  • There’s now political will to fix National Stadium — Dare

There is now a departure from the previous neglect and lack of political will to fix the abandoned National Stadium all over the country, the Minister of Youths and Sports, Sunday Dare, said on Saturday, noting that the facilities would now enjoy political will.

The minister, who paid a one-day working visit to the National Stadium, Lagos, said that the stadium’s reinstatement was among his three point agenda as a minister.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister in the company of the Chairman, Nigeria Women League, Aisha Falode and other directors in the ministry of sports visited the stadium that has suffered neglect for over 16 years.

Dare said that the ministry’s agenda for sports development in Nigeria would be in three key areas which includes, facilities maintenance, upgrade and management.

“I am on a working visit to the National Stadium, Lagos today, but I have visited MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna and Daura Township Stadium.

“I visited Daura Township Stadium because there is also a plan for grassroots development of sports in our agenda.

“For us in the Youth Ministry, we will focus, on three major things which includes, facility maintenance, upgrade and management.

“What I have seen here is because we have not done 100 per cent management and upgrade of the stadium over the years,” he said.

Dare said that his working visit to the stadium was not for ritual sake, but to have an holistic assessment of the stadium with a strong political will to fix it.

“Let me say that my coming here is not for ritual sake, I came with a renewed instruction from the President Muhammadu Buhari who gave the assignment.

“There is political will on the part of the president this time to make sure that national monuments like this are not neglected.

“For this, we will find out an option at which we can restore back to glory Nigeria as a football nation.

“We should have up to 10 or 12 international standard stadium and pitches up top FIFA standard. So, there is a renewed political will to restore the stadium,” he said.

Dare disclosed that a Public Private Partnership (PPP) to bring back the stadium would not be jettisoned, adding that holistic assessment would be given to the facilities.

“A process is in place before I came in as minister and I cannot truncate that. The president has made a decision on the facility.

“My work is to inspect and provide the right advice from a professional standpoint. I will be working in conjunction with experts form the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the youth ministry.

“I hope that the arrangement with the Federal Government and Lagos state Government will come and we are also looking at Public Private Partnership (PPP) for a model to evolve and put the facility back.

“As I have said before I will not be only the Minister of Football, but sports. Nigeria has excelled in many sports; we have about 12 sports which we have competitive edge,” he said. (NAN)

  • ICPC seals Pinnick’s, Dikko’s homes

The Abuja residence of Shehu Dikko, the second vice-president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has been sealed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Also, ICPC sealed the Parkview residence of the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick hours after sealing the Abuja residence of the federation’s Vice President, Shehu Dikko.

The commission launched an investigation into the NFF’s financial activities following allegations of corruption.

Following the order of forfeiture of the property by a Federal High Court on Friday, according to The Cable, the ICPC sealed Dikko’s No. 1 River Benue, Maitama residence.

This is following an order of forfeiture of the property by a federal high court, on Friday. The ICPC sealed Dikko’s No. 1 River Benue, Maitama residence. The house was sealed yesterday morning by the commission over a fresh corruption investigation on the federation.

According to the ICPC, the investigation is to uncover financial malpractices in the football association, allegedly involving Dikko and other executives.

Rasheedat Okoduwa, ICPC spokesperson, told TheCable that Dikko’s property was sealed following fresh corruption charges against him and some other executives of the NFF.

“It is true that ICPC sealed Shehu Dikko’s Maitama residence this morning,” she said. “He is being investigated with others over fresh corruption charges. It has nothing to do with the cases of SPIP or EFCC.”

The NFF has been on the watch-list of the anti-corruption agencies. The federation is also currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Special Presidential Investigation Panel on Recovery of Public Property (SPIP).

The executives of the federation have been accused of diverting funds meant for the association.

  • APC to Atiku: Scammers deceived you on server

Mustapha Salihu, claimed on Friday that the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, was deceived by con men into believing that there was an INEC server used to transmit the results of the election.

According to Salihu, it is clear that there was no such server recognised by law anywhere and so could not have been used for the election.

He spoke to reporters in Abuja at the end of a meeting of stakeholders of the party from Adamawa State.

