Policy reforms, local production key to Nigeria’s financial stability in 2026 – Experts

Finance and accounting experts have urged Nigerian government to implement urgent policy reforms, diversify the economy, and boost local production to stabilize the nation’s finances ahead of 2026.

The experts warned that persistent inflation, currency devaluation, and over-reliance on oil threatens the sustainable economic growth of Nigeria.

Speaking at the first annual Dinner and Awards Night of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Lagelu and District Society, the Pioneer Chairman of ICAN Lagelu, Chief Mrs. Omokemi Oladipo (FCA) said harnessing collective expertise, supporting local production, and implementing sound policy reforms would be crucial to preparing Nigeria for the 2026 financial landscape.

Oladipo expressed optimism about Nigeria’s improving economic and financial state, noting that recent efforts by both the government and citizens are beginning to yield results.

She said, “The financial status of the country is improving. We are getting better. It’s not like it used to be in past years. Because of our efforts and the government’s, things are moving forward.”

She highlighted increased market activity, attributing it to more people engaging in farming and small business ventures, which she said has boosted food supply and economic transactions.

“Many people are bringing food products into the city, and they are buying and selling. Exposure to different types of businesses is enabling people to earn more and spend more. There is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Acknowledging ongoing economic hardships, she noted that currency depreciation has affected some allocations in the recently released state budget of approximately £9.5 million.

“We have depreciation of the Naira, definitely. So some adjustments had to be made. But everything being done is for the benefit of society. We will work within the budget framework to ensure amenities reach the people and improve their lives.”

She also lauded elders and stakeholders who have contributed to the society’s one-year development, emphasizing that collaboration between government, professionals, and citizens is essential for sustainable growth and stability.

In his remark, a Board Member of the Oyo State Anti-Corruption Agency, Prince Oyebade Oyedepo highlighted the fragility of Nigeria’s economy and called for urgent measures to stabilise it ahead of 2026.

He said, “Nigeria is not financially viable at the moment, despite our abundant resources. For meaningful growth, the government must invest in manufacturing, production, and agriculture, rather than relying heavily on oil and imports.”

He cited high interest rates, persistent inflation, and continuous devaluation of the Naira as major barriers to investment and economic stability.

“Policy reforms must focus on creating an enabling environment for production and entrepreneurship. Lowering interest rates and stabilising the currency are essential for encouraging investment and boosting local industries.”

He further noted that national security remains a prerequisite for economic growth, pointing out that insecurity across the country disrupts production and deters investors.

Also, a Chattered Accountant, Marcus Kayode Akobi described the country’s financial situation as strained but expressed optimism about future prospects.

He said, “While the economy is presently dwindling, Nigeria is blessed with abundant resources. The reforms we are seeing now are designed to bear fruit next year.”

Akobi stressed that national stability depends on the proper application of macroeconomic policies.

A Professor of Accounting and Strategic Financial Management, Ishola Rufus Akintoye, who delivered the keynote address, urged accountants to embrace vision, strategic thinking, and continuous learning as tools for personal and professional advancement.

Speaking on the theme “Honouring Distinction, Advancing Our Vision”, Prof. Akintoye said:

“A vision is more than a thought; it fuses past experiences with future aspirations. Excellence, continuous learning, and strong partnerships are fundamental to achieving success.”

In his welcome address, District Vice Chairman and Organising Committee Chairman, Mr. Patterson Ariemodiugno, lauded members for upholding the highest professional standards.

“This evening affords us the privilege of celebrating individuals who have embodied integrity, objectivity, accountability, and professionalism with remarkable commitment.”

The Lagelu and District Society of ICAN also honoured its members for their contributions to the financial sector.

Awards were presented to professionals including Honourable Williams Akin-Funmilayo, Dr. Taiwo Abideen Lasisi, Mr. Oluwalambe Tajudeen Akanni, Mr. Ephraim Oluwatoyin, FCTI, Dr. Olusola Akinloye, FCA, and Dr. Onifade Ayuba for their outstanding professional achievements and community service.

