  • Lagos security model standard for sub-national security architecture — APC

Lagos security model standard for sub-national security architecture — APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State says the state security vision has evolved into Nigeria’s most effective sub-national security framework after two decades of consistent reform and investment.

In a statement on Friday in Lagos, the party’s Spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, said Lagos had shown that security success depended on sustained planning, political will and collaboration.

According to him, the state’s security structure— built from the tenure of former Governor Bola Tinubu to that of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu—has delivered relative peace and stability despite Lagos  being Nigeria’s most densely populated and economically active state.

Oladejo said: “Lagos stands today as the gold standard of what purposeful leadership can achieve.

“From Tinubu to Sanwo-Olu, we have seen security treated not as rhetoric but as deliberate and sustained action.”

He said the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) remained the country’s most effective public-private funding model for security, equipping agencies with patrol vehicles, gadgets and surveillance resources.

“Through LSSTF, we have built a structure unmatched by any other state,” he added.

Oladejo said the Sanwo-Olu administration had deepened the model through technology-driven policing, including surveillance cameras, crime-mapping tools and smart-city monitoring systems.

He noted that grassroots intelligence had improved due to the integration of traditional rulers, community groups and civil society in the state’s security network.

“The community has become a full partner in maintaining vigilance,” he said.

The spokesman added that Lagos had achieved strong inter-agency coordination involving the Police, the armed forces and intelligence units, ensuring faster response and reduced operational overlap.

He said this cooperation also involved state -owed agencies like the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Agency(LNSA), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority(LASTMA),  Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC)

On emergency management, Oladejo said LASEMA had shown how a sub-national could build a world-class rapid-response structure capable of handling fires, disasters and large-scale emergencies.

He said continuity of governance had allowed Lagos to strengthen policies over time without politicising security.

He said: “This is why Lagos is fully ready for state police whenever the constitution permits it

“While some states are still debating structures, Lagos already operates an intelligence-driven framework that can be scaled seamlessly.”

Oladejo credited the achievements to long-term planning by Tinubu and continuous modernisation by Sanwo-Olu.

He accused some opposition figures of attempting to politicise national insecurity, saying Lagos had instead chosen responsibility and sustained investment.

“As President and Commander-in-Chief, Tinubu is implementing major reforms. Lagos remains the reference point for how federal and sub-national synergy can work,” he said.

He urged other states to study and adapt the Lagos model, saying Nigeria’s security challenges required coordinated national and local efforts beyond election cycles.

  • Supreme Court upholds installation of Ekiti monarch after 16yrs of legal tussle

Supreme Court upholds installation of Ekiti monarch after 16yrs of legal tussle

The Supreme Court has finally resolved the 16-year legal battle over the Alara stool of Aramoko-Ekiti, dismissing the appeal filed by Prince Segun Aderemi and upholding the enthronement of the late Oba Adegoke Olu-Adeyemi.

The Apex Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Idris Mohammed on behalf of four other justices, ruled that the appeal lacked merit and failed to establish any exceptional circumstances that would justify overturning the concurrent decisions of the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

According to the court, Prince Aderemi did not present a compelling argument capable of dislodging the well-reasoned judgments of the lower courts, which it described as “sound, firm in law, and unimpeachable”.

The late monarch and Prince Aderemi are both from the same Arakale Ruling House.

Reacting to the judgment, human rights lawyer Barrister Kabir Akingbolu said the Supreme Court’s decision reaffirms that traditional leadership is ultimately determined by divine will and the collective choice of the people.

Akingbolu criticized the prolonged legal challenge, noting that the deceased monarch was not only Prince Aderemi’s relative but also his mentor.

Akingbolu added that the Supreme Court ruling reinforces the principle that no one can impose themselves on a community, stressing that peace has finally returned to Aramoko-Ekiti after many years of tension.

  • Explainer: Nigeria’s FIRS France tax partnership

Explainer: Nigeria’s FIRS France tax partnership

    • By Arabinrin Aderonke

We are in the 21st century, and the way technology, commerce, and governance are evolving demands institutions that are agile, ambitious, and globally aware. Nigeria, our beloved country, is beginning to show that it can meet these demands. Among its institutions, the Federal Inland Revenue Service has taken many steps to reach global standards.

The initiatives over the past two years reflect an intentional march toward a modern, efficient, and connected revenue administration.

The latest development in this ongoing transformation came this week, when FIRS and France’s Direction Générale des Finances Publiques signed a memorandum of understanding at the French Embassy in Abuja.

The agreement was formalized by Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of FIRS, and French Ambassador Marc Fonbaustier. It establishes a framework for collaboration between the two agencies, focusing on strengthening tax administration, advancing digital processes, and building institutional capacity. For Nigeria, this partnership shows a commitment to learning from international experience while tailoring solutions to our context.

