Akwa Ibom CJ swears in 16 notaries

The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Justice Ekaete F. Obot, has sworn in sixteen newly appointed notaries public.

The lawyers were recommended by the Chief Judge and subsequently approved by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun (GCON).

Those sworn in include: Iniobong Udo Uko Esq, Vivian Ijeoma Uzoma Esq, Benjamin Emmanuel Adams Esq, Emmanuel Amos Umana Esq, Ime Aquaowa Essien Esq, Edieke Paul Jumbo Esq, Isaac Tsado Oshoriame Ephraim Esq, and Samuel Akpadiagha Etuk Esq.

Others are Ndifreke Peter Udoh Esq, Akan Obotowo Esq, Sembenge Nse Ekanem Esq, Nsima Ndifreke Akpan Esq, Ifueko Ebi Ikinmwin Esq, Rotimi Omoniyi Oniyesan Esq, Ubong Edem Offiong Esq, and Lazarus Daniel Aniezi Esq. Marcellinus Marshal Udokang Esq was, however, absent.

After administering the oath prescribed in the Notaries Public Act 2023, Justice Obot reminded the new notaries of the weight of the responsibility they now carry. She charged them to exercise their duties faithfully, prepare contracts and instruments transparently, and refrain from diminishing any aspect of such documents without the knowledge and consent of the parties involved.

She further cautioned them against attesting to any act, contract, or instrument tainted by fraud or violence, emphasizing that they must always act uprightly and justly in accordance with the oath they had taken.

Shortly after the swearing-in ceremony, the Akwa Ibom State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), comrade Elder Sunny James, accompanied by members of the State executive, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge.

Speaking on behalf of the union, the chairman commended Justice Obot for her dedication to improving workers’ welfare. He explained that the visit became necessary as the union sought her intervention in appealing to Governor Umo Eno on behalf of about 600 judiciary workers, those in other sectors, who have remained casual staff for over twenty years, earning a meagre fifteen thousand naira monthly. He described the situation as unacceptable, especially at a time when the State Government is set to recruit 4,000 new workers into the civil service.

The NLC appealed to Justice Obot to encourage the Governor to prioritize these long-serving casual workers in the recruitment process.

In her response, the Chief Judge expressed appreciation for the visit and for the union’s concern for workers’ welfare, particularly those in the Judiciary. She acknowledged the deplorable condition of the affected workers and disclosed that the Governor had already allocated about one thousand recruitment slots to the Judiciary.

She, however, noted that if the six hundred casual workers were absorbed first, only four hundred positions would be left. She expressed optimism that the Governor, whom she described as a listening leader, would heed her request for an additional one thousand slots, even though that number would still fall short of the Judiciary’s needs.

Justice Obot further explained that once the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC), which is constitutionally empowered to recruit judiciary staff, is fully constituted, it will commence its statutory duties. The NLC concluded the visit by describing the Chief Judge as “the Pillar of Workers in Akwa Ibom State.”

Alaafin meets Marwa, assures NDLEA of support, collaboration in fight against illicit drugs

    • …why we need traditional rulers to join the crusade against substance abuse -Marwa

The Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has assured the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), of support and collaboration in his renewed mandate to curb the scourge of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking in the country.

The revered traditional ruler gave the assurance when he led two other royal fathers: Oloro of Oro, Oba Joel Olaniyan Olatoye, and Olusin of Ijara Isin, Oba Ademola Julius Ajibola, on a courtesy visit to Marwa at the Agency’s national headquarters in Abuja on Friday.

Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja, Femi Babafemi, made this known in a statement on Friday.

The monarch said he was proud of Marwa’s trajectory as Atunluse of Yoruba land.

He said, “To be kind with you, we are proud of you. You’re in this position at the moment not just by chance, but because of your devotion, your commitment. You have this amiable character.

“That’s why you are able to govern Borno and Lagos State, and you have always been a performer. Another thing that I can’t forget about you is the legacy of Keke Marwa that you brought to Nigeria.”

Responding directly to the charge by the NDLEA boss for traditional rulers to support ongoing efforts against drug abuse in the country, the Alaafin assured of his readiness to mobilise his colleagues to work with the Agency.

“I’ve heard your message, and the same thing with some of my colleagues here and some of my other traditional rulers. We are ready to collaborate with you. I have to tell you, we are at the grassroots, we are close to the community people. We know a lot about what’s going on.

“So, I’m using this opportunity to tell you that we are ready. We are more than ready to work with you and to give you all the necessary support to make sure that you are successful in this job. We can tell you that anytime you need us, we will always be there for you,” Oba Owoade stated.

In his welcome remark, Marwa congratulated the Alaafin on ascending the throne of his forefathers. He charged him and other traditional rulers across the country to leverage their influence at the local level to work with NDLEA to stamp out substance abuse in communities.

