Okpebholo orders grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu’s re-election

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has inaugurated the Edo State chapter of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA) with a task to intensify grassroots mobilisation for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu.

Governor Okpebholo ordered members of the RHA to erect 320 billboards across the 18 local government areas.

Okpebholo said his administration would leave no stone unturned to ensure victory for President Tinubu.

He asked the Ambassadors to liaise with local government Chairmen and take the message of the Renewed Hope to the people.

According to him, “No government can beat Asiwaju’s record in this country. The man has proved himself. We are ready for the election.

“The APC has 30 Governors. Even if we go to sleep, Asiwaju will win. This is a man who was frustrated, and he overcame all obstacles. Is it now that we have petrol and we have money that he will not win?

“You must have more than 20 billboards in each local government area. Take the message of renewed hope to the grassroots. Let everyone know about Renewed Hope. We will not leave any stone unturned. We will deliver on our promises.”

Edo State Coordinator of RHA said it was a call to duty and entrusted with a strategic responsibility to serve as bridges between the government, party leadership, and grassroots.

He said the successes of the project at the local level depended largely on their commitment, discipline, and dedication.

“As Renewed Hope Ambassadors, you are expected to work closely with the leadership of our great party to evangelise, explain, and defend the policies, programmes, and achievements of President Tinubu’s administration.

“You must promote harmony, inclusiveness, and effective coordination across all levels of the party within your respective Senatorial District and LGAs.

“Your task also includes mobilising, engaging, and sensitising the people, working hand in hand with our party leaders who are themselves Ambassadors of Hope to ensure that the message of Renewed Hope resonates in every community.”

Joint security team neutralises kidnap suspect, rescues victim in Enugu

Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command, in a joint operation with the Nigerian Army, Forest Guards, Neighbourhood Watch Group, and local vigilantes, have neutralised a kidnapping suspect and rescued an abducted victim in Udenu Local Government Area of the state.

The operation followed a distress report received in the early hours of Wednesday, January 29, 2026, that a male victim had been kidnapped by armed men in the Ezimo-Uno community.

Acting swiftly on the report, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered the immediate mobilisation of security operatives to track the kidnappers and rescue the victim.

The coordinated operation led the joint team to the Agu-Shere and Okpakereke forest areas, where the suspects were reportedly hiding.

According to the police, the kidnappers opened fire on the operatives on sight, prompting a gun duel during which one of the suspects was neutralised, while others escaped into the forest areas bordering Benue State with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

The kidnapped victim was rescued unhurt.

CP Giwa reassured residents of Enugu State of the unwavering commitment of the police and other security agencies to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

He urged members of the public, especially health and medical service providers, to promptly report anyone sighted with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station or security formation.

Tinubu loyalist Darazo warns against political schemes threatening democracy

Khamis Musa Darazo, a loyalist of President Bola Tinubu, has condemned what he described as escalating political maneuvers aimed at undermining the President, warning that such actions pose a threat to Nigeria’s democratic stability and national interest.

Speaking to journalists in Bauchi, Darazo said attempts to target President Tinubu for selfish or sectional reasons constitute a political wrongdoing against Nigerians, who freely conferred him a constitutional mandate through the ballot.

He added that opposition driven by personal ambition rather than genuine concern for national progress not only weakens democracy but also disrespects the will of the electorate.

“Plotting against President Tinubu for selfish interests is a political crime the masses will not forgive,” Darazo said.

“While democracy encourages constructive criticism, it does not accommodate conspiracies aimed at hijacking the people’s mandate.”

Darazo maintained that the President deserves the political space to pursue reforms targeted at economic stabilization, institutional strengthening, and national cohesion.

He warned that premature power struggles distract leaders from governance and erode public trust in the democratic process.

He further urged political actors to embrace issue-based engagement and support policies that advance national development instead of promoting division for personal advantage.

“The Nigerian people are watching,” he said. “History will not be kind to those who place personal ambition above the collective interest of the nation.”

Darazo also called on citizens, particularly youths, to remain vigilant and resist narratives capable of destabilizing the country, stressing that sustainable progress can only be achieved through respect for democratic institutions and the rule of law.

Enugu slashes land rates by 60%, bans illegal levies

The Enugu State Government has announced sweeping reforms in the land sector, including the immediate abolition of illegal levies and the streamlining of land-related charges, as part of Governor Peter Mbah’s broader economic transformation agenda.

The government disclosed that ground rent, land use charge, and all property-related charges have now been unified and reduced by over 60 per cent, with property owners required to pay only a single Unified Land Use Charge annually through the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), whether their properties are located within estates or outside them.