The evening featured the official unveiling of the Thrivers Journal, a publication showcase an insights of accountants within the district.

Also, there was fundraising for the secretariat of the district. Oloye Adegboyega Taofeek Adegoke, FCA, donated substantially to the project.

The immediate past Deputy Governor of Osun State and governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olugboyega Alabi, has dismissed reports that the party has adopted a preferred candidate ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election.

Alabi stated this on Monday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja after submitting his nomination and expression of interest forms for the December 13, 2025 party primary.

Responding to speculations that some party elders had endorsed one of the nine aspirants as a consensus candidate, he insisted there was no such arrangement.

“I am the deputy leader of the party in the state. There is no adoption of any aspirant in Osun State for the forthcoming election,” he said.

Alabi added that he received the support and blessings of his former boss, former governor and current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, before picking the forms.

  • How I combine stage management, music video production — Andrawine

How I combine stage management, music video production — Andrawine

Popular music video producer, Agah Chinecherem Alexandra, widely known as Andrawine has opened up on how she merge being a stage, floor manager and music producer simultaneously.

The very experienced music video producer who has worked with top artistes like Asake, Rotimi, Tiwa Savage, Adekunle Gold, Burna Boy, Fireboy, Davido and a host of others noted that working as a stage and floor manager at major events across Nigeria has been both intense and rewarding while also relieving the challenges

“It taught me how to think on my feet, coordinate large teams, and keep every moving part aligned no matter how chaotic things get backstage, she said. That experience sharpened my eye for timing, structure, and audience flow skills that translate perfectly into music video production.

“Merging both worlds has been very natural for me. Stage management gave me discipline, organisation, and the ability to anticipate problems before they happen. Music video production allowed me to bring in creativity, storytelling, and visual direction. So together, I’m able to balance the artistic side with strong technical and logistical execution. It’s helped me become a producer who not only understands the creative vision but also knows how to run a set efficiently and deliver high-quality results under pressure.”

Speaking on the most challenging stage she has managed, she said “One of the most challenging stages I’ve managed was Lagos countdown 2019 concert which was the largest event in Nigeria at the time, where multiple performers, live bands, and technical teams were rotating back-to-back with almost no buffer time. Everything depended on precise timing, and one small delay could have thrown off the entire lineup.

“What helped me overcome it was preparation and communication and team unity. I created a tight running order, made sure every department understood their cues, and stayed in constant contact with sound, lighting, and backstage teams. During the event, I had to remain calm, make quick decisions, and trust my team. In the end, the show ran smoothly, and it reminded me how important structure, teamwork, and clear leadership are in high-pressure environments.”

Andrawine has contributed to some of the biggest productions in the country, including Lagos Countdown 2019, Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), Lagos State Marathon, Kwese TV, The Headies, Soundcity MVP Festival, and Africa’s Champion Athletes, among others.

CCDI nominates Oborevwori for 2026 UN Public Service award

Centre for Convention on Democratic Integrity (CCDI), has nominated Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, for the 2026 United Nations Public Service Award (UNPSA).

The nomination was submitted under the thematic focus of Sustainable Development Goal 16-Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

In a statement by its President and Permanent Representative of CCDI to ECOSOC/United Nations, Comrade Olufemi Aduwo, the UN Public Service Award remains the foremost global recognition for excellence in public administration.

Aduwo explained that the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) follows a rigorous and multi-stage procedure in selecting recipients of the award.

According to him, the evaluation process begins with the independent verification of submissions from accredited bodies, followed by technical assessments carried out by international experts in governance, administrative reform, transparency, and institutional accountability.

Nominees who pass this stage are then subjected to a peer review by an intergovernmental panel to ensure that only candidates who demonstrate measurable impact, reformative leadership, and alignment with the SDGs are considered for the final award.

Aduwo noted that CCDI’s nomination of Oborevwori is based on the governor’s demonstrable efforts to strengthen public institutions, enhance citizen security, deepen community-centred conflict-resolution mechanisms, and widen access to justice across Delta State.

