  • FG, Korea train additional 1,500 civil servants to drive digital innovations

FG, Korea train additional 1,500 civil servants to drive digital innovations

Following the collaboration between the Federal government and the Korean government, more senior civil servants and middle-level officers are being trained in the United States and at the Federal level to drive Nigeria’s digital innovations and transformation of the economy.

In states such as Nasarawa, Cross Rivers, Lagos, Enugu, and Jigawa, more than 1,000 civil servants have been trained by Korean experts on data governance, digital inclusiveness, and smart cities.

The collaboration also facilitated the training of an additional 500 civil servants drawn from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the federal government.

The training programme tagged “Devs in Government” was an innovation of the Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency, KOICA, and supported by Galaxy Backbone Limited.

Aimed at driving digital transformation for sustainable development and improved Gross Domestic Product (GDP, the programme enjoys the support of all Agencies under the Ministry of Communications, Innovations, and Digital Economy.

Speaking yesterday at the start of its 2026 edition at the Digital Economy Complex, Mbora, Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Nadungu Gagare, said the programme is meant to recalibrate Nigeria’s digital journey in line with global standards, and for the benefit of the people.

Nadungu said the theme of this edition: “Preparing Public Servants for the Digital Era”, not only attests to the seriousness the government attaches to the programme, but also to the number of experts brought from Korea and Botswana to share experiences on the country’s digital journey.

Gajere, represented by the Director of ICT in the Ministry, Mrs Folashade Olojede, said “data”, widely recognised as the new oil, would remain a mere message without “refinery” in Nigeria if the digital skills and knowledge required to drive the digital era are not available.

He said government investments in the training programme and the collaboration with critical stakeholders are testimonies that speak to the government’s intention to move the digital technology sector forward and ensure that citizens and government derive the desired benefits thereof.

He said the strive for digital transformation would only be successful when it is inclusive, adding that civil servants in the country are expected to ensure that government services reach the rural communities and impact lives positively.

He said to live in a digital world, the public service must evolve from being a traditional regulator to becoming a data-driven engine of innovation, noting that the January edition was not just a meeting but the framework to make technology work for civil servants.

“By partnering with Korea Government, Korea Institute for Development and Strategy (KIDS), we are not just learning theory, we are all about absorbing decades of practical global experience.

“We must ensure that our services reach the last mile, ensuring that people in the village can have access to the internet, technology, as well as the tech experts in the city.

“We are starting this year with a very clear intention to move beyond simply talking about technology to start mastering the framework to make technology work for the people of Nigeria,” he said.

The Senior Deputy Country Director, KOICA, Nigeria Office, Mr Ki-Hyun Baik, said that the training programme was a core component of KOICA’s broader e-Governance project in Nigeria.

He said that it was designed to systematically strengthen the capacity of government officials to plan, implement, and manage digital government systems across Nigeria.

According to Baik, KOICA has trained both federal and state civil servants in digital service delivery, stressing that the training is meant to improve productivity and the country’s GDP.

He said KOICA had delivered e-Government capacity-building programmes across five states, namely: Nasarawa, Cross River, Jigawa, Lagos, and Enugu, with Bauchi being next in line.

He applauded the Minister of FMCIDE, Dr Bosun Tijani, for organising the DevsInGovernment programme to shape the digital future of Nigeria.

“I just had a meeting with the Minister this morning, and I remember how he mentioned and actually accentuated the importance of DevsInGovernment for shaping the future of Nigeria in the digital sector.

“The project deliberately integrates federal-level and sub-national interventions to ensure consistency, scalability, and long-term sustainability.”

“Collectively, the Devs in Government at state-level programmes have trained approximately 1,000 government officials, while more than 500 at the federal level benefit currently in the 2026 edition.’ he added.

  • Alaafin commissions Ile Oodua, reaffirms Oyo palace as symbol of Yoruba identity

Alaafin commissions Ile Oodua, reaffirms Oyo palace as symbol of Yoruba identity

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, has described the Oyo Palace as more than a cultural and historical landmark, calling it a living museum that preserves Yoruba heritage and promotes unity among the people.

In a message delivered on Friday at the commissioning of the Oodua House within the Palace, the monarch, represented by Prince Kabir Owoade, said the Palace offers a unique window into the rich history and traditions of the Yoruba.

Oba Owoade reaffirmed Oyo’s status as the Seat of Yorubaland and the Home of Yoruba heritage, underscoring its enduring role in safeguarding the cultural identity and legacy of the Yoruba people.