Governor Peter Mbah made the announcement at a stakeholders’ town hall meeting on land sector development, which held at the International Conference Centre, Enugu, on Thursday.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the Governor said his administration remained committed to building a transparent, efficient, and investor-friendly land administration system anchored on legality, digitisation, and accountability.

He described land as the legal foundation for housing, infrastructure, agriculture, commerce, and investment, stressing that since inception, the administration has pursued deliberate reforms to modernise land governance, reduce uncertainty, curb abuse, and restore public confidence in the land tenure system.

“These reforms are anchored on transparency, predictability, digitisation of records, and strict adherence to statutory processes for land allocation, registration, and development control,” he said, adding that effective land governance must be driven by continuous engagement with communities, professionals, investors, traditional institutions, and citizens.

A major highlight of the reforms is the immediate ban on the controversial Ogbonecheagu fees collected by some communities and local governments. Prof. Onyia said Governor Mbah has declared all such fees illegal and directed their outright abolition following widespread complaints by residents.

A task force has been constituted to enforce compliance, while members of the public who are compelled to pay such illegal charges have been urged to submit evidence to Whistleblowing@enugustate.gov.ng for prompt intervention.

The SSG further revealed that the reforms were informed by the recommendations of a multi-stakeholder Committee on Land-Related Revenue and Administration constituted by the Governor to address complaints of multiple taxation and revenue abuse in the state.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development, Barr. Chimaobi Okorie, said Governor Mbah has introduced critical policy directions and legal instruments, including an executive order declaring nine of the state’s seventeen local government areas as urban areas to enable planning and structured infrastructural development.

He also said that the Mbah Administration enacted the Enugu State Geographic Information System (ENGIS) law to serve as a one-stop platform for land transactions and to drive the full digitisation and digitalization of land processes and systems. According to him, land records are now fully harmonised, eliminating cases of missing files, while every plot of land in the state can be digitally tracked.

Shina Peller celebrates Oyo at 50, hails ‘Golden Governor’ Makinde

In a spirited celebration of Oyo State’s 50th anniversary, the Ayedero of Yorubaland, Hon. Shina Peller, has named Governor Seyi Makinde as the “Golden Governor.”

In a statement on Friday, Peller reflected on the state’s journey since its creation from the old Western State in February 1976.

He lauded the “Pacesetter State” for its historical role as a beacon of excellence in politics, education, commerce, and culture.

Also, Peller emphasized that the Golden Jubilee is a testament to the collective progress of the people across all zones, including the iconic brown roofs of Ibadan, the resource-rich Oke-Ogun, the royal plains of Oyo, and the vibrant communities of Ogbomoso and Ibarapa.

“This Golden Jubilee celebrates our resilience, unity, and progress,” Peller stated. “Fifty years of challenges and triumphs bound by common destiny and enterprise spirit,” he added.

The former lawmaker noted that Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership coincides with this historic milestone, making him the “leader chosen by destiny” to usher the state into its next half-century. He cited several key achievements under the Omituntun administration as justification for the “Golden Governor” title:

According to Peller, Makinde’s tenure has been characterised by unprecedented development, specifically highlighting key areas like infrastructure, civil service welfare, youth inclusion in governance and institutional reform.

Speaking on infrastructure, Peller referenced the ongoing upgrade of Ibadan Airport to international status and the construction of the Circular Road to drive economic expansion.

He lauded the consistent, timely payment of civil servants’ salaries and the historic initiation of the 13th-month bonus by the governor.

In addition, the Oke Ogun-born businessman cum politician highlighted the youth inclusion in Makinde’s government as another noteworthy act of the governor, adding that he provided tangible opportunities for the younger generation to participate in high-level governance, creating a new generation of leaders with the OMITUNTUN initiative.

He also commended the governor for his institutional reform, referencing his creation of robust institutions to ensure optimal performance and transparency.

Peller maintained that through the “Omituntun” initiative, the governor has successfully jettisoned the old “promise and fail” systems of the past, replacing them with a system built on trust and delivery.

Peller, who is out of the country in preparation for the third edition of the Global Entrepreneurship Festival (GEF), issued the statement from Egypt.

GEF maiden and second edition was held in Nigeria and Ghana respectively, while the third one will hold in Egypt November 2026.

  • Ondo seaport symbolises economic rebirth, says DOME

Ondo seaport symbolises economic rebirth, says DOME

The management of the International Event and Cultural Centre, The DOME, has described the proposed Ondo Seaport and Refinery projects at the Ilaje Local Government Area of the state as transformative initiatives capable of repositioning Ondo State as a major industrial and maritime hub in Nigeria.

The management said the projects would unlock massive investments, create thousands of jobs, and significantly boost the state’s internally generated revenue.

