Prioritise AI funding for healthcare innovation, Pantami tells FG

Former Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, has urged the Federal Government to prioritise funding for artificial intelligence (AI) to strengthen innovation in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

Pantami made the call on Thursday while delivering a guest lecture at the 26th National Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Islamic Medical Association of Nigeria (IMAN) held in Kaduna.

This year’s conference focused on the theme, “Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Benefits, Ethical Boundaries and Islamic Perspective.”

Pantami said that AI has become indispensable in modern healthcare systems across the world, advising Nigeria not to lag at a time when countries are investing heavily in emerging technologies.

“Artificial intelligence is unavoidable, unstoppable, and inevitable,” he said. “It becomes necessary for us as Muslims to look into technology critically and see how it will help our profession.”

Pantami explained that artificial intelligence offers enormous benefits in disease detection, personalised treatment, accuracy in diagnosis, and surgical precision.

He cited examples of virtual surgeries conducted between Rome and Beijing, and between America and Asia, which he described as evidence of the transformative power of AI in saving lives.

“AI will support our medical practitioners in saving lives, increasing high levels of precision and accuracy in determining and diagnosing diseases,” he noted. “But, despite its numerous benefits, its adoption has to be ethical and responsible.”

The ex-Minister highlighted the need to invest in modern infrastructure, training, and retraining of medical personnel, as well as developing AI-powered tools that can improve healthcare delivery nationwide.

Stressing that failing to invest in AI would leave Nigeria far behind global trends, he referenced Saudi Arabia’s recent announcement of a $40 billion AI fund—more than Nigeria’s national budget—to illustrate the scale of global commitment to technological advancement.

“We need to prioritise investment in AI infrastructure to support our healthcare system,” Pantami added, emphasising that meaningful funding is the foundation for any long–term technological transformation in the sector.

Fabian Lojede: Parenthood opened my eyes to a gap in children’s entertainment

Accomplished actor, writer and filmmaker, Fabia Adeoye Lojede has opened up on his new project, Afrotods, saying the need to talk to children in the way and manner they are used to without preaching necessitated the decision to create Afrotods.

In a recent chat, Lojede expressed that it took a while observing his kids and their friends to develop and come up with Afrotods.

He also expressed the need to teach Africans in diaspora the values and culture of the African people.

“The minute I had kids, I realised that I don’t have anything online or any of my works that my children can watch. I’m either playing a killer. They were not obliged to watch anything I had created. One of the key things that I see is that our children, black kids generally, there’s no content out there for them that talks to them, there’s almost a caricature-ness in some of the content targeting black kids,” he began.

Speaking elaborately, he said, “We never had to learn our culture, we imbibed it but now we have to teach our children our culture. With Afrotods, we aren’t forcing the culture but we are reaching the kids in a very subtle way and making them imbibe some of the values in us, which include respect everyone, respect yourself, respect the elders. In Afrotods, we have created Afrohood, which is fictional. Afrotods is about everyone with African origin, so whether you are Jamaica, African America, as far as your descent can be traced to Africa, in the sense of value and culture. We have it as animation, we have it on YouTube channel, we have been able to get it across to more people and will be available for people to download. We have done the English, we would be doing the French and later the indigenous languages. I wish more people spoke in their mother tongues,” Lojede said.

Lojede further explained that he hopes to fill a long-standing gap in children’s entertainment by creating Afro-modern stories kids can see themselves in using books, animation, and future digital platforms.

‘The Afrotods,’ Olojede’s recent project is a new children’s book and multimedia project designed to give African and diaspora kids fresh, modern content rooted in identity, values, and culture.

He went further to explain the creative challenges, the audience he intends to reach, and why ‘The Afrotods’ will eventually expand into animation, apps, and other digital platforms.

Diving into the project, he explained that the Afrotods explores the lifestyle of inhabitants of Afroville, a beautiful world filled with Afro-modern motifs, history, culture, music, and fun, and it’s sold for 10 pounds per unit.

