Delta Assembly demands clearer roadmap for 2026 more agenda

The Delta House of Assembly has demanded for results- oriented strategies ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.

The Assembly insisted that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) must present clearer, measurable and result-driven strategies for advancing Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori’s ‘MORE Agenda’.

The call was made during the 2026  budget defence session of the House Committee on Housing, Women Affairs, Girl Child Development and Humanitarian Support Services, chaired by Mrs. Bridget Anyafulu on Thursday in Asaba.

She made it clear that the era of routine presentations without actionable frameworks was over.

Anyafulu said that while the administration’s focus on housing expansion, social protection and humanitarian support aligned with the needs of the state, “good intentions are no longer enough.”

She said the 2026 plans must show unambiguous linkages between public spending and improved living conditions for ordinary people of Delta.

“We want to see how each proposal translates into real outcomes.

“Our people must feel the impact of every naira allocated. That is the essence of the MORE Agenda,” she said.

Other committee members reinforced her position.

They urged MDAs to adopt innovative, data-driven approaches capable of tackling urgent challenges ranging from affordable housing deficits to the escalating humanitarian needs of vulnerable households across rural and urban communities.

Earlier, the Commissioners, Mrs Pat Ajudua (Women Affairs), Ms Orode Uduaghan (Humanitarian Support Services), and Mr Godknows Angele (Housing)—unveiled a raft of initiatives contained in their 2026 budget proposals.

These included expanded social welfare interventions for women and vulnerable groups, strengthened emergency-response systems, and renewed investments in affordable housing schemes across the three senatorial districts.

The commissioners argued that progress recorded in 2025 could be sustained and accelerated only if funding stability and legislative support were maintained.

They also called for closer executive–legislative collaboration to eliminate bureaucratic choke points that often slowed down project execution.

They provided detailed accounts of the ministries’ achievements in the outgoing year, such as improved community-based support systems and ongoing housing-project upgrades, in spite of financial and logistical challenges.

However, the lawmakers pointed out that significant gaps still existed between projected outcomes and their actual impact on communities.

They cited rural localities where essential services remained insufficient, and where beneficiaries of social welfare programmes were yet to feel meaningful relief.

For the Assembly, the broader concern is ensuring that 2026 does not merely continue existing programmes but transforms them into high-impact interventions with measurable results.(NAN)

Rivers APC lauds Tunji-Ojo for promoting 75,202 paramilitary officers

Spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Darlington Nwauju, has commended the Interior Minister, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for facilitating the promotion of 75,202 various categories of officers of the four paramilitary agencies under the Interior Ministry.

Nwauju said the Interior Ministry under Dr Tunji-Ojo’s leadership activated all the critical factors stimulating motivation in work environment including recognition and rewards, providing opportunities for professional growth, learning, advancement and a sense of fairness.

He said, “Nigerians should be concerned with identifying square pegs in square holes who have capacity to deliver tangible dividends from taxpayer’s money. Public service should and must remain performance driven with measurable indices and not haphazard or an all comers affair.

“Judging from the past history of the Ministry of Interior, this was a Ministry whose voice was only heard announcing national holidays, what we now witness as Nigerians is like the opposite of that inglorious past.

“Part of the ugly narratives past handlers of the Interior Ministry bequeathed this nation was its total lack of planning and organisational abilities evidenced in a shambolic recruitment process which never saw light of day”

Nwauju recalled that under the PDP administration in 2014, thousands of job seekers were warehoused like disposable articles at different stadia and centres in Abuja, Benin, Minna, Port Harcourt, Kano and Lagos.

“Nigerians were packed like sardine in a most catastrophic recruitment exercise and innocent lives were lost with hundreds getting injured. That incident occurred as a result of an attempted recruitment into the Immigration Service alone, this contrasts the recent seamless recruitment exercise conducted for all four of the agencies under the Interior Ministry, where technology was simply deployed leading to a hassle free exercise”, he said.

