  • Enjoy rest in marriage (4)

So far, we have been able to examine the following topics: The Place of Rest; Rest in the time of Unrest and Relaxing at Home. Today, we shall be exploring the topic: ‘Maximizing Happiness in your Home’

I want us to consider how to get the best of times in our families. The Bible says: The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear? (Proverbs 18:14).It is joy on the inside that brings out the best in a man. Happiness in your home will bring out the best in your wife, husband and children. A sorrowful heart is dangerous. Nothing good comes the way of the dejected. God’s Word says: A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones (Proverbs 17:22).

When there is no happiness in a home, the family members are prone to all sorts of sicknesses and diseases. Man, which do you choose? To stay happy and make every member of your family happy, thereby staying away from hospital bills, or to continue spending your money and resources on drugs and medical bills. Wisdom is profitable to direct, the wise man said. I’ll rather choose to stay happy and be drug-free with my family members.

What is Happiness? It is a state of enjoyment, showing satisfaction or joy. It is also marked by pleasure. When you are happy, in most cases, your disposition is characterised by laughter which is a feeling of triumphant or exultant sense of well-being. . When you are genuinely happy, no one needs ask you. You just flow in it, and it shows.

Now, God has declared this year as our own year of turning point. Therefore, God expects a lot of happiness in and around us and our homes this year. We shall not disappoint Him.

What does it take to be Happy?

The Psalmist says: …Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee (Psalm 128:1-2).Also, Proverbs 28:14 says: Happy is the man that feareth alway: but he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief:

We can see from the above two scriptures that Happiness comes by fearing God, reverencing His voice via His Word, obeying His instructions and doing what He commands to do. To maximize Happiness in our homes, therefore, God is telling us to consider these:

    1. Appreciate the good in your spouse and family members, and then the bad will depreciate – Whatever good thing and strong point you can see in the life of your spouse, let it be a source of happiness and inspiration to you. Praise God for this aspect of his/her life, and then every other area where he/she does not measure up to will begin to disappear in your eyes.
    2. Celebrate your spouse – Remember that other people are secretly wishing this same man or woman is their husband or wife. Keep that which you have jealously. Magnify your spouse in the face of the devil.
    3. Sow joy – Remember that you only reap what you sow. If you sow excitement into the atmosphere in your home, you will reap joyful family members. You will be happy yourself and your home shall be full of joy.
    4. Adapt to your spouse – Like what your spouse likes. Know his tastes and flow along with him/her. You will feel free and flow.
    5. Maintain body contact always – This does not necessarily mean sex. Hug each other. Give little kisses. Give your spouse pat of encouragement. Especially in public, don’t be ashamed to hold your spouse. Be free, not of necessity, but as a life style.
    6. Create God (not good) climate around your home – A God climate will eventually produce good climate. Fill your home with Christian music, Christian books, Inspirational materials, Posters, etc. Let everything around your home smell God.
    7. Organise Feasts – Learn to celebrate important days and events. Form the habit of remembering birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, etc. Make big events out of ordinary days. Use these occasions to get excited and rejoice with your family members. You don’t have to call people. Gather your wife and children and just celebrate with whatever thing you have.
    8. Be one – Do things with your spouse. Pray together and do things in common. Let your children see oneness in you. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Communicate and know your spouse to be able to vouch for him/her when not there. It makes you happy.
    9. Give no place to the spirit of unforgiveness – If you don’t forgive, you will not be forgiven. If you don’t make others happy, you will not be happy yourself. If your wife or husband offends or goes wrong somehow, correct immediately in love, and forgive. Also forget. You’ll be happy.
    10. Be Contented – Contentment brings satisfaction. If you are not contented, you cannot be happy. Be satisfied with your husband, wife, children, finances, your life and environment. Praise God, and you’ll be happy.

Finally, friends, the Word says: If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them (John 13:17). God needed a garden in Genesis, and, He planted one. If you want happiness, you must create it. Nothing works until you work it. You cannot be happy without having hope. Nothing destroys laughter than hopelessness. Never lose hope for a moment. Set yourself to doing these things and your laughter shall know no end.

Throughout this year, slap the face of the devil with your laughter. Be happy on the inside and it shall continually show on the outside. Your health shall spring forth and every member of your family shall enjoy the divine presence of God. Heaven is full of joy, and God dwells in the midst of praise. Make your home and life a habitation for the Almighty.