He added that CCDI’s institutional assessment of governance in the state dates back more than a decade, allowing for an objective comparison between past and current administrative performance.

He further observed that Oborevwori’s consolidation of peace-building frameworks, prudent management of public finances, and sustained investment in institutional resilience have positioned Delta State as a governance model deserving of international attention.

The CCDI’s president also recalled that the organisation had previously supported nominations that were eventually successful, including those of Mrs. Amina J. Mohammed in 2015 and Senator Ibikunle Amosun in 2019, each recognised for significant reforms in public-sector administration.

He stated that the current nomination continues CCDI’s tradition of evidence-based institutional evaluation and strict adherence to United Nations criteria.

Aduwo expressed confidence that Governor Oborevwori’s record satisfies the high standards of integrity, innovation, transparency, and societal impact required of UNPSA laureates.

Anietie Udoh shines in Ghana as Marketing Advocate of the Year

    • …Marking an unstoppable run of global honours

Like a diamond that shines bright no matter where it is placed, Anietie Udoh’s brilliance has continued to illuminate the marketing landscape with a radiance that refuses to be dimmed.

Excellence always finds expression, and his dedication to his craft keeps speaking loudly across borders. He has become a light on a hill, visible to all, a beacon of inspiration for peers and institutions across continents.

Now, in yet another compelling affirmation that true greatness cannot hide, he has been crowned Marketing Advocate of the Year at the 14th Marketing World Awards, held on November 27th at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

It is a recognition that confirms he is a treasure worth discovering, a gem whose shine continues to captivate the industry.

The ceremony, organised by the respected Instinct Wave Group, celebrated outstanding leadership and innovation in the marketing and communications community. The organisers highlighted that this recognition stands as a celebration of exceptional marketing achievements. Instinct Wave Group, an ISO 9001:2015 certified B2B events, media and digital consultancy with active presence in Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, Botswana and Kenya, prides itself on spotlighting professionals whose work moves industries forward.

Their message echoed a truth many in the industry already understand and that is, excellence can never be passed by or ignored, it must be acknowledged by those who truly recognise its value.

And indeed, this Ghanaian honour travelled across borders as if guided by purpose. It crossed distance, language, race, tribe and class to find a man who has consistently given his best, not for applause, but because excellence is his nature.

It is remarkable to imagine how excellence journeyed from Ghana to locate an individual simply doing his work with distinction. Though excellence and hard work belong to no tribe, language or race, they always belong to those who commit themselves wholeheartedly to their craft.

For years, Anietie Udoh has poured himself into leadership, brand building and strategic marketing with intentionality. He has never waited for recognition; he has simply insisted that the best must remain the best.

This accolade becomes even more meaningful when placed within the context of what has already been an unstoppable season of accomplishments. His year has unfolded like a masterclass in global visibility and professional elevation.

He has represented Nigeria on some of the biggest creative and marketing stages,  from the Native Advertising Awards in Copenhagen to the Effie Awards in South Africa, and the International ECHO Awards 2025 jury.

His influence has also shaped continental dialogue through the Digital Media Awards Africa, among others. Each appointment has amplified his voice in conversations that define modern storytelling, marketing effectiveness, and data-driven creativity.

Back home, his impact has been equally profound. At the 10th Nigeria Digital PR Summit in Lagos, he served not only as a panelist but was also honoured as a PR Ambassador, a distinction that acknowledged his growing role in shaping digital communication, influence building and narrative management within the industry. He has shown a rare blend of humility, firmness, discipline and empathy  qualities that consistently reflect in his leadership and interactions.

And now, as the year draws toward its close, the Lagos Advertising and Ideas Festival (LAIF) has appointed him as a juror in the Out of Home category for its landmark 2025 edition. This new role places him at the core of Nigeria’s creative evaluation ecosystem, allowing him to bring into LAIF’s jury room the global exposure he has earned and the local sensibilities he deeply understands. It is yet another proof that when a professional masters his craft with consistency, the world responds with trust.