Nwauju called on paramilitary officers under the Interior Ministry to reciprocate the gesture by redoubling efforts to strengthen the nation’s internal security.

Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report, offering a detailed look at the events, personalities, entertainment, and cultural moments that shaped the curiosity of Nigerians throughout the year.

The data, published on Thursday, reflects how Nigerians turned to Google to track major political developments, pay tribute to national icons, decode viral slang, and explore emerging food and lifestyle trends.

Political conversation featured prominently on Search in 2025. Senator Natasha Akpoti was the most searched Nigerian personality, underscoring heightened political engagement during the year.

Global news events also sparked significant interest, with the Israel–Iran conflict and the U.S. elections ranking among the top trending topics.

Nigerians also searched widely following the deaths of prominent figures including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai, and Pope Francis.

Entertainment searches were driven largely by Nigerian music and cinema. ‘Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)’ by Tkeyz featuring Steve Hills was the most searched song of the year, followed by Fido’s ‘Joy Is Coming’ and Davido and Omah Lay’s collaboration ‘With You’.

In film and series, local productions led the trends. Kemi Adetiba appeared among the most searched personalities, boosted by the success of To Kill a Monkey, which ranked as Nigeria’s top trending local series in 2025.

The cultural impact of online trends was evident in the year’s top questions. The query “What is Labubu?” topped the list as Nigerians sought to understand the viral character that swept social media. Searches for the meaning of “Achalugo,” popularised by the YouTube film Love in Every Word, also surged.

Food-related searches blended tradition with experimentation. Nigerians looked up recipes ranging from chinchin and sausage rolls to Ginger Shots, Pornstar Martini, and global favourites such as hummus and lasagna.

“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa. “These lists show how Nigerians are using Search to actively engage with the world around them.”

Tinubu hails Senate for swift confirmation of Ex-CDS Musa as Defence Minister

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Senate for its prompt confirmation of former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence, describing the appointment as timely and crucial to the nation’s security needs.

In a message posted Wednesday on his verified X handle, @officialABAT, the President expressed appreciation to the Upper Chamber for what he called its “expedited confirmation” of the retired military chief, barely 24 hours after he forwarded Musa’s name for screening.

“Two days ago, I transmitted the name of General Christopher G. Musa, our immediate past Chief of Defence Staff and a fine gentleman, to the Nigerian Senate for confirmation as the Federal Minister of Defence.

“I want to commend the Nigerian Senate for its expedited confirmation of General Musa yesterday. His appointment comes at a critical juncture in our lives as a Nation”, President Tinubu wrote.

The President, who has repeatedly prioritised the strengthening of Nigeria’s security architecture, noted that General Musa’s entry into the Federal Executive Council comes at a time the country is confronting heightened threats from terrorists and other violent criminal groups across multiple fronts.

General Musa, who served as CDS until his recent retirement, is expected to bring extensive operational experience and a deep understanding of the nation’s security challenges to his new role.

The President ended his post with a brief prayerful note: “God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

RNI empowerment: First Lady lifts 250 PWDs with N50m in Delta

Two hundred and fifty (250) Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs) in Delta State have benefitted from Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

The RHI programme was launched simultaneously across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), marking a major national commitment to empower persons with disabilities.

The initiative was unveiled in line with the celebration of the 2025 International Day of Persons With Disabilities, emphasising the importance of inclusivity and support for individuals facing disabilities.

Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori, the wife of the Delta State Governor and Founder of the You Matter Charity Foundation (YMCF), represented Senator Tinubu during the event in the state, overseeing the distribution of grants to beneficiaries.

A total of 250 individuals with various forms of disabilities in Delta State received grants of N200,000 each, aimed at strengthening their small businesses and promoting financial independence.

Each participating state, along with the FCT and DEPOWA, received N50 million for further distribution to beneficiaries, ensuring that the initiative reaches many individuals in need.

This programme represents a crucial effort to empower people with disabilities, enhance their economic standing, and promote their integration into society.

In her national address, Senator Oluremi Tinubu emphasised that Nigeria becomes stronger when every citizen is empowered to contribute meaningfully to national development.

