekwe, member of the House of Representatives for Onelga II State Constituency, described Wike as a “women empowerment advocate,” noting that he has given Rivers women a voice and financial independence.

Felix Obuah, Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) and an indigene of the area, also credited Wike for his personal and professional growth, saying the people of ONELGA would forever remain grateful to the minister for his bridge-building and leadership across Rivers State.

Kayode Adeniyi, the 47-year-old driver of the ill-fated Lexus SUV that crashed on Monday, killing two of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua’s closest friends, has been arraigned.

He was charged to Sagamu Magistrate Court for manslaughter, reckless driving and others, The Nation gathered.

Recall the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had blamed the driver for overspeeding and wrongful overtaking, which reportedly led to the car crashing into a stationary truck on the highway.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Oluseyi Babaseyi, in a statement on Friday, noted that the case has been adjourned to 20th January, 2026.

The Nation reports that Adeniyi, a long-standing member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was discharged from the hospital in Lagos late on New Year’s Eve and driven two hours to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, where the fatal crash occurred.

BUK VC lauds Class ’92 on 33rd anniversary, aims top global ranking

The Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Professor Haruna Musa, has commended the institution’s Class of 1992 for its “uninterrupted 10-year tradition” of philanthropy.

Speaking at the group’s 33rd Anniversary dinner and 10th reunion, he lauded a fresh ₦5 million donation from the alumni to the university’s Indigent Students’ Account, noting that such partnerships are vital for BUK’s growth.

The VC outlined his vision to propel BUK into the top 500 universities globally, highlighting the 2026 World University Rankings by Times Higher Education, which ranked BUK as the 3rd best university in Nigeria and the premier in Northern Nigeria.

To address operational challenges, Professor Musa announced advancements in infrastructure and energy independence. The Rural Electrification Agency has commenced a 3.5-megawatt solar plant upgrade, with plans to scale capacity to 6MW.

President of MAAUN Kano, Professor Mohammad Israr, disclosed that the university had recorded several milestones, including becoming the first institution in Northern Nigeria to secure professional corporate membership of the NIPR.

Israr described the achievement as evidence of the university’s commitment to ethical communication and professional excellence, assuring that the Mass Communication Department remains focused on producing industry-ready graduates.

In honour of Gwarzo’s 48th birthday, a public lecture in Kano, themed “AI and the Emerging Trends of Online Newspapers: Reflections on the Ethics of Journalism,” examined the influence of artificial intelligence on media practice and the need to uphold standards.

Delivering the keynote address, award-winning PRNigeria fact-checker, Mohammed Dahiru Lawal, observed that journalism is entering a hyper-realistic information era, where a growing proportion of content consumed by the public is synthetic or AI-generated.

He noted that AI-generated videos, images and audio clips are increasingly being used to spread misinformation, particularly during security crises and politically sensitive periods, sometimes amplified by news platforms operating with weak editorial control.

Chairman of the Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo Foundation, Dr. Musa Sufi, cautioned journalists against over-dependence on artificial intelligence, stressing that technology should complement—not replace—professional competence.

“AI is here to help professionals do their work better, but it cannot replace human judgment and skills,” Sufi told the well-attended gathering. “Journalists must continue to improve themselves and remain capable, even without technological tools.”

The convener, Adnan Mukhtar, said the lecture celebrated his mentor, whom he called a distinguished academic and philanthropist. “Prof Gwarzo’s investment in education and human capital development—culminating in MAAUN the establishment—is rare and exemplary,” he added.

Gwarzo was recognised as Edupreneur of the Year at the 2025 Arewa Stars Awards, while Mass Communication students of MAAUN also clinched honours at the recent Campus Journalism and Young Communicator Awards.