Ruben Amorim: Portuguese league record holder

There are always many great teams competing in the Portuguese league. The battle for the title is particularly interesting. Fans from all over the world follow it closely. If you are interested in the games of this league, then 1xBet Nigeria registration is what you need. It is quick to complete, after which all you need to do is top up your balance to start playing big.

In the 2023/2024 season, Sporting triumphed in the championship. In that campaign, the team literally left their competitors no chance. One of the main reasons for the team’s success is considered to be the excellent coaching work of Ruben Amorim. This is the second time he has led Sporting to victory in the Primeira Liga.

Amorim managed to take Sporting to a whole new level. He took charge of the team in March 2020. Before his arrival, the Lisbon club had not won the Primeira Liga since the 2001/2002 season. Many fans had lost faith in the possibility of success after such a long hiatus, but the coach restored their faith in the club.

As for Amorim, in his first full season, he ended the club’s 19-year wait for the championship title, losing only one game, and also won the Portuguese League Cup. Then, in the 2023/2024 season, at the age of 39, he became the youngest coach to win the Portuguese championship twice.

Thanks to this, the coach has already made history in the Primeira Liga. However, this marked the end of his career at Sporting. In the fall of 2024, the coach accepted an offer from Manchester United and took charge of the team, although he was unable to achieve the same impressive results in England.

What helped the coach achieve this?

Amorim demonstrated his coaching talent early on. And he didn’t just achieve one-off success. It’s easy to follow his team today at the reliable 1xBet Nigeria bookmaker, where registration is quick and available to all adult users.

Returning to Amorim and his achievements, it is worth noting that the coach made history in the Portuguese championship thanks to:

    1. Ability to build team play. Under his leadership, Sporting played exciting football.
    2. Ability to find weaknesses in opponents. Sporting often exploited these weaknesses, putting pressure on their opponents and achieving results.
    3. Focus on work. The coach was immersed in the team’s affairs and managed to take the club to a new level.

Thus, Amorim has already made history at Sporting and in the Portuguese league. He has already become a legend among local fans. It is only regrettable that Amorim was unable to achieve success with his ideas at a higher level.

Eradiri hails Tinubu’s actions to end insecurity

    • …urges president to name, shame sponsors

A former Bayelsa state gubernatorial candidate, Udengs Eradiri, has applauded steps taken so far by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to tackle insecurity in the country.

Eradiri particularly hailed the President for appointing the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), as the Minister of Defence.

He applauded the National Assembly for swiftly screening and confirming Musa, saying it signalled a new, determined era to confront banditry and terrorism.

Eradiri, a former Commissioner for Youths and later Environment in Bayelsa State, further commended the way and manner President Tinubu turned emerging aggression from the USA into collaborative diplomacy.

The Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) said President Tinubu intelligently converted the American aggression into a collaborative effort to find a permanent solution to insecurity in the country

He said, “I want to commend Mr President for some of the actions he has taken in recent times to address the security situation in the country.

“One of them is that he turned the aggression that was coming from America into diplomacy. Instead of guns blazing, it is now a collaborative effort to rid Nigeria of this cancer that is affecting us.

“I commend Mr President that despite the deteriorating level we got to, he was able to make certain vital decisions. One of them is the appointment of the recently retired Defence Chief as the Minister for Defence. The defence ministry cannot be run by people who have no business in security.

“The Nigerian system must be purged of moles. Nigerians are happy with the appointment of Gen Musa. You can feel the pulse because you know that the man is a round peg in a round hole.

Eradiri appealed to the President to evolve a system that would purge all the moles and saboteurs out of all public institutions, especially the security architecture.

Eradiri said, “The problem is actually the moles in government, the APC, the National Assembly, civil service, the army, and the national security architecture. That is where the fight must start.

“The President must begin to look inward to identify, name, and shame all the moles. The DSS recently purged itself of some persons. The President must look into the Ministry of Communication to stop the compromise of military signals.