She noted that the empowerment scheme aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes inclusive growth and social investment.

She stated that a total of 9,500 persons with disabilities across Nigeria will benefit from N1.9 billion in grants, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

Delivering Senator Tinubu’s address in Asaba, Deaconess Oborevwori commended the First Lady’s compassion and dedication to uplifting vulnerable groups.

She described persons with disabilities as individuals “full of gifts and potential,” urging society to show greater love, understanding, and inclusiveness.

She encouraged beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity, noting that the support is intended to bring relief and enhance their livelihoods.

The RHI Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons With Disabilities has also been institutionalized as an annual initiative, to be celebrated every December 3 in line with the United Nations’ International Day of Persons With Disabilities.

As part of the Delta State rollout, Deaconess Oborevwori presented a wheelchair to one of the beneficiaries, a gesture warmly received by attendees.

An excited beneficiary, Mr Daniel Nwutu, expressed gratitude to Nigeria’s First Lady for launching this programme for persons in his category.

Mr Nwutu who is the recipient of the wheelchair, said that the grant and mobility aid would significantly improve his business, independence, and quality of life.

Others described the initiative as a transformative opportunity that brings hope, dignity, and encouragement to persons with disabilities across the state and Nigeria.

Omojuwa sparks debate on billionaires’ influence after touring ATCO’s modular housing plant

Board member of the Halifax International Security Forum and Founder of Alpha Reach, JJ Omojuwa  has ignited widespread conversation after his recent meeting with the billionaire Chair and CEO of ATCO, Nancy Southern, at the tour of ATCO Structures and one of its Attainable Home modular housing projects in downtown Calgary, Alberta.

In different posts, with even just one of those already seen by over half a million X users, Omojuwa noted his fascination with some cultural nuances.

He explained that Southern drove by herself, during the visit to one of her companies sites and despite her role, he noted, “she never acted like she was in charge”. This sparked debates on billionaires’ humility and influence.

Speaking about his visit to ATCO Structures plant on the invitation of Nancy Southern after a chat in Halifax. Omojuwa stated that he had a different expectations of what modular homes and seeing them changed his thoughts.

He noted, “I had a different expectation of what the ATCO Modular Homes would look like, but seeing them made me realise that we are very much in the future of housing for the vast majority of people in need of access to their own homes.”

He toured a six-storey, 84-unit affordable housing building using permanent modular construction which is projected to go for about 950 CAD/month (all inclusive) located at the core of downtown Calgary.

He further stated, “Adam Beattie, the President of ATCO Structures took me through the elements of the project; the efficiency of the building approach, AI helping to debug the process, minimal site disruption, cost, savings on time etc.”

ATCO Structures is a global leader in modular construction, operating in Canada, the U.S., Australia, Mexico, and Chile. Founded in Canada, ATCO has steadily expanded its modular housing footprint. In 2023, its Structures division acquired Triple M Housing, a major modular-home manufacturer, reinforcing ATCO’s capacity to deliver factory-built homes.

  • Ex-LG chairmen adopt Barau as APC’s sole gov candidate for 2027

Ex-LG chairmen adopt Barau as APC’s sole gov candidate for 2027

Former local government chairmen in Kano state have adopted the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, as the sole candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 governorship race in the state.

The former LG chairmen who served between 2019 and 2022, during the era of Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as Governor of the state, adopted Senator Barau during a courtesy call to the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday.

A motion for the adoption of Senator Barau was moved by the former chairman of Rimin Gado Local Government Area, Barrister Dahiru Mannir Maigari, and seconded by the former chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Hon. Baffa Mohammed Takai.

When the former chairman of Madobi LGA, Alhaji Mohammed Yahaya, put the vote, all the former chairmen unanimously approved it through a voice vote.

Two members of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon Zubairu Hamza Masu (Sumaila) and Hon Garba Yau Gwarmai (Tsanyawa/Ghari), witnessed the event.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the Deputy President of the Senate on media and publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, said that after the voice vote, the local government chairmen appealed to Senator Barau to declare for the governorship race as soon as possible.