He argued that those who told the former Vice President of the existence of a server succeeded in scamming him, stressing that even though his lawyers did a good job trying to present his case, they failed to establish a prima facie case.

“Some people robbed them (PDP), took their money, telling them there was INEC server somewhere when that was not true,” he said.

“Even though their lawyers did a good job trying to present their case, it was dismissed because there was no substance.”

Salihu described the Presidential Election Petition tribunal’s verdict on Atiku’s suit as a victory for Nigeria and the Nigerian people and not for APC alone.

He added: “We have now done away with the distractions and this government is going to deliver the dividends of democracy and the next level is assured.

The outcome of the tribunal is something that was expected.

“All the grounds canvassed by the opposition are frivolous because you cannot say that an army general who served as a commanding officer, Head of State, Minister and President of Federal Republic of Nigeria for four years does not have credentials.”

  • Jonathan’s absence delays decision on PDP’s running mate

The absence of former President Goodluck Jonathan has put on hold a proposed stakeholders’ meeting by the Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, to review the choice of running mate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the November 16 governorship election in the state.

There were outcries in the state chapter of the PDP following attempts by few party leaders to foist Senator Lawrence Ewrujakpor, who hails from Dickson’s Sagbama Local Government Area, on the party as a running mate to the governorship candidate, Senator Douye Diri.

But Dickson, who listened to stiff opposition against Ewrujakpor, called for a meeting of top and critical stakeholders of the party to review the controversial choice of Ewrujakpor within the time frame given by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for substitution of candidates.

It was, however, gathered that no date had been selected for the meeting because Dickson and other party leaders were waiting for the arrival of Jonathan who was said to have travelled outside the country for an engagement.

It was learnt that Jonathan’s opinion would be sought on the issue, which was threatening the existence of the PDP and its chances at the forthcoming governorship poll.

A PDP stalwart, who spoke in confidence, said following widespread argument against conceding the running mate slot to Dickson’s West Senatorial District comprising Sagbama and Ekeremor, the position would be zoned to the East, Jonathan’s district comprising Nembe, Brass and Ogbia.

He said in view of the current political realities arising from the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give Nembe its running mate slot, most of the PDP leaders were making a strong case that the position should be given to Ogbia as a mark of honour to Jonathan and to counter the raging influence of APC in the East.

The PDP chieftain said if the meeting eventually holds, Jonathan and Dickson will be expected to nominate their preferred persons in Ogbia for the running mate position while the governorship candidate, Diri, will select from the nominees of the two leaders.

He said: “But the dilemma here is that Jonathan has a father figure in his Ogbia Local Government Area and would not want to be seen as favouring one son above the other.

“Jonathan will not dabble into that kind of politics of selection. He will simply ask the governor to choose anybody in his team so long the person is from Ogbia.

“We know that most of the people from Ogbia angling for the position lack electoral value and have shown disloyalty to the governor.

“Most of them were involved in anti-party activities and could not deliver their wards in the last general elections. But they are the ones desperate to become running mates.

“There are, however, persons in the restoration team from Ogbia with the capacity to drive votes and command the respect of the younger ones.

“People, especially youths from across the state like these ones who have shown loyalty to restoration ideals. We expect the governor to pick a running from this pack”.

Another source close to Jonathan said the former President was still busy with his international assignment and might not be available for the meeting.

“But he has made his feelings on the matter known. He is of the view that he will support anybody from Ogbia the governor and the party consider for running mate to the candidate,” the source said.

A former Chairperson of Brass, Mrs. Hellen Bob, said in a statement that the stakeholders’ meeting was unnecessary since the governor had the knife and the yam.

She said: “For me there is no need calling stakeholders to hear governor’s briefing as usual because they may not be given opportunity to speak out their minds. Even if they do, their opinions will never count because of our past experiences.

“We all recalled how three aspirants emerged from him to speak for a Restoration political family and the entire PDP. Not even the party leadership could call a meeting to discuss the way forward but strongly supported the governor to ensure one of them won the PDP ticket while others were disgraced.

“He may be the last PDP governor if he doesn’t fix all these disheartening issues that have clouded our dear PDP. The governor is a very intelligent and experienced personality that knows what best to do at the right time.