Do you want to maximize happiness in your home? The first step is to be born again. If you are not yet born again and you desire to do so right now, please pray this prayer with faith in your heart: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and personal Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin and satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom.

Congratulations! If you prayed this simple prayer of faith with me, you are now born again and a child of God. He loves you and will never leave you. Read your Bible daily, obey God’s Word and seek Christian fellowship (John 14:21).

  • Air Peace: Soaring in spite of huge odds

NIGERIA’S leading carrier, Air Peace, appears fully poised to etch the nation’s name in the map of the very competitive global aviation market. After months of painstaking planning and equipment testing, Air Peace will on Friday, July 5, 2019 commence scheduled flight operations to Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. With the commencement of operations on this route, Air Peace would be offering travelers from Nigeria the rare opportunity of connecting 23 other destinations from the United Arab Emirates at a very pocket-friendly cost. The destinations that could easily be connected from Sharjah international airport include: Riyadh, Medina, Jeddah, Beirut, Delhi, Colombo, Dhaka, Mumbai, Kathmandu, Moscow and several others.

Air Peace currently operates scheduled regional flights to Accra (Ghana), Banjul (Gambia), Freetown (Sierra Leone), Dakar (Senegal) and Monrovia (Liberia)

For its long haul flights, Air Peace has confirmed that it will be deploying its B777 wide body aircraft. The airline recently acquired four B777 aircraft and has since taken delivery of three of them. In fact, local travelers in Nigeria recently had a foretaste of the incredibly comfortable B777 jets when the airline briefly deployed them to a few local routes on test-run. The management of Air Peace has also announced that Dubai, Johannesburg, London, Houston, Guangzhou and Mumbai will join the airline’s international route network soon after the launch of the Sharjah service.

Barrister Allen Onyema, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace asserts that the airline’s international services would give Nigeria and West Africa a sense of pride in the global aviation industry.  “Just this year, we launched a number of domestic and regional routes under our no-city-left-behind project on the platform of our subsidiary, Air Peace Hopper. We also made history as the first domestic airline to acquire and register the Boeing 777 aircraft in Nigeria. We also successfully renewed our International Air Transport Association Operational Safety Audit certificate and Air Operator Certificate after a very rigorous process. We also diversified the aircraft in our fleet with the inclusion of six 50-seater Embraer 145 jets,” Onyema disclosed.

But how prepared is Air Peace to take on the humungous task of operating international long haul flights? While admitting that he is aware that the challenges would be daunting, Allen Onyema however insists that Air Peace is very prepared to ride the storm.

“Before you go into any business, you need to study the business and the environment. You have to know the airline business, for example, is a risky one. What are the factors that have made many airlines in Nigeria to fall by the way side? You really need to know where you are coming from; where the other airlines are coming from and what has been responsible for their failure. All these we did before we decided on the route to take. We knew that most of the problems with Nigerian airlines in the past involved the lack of capacity, and not having enough planes to meet the demand of the teeming flying population. Again, you don’t have any Nigerian airline succeeding on the international scene. So, from the outset, we started with seven aircraft and we have never stopped buying aircraft. At every point in time, we know that when we increase our capacity, it would make us to compete favourably,” the Air Peace Chairman enthused.

Mr. Onyema revealed that Air Peace draws strength from the very strong support it continues to receive from its bank.  “Our bank, Fidelity Bank, has been very supportive, and it is because we pay back our loans. That has helped us to increase our fleet to satisfy the flying public and compete favourably. We have not stopped buying planes.” He said the airline’s driving force is to disprove the notion that Nigeria is a failure in the global airline industry. “We have decided to make the difference. We want to prove that we are different and that we are a very resilient people in Nigeria. We have very resourceful people. They have not been given that opportunity to rise; we are also contending with international aviation politics that is trying to bring Nigerian airlines down. So, we decided to do things differently, both in the way we run our affairs and in the way we expand. We decided to acquire the single-aisle planes for our domestic operations and we have acquired the wide-body planes for our international long haul flights,” Onyema added.

Aviation experts in the country are however piqued that in spite of the best efforts of Air Peace, the airline appears to be contending with very toxic local politics. All over the world, national governments protect and guard jealously, the brands of their leading carriers. In Nigeria however, the reverse seems to be the case, especially regarding Air Peace. In fact, so extreme are some of the measures against Air Peace by organs of government that operators in the sensitive sector are beginning to wonder if there is an organized conspiracy to halt the growth of this airline that is currently providing gainful employment for thousands of Nigerians.