In his words, “The drug scourge in Nigeria is at an unacceptable level, and from the drug use survey report of 2018, we find that close to 15 million Nigerians aged 15 to 64 use drugs. It’s a big problem, and we have been mandated by President Tinubu to stand up, fight the drug scourge, arrest those responsible, prosecute them, and seize their assets, the traffickers. And on this assignment, we would like to call on the traditional institutions because it’s a very, very important institution.

“Nigerians respect the traditional institutions. Whoever you are in Nigeria, you still come from somewhere. And when you go back to that place, you pay homage to whoever is the leader of the community. And so when the traditional leader speaks, it carries weight. And equally, we plead for traditional leaders to also engage the religious leaders in charge of churches and mosques in their domains, who should do serious advocacy against the use of drugs. The NDLEA is always prepared to work with the traditional institution.”

He said the Agency will also appreciate getting information about drug dealers in local communities from traditional rulers because of the risk they pose to many youths and their families.

“We really appreciate this collaboration, and I know for a fact that if we can control drug use, even the criminalities will come down because all the people that are kidnappers and the insurgents, terrorists, bandits everywhere, they use drugs first to charge themselves up, to make them high.”

He expressed appreciation to Alaafin for the visit and wished him a long, successful reign in good health, peace, development, and prosperity in the entire Oyo Kingdom.

Publisher recounts how govt policies affected entrepreneurs in 2025

Ibadan-based publisher, Mr. Idris Alimi, has said that 2025 stands out as the most challenging year for entrepreneurs in Nigeria, attributing the difficulties to government policies, foreign exchange instability, and rising inflation.

Alimi, the Chief Executive Officer of Max African Publishers Limited, spoke on Thursday during the company’s end-of-year celebration in Ibadan.

The event featured awards, gifts, and car presentations to outstanding staff and was attended by several dignitaries, including Supol Ayodele Ayiti, Managing Director of Orbits Homes and Properties; Otunba Araro of Araromi; Hon. Oladimeji Obisesan, Branch Manager of First Bank, Yemetu Ibadan; Dr. Adegbenle Adedeji, father of the CEO; Alhaji Ismail Alimi; Mrs. Suliyat Alimi, wife of the CEO; and Director of Finance, Legacy Starts of Ibadan, Mr. Safiu Adekunle.

Speaking with journalists, Alimi said many business owners struggled through the year due to high production costs, unpredictable government decisions, and cash flow constraints.

“This year has been very challenging for entrepreneurs because of inflation, government policies, and cash flow issues. Many of the policies are not favourable to those of us in the publishing industry,” he said.

He explained that the rising cost of materials, diesel, and overheads placed immense pressure on businesses.

“In January, I kept wondering how we would cope. When you think of salaries, production costs, and other expenses, you realise it is only God helping us,” he added.

Alimi said the celebration was organised to appreciate and motivate staff for their dedication during the difficult year. “We are trying to encourage our staff so they can put in more effort in the near future,” he said.

In his remarks, Supol Ayodele Ayiti advised workers and Nigerians to remain security-conscious. “Many things are happening in the country. Always observe and be conscious of your environment,” he warned.

The gathering was attended by staff, family members, associates, friends, and residents of neighbouring streets in Oke Ado and Ososami, where the company operates.

The Cross River State Government has partnered with Mesotho Group for the construction of the Calabar Ultramodern International Market, a landmark project set to transform the city’s commercial landscape.

At the signing ceremony, the Commissioner for Commerce, Dr. Abigail Orok, welcomed Mesotho Group, describing the moment as “glorious” for Cross River State.

She congratulated the group on emerging as the preferred bidder following a rigorous selection process and assured them of the government’s full support.

“By the grace of God Almighty, we have been able to sign the agreement for the construction of Calabar Ultramodern Market. This has been a vision of this government since Governor Bassey Otu, assumed office,” Orok said.

The Commissioner said the market will provide modern facilities designed to improve the trading experience for both buyers and sellers.

“Within the next two years, Calabar will have an international market with all the facilities a modern market should have, including a jetty, top-notch security, and a water view. This will create a clean, organized, and safe environment for traders and shoppers,” she explained.

The market will be sited at Esit Ebom community in Calabar South, with over 40 plots already secured for the project.

Dedicated sections will be allocated for various traders, ensuring an orderly, modern marketplace. Orok added that the market, when operational, would put an end to the popular Watt Market, which has continued to be an eyesore in the beautiful city of Calabar.

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Justice, the Permanent Secretary, Orok Okon, described the signing as the culmination of a long journey.