This came after Governor Aiyedatiwa declared that the deep seaport would be delivered before the end of his administration.

Aiyedatiwa described the project as a game-changer for the state’s economic future.

Recall that the seaport project was approved by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and recently had its licence revalidated by the federal government.

But in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Managing Director of Cavudos Nigeria Limited, managers of The Dome, Prince Akinwunmi Falodun, the projects were described as bold and visionary steps towards economic prosperity.

Falodun commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for what he called the administration’s passion and clarity of purpose in pursuing the realisation of the seaport and refinery, urging the government to sustain the political will required to complete them.

“The Ondo Seaport and Refinery represent more than infrastructure. They symbolise opportunity, economic rebirth and a future where Ondo State fully harnesses its coastal advantage and natural endowments for the benefit of its people,” the statement read.

According to him, the successful delivery of the projects would open the state to global trade and investment while stimulating growth in logistics, manufacturing, hospitality, and other service sectors.

He noted that the ripple effects would redefine the state’s role in the national economy.

Falodun also linked the state’s 50th anniversary celebration to a forward-looking development agenda, describing the Golden Jubilee as an opportunity for reflection and renewed commitment to sustainable growth.

He congratulated the government and people of the state on the milestone, describing the last five decades as a journey marked by resilience, cultural pride and steady progress.

The Dome management further praised Aiyedatiwa’s leadership style, particularly his emphasis on partnership, institutional continuity, and confidence-building, which it said has enabled public facilities like The Dome to thrive.

“The sustained support of the Ondo State Government has allowed The Dome to serve not merely as a structure, but as a living civic space that brings people together and reflects the aspirations of our state,” he said.

Falodun paid tribute to the people of Ondo State, describing them as the true drivers of development through their unity and communal spirit.

He reaffirmed The Dome’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote economic growth, cultural expression, and meaningful civic engagement across the state.

“As Ondo State looks beyond its first fifty years, visionary projects such as the seaport and refinery, pursued with consistency and integrity, will define a more prosperous future,” the statement added.

  • Foundation urges media to support advocacy for special legislative seats for women

Foundation urges media to support advocacy for special legislative seats for women

With less than 30 days to a critical National Assembly vote, advocates of the Reserved Seats for Women Bill have warned that failure to pass the legislation by February could delay meaningful female representation in Nigerian politics until at least 2031, undermining efforts toward inclusive governance ahead of the 2027 general election.

The warning was issued in Abuja during a high-level briefing with editors and bureau chiefs of major media organisations, convened by TOS Foundation Africa as the proposed constitutional amendment enters its crucial third-reading stage in the National Assembly.

The session, held at NOLA, Abuja, brought together Editors-in-Chief, senior editors, and media executives. Organisers described the coming weeks as a “now-or-never” moment for the Bill, which seeks to address Nigeria’s persistent gender imbalance in legislative representation.

Chief Osasu Igbinedion-Ogwuche, convener of the campaign and CEO of TOS Group, highlighted Nigeria’s low ranking in women’s political participation despite women making up nearly half of the population.

“Women make up about 50 per cent of Nigeria’s population, yet they occupy just four per cent of seats in parliament,” she said. “Out of 360 members of the House of Representatives, only 16 are women. In the Senate, just four out of 109. Across the 36 State Houses of Assembly, only 51 out of 993 lawmakers are women, and in more than 16 states, there is not a single woman legislator.”

The Bill proposes the creation of 74 additional seats in the National Assembly and 108 reserved seats across the 36 State Houses of Assembly, to be contested exclusively by women through elections rather than appointments.

“This is not tokenism,” Igbinedion-Ogwuche said. “These are elective positions. Political parties will field candidates, women will compete among themselves, and the most competent will emerge. The aim is to open up a political space that has historically shut women out through violence, culture, religion, and structural barriers.”

She argued that effective lawmaking on issues such as maternal mortality, child nutrition, and women’s welfare requires the presence of women at decision-making levels. “You cannot legislate for people without them being present,” she said.

The briefing also sought to address misconceptions surrounding the Bill, which has faced resistance in previous assemblies. Earlier versions, including the Gender and Equal Opportunities Bill, failed in the 8th and 9th National Assemblies, largely on cultural and religious grounds.

According to Igbinedion-Ogwuche, those experiences informed a broader consultation process this time. She said the Bill has received endorsements from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the First Lady, over 50 senators, the Senate President, the Speaker, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as the Governors’ Spouses Forum.

“We were told before that we didn’t consult enough. This time, nobody can make that claim,” she said.

Advocacy Lead at TOS Group, Barrister Andikan, described the Bill as a “democratic correction” rather than a gender empowerment initiative, noting that some State Assemblies currently have no female representation.