Former chairman of Gwale LGA, Alhaji Khalid Ishak Diso informed the Deputy President of the Senate that the people of Kano, especially at the grassroots level, are eagerly awaiting his declaration for the race.

“Kano people are waiting for you to declare for the governorship race. We recently organised an event, where we asked you to declare. You are yet to. The people of Kano are anxiously awaiting your declaration. When are you declaring? Please answer the call to serve our people,” he said.

Also, the former Chairman of ALGON, Baffa Mohammed Takai, who led his colleagues on the courtesy call, said they adopted Senator Barau in view of his outstanding performance in parliament, adding that his contributions to Kano’s development are immense.

“We are here to throw our weight behind you. We are 100 per cent with you. Insha’Allah, you will be the next governor of Kano State, come May 29, 2027. You have the capacity to address the challenges facing our state,” he said.

Responding, the Deputy President of the Senate thanked the former local government chairmen for their support, describing them as grassroots politicians.

“It’s indeed true that Kano was second to Lagos before, in terms of development, in terms of commerce and so on.

“Unfortunately, Kano is now trailing behind due to a lack of good leadership. Let us not live in denial. This is a fact that we must all work together to address in the interest of our people and state.

“I wish to assure you that by the grace of God, we will take bold steps to bring Kano back to its glorious days. We will succeed by the grace of God. We will always stand by the truth and for our people,” he said.

Meanwhile, stakeholders from Tsanyawa and Ghari LGAs of Kano State have also thrown their weight behind Senator Barau’s candidature during their visit to him on Wednesday.

A member of the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Garba Yau Gwarmai, representing Tsanyawa/Ghari, moved the motion, which Hon. Aminu Yakanawa seconded. A thunderous ovation from over 100 stakeholders in attendance followed the announcement of the endorsement.

Yakanawa told the Deputy President of the Senate that the people of the two local government areas are solidly behind him.

“By the grace of Allah SWT, you are the next governor of Kano State. Our people are solidly behind you, and we are committed to supporting you,” he said

Responding, Senator Barau thanked them for the support, saying the massive support from all the people of the state is a signal of what will happen in 2027.

On the security challenges facing some parts of Tsanyawa and Shanono LGAs, he said, “We are not leaving any stone unturned in tackling this challenge. We are working underground to bring an end to it. We have taken all the necessary steps. It is not something that we go to radio stations to announce.”

  • A bold, daring Glasgow in the pages of a book

A bold, daring Glasgow in the pages of a book

    • By Ray Anyasi

From Glasgow Without Love is a powerful, emotionally rich, and thematically daring collection of interconnected stories exploring belonging, displacement, grief, love, and the fragile scaffolding that holds migrant lives together in contemporary Glasgow. With a voice that is both lyrical and unflinching, Albrin Junior merges the hyper-specificity of Nigerian cultural memory with the atmospheric grit and tenderness of Glasgow, crafting narratives that feel universal yet deeply rooted in lived experience. Through its ten stories, the collection captures the emotional topography of those who arrive in new lands carrying histories that refuse to stay behind. Each story stands confidently on its own, but together they form a fuller portrait of a city seen through outsider eyes—its beauty, its quiet violences, and its unexpected offerings of grace.

Albrin does not shy away from taboo subjects: family wounds, mental health, spiritual ambiguity, and the burden of expectations. Across the collection, like the lead story, Diary of a Black Immigrant, Drown, Fake London Girl, characters grapple with the disorientation of arrival and the ghosts that travel with them from Nigeria to Scotland. The manuscript opens with strong cultural grounding, grief rituals, community obligations, and complex family expectations, establishing the emotional luggage the characters bring into Glasgow’s unfamiliar spaces. The contrast between home and host country is one of the collection’s strongest features. Albrin shows how memory becomes both a refuge and a burden, especially in moments of hardship, loneliness, or cultural misinterpretation.