“Today we have put pen to paper and sealed the agreement under the PPP arrangement. We look forward to Mesotho Group doing their part, while we provide an enabling environment and all that is required from government to ensure this arrangement works. I trust that the agreement and its timelines will be adhered to, and at the end, we will be grateful to the governor who made this possible,” he said.

He commended the state government for its resilience and focus in driving the project, adding that such commitment will benefit both the people of Cross River and investors alike.

  • WHO flags deepening poverty as major barrier to healthcare access in Africa

WHO flags deepening poverty as major barrier to healthcare access in Africa

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised fresh concern over the scale of financial hardship caused by healthcare costs across Africa, warning that millions are being pushed deeper into poverty because they cannot afford basic medical treatment.

The latest global Universal Health Coverage (UHC) report shows that in 2022, more than 423 million people in Africa faced financial hardship due to out-of-pocket health spending, with over 384 million pushed into or further into poverty.

Africa also accounts for over 20 percent of the world’s population experiencing financial distress from medical bills and nearly a quarter of global health-driven poverty.

Out-of-pocket payments still dominate health financing across the continent. In 31 countries, they make up more than a quarter of total health expenditure; in 11 countries, more than half; and in two countries, more than 70 percent.

According to the organization, these pressures force families into agonizing choices that undermine well-being and widen inequality.

Marking Universal Health Coverage Day 2025, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, in his message on Friday, said the figures reflect a crisis that demands urgent political action.

“Today, as we mark Universal Health Coverage Day under the banner Unaffordable health costs? We’re sick of it; we are reminded that health is not a privilege for the few. It is a fundamental human right and should be accessible to all,” he said.

He warned that for too many people, the cost of care determines whether they seek treatment, delay it, or avoid it completely, noting, “These are not statistics. They are the lived realities of households selling assets, postponing care, or slipping deeper into vulnerability.”

He noted that financial barriers continue to pit essential care against basic survival needs, forcing impossible choices between care and food, between medicines and school fees, between dignity and survival.

Despite these challenges, Janabi pointed to areas of progress, noting that between 2015 and 2022/23, the African Region recorded improvements across all components of the UHC Service Coverage Index, including maternal and child health, infectious and non-communicable diseases, and access to care.

He added that Africa achieved the world’s strongest gains in NCD service coverage, largely due to a decline in tobacco use. “These advances show what is possible with sustained commitment,” he said.

However, he cautioned that progress remains uneven and that financial protection is still the region’s most persistent barrier, stressing that women, children, older persons, and rural households continue to bear the highest burden of health costs.

“High health costs continue to undermine efforts to reduce poverty, prevent disability, and increase survival,” he said.

Calling for urgent reforms, Dr Janabi urged governments, partners, and civil society to accelerate efforts to make healthcare affordable for everyone.

He said priorities should include increasing domestic investment in health, expanding universal prepayment and risk-pooling systems, strengthening primary healthcare, and investing in the health workforce, facilities, supply chains, and data systems to guarantee not just access to care but access to quality care.

He also called for stronger accountability and the use of disaggregated data to ensure resources reach underserved communities.

“With new regional and global evidence in hand, 2025 offers a pivotal opportunity to accelerate financial protection reforms and advance health for all,” he said, adding that the WHO African Region stands ready to support governments with policy guidance, technical expertise, and data-driven decision-making.

Dr Janabi urged African countries to move from commitment to concrete implementation, adding, “Let’s turn commitment into action. Let’s build resilient, inclusive, and equitable health systems that shield people from financial hardship – systems that uphold dignity, expand opportunity, and ensure that every person can exercise their right to health, without financial barriers.”

He said this year’s UHC Day reaffirms a collective continental pledge, “On UHC Day 2025, we renew our shared promise, ‘Health for All. No One Left Behind.”

  • NIPOST to deepen digital inclusion with donations of devices from KOICA

NIPOST to deepen digital inclusion with donations of devices from KOICA

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) would deepen its delivery of digital inclusion and promote service delivery across all economic sectors for enhanced Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Postmaster General of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of NIPOST, Tola Odeyemi, gave the assurance in Abuja shortly after she received equipment donations from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The Korea Agency made a donation of 350 NIMC-certified Android National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment devices to enhance the capacity of NIPOST and ensure that its services are spread to underserved communities and areas with difficult terrains in the country.

Odeyemi, who received the KOICA team led by the Country Director, Mr. Eunsub Kim, at the NIPOST Corporate Headquarters, Abuja, praised KOICA for its commitment to effective and efficient digital services in Nigeria.

She described the intervention as a strategic investment in Nigeria’s digital future, noting that the devices would significantly enhance NIPOST’s capacity to deliver accessible and inclusive NIN registration services nationwide—particularly in underserved and hard-to-reach communities.