“Some people are passing vital information to terrorists. The battle is about purging all the internal worms in the system. We must cleanse our system. Let us name and shame all the people on the wanted list”.

Eradiri observed that most of the governors for the first time in the country were presenting trillions as their budgets for the 2026 fiscal year, saying such liquidity in states was made possible by the economic reforms of President Tinubu.

He said, “We are only appealing to these governors to judiciously utilize these humongous resources and revenue accruing to them because of the economic intelligence displayed by the President Tinubu’s administration.

“This revenue must reflect in the standard of living of citizens in the various states. It is obvious that President Tinubu has been generating a lot of money for the governors. The governors must reciprocate by evolving people-oriented programmes and projects that will reduce the cost of living and increase the standard of living in their various states.”

Expert urges engineers to prioritise safety, adhere to building codes

The Chief Executive Officer of Fendini Group, Prince Adelaja Adeoye, has called on building professionals to prioritise safety and strictly comply with planning regulations to curb disasters in Nigeria’s built environment.

Adeoye made the appeal in a telephone interview with newsmen on Wednesday shortly after the Convocation Ceremony at Lead City University, Ibadan, where he received his Master’s Degree in Property Development and Management.

The real estate expert warned that rising cases of building collapse and structural failure across the country were clear reminders of the need for engineers, architects, developers, and other stakeholders to adhere to zoning laws, building codes, and physical planning requirements.

“Prioritising safety from the project planning stage is key. Once professionals follow zoning regulations and obtain the required physical planning permits, many disasters can be prevented,” he said.

Adeoye stressed that industry players must equip themselves with the right knowledge to collaborate effectively with regulators, government agencies, and investors.

Speaking about his academic achievement, the real estate expert described it as the result of years of rigorous study and commitment.

“I am proud to have earned a Master’s Degree in Property Development and Management from the prestigious Lead City University, Ibadan. This achievement has sharpened my expertise and strengthened my career as a property developer specialising in upscale residential, commercial, industrial, and hospitality developments,” he said.

He added that the qualification would further enhance his capacity to drive compliance and excellence within Fendini Homes, the real estate subsidiary of Fendini Group.

Adeoye expressed gratitude to God, his family, mentors, lecturers, and the Lead City University community for their support throughout his academic journey.

  • Groups reject senator’s call for sack of Ribadu

Groups reject senator’s call for sack of Ribadu

Two groups, Oodua Peoples Network (OPN) and Niger Delta Stakeholders’ Forum (NDSF), have rejected the call for the removal of National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu by Senator Francis Fadahunsi because he is not a soldier.

The senator, who represents Osun East in the Senate, said in a statement by his media aide, Sam Segun, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should “reorganise the nation’s security management team by appointing a retired military officer as the National Security Adviser (NSA).”

Fadahunsi urged the President to redeploy the NSA to another area of national service where his competence would be better utilised.”

But objecting to the suggestion, OPN said in a statement by its president, Chief Olasupo Bamidele, Secretary, Chief Emmanuel Adesokan, and Director of Organization, Kehinde Olasope, that the respected lawmaker ignored an appropriate channel for communication with the president.

The group lamented that Fadahunsi threw up “our collective national security to the court of public opinion as against using his privileged position to communicate to the President where his position would have been given the desired attention.”

OPN pointed out that “the position of the NSA is not the exclusive reserve of serving or retired military officers,” adding that “It is open to all competent Nigerians whom the president has confidence in.”

The group added, “It’s on record that from its establishment in 1990, the Office of the National Security Adviser was piloted by Late Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta (a retired IGP) as the pioneer Coordinator, National Security (1990-1993) and Alh. Ismaila Gwarzo Nigerian high-ranking security and intelligence official (1993-1998), both performed creditably well and were adjudged the best. And yet, they were not military officers.

“Without prejudice, between 1999 to 2023, the office was occupied by 6 different military officers at various times, and yet our national security situation deserves a lot.

“Therefore, to restrict the Office of the National Security Adviser to a retired military officer, portends a total lack of understanding of the national security concept by the Distinguished Senator.