What does it mean when a Nigerian agency sits across the table from a French institution to discuss taxes, digital systems, and public administration? Nigeria is demonstrating that it wants a system that does more than collect.

It wants one that works, earns trust, and makes citizens feel their contributions matter. France brings decades of experience from a different context. Together, they are exploring what is possible when ideas meet practice and local realities meet global experience.

As we have seen, the Tax Boss is committed to purposeful transformation of the agency. Dr. Zacch believes it is about how work is done, not just what is done. This MoU is a conscious effort to see what works elsewhere and ask how it can fit Nigeria.

It is a tool, a conversation starter, a way to test ideas while keeping Nigeria’s realities in view. There is no fixed blueprint, only the work of learning, adapting, and shaping systems that can genuinely serve the people.

Dr. Zacch has been leveraging technology in practical ways. For him, it is not just about having digital tools, but about how they are applied, how staff are trained, and how citizens experience the system.

FIRS is exploring ways to make digital tools functional rather than ornamental. Faster processing, clearer communication, and better compliance are steps that can change the way the country approaches revenue, accountability, and governance.

People are just as important as technology.

The MoU provides an opportunity for FIRS staff to see how a mature agency like France’s DGFiP develops professional standards, trains its employees, and manages a disciplined workforce.

At the same time, Nigeria offers lessons of its own: how to run a young, energetic workforce that adapts quickly and finds solutions even when resources are limited. Both agencies stand to learn from each other, strengthening the culture and capability of the workforce while preparing for the future of public finance administration.

Cross-border taxation, transfer pricing, and exchange of information are no longer optional. Economic activity moves fast and across borders, and Nigeria cannot operate in isolation.

The MoU provides a framework to coordinate approaches, share information, and adopt international best practices where they make sense for Nigeria. It is a way to protect national interests while participating confidently in global discussions.

This partnership is not about Nigeria being “behind” or France being “ahead.” It is about conversation, experimentation, and shared curiosity. It is about asking hard questions: Can we make tax systems simple enough that people trust them? Can technology and human skill work together so that paying taxes feels like a shared responsibility, not a punishment? Can an agency learn from another without losing its own identity?

One thing we cannot take away from Dr. Zacch is that he has not waited for systems to be perfect before acting.

He meets with global partners, yes, but he also walks the halls of FIRS, watches how processes unfold, and asks the questions most government officials overlook: Is this working? Is it fair? That attention to detail, that insistence on practical results, is what makes his leadership different from others.

His work leaves a good mark, and Nigerians feel the system is working for them. This is another move towards something good, we can’t help but acknowledge that.

  • NIPR urges Aiyedatiwa to back infrastructure upgrade with massive public sensitisation

NIPR urges Aiyedatiwa to back infrastructure upgrade with massive public sensitisation

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ondo State Chapter, has called on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to complement the ongoing infrastructural upgrade in the state with an aggressive public education and sensitisation campaign.

The call was contained in a statement issued on Friday after the institute’s monthly meeting in Akure.

The statement was jointly signed by the state chairman, Funmilayo Ikueduranni, and secretary, Sunday Omosule, and released to journalists in Akure, the state capital.

The NIPR commended the governor for the rejuvenation of road signs and installation of new traffic lights across Akure, describing the developments as reflective of global standards for modern and well-planned cities.

According to the institute, the deployment of functional traffic control systems is a hallmark of urban development, orderliness, and effective road management.

“However, the chapter strongly advises the state government to complement this notable infrastructural upgrade with aggressive educational and sensitisation campaigns,” the statement said.

It recommended that the campaigns should be coordinated through relevant government agencies, including the Ministries of Transportation, Information, and Works, as well as the Ondo State Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to enlighten residents on the proper use of traffic lights and road regulations.

The body also warned that without adequate sensitisation, the initiative could become counterproductive due to ignorance, misuse, or disregard for traffic rules.

The institute further reaffirmed its readiness to partner with the Aiyedatiwa administration to drive awareness programmes that will improve public compliance and ensure the sustainability of the road management projects.

On the social importance of the upgrade, the NIPR noted that functional traffic systems enhance the safety of motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users, while reducing accidents and promoting a disciplined driving culture.

The group said economically, the traffic projects represent a strategic investment in improved mobility and productivity, with benefits including reduced travel time, enhanced commercial activities, lower fuel consumption, and a more conducive environment for business and security operations.

“By easing movement within the metropolis, this notable initiative of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa perfectly aligns with the broader global agenda of infrastructural development and economic sustainability as enshrined in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 and 9,” it added.