The 14th Marketing World Awards itself emphasises why industry participation matters. It urges brands and professionals to showcase their achievements, boost morale, gain competitive advantage through strategic marketing, and network with leaders and specialists who shape the future of the industry. It is a platform built on the principle that excellence deserves visibility and Anietie Udoh’s win represents that ideal perfectly.

His story is a reminder that recognition may sometimes take time, but when excellence calls, the world answers. It shows that honour is not determined by proximity but by merit. It proves that the universe has a way of spotlighting those who pour their hearts into their work. As this unstoppable run of accolades continues, one thing becomes clear, which is, that, Anietie Udoh is not just collecting honours, but  building a legacy that transcends borders, disciplines and generations.

And through it all, he remains the same topnotch brand building expert whose work continues to speak loudly and whose journey keeps inspiring a continent.

  • Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun govts reassure residents on adequate security during, beyond festive season

Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun govts reassure residents on adequate security during, beyond festive season

The Joint Security Stakeholders for Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, and Osun states have reassured residents of the Southwest states and travellers that there will be adequate security and safety of lives and properties around their shared border areas and highways during and beyond the yuletide.

The committee gave this assurance on Friday while briefing newsmen after the fifth edition of the annual security stakeholders’ meeting held at the McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State.

Special Adviser on Security to the Governor of Oyo State, CP Fatai Owoseni (rtd), and his Ogun State counterpart, AIG Olusola Subair (rtd), announced an expansion in the security stakeholders’ meeting to include Lagos and Osun states.

They explained that the meeting was necessary for the committee to review, appraise the security architecture adopted last year; harmonise its activities, and also restrategise to strengthen the security measures put in place in their shared corridors for residents and people coming from the Diaspora to enjoy the yuletide.

They noted that the committee also discussed the management of the South-West Security Trust Fund as announced by the six governors of the region at a meeting in Ibadan last week.

They lauded the initiative, which is aimed at making the Southwest region remain safe amid the ongoing security threats.

The duo assured of more proactive measures and effective collaboration on security, saying the efforts would be jointly enforced with the traditional institutions and local governments

Owoseni said, “This is a follow-up meeting to the one we held last year. We usually hold this meeting annually. This is the fifth edition of this meeting, and we hold this to deliberate on how to secure our states, Oyo and Ogun.

“But this one is special in the sense that we have Lagos and Osun states joining us today. So we have four states gathered here to discuss how to secure our different states.

“We have come to some conclusions about some actions to take, because we know the yuletide is fast approaching. We are going to have our people from the Diaspora coming to celebrate here in Nigeria, and we want to give them the assurance that our states are safe for them to come and celebrate.

“So, that is why we are here today. We want to use this opportunity also to thank the management of McPherson University for allowing us to use their facility to hold this meeting.

“We have been having it in Oyo State, but this is the first time that we are having it in Ogun State. Dominion University has always been our host, but today we are having McPherson University as the host.

“We want to assure the general public that with the outcome of this meeting, it is going to be a crime-free yuletide.”

The Joint Security Stakeholders implored residents to be security-conscious before, during, and after the yuletide.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Special Adviser on Security to the Ogun State Governor, AIG Olushola Subair (Rtd), said the joint security meeting was to review the implementation strategies put in place to address security architecture during the last festive season.

He noted that the stakeholders’ meeting equally examined vulnerabilities along the expressway and feeder routes and agreed on coordinated actions and security measures for the upcoming yuletide.

He added that Oyo and Ogun states had continued to strengthen security agencies by closely supervising deployments, supporting personnel welfare and readiness through commitment to joint actions.

He urged all agencies to provide clear assessments, identify gaps, and be committed to the actionable measures required for a safer holiday period, and ensure the interstate and its corridors are well secured.