He said, “The establishment of Ile Oodua inside the ancient palace grounds acts as a heritage carved in stone, reinforcing the connection between the Alaafin and the progenitor of the Yoruba race.

“The Alaafin’s palace, a symbol of Yoruba heritage and authority, has transitioned from a royal residence to a significant cultural and historical landmark. While it retains its traditional essence, the Palace has also adapted to the changing times, reflecting its enduring significance and the challenges of modernisation. The Palace remains one of Nigeria’s most important historical structures.

“The Alaafin’s palace is thus a deserving location for the establishment of the Oduduwa House due to its historical status as the epicenter of the Oyo Empire, its role as the custodian of Yoruba political, cultural, and military legacy, and its direct, unbroken lineage to Oduduwa through Oranmiyan.

“The Alaafin dynasty traces its roots directly to Oranmiyan, the son of Oduduwa and the founder of the Oyo Empire. Oranmiyan is a foundational figure in Yoruba history, making the Palace the seat of the Oranmiyan lineage, and the Progenitor of Yoruba kings.”

While lauding the facilitator of the project, who is also the Asiwaju Awo of Oyo Kingdom and the Chairman, Isese Worshipping Committee, Chief Onifade Olanipekun, for his unalloyed commitment to the progress and development of his country home and the Oyo traditional monarchy, Alaafin stressed the need for collaborative efforts towards the sustenance of peace and the much-needed progress in Yorubaland.

Earlier in his welcome address, Chief Olanipekun, who described the Alaafin’s Palace as the heart of Yoruba civilization, said it is recognized as a living museum and where many of the most significant historical, political, and traditional events of the Yoruba people have been preserved for centuries.

Chief Olanipekun pointed out that the Oduduwa house will not only serve as a central hub for Yoruba heritage but strengthens the Alaafin’s role as a unifying force across Yorubaland.

“Historically, the Oyo Empire was the most powerful state in Yoruba history, and the Alaafin served as the paramount ruler. The Palace represents the centralized authority that once unified a vast area, making it a fitting home for a monument to Oduduwa, the father of many Yoruba monarchs

“The establishment of the new Ile Oduduwa house within the ancient palace grounds acts as a bold declaration of the Alaafin’s Oduduwa roots, ensuring that the legacy of Oranmiyan is visibly upheld in the centre of Oyo’s royal, administrative, and cultural life.

“The palace is not just a building but a Citadel of the Yoruba race that embodies the strength, unity, and heritage of the Yoruba people, making it a deserving location to honour Oduduwa.”

The Asiwaju Awo further asserted that building a house for Oduduwa in the Alaafin’s Palace is imperative because it serves as the cornerstone of Yoruba cultural identity, spiritual continuity, and political unity, adding that Oduduwa is revered as the progenitor of the Yoruba race, the founder of their civilization, and the source of all crowned kings (Obas).

Members of the Isese Worshipping Committee, led by its Chairman Chief Olanipekun, later paid a courtesy visit to the Alaafin for the offering of New Year prayers.

NCAA gives airlines 7-day ultimatum to integrate special needs features on ticket reservations

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has directed all domestic airlines operating in Nigeria to include a mandatory special needs/assistance request feature on their ticket reservation systems.

The directive, according to the NCAA, is to ensure full compliance with provisions for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM) and passengers with disabilities.

The agency, while stating that airlines are to comply within seven days of receipt of the directive, warned that non-compliance may attract regulatory enforcement in line with applicable aviation regulations.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of NCAA, Michael Achimugu, on behalf of the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo.

The statement reads, “The Authority recalls its earlier correspondence with reference No. NCAA/CPD/585/1/22 dated 13 April 2022, which directed all domestic airlines to conspicuously place on their online ticket reservation platforms a mandatory field, box, or column through which passengers may request assistance or give advance notice of special needs before ticket purchase.

Alleged cyberstalking: Court grants actress Angela Okorie N5m bail

    • …trial begins March 23

Detained actress, Angela Okorie, got a reprieve on Friday as a Federal High Court in Abuja granted her bail at N5million and a surety in the same amount.

Justice Emeka Nwite had on January 28 ordered her remand to Suleja prison in Niger State following her arraignment on charges of criminal defamation and cyberstalking.

On Friday, while ruling on Okorie’s bail application, Justice Nwite held that although the prosecution opposed her request for bail, there was no concrete evidence before the court to show that she would jump bail if granted.