Several stories examine grief not as a single event but as a long, slow-burning process that shapes identity. Characters are often caught between what they’ve lost and what they are struggling to build—relationships strained by distance, emotional expectations inherited from Nigeria, and the pressure to “appear strong” in an unfamiliar society.

Albrin captures with striking accuracy the subtle, everyday cultural collisions faced by migrants, rituals around death, views on masculinity, emotional expression, spiritual beliefs, communal responsibilities, and the interplay between superstition and modern life. These tensions are neither glorified nor condemned; they are presented as lived realities shaping identity. He shows how the characters navigate being “too Nigerian for Scotland, too changed for home,” revealing the emotional cost of migration.

Glasgow is not merely a backdrop; it is a living presence. Cold, grey, bruising, but also full of unexpected warmth and community. The depiction of bus stations, shared flats, school environments, and hospital rooms captures the palpable urban texture of the city. It mirrors the characters’ internal climates, sometimes harsh, sometimes quietly hopeful. Nigeria, by contrast, appears in memory sequences with colour, sound, ritual, and emotional intensity. This creates a dynamic spatial duality running through the entire book.

Albrin’s prose is lyrical without being indulgent. His descriptions are emotive yet controlled, and his dialogue rings true. The writing displays: emotional intelligence, thematic cohesion, cultural fluency, strong narrative pacing, and immersive sensory detail. Many scenes show a playwright’s instinct for tension and cinematic imagery, revealing the author’s cross-disciplinary strength in screenwriting and fiction.

The book’s opening is powerful. It establishes a reader’s emotional orientation immediately with grief, identity, and the dislocation between two worlds, which is an odd way to start a book, but he does it so well. The cross-cultural relationship between Elvis and Molly is explored with maturity and nuance, offering insight into how intimacy shifts when culture, trauma, and displacement intersect. Characters rarely fall into archetypes; instead, they feel like people we have known or could know.

From Glasgow Without Love is a deeply affecting, beautifully written work of contemporary diaspora fiction. Its emotional honesty, cultural intelligence, and immersive storytelling mark it as an important contribution to migrant literature in the UK. It provides a voice for experiences often misrepresented or unheard, portraying Glasgow through eyes that see both its challenges and its quiet, complicated beauty.

Albrin Junior emerges from this collection as a writer of exceptional emotional depth, narrative clarity, and cross-cultural relevance. This book will resonate deeply with readers interested in migration, identity, love, trauma, and what it truly means to build a life between two worlds.

  • Education accountability network seeks EFCC update on NSCDC investigation

Education accountability network seeks EFCC update on NSCDC investigation

The Education Accountability Network has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to provide a comprehensive update on its investigation involving senior officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

In a statement issued in Abuja and signed by its convener, Tola Abegunde, the network said transparent communication on the matter is vital because the NSCDC plays a key role in school protection under the Safe Schools Initiative.

Abegunde noted that the public deserves clarity on the progress of the probe, especially in view of recent security challenges affecting schools across the country.

The group referenced reports that some senior NSCDC officers were invited and handed over to the EFCC following earlier directives issued by the commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, to question officers and contractors linked to the case.

“The EFCC must inform Nigerians about the current status of this investigation,” Abegunde said, adding that providing updates would strengthen public confidence in the process.

The network stressed that concerns raised over procurement processes, contract approvals and financial management in the agency highlight the need for stronger institutional oversight.

It noted that while schools in several regions continue to face security risks, it is important for all funds designated for safeguarding educational institutions to be properly utilised.

Abegunde added that the network expects the investigation to be concluded and appropriate actions taken in line with the law.

The group also called on the federal government to ensure due process is followed, saying that accountability remains essential to restoring public trust in security institutions.

It further encouraged the Ministry of Interior and the National Security Adviser to strengthen oversight of the NSCDC to enhance procurement standards, financial controls and personnel conduct.

Abegunde reaffirmed the network’s commitment to promoting transparency in education governance and supporting efforts to keep learners safe across the country.
