  • Csos caution govt against increase of vat to 7.2%

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), under the auspices of The Tax Justice and Governance Platform, (TJGP) have called on the federal government to concentrate more efforts on ensuring the proper collection of appropriate taxes than increasing the Valued Added Tax.

The group, in a statement, urged the federal government to concentrate on chasing taxes “from multinationals and large corporations which have continued to benefit from undeserved tax incentives and had for years engaged in tax avoidance practices.”

They also called on the government and relevant institutions “to develop strategies to curb the tax avoidance practices of big businesses in the country and pay attention to challenges of the illicit financial flow that has continued to undermine the economy.”

The group said: “We have followed with keen interest, the trend around the Federal Government’s effort to improve revenue mobilization to fund development in Nigeria. There has been diverse views from different interest parties on which measures will be more strategic and sustainable. Finally, the Minister of Finance announced an increase in the VAT rate at the last Federal Executive Council meeting held on the 11th of September 2019 after several denials of the possibility of an increase in the VAT in Nigeria”.

The body of CSOs advocated that government should “design and implement policies and programmes that enhance the welfare of the poor and protect disadvantaged groups that constitute much of the Nigerian population and address issues of inequality.”

According to the group, government should “pay serious attention to widening the tax net rather than increasing the rate which will only place more burden on the few that comply already and still exempt the majority that do not pay taxes.”

The group further said:”Before increasing the VAT, the government should consider: Who bears the burden of the tax increment? What main drivers could inform and/or justify the decision for a VAT increment? What are the real issues around VAT: remittance (collection) or rate? How well has the little been used and what are the assurances that an increase would alleviate economic conditions? What systematic measures have been taken to ensure tax compliance? Are there no other options available to the government to mobilize revenue?”

The group is demanding that the federal government should “provide additional information and details on the proposed measures for the purposes of public debate and multi-stakeholder input.”

“We want empirical projections and evidence based expected outputs that indicate that the tax yield from some of the measures would outweigh any disadvantage and potential negative impact and that the majority of Nigerians will be the ultimate beneficiaries of the proposed measures,” he said.

The group also wants the government “to establish the beneficial ownership register in Nigeria as a measure to know people’s real worth and what they are liable to pay as tax and fully implement the BVN policy as a measure of tracking peoples’ tax liabilities, especially the wealthy individuals who have not been paying tax.”

  • VP to represent Nigeria at Mugabe’s state funeral

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo  will be representing Nigeria  at the state funeral for former President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe in Harare on Saturday.

Osinbajo, according to his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, will be joining other African leaders and heads of state expected on the occasion scheduled for the country’s National Stadium in Harare.

Heads of state expected to attend the funeral include President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa and President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya.

Mugabe, who was Zimbabwean Prime Minister and later President for 37 years altogether, up until 2017, died last week at the age of 95 in a Singaporean hospital.

The Vice President, who would be accompanied on the trip by senior government officials, left for Harare yesterday afternoon and is expected back in Nigeria later today.

  • Media remains govt’s partner despite negative reports, says Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has said the media remains a partner of government in educating, informing and entertaining Nigerians , despite negative reports about the Muhammmadu Buhari administration.

He spoke in Abuja on Thursday during a dinner for heads of media organizations across the country to appreciate them for their roles in sustaining democracy in the last four years.

He tasked journalists  to do all within their powers to halt the spread of fake news before it consumes the nation.

“I want to say how very thankful I am for all support  we get every day from the press and to say that for good and for ill at all times, whether you report nicely or not so nicely, you will always be friends and partners,” he said.

On the alleged negativity of the social media,he cited  an old video that went viral recently , where people purported to be South Africa based Nigerians were seen jumping from a burning high-rise building, running from xenophobic attacks.

He said: “I thought somebody in the media, may be radio, may be TV, could seize the initiative and correct the fake news. I think that we as media people, all of us are now media people on social media, print, TV, must begin to do something serious about fake news before it consumes us all.”

He was similarly surprised that the traditional media could not see through the lies being peddled  on social media about the president’s  certificate.