“If the Distinguished Senator had done a little diligence, he could have found that the most successful National Security Advisers in the USA, UK, and other advanced democracies were civilian citizens, while ironically, their military counterparts had the worst administration.

“Looking at the events leading up to the unfortunate declaration of Country of Particular Concern by the US administration recently, President Tinubu appointed the NSA Mal Nuhu Ribadu to lead a Nigerian high-powered delegation to engage with the US team for peaceful resolution of the seeming impasse.

“His appointment was due to his pedigree and global network outreach, as he commands respect within and outside the international intelligence family.

“It’s on record that due to his acumen and diplomatic disposition, he has succeeded in attaining a mutually supportive position with the US administration to the relief of our country.”

Also rejecting the senator’s suggestion, NDSF, in a statement by its President, Andrew Mene, Secretary, Chief Rowland Tamunopiri, and Publicity Secretary, Umukoro Erhimeyoma, said the call reflected a narrow view of national security leadership.

According to the group, “modern security challenges-ranging from terrorism and cyber-threats to intelligence coordination-require not just military experience but strategic intelligence, inter-agency coordination, and policy depth, all of which Ribadu has demonstrated throughout his career.”

NDSF said Ribadu’s track record as a former Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman and his longstanding involvement in security and governance reforms showed that effective security leadership is not defined solely by military background, but by competence, integrity, and the ability to integrate intelligence with security operations.

The group said, “Rather than distracting the nation with unnecessary politicisation of security appointments, leaders should support efforts already underway to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve operational synergy, and pursue lasting peace across the country.”

It added, “What Nigeria needs is results, not recycled arguments rooted in outdated assumptions. Senator Fadunsi’s suggestion that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should replace Mallam Nuhu Ribadu with a retired military officer as NSA exposes a shallow and outdated understanding of modern national security leadership. The idea that only a soldier can manage national security belongs to the past.

“Today’s security environment demands intellect, intelligence capability, strategic coordination, and integrity – qualities Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has demonstrated for decades.

“Ribadu’s leadership is anchored in deep experience in intelligence, anti-corruption enforcement, inter-agency collaboration, and counter-terrorism and policy competencies that many retired officers do not possess.

“Security is no longer about who can wear a uniform; it’s about who can analyse threats, dismantle complex criminal networks, and coordinate civilian and military structures effectively.

“Senator Fadunsi should also be reminded that the world’s most successful democracies do not restrict the role of National Security Adviser to military officers.

“In fact, they deliberately appoint seasoned civilians, technocrats, or intelligence professionals: These nations understand that modern security strategy is intelligence-driven, analysis-driven, and coordination-driven, not rank-driven.

“President Tinubu’s appointment of Ribadu aligns with global best practice.  Leaders like Senator Fadunsi should focus on supporting the reforms already strengthening Nigeria’s intelligence architecture.

Nigeria needs competence, strategy, and results, not old stereotypes disguised as advice. National modern security is driven by intelligence, strategy, and coordination, not by military rank.

“Malam Nuhu Ribadu’s appointment as NSA is not a sentimental or political choice – it is a strategic, calculated decision grounded in the realities of modern security threats and what Nigeria urgently needs: integrity, intelligence, and actionable strategy.”

I have helped more in the industry than Olamide, Don Jazzy, others – Portable claims

Controversial singer Portable has claimed to have provided more assistance to individuals in the music industry than prominent artists Olamide, Don Jazzy, Wizkid, and Davido.

The Zazu crooner emphasised that his philanthropic efforts extend beyond the music sector, targeting the less privileged and ordinary people.

According to Portable, many Nigerian celebrities are egoistic and fail to acknowledge their fans, whereas he freely associates with people and promotes them on social media.

He said, “Many Nigerian celebrities don’t post their fans even if they dance to their songs or promote them. But I repost every positive video about me.

“Even with your money, many celebrities won’t let you feature them as an upcoming artist. But I help people freely. I have helped more people in the music industry than Don Jazzy, Olamide, Wizkid, and Davido.”