The judge said, “Therefore, I am minded to grant the bail in the interest of justice,” adding that bail is at the discretion of the court, which must be exercised judicially and judiciously.

Justice Nwite ordered that the defendant’s sole surety must be a level 13 civil servant, who must depose to an affidavit of means

He said the surety must produce his appointment letter and the letter of the last promotion.

The judge ordered Okorie and her surety to submit two passport photographs to the court registrar, and that the residence of the surety must be verified by the registrar.

Justice Nwite, who adjourned the matter until March 23 for trial, ordered Okorie to be further remanded in Suleja prison pending her compliance with the bail conditions.

At the commencement of proceedings on Friday, prosecuting lawyer, Victor Okoye, informed the court about a seven-count amended charge filed by the prosecution and applied that the defendant’s plea be taken in relation to the amended charge.

Justice Nwite granted Okoye’s application, following which Okorie was re-arraigned on the seven-count amended charge.

She pleaded not guilty, following which Okoye applied for a date for the prosecution to open its case.

Okorie of 1 Henry Montero Street, Lekki Palm City, Ajah, Lagos, is alleged, in the amended charge, marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/278/2025, to have conspired with Ifeoma Mbonu (now at large) to commit cyberstalking and defamation by calling a fellow actress, Mercy Johnson Okojie, a blood-sucking demon in their posts on their social media platforms of Instagram and TikTok.

Okorie’s case stemmed from a petition by Mercy Johnson Okojie’s lawyer, in which sundry allegations were made against her and Ifeoma.

Part of the petition, dated May 14, 2025, reads, “Most alarmingly, in a recent criminal and defamatory publication, Angela Okorie published the following statement via her Instagram page @ realagelaokorie: ‘Blood sucking demon no see blood suck again, E say na slimming tea. Except there’s no God, MJ go and beg people you chop their destinies and destroy their homes else no peace for the wicked!!! Gospel songs won’t save you. Your heart Is Dark!!!’

“This malicious statement, clearly targeted at our client, was published with the intent to cause irreparable reputational injury, incite hatred, provoke unrest among the public, and further harass and emotionally traumatize our client.

“The tone, content, and framing of the publication aim to portray our client as a destructive person, despite her widely known public image as a humanitarian and devout Christian mother.

“The principal suspect, Angela Okorie, has demonstrated a relentless and calculated effort to incite public hatred and threaten public peace by repeatedly using her social media platform for criminal intimidation, false accusations, and criminal defamation.

“She has become the most aggressive and persistent in this malicious campaign.”

  • FG, partners intensify awareness campaign against neglected tropical diseases

FG, partners intensify awareness campaign against neglected tropical diseases

The federal government, in collaboration with development partners and civil society organisations, has intensified public awareness efforts on Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), warning Nigerians against ignoring illnesses that often progress silently but cause long-term physical, social, and economic damage.

The stakeholders called for increased funding, early case detection, consistent drug availability, and stronger grassroots engagement as Nigeria pushes toward eliminating neglected tropical diseases.

Nigeria carries one of the heaviest global burdens of NTDs.

The Head of Monitoring and Evaluation of the NTD Control Programme, Gambo Yakubu, disclosed that data from recent reports show that 583 of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas are endemic for lymphatic filariasis.

Yakubu said the scale of other NTDs remains equally troubling, with onchocerciasis or river blindness present in about 480 LGAs, schistosomiasis in 583 LGAs, soil-transmitted helminths in 424 LGAs, and trachoma affecting 133 LGAs nationwide.

“These diseases are called neglected because they don’t receive the attention they deserve, yet they are silently killing and disabling people, especially in tropical regions like Nigeria,” Yakubu said.

He spoke in Abuja during a public awareness walk held on Friday to mark the 2026 World NTDs Day, which took participants from Wuse Market to Utako.

The event drew health officials, development partners, civil society groups, persons affected by NTDs, and other stakeholders.

Citing Lymphatic Filariasis (LF), commonly known as elephantiasis, as an example, Chinwe Okoye, National Programme Manager for Lymphatic Filariasis at the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, said the disease remains one of the most underestimated in Nigeria, despite its widespread impact.

Read Also: Govt to tackle transboundary diseases, pests

She noted that about 119 million Nigerians are currently at risk of lymphatic filariasis, representing nearly half of the global burden and about a quarter of Africa’s cases.