“He needs not any stakeholders meeting to fix the party back to the way it used to win general elections. Since 2015 that the model of choosing who bears the PDP flags in state House of Assembly,  House of Reps and Senate seats changed to imposition of candidates due to favoritism, family and friends, we have lost more seats than ever.

“With all due respect my boss, the truth is bitter but I have to state it here clearly that this imposition of candidates is an unpopular and old school kind of party primary model that is why we lost those seats to the APC.

“Frankly speaking, even those who are close with you are only there to ensure their salaries read, hence will never tell you the truth. Please take a good decision yourself as you have always done to fix all the collapsing walls of the party as no stakeholders have any role to play at this point”.

But some party stakeholders commended the decision of Dickson to review the party’s choice of running mate, saying it was a step in the right direction.

Chairman of Bayelsa East Forum for Justice (BEFJ), Monday Eribo, said the governor by deciding to convene the meeting, had again proved that he was a leader that listened to genuine complaints.

He said for listening to the loud outcry against the intended running mate, Dickson endeared himself to the heart of loyal members of the party, who were ready to stand with him till the end of his tenure.

Eribo urged the leaders and stakeholders invited for the meeting to look at the issue of running mate dispassionately and ensure that it was zoned to the East.

Eribo, a former three-time Commissioner in the State Local Government Service Commission, appealed to the stakeholders to ensure the selection of a competent person from the East before the expiration of the INEC deadline.

He said: “What the candidate of the PDP for the November 16 governorship election, Senator Douye Diri needs is someone who enjoys the support of not only Ogbia people but people across the state, and it must be someone who is very committed to the Restoration agenda.

“Picking someone from the East, particularly Ogbia will be a mark of honour and respect to former President Goodluck Jonathan and will balance the political equation in the state.

“We thank individuals and groups who came out to voice their concerns over the choice of Senator Lawrence Ehrudjakpor, saying history will never forget them, as they spoke up when it mattered most.”

  • Kogi governorship election: Melaye declines appointment as PDP campaign DG

Senator Dino Melaye has turned down his appointment by the Kogi State campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the November 16 governorship poll.

Stakeholders in the state’s chapter had during a visit to the Abuja secretariat of the party yesterday touted Melaye as the Director General of the party’s campaign council.

But in a swift reaction, the senator, who did not accompany the stakeholders on the visit, said in a tweet and on his Facebook page declined the appointment.

He wrote: “Let me state categorically that I have turned down the position of Director General of the PDP Kogi State governorship campaign council.

“I wish the PDP all the best. When truth is a casualty, there is chaos.”

Melaye had contested and lost the party’s September 3 primary election and had subsequently filed an appeal to the leadership of the party complaining that most of the ballot boxes containing his delegates’ vote were snatched when armed thugs invaded the venue of the exercise.

But the leadership of the party had insisted that the number of votes in the said missing ballot boxes was not enough to invalidate the victory of the winner of the primaries, Mr Musa Wada, who scored over 700 votes against Melaye’s 70.

Majority of the 12 aspirants that contested the primaries with Wada however pledged to work for the unity and success of the PDP in the election.

Speaking on behalf of other aspirants, Muhammed Shuaibu Tettes, said the aspirants accepted the outcome of the primary election in good faith.

Tettes said: “As members of the Kogi PDP 2019 G-12, the urgent need for intra-party cohesion and unity of purpose at this moment is recognised.

“It is for this reason that the candidacy of Engr. Musa Wada is considered worthy of undivided support as the task to rebuild Kogi starts in earnest.

“Considering the reconciliation efforts of Engr. Musa Wada and his preparedness to actively partner with other aspirants that lost the ticket, we have accepted him as a partner in progress in the liberation struggle and also accept to work with him in the overall interest of the PDP and Kogi State.”

Some of the party chieftains that were at the secretariat in solidarity with the candidate were a former governor of the state, Capt. Idris Wada, who lost the ticket to his younger brother.

Also at the party secretariat were Emmanuel Omebije, Princess Grace Iyeh Adejoh, Dr. Joseph Ameh Erico, Alhaji Kabiru Haruna, Adebayo Averehi and Aminu Abubakar Sulaiman.