“Because nobody bothered to find out or didn’t want to find out, the public believed a lie for so long ,” Osinbajo said.

“So, with the anonymity of the social media, every day the problems of a free press are becoming more and more complex and even more dangerous.”

In a goodwill message, Senate President Ahmed Lawan, who was represented  by Senate Leader,  Yahaya Abdullahi, thanked the media for always supporting all arms of government,  and especially  their good job during the country’s general election and the election of principal officers of the 9th National Assembly.

Speaking earlier, Secretary to Government of the Federation, (SGF) Boss Mustapha, thanked the Nigerian media for its massive support.

He noted that the Buhari’s administration runs a very accountable and transparent government, thus laying the foundation for a sound economy.

His words:”We run a government that is accountable to the public by all standards. The Buhari administration has laid a solid foundation for Nigeria’s economic development through massive investments in agriculture, power, transportation infrastructure and manufacturing.

“We believe that tangible investments in these priority areas will drive the nation’s economic diversification programmes, curb inflation and shore up foreign reserves.”

Mustapha also highlighted the successes recorded by the administration in the fight against terrorism and corruption, but solicited more support from the media, as he assured them of the needed freedom to operate in any part of the country.

He said: “The anti-corruption fight is upbeat. The control measures to tackle leakages  in public resources have saved us billions of naira, while those who stole our common patrimony are being made to return what they illegally acquired for themselves and their cronies through the legal process.

  • Bayelsa guber: I’m not a stooge — PDP candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the November 16 gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, on Friday said the insinuation that he is a stooge of the outgoing governor, Seriake Dickson, is totally false.

The governorship hopeful also underscored the need for peace in the rank of the 20 PDP aspirants he defeated to emerge the party’s flag bearer for the election.

Diri, who spoke in Abuja, insisted that the insinuation that he would be a stooge to cover up for the incumbent governor of state does not add up.

He said: “When people say you will be a stooge to cover up, I can tell you that there is practically nothing to cover up.

“The resources that came to the state were used for the development of the state.

“With what I saw and I participated in allocating to the ministries, departments and agencies in the state, there is nothing to cover up for anybody.

”We sit together with the governor to allocate what comes to the state. There is nothing to cover up.”

He added that the question of being a stooge does not arise because he had always been a man of his own.

The PDP candidate noted that he would make education and further growth of the economy of the state the cornerstone of his administration if elected.

Diri said that he would continue with education which Dickson made one of the policy thrust of his administration.

He said: “If we are among the first five in education in the country, we will push to ensure that Bayelsa State become the first or second best state in education in the country.”

He noted that he would build on the solid economic foundation laid by the outgoing administration in the state.

On how he emerged the PDP candidate, Diri said that he was not really the winner but the party.

He appealed to 20 other aspirants who lost the primary election to join hands with him to deliver the state to the PDP.

He said: “No matter how bitter anybody may be, we should team up and join hands together to work in the interest of the PDP and our state.”

The governorship candidate, who recognised that a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Ndutimi Alaibe, “is a factor in the state,” noted that they were reaching out to all stakeholders to calm frayed nerves.

He said: “We are calling them; we are moving to them; we are also using their friends and brothers to appeal to them for us to work together. We are not there yet, but I believe we will consolidate.”

He said that many of those who lost the primary election have made it clear that they would not go to another party.

“We are not there yet. We need to get the 20 of them for us to work together to win the election,” he said.

Talking specifically about Alaibe, he said: “I worked with him for many years. Alaibe and I are from the same local government area. We worked together. I agree with you that he is a factor.

“Everybody in the race was there to win. We are talking. We are engaging our brothers at home for us to work together.”

Diri noted that “if we have a free and fair election, the APC will not win a counsellorship election in Bayelsa State because the APC is no where in the state.”

On his relationship with former President Goodluck Jonathan, he said that anybody could claim that the former president is with him.

For him, it is only at the point of voting that you know who is where.