The NIPOST boss said the gesture aligned with the Federal Government’s mandate to provide nationwide access to essential public services and other ventures that would improve the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

She said NIPOST’s extensive national footprint positioned the organization as a critical enabler of inclusive digital identity enrollment and a key contributor to Nigeria’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The KOICA Country Director commended NIPOST for its strategic contributions to National Digital development, stating that the devices were provided under KOICA’s ongoing projects.

Kim, who listed the project as “Building Foundations Towards Digital Governance in Nigeria,” disclosed that the devices came fully equipped with pre-installed enrolment Software Licenses, alongside training and delivery support to ensure smooth deployment and effective utilization.

Mr. Kim stated that KOICA remains committed to supporting Nigeria’s Digital Governance efforts and ensuring that citizens across the country have easier access to essential identity services.

He said the intervention forms part of a four-year initiative (2022–2026) aimed at achieving key Digital Governance milestones, including the update of Nigeria’s e-Government Master Plan to Version 2.0, development of enterprise architecture frameworks for Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), digital capacity building at National and Sub-national levels, and the creation of Nigeria’s first single-window Government Service Portal (GSP).

He noted that as the forthcoming GSP will rely heavily on NIN authentication, NIPOST’s enhanced enrolment capacity places it in a strategic position to support citizens in accessing future digital public services.

Consequently, the KOICA Country Director requested NIPOST’s collaboration in onboarding at least one NIPOST digital service onto the GSP and encouraged the designation of a focal person to liaise closely with Galaxy Backbone Limited to ensure seamless coordination.

KOICA, the Grant Aid Agency of the Government of the Republic of Korea, has been a longstanding development partner to Nigeria since 2008, supporting initiatives in e-government, governance reforms, digital capacity building, and ICT infrastructure development across the country.

The donation of the 350 NIN enrolment devices further reinforced NIPOST’s expanding role in Nigeria’s Digital identity ecosystem and underscored its commitment to improving citizens’ access to convenient, efficient, and inclusive NIN registration services nationwide.

Why I advocate for single-term governance system, by Gov. Bago

    • …inaugurated new commissioners, LG chairmen, and vice chairpersons

Niger State Governor, Umaru Mohammed Bago, has advocated a single-term governance system for Nigeria, arguing that it would make leaders more decisive and strengthen governance outcomes.

Speaking on Friday in Minna during the inauguration of Commissioners, Chairmen, and Vice Chairpersons of local government councils, and board members, Bago said many leaders postpone key decisions because they anticipate a second term.

“I am an advocate of a single term of governance. Unfortunately, we are back to politics, and everything in Nigeria is being politicised. There are things I would have done if I were in one term, but I am deferring them till after the elections,” he said.

He noted that some underperforming officials should have been removed, but he could not do so due to political considerations.

“These people have failed their examinations several times; they cannot be promoted, and they are a burden on the system. If I had a single term, I would have been more decisive. Everyone is procrastinating for tomorrow,” he added.

Bago also pledged that women would hold 50 per cent of chairmanship positions in the next local government elections, describing himself as a strong advocate for women’s inclusion in governance.

On national security, the governor reiterated his support for state policing, saying it remains the most realistic solution to rising insecurity. “State police is a reality. We need to abandon aggrandisement for progression. It is high time we embraced community policing,” he said.

He prayed for the rescue of the remaining abducted pupils of St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri, and for lasting peace across Niger State and the country.

Addressing the newly sworn-in appointees, Bago said their selection was deliberate and based on competence, urging them to work towards the success of the administration’s “New Niger” agenda.

He stressed that the agenda is a long-term vision aimed at building a sustainable state where citizens enjoy the full dividends of governance. “The new Niger dream is not rhetorical. It is an aspiration and a vision that one day we will be mentioned globally as the best state in Nigeria and in Africa because of our resources,” he said.

Secretary to the State Government, Abubakar Usman, described the inauguration as a renewed commitment to public service, noting that all appointees were chosen based on proven capacity. He urged them to embrace collaboration and leadership to achieve the government’s ambitious goals.

She noted that the institution has held 39 convocation ceremonies, producing thousands of National Diploma and Higher National Diploma graduates, as well as Higher School Certificate holders who advanced to universities across the country.

The Rector highlighted the institution’s strong performance in accreditation, attributing its success to Governor Makinde’s consistent financial support for programme accreditation and development. She added that the governor has encouraged the institution to secure full accreditation for all its courses.

“In April this year, the institution presented a total of 42 courses for accreditation to the NBTE, and we successfully scaled through all,” she said.

She further disclosed that the institution has also been approved to introduce new programmes, including ND Food Science and Technology, ND Transport Planning and Management, ND Crime Management, and HND Science Laboratory Technology, among others.