Portable defined “help” as providing comprehensive support, including shelter, clothing, food, and studio sessions, distinguishing this from mere business transactions.

“Help is when you see a homeless person and take them home, shelter them, clothe and feed them. You also take them to their first studio session and pay for it. Anything other than that, you are just doing business. A lot of the people claiming that they are helping others in the music industry are just doing business,” he added.

He criticised celebrities who exploit others for personal gain and label them “ungrateful” when they seek independence.

“Most of the time, when the artists they are using for business decide to be independent or move forward, they label them ungrateful. How are they ungrateful? You only used them for business”, he concluded.

PDP’s late expulsions deepen crisis, jeopardise electoral future — Aborisade

A United Kingdom-based human rights lawyer and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Niyi Aborisade, has warned that the party’s delayed expulsion of key members has intensified its internal crisis and endangered its prospects in upcoming elections.

Aborisade said the PDP should have taken decisive action long before now, rather than waiting until the eve of an election.

In a statement, he noted that the delay has pushed the party into an avoidable state of uncertainty.

“PDP acted late to expel those who should have been expelled long ago. This should have been settled a long time ago and not on the eve of the election,” he said.

According to him, unresolved court cases continue to cast doubt on the party’s stability and cohesion ahead of the next polls.

“There are still court cases to which no one can predict the outcome. The party will definitely rise again after this shadow, but our fate is now uncertain in the next election unless we can resolve the matter amicably,” he added.

Aborisade also described the defection of Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, as a troubling sign of the dangers confronting the party.

“A sitting governor has left us. He sees the danger ahead and does the wise thing. How many are yet to leave? Some are just barely clinging to the fabric that holds the party together,” he said.

He noted that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, now carries the responsibility of leading a swift healing process within the PDP, describing the task as “herculean.”

Aborisade urged Makinde to seize the moment by leveraging what he called the looming challenges within the All Progressives Congress (APC) to rebuild and strengthen the party.

“There is little time to rectify the situation, and we must act fast. Hope is fast fading, and act fast we must,” he warned.

He stressed that urgent reconciliation remains the only way to prevent further haemorrhage within the party.

JUST IN: Cross River APC chairman Alphonsus Eba impeached

The Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday removed its chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, after members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) passed an overwhelming vote of no confidence on him amid prolonged internal disputes.

Eba’s impeachment, endorsed by 30 out of 32 SEC members, followed months of complaints alleging financial mismanagement, high-handed leadership, and the shutdown of the party secretariat for an extended period.

With the chairman’s removal, the SEC immediately mandated the Deputy Chairman, Ntufam Ekum Ekok Ojogu, to assume office as Acting Chairman pending ratification by the APC National Secretariat.

Party leaders said the decision was necessary to halt what they described as a deepening crisis within the state chapter.

Chief Kelvin Njong, Chairman of the APC in Boki and spokesperson for the 18 chapter chairmen, said the impeachment followed extensive consultations and formal petitions sent to the party’s national leadership.

After taking his oath of office, Ojogu pledged to reopen the party structure, reconcile aggrieved members, and restore transparency in administration. He thanked stakeholders for upholding due process and reaffirmed the chapter’s loyalty to Governor Bassey Edet Otu.

“All grievances must be set aside so we can rebuild. All entitlements owed will be addressed. My doors and phone lines are open 24/7. It is time to sheath our swords,” he said.

Ojogu commended ward leaders, polling unit coordinators, and volunteers for sustaining party activities at the grassroots throughout the crisis, promising to work closely with Governor Otu to strengthen the “People First” agenda.

Following the inauguration, SEC members and chapter chairmen proceeded into a closed-door meeting to outline restructuring plans and prepare a formal report to the APC National Secretariat.

The development marks one of the most significant leadership shake-ups in the Cross River APC in recent years, signaling a renewed effort by stakeholders to restore discipline and reposition the party ahead of forthcoming political contests.