Speaking on the security architecture put in place by the governors of Oyo and Ogun states, the Vice-Chancellor, McPherson University, Prof. Francis Igbasan, commended both states for prioritising security matters with the efforts of the joint technical security committee, noting that the meeting would offer opportunity to harmonise operational strategies, deepen intelligence sharing, strengthen joint patrols and evolve common protocols that will make life unbearable for criminals around the two state borders.

The meeting had in attendance Security Chiefs from the four states, including the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Migration and Homeland Security, ACG Segun Adegoke (rtd); Special Adviser on Security to the Lagos State Governor, Dr Ayodele Ogunsan and his counterpart from Osun State, Barr Ojo Samuel, among others.

  • JUST IN: Nigeria secures Category C IMO seat

JUST IN: Nigeria secures Category C IMO seat

Nigeria has clinched a major diplomatic and maritime breakthrough with its election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 biennium, an influential seat the country last held 14 years ago.

The victory, announced on Friday during the IMO General Assembly in London, marks a strategic comeback for Africa’s largest maritime nation and signals a renewed push to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the $4 trillion global shipping industry.

The country’s successful bid was anchored by more than a year of high-level maritime diplomacy led by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who described the win as “a landmark endorsement of the renewed confidence the world has in Nigeria under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

According to him, “This victory is not just for Nigeria; it is a vote of confidence in our maritime reforms, our security efforts in the Gulf of Guinea, and the bold vision of His Excellency President Tinubu to unlock the full potential of the blue economy.”

Nigeria’s election—coming at a time when the country is intensifying maritime security operations, port system reforms, and blue economy investments—immediately strengthens its voice in shaping policies on shipping safety, marine environment protection, and global seaborne trade.

Oyetola stressed that the win repositions Nigeria in global maritime governance, saying, “Our return to the IMO Council after fourteen years signals that Nigeria is back — stronger, more strategic and more determined to contribute meaningfully to shaping the future of global shipping, maritime safety and sustainable ocean governance.”

He noted that the campaign involved “travelling across continents, building bridges and reaffirming Nigeria’s readiness” to resume a leadership role in multilateral maritime engagement.

The minister credited the victory to the political will of President Tinubu, acknowledging that his support proved decisive in a highly competitive election year.

“Mr President gave us every encouragement, every backing, and every resource we needed to prosecute this campaign. His leadership opened doors and inspired immense goodwill from across the world,” Oyetola said.

He further thanked the international maritime community for their confidence, adding, “Nigeria will serve with integrity, commitment, and a strong sense of responsibility.”

Oyetola commended the Technical Committee of Experts, chaired by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oloruntola, describing their coordination as critical in securing the win.

The committee provided technical briefs, built alliances across maritime blocs, and ensured alignment with IMO priorities on safety, decarbonisation, innovation, and sustainable oceans.

With the election, Nigeria joins 19 other countries in IMO Category C—nations recognised for their “special interest in maritime transport and navigation” and chosen to promote balanced global representation.

The 20 elected Category C members include Bahamas, Belgium, Cyprus, Chile, Egypt, Finland, Indonesia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and South Africa.

Nigeria will sit alongside major shipping and maritime innovation hubs, placing it in a stronger position to attract technical support, deepen port modernisation programmes, and unlock foreign investment across coastal infrastructure, shipbuilding, marine tourism, and inland waterways logistics.

The government expects the return to the Council to boost investor confidence, amplify Nigeria’s anti-piracy efforts in the Gulf of Guinea, and enhance its access to IMO-backed maritime safety and environmental protection initiatives.

Looking ahead, Oyetola pledged that the ministry would accelerate domestic maritime reforms to justify the international confidence reflected in the election.

“We have earned the world’s confidence. Now we must deepen our reforms, strengthen our institutions, and ensure that Nigeria takes its rightful place as a leading maritime nation,” he said.

Nigeria’s victory came as the country pushes to expand its maritime GDP contribution, leverage its strategic 853km coastline, and attract new investment into deepwater logistics, coastal shipping, port automation, and blue economy industries.