“This is about fixing a structural democratic deficit,” she said, citing global evidence that quota systems help fast-track reforms and improve outcomes in health, education and collaborative governance.

She urged the media to frame the Bill as an issue of justice, governance and national development, rather than a contest between men and women.

During an interactive session, editors raised concerns about resistance from political parties, grassroots sensitisation, cultural factors, and the timing of a constitutional amendment close to elections. In response, Igbinedion-Ogwuche said extensive faith-based engagements had been undertaken, including endorsements from Islamic clerics and the Sultan of Sokoto, to counter religious objections.

She added that caucus meetings had been held across the six geopolitical zones and that constituency-level mobilisation was ongoing to ensure lawmakers are held accountable by their constituents.

“Lawmakers have the votes. Our job is to make sure their constituents are watching,” she said.

As part of the advocacy drive, TOS Foundation Africa has launched the “469Tracker,” a digital platform that tracks the public and private positions of all 469 federal lawmakers on the Bill to promote transparency and accountability.

Organisers stressed that failure to pass the Bill by February would make it impossible to operationalise it ahead of the 2027 elections, effectively sidelining women for another electoral cycle.

“That would mean keeping 50 per cent of Nigeria’s population on the sidelines for four more years,” Igbinedion-Ogwuche warned.

Participants agreed that while alternative options, including executive sponsorship, remain available, the Bill has made unprecedented progress through the legislature and must be pushed to completion.

The briefing concluded with a clear message: the next 30 days will determine whether Nigeria’s democracy expands to accommodate women more fully—or postpones that decision until the next decade.

  • Delta govt cracks down on Asaba waterfront encroachment, threatens mass demolition

Delta govt cracks down on Asaba waterfront encroachment, threatens mass demolition

The Delta state government has issued a stern warning to developers and the public to stay off the Asaba Waterfront City project site, vowing to demolish all illegal structures within the area.

The Special Project Director, Hon. Barr. Victor Ebonka gave the warning during an inspection tour of the site in Asaba, alongside officials of the Ministry of Lands and Surveys.

He stressed that the government will not tolerate any form of encroachment on the flagship project.

Ebonka explained that the entire expanse of land designated for the Asaba Waterfront City had been duly acquired by the state government, fully gazetted, and that all rightful landowners had been adequately compensated before the acquisition.

He stressed that the land is government-owned and therefore highly encumbered.

He expressed concern that some individuals had fallen victim to fraud perpetrated by land speculators and other unscrupulous elements who exploited the ongoing development in the area to deceive unsuspecting buyers.

According to him, prospective land buyers must always verify the status of any land by consulting the Ministry of Lands and Surveys, the Town Planning Office, and other relevant authorities before making any purchase, particularly in high-profile development zones such as the Asaba Waterfront City.

“That is why we are here today to mark illegal structures and fences for demolition. Occupants are not entitled to statutory notices because this is fully gazetted government land,” he said.

Ebonka advised affected persons to immediately seek refunds from those who sold the land to them illegally and to remove any structures or encumbrances they had placed on the site.

“Government will not hesitate to act. All illegal structures will be demolished, and those responsible will bear the full cost of the demolition,” he warned.

He added that it was in the best interest of those involved to salvage what they could, noting that bulldozers would soon move in to clear all illegal developments on the land.

The Special Project Director disclosed that the ongoing excavation works were preparatory activities for proper land reclamation.

He identified North China Construction Company and Falklands Nigeria Limited as the two major developers currently operating in the area.

“North China Construction Company controls a little over 300 hectares and is developing the Waterfront City, while Falklands holds the larger portion, which will be developed as Niger City. These are two major cities that will emerge here in the near future,” he said.

Expressing confidence in the technical capacity and readiness of the developers, Ebonka said substantial portions of the land would be reclaimed within the next two to three months.

“In the coming weeks, there will be visible and extensive reclamation works. This marks the second phase of the project. The first phase involved the construction of access roads, payment of compensation, and securing all statutory approvals,” he explained.

He stated that the state government, under the leadership of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, had fully met its obligations under the project, having secured all approvals and released the necessary funds in good time.

“The responsibility now lies with the developers to carry out their obligations, including land reclamation, construction of the bond wall, provision of access roads, and delivery of other world-class infrastructure as stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding,” he added.

Barr. Ebonka described the Asaba Waterfront City as a fully integrated, self-sustaining, state-of-the-art city, comprising residential zones, an ICT hub, an economic and commercial hub, as well as hospitality and leisure facilities.

On the project timeline, Ebonka expressed optimism that, based on the current pace of work, the Asaba Waterfront City would be substantially delivered within the next three years.