Stressing that the scale of exposure makes public knowledge and early prevention critical, Okoye said, “When people hear that NTDs are neglected, they assume they are not important. But because they are neglected does not mean they are harmless.

“Lymphatic Filariasis can stay in your body for five to ten years, silently destroying the lymph cells, and the carrier won’t even know.”

According to her, World NTDs Day, observed annually, is designed to mobilise governments, communities, and partners around the global theme ‘Unite, Act and Eliminate’, with a focus on ending diseases that perpetuate disability, stigma, and poverty.

Okoye further explained that LF is transmitted through mosquito bites and thrives in environments with poor sanitation and high mosquito density, conditions common in many parts of the country.

“The mosquito that bites you today can infect another person tomorrow. And we all know what mosquitoes are doing in Nigeria daily. That is why this disease must not be taken lightly,” she added.

On the consequences of delayed LF treatment, Okoye said visible symptoms such as swollen limbs and enlarged scrotum often appear only at advanced stages, when damage has already been done.

“Once the leg becomes that big, it cannot return to normal. That is why early prevention is critical. The shame, emotional trauma, and economic losses are enormous,” she said.

Speaking on behalf of development partners, Ms. Sarah Pantuvo of The Carter Center said the 2026 theme emphasises collective responsibility.

“Unite, Act, and Eliminate means decisive action, sustained funding, strong political will, and community ownership. Everyone has a role to play,” she said.

She disclosed that The Carter Center currently works in 10 States and has supported the elimination of lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis in Plateau and Nasarawa States, making them the first states in Nigeria to achieve that milestone.

She emphasised that sustained, coordinated efforts and strong political will from both the government and development partners are essential to effectively combat neglected tropical diseases.

Meanwhile, Peter Teweyuki, President of AIDA Nigeria, an association of persons affected by leprosy, called for improved access to NTD medications and timely treatment.

“For the past two years, there have been challenges with the availability of leprosy drugs. When treatment is delayed, people develop disabilities, and that leads to stigma and discrimination,” he said.

Military refutes viral video of ‘captured’ IPOB commander ‘Gentle the Yahoo’

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has debunked a viral video in which an Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) commander, Ifeanyi Eze Okorienta, popularly known as Gentle De Yahoo, was seen claiming that he was alive and had returned.

The military high command, speaking through the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, during a press briefing on Friday, stated that the video might have been generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

In October 2025, the military announced that troops operating under Operation UDO KA captured “Gentle the Yahoo,” a notorious commander linked to the IPOB and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

He was linked to growing attacks in the Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State, including the murder of three of his fighters in the area.

In a video released yesterday, a visibly limping Gentle the Yahoo announced his return, alleged that he was poisoned while in government custody, and vowed to restore peace to Okigwe, amid warnings to the governors of Imo and Anambra states, Hope Uzodimma and Chukwuma Soludo.

However, Major General Onoja noted that such videos were not impossible, especially given the prevalence of social media and artificial intelligence.

He said, “What I can say is that in this era of AI, it is possible to create anything just to destabilize and cause panic within society.”

The Defence spokesperson said the military would look more closely into the video and the claims, and reaffirmed that the armed forces and other security agencies would remain committed to pursuing criminals to guarantee peace across the country.

“Notwithstanding, we will take necessary action, with relevant security agencies, to confirm if it is true that he is back, and then necessary action will be taken to contain any individual or group that threatens our security,” Onoja said.

Police gun down suspected kidnap kingpin in Delta, recover AK-47, other firearms

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected kidnapping kingpin, Liberty Kunu, following a fierce gun battle with police operatives during a recovery operation that also led to the seizure of an AK-47 rifle and other firearms.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Aina Adesola, revealed this during a press briefing at the Command’s headquarters in Asaba on Friday.

The CP said sequel to a series of complaints bordering on kidnapping, abduction, and other violent crimes linked to one Liberty Kunu, popularly known as Commander Liberty or Double Agent, and his gang, he directed the Divisional Police Officer, Sapele, to deploy all available operatives to unravel the group’s activities.

CP Adesola said on January 17, 2026, the Command received a report on the abduction of three persons (names withheld) at Boyo Road Junction, Sapele.

He said that while being taken to a bush location, one of the victims escaped and reported at a nearby police station, noting that the remaining two victims were dispossessed of valuables worth ₦9 million.

The CP said preliminary investigation revealed that the crime was carried out by a syndicate led by Liberty Kunu, who operated under the guise of a security volunteer group (SOS).