To those who describe him as an underdog, he noted that

  • Tribunal victory: Buhari’s supporter battles for life after multiple stabs by angry neighbour

A supporter of President Muhammad Buhari and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Elvis Omoiri, is battling for his life after an angry neighbour allegedly stabbed him multiple times with a broken bottle in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Nation gathered that Omoiri was attacked after an argument ensued between him and his neighbour identified as Best Uduophori, over the President’s tribunal victory on Wednesday.

According to reports, his attacker, believed to be a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member, runs a bar around the Okoloba area of Effurun and is currently at large.

The victim was said to be struggling to survive at an undisclosed hospital over injuries he sustained on his neck, head and other body parts.

An APC supporter in the state, MC Paul, confirmed the incident in a social media post yesterday.

He described the attack as inhumane and unwarranted.

Paul said: “I have just received report of an attempted murder of one Elvis Omoiri by a neighbour, Best Uduophori, who runs a beer parlor in Okoloba, Effurun, Uvwie LGA, Delta State, over a mere political argument.

“What are we turning politics into in this country? You want to kill someone over Buhari and Atiku tribunal matter? This is animalistic!

“You break a bottle and stab a fellow countryman almost to the point of death over APC and PDP matter? So, someone doesn’t have right to personal opinion again in Nigeria?

“Just few days ago, we were all against South Africans for Xenophobic attacks on Nigerians. Today, it is a Nigerian that seems not to value the life of a fellow Nigerian. This is very disgusting, cruel, callous, mean and most condemnable.”

He however called on the Nigeria Police to thoroughly investigate the matter and see through to the prosecution of the attacker, further disclosing the Warri Area Command has been briefed.

“I learnt the matter has been reported to the Area Commander in Warri and that the Police are on the lookout for the guy, who is said to be at large at the moment.

“The Nigerian Police Force should do everything in its power to arrest the accused at once and properly investigate this matter. Justice needs to be served and fast.

“Until we get serious by taking strict measures against crimes like this, Nigeria will not be safe for anyone. The perpetrator of this heinous attack should be punished accordingly.”

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Adeyinka Adeleke, who expressed shock at the development, could not confirm the report, as he said he had not been briefed of the incident.

At the time of filing this report, he was yet to call back as he promised.

  • Judgment: How FEC meeting saved me from trauma, by Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday recalled the anxious moment he went through while the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal delivered judgment in the petition filed against him by the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), whose victory in the February election was affirmed by the tribunal on Wednesday, said the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held the same day was the elixir that saved him saved him from trauma.

The President spoke at the Presidential Villa, Abuja while receiving governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had gone to congratulate him on his victory.

He said: “On this judgment, again it was a fabulous coincidence that it came almost the same time the first Federal Executive Council meeting of this government was taking place.

“It lasted about the same time with the judgment.

“I thank God for that, because I think I would have gone into trauma or something. So, I was busy trying to concentrate on the memo.

“The first memo was on the budget and it took more than five hours. So, while you were doing your thing for nine hours, we were doing ours for about seven hours here.

“It is a very interesting coincidence and I thank God for it because I would have been in trauma or something of that sort.”

He thanked the National Chairman of the party, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and the governors for “sharing the glory with us.”

He said:  “We are here to celebrate your victory and that of our party at the tribunal. I say big congrats to you.

“We don’t know how it happened, but it was televised live for Nigerians to see for transparency.

“It silenced all doubts. We never doubted your positions and now the law has affirmed it too.

“It was noteworthy that you were not even distracted as you chaired the FEC on the day of judgment.”

He commended Buhari’s social investments programmes on rail, infrastructure all taking place under his administration.

Also speaking, the party chair, Adams Oshiomhole, said: “We never had doubts that you won your votes. All the issues raised by our opponents were trashed out one after the other by the Justices that sat on the panel.

“But of particular interest to us, Mr. President, as members of the progressive family is that we are all aware that the only asset Mr. President has invested and continues to invest in your political journey and your political project is your integrity.”

He pointed out that the PDP has no one in its fold that has the image and integrity of President Buhari.