Series of potentially injurious measures have severally been meted out to Air Peace by regulatory authorities but a few of such actions in recent times clearly stand out and are deservedly being widely condemned by industry experts. One in question is a recent press statement by Nigeria’s Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB), which curiously accused Air Peace of concealing serious incidents that involved two of its aircraft between December 2018 and May 2019, thereby preventing it from carrying out thorough investigations on them in order to prevent reoccurrence.

The statement issued by the General Manager, Public Affairs of AIB, Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, alleged that in December 14, 2018, a Boeing 737-300 belonging to Air Peace airline, with registration marks 5N-BUO, enroute Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu from Lagos was involved in a serious incident at about 10:44hrs. Oketunji explained that the airline got the information through the social media, while it was not notified of the occurrence until later in the evening. Oketunbi emphasized that its investigators met the aircraft at the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) apron in Lagos where it was parked with the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) affected, thereby posing an undesirable difficulty in the bureau’s bid to successfully discharge its statutory mandate of investigating accidents and serious incidents. The AIB statement further alleged that on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, a serious incident involving a Boeing 737-300 aircraft with registration Marks 5N-BUK, belonging to Air Peace Limited was also concealed from it.

The management of Air Peace as well as seasoned operators in the nation’s aviation industry that are familiar with the incidents, have since fundamentally disagreed with AIB’s claims that the two occurrences it cited in the press statement were “very serious” warranting such a public opprobrium. They also affirmed that it is not true, as claimed by the AIB, that the two incidents were not reported to the appropriate authorities as at when due.

On its part, the management of Air Peace gave detailed explanations on the two incidents referred to by the AIB. The airline said that on the night of May 15, 2019, an Air Peace Boeing 737-300 aircraft with registration number 5N-BUK made a hard landing in Lagos on account of sudden change in weather at the point of touch down. “However, the AIB grossly misrepresented the facts when it alluded that the airline only reported the incident, after the Bureau’s team visited its corporate headquarters in Lagos on June 6, 2019, which was about three weeks after the incident. Contrary to the press statement issued by the AIB, Air Peace duly notified the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) of the incident on May 16, 2019, before it followed up with a written communication and subsequently filed a Mandatory Occurrence Report (MOR) on May 17, 2019, with reference number APL/QM/279/19,” Air Peace management disclosed in a rebuttal.

It has since been confirmed that the said MOR filed by the airline was received and signed for by the NCAA on the same date. The airline complied with the statutory time-line for the filing of MOR, credible aviation sources corroborated.

The management of Air Peace decried this “deliberate misrepresentation of facts” by the AIB, and questioned the motive behind the press statement. “Was the press statement intended to scare the flying public against an airline that has consistently demonstrated zero tolerance for unsafe practices?” it queried.

The second incident referred to by the AIB was a revisit of an incident, which occurred on December 14, 2018, in an Air Peace aircraft en route Enugu Airport, during which oxygen masks were automatically deployed as a result of change in cabin pressure. The airline has since explained that matters related to masks dropping during flight is not peculiar to Air Peace, but common to airlines the world over.

However, Engineer Angus Ifeanyi Ozoka, a former Director-General of AIB who also once served as the Rector of Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, insists that the AIB’s press statement on Air Peace is unprecedented, unheard of in the industry and far from being altruistic. Ozoka argues, in a statement he issued on the matter recently, that AIB unduly targeted Air Peace and as a result did more harm than good to the nation’s fledgling aviation sector. He posits as follows: “After carefully reading AIB’s statement and as a concerned Nigerian, I have the following observations and comments on the matter: The damage assessment by AIB did not reveal that an accident or serious incident occurred as Hard Landing does not equate to an accident or serious incident. According to AIB, the nature of the damage suggests a high probability of an accident but it is difficult to see how such a conclusion can be reached when a thorough investigation was not carried out. Accident investigation is a pain-staking research work which follows a whole process involving the gathering and analysis of information, the drawing of conclusions after determination of cause(s), and making safety recommendations.”

Engr. Ozoka contends that given that the aircraft (B737-300 with registration 5N-BUK) is on ground awaiting hard landing inspection, that is, the aircraft is not operating at the moment, it is difficult to see what wrong Air Peace has committed. “If, according to the airline, a Mandatory Occurrence Report (MOR) was filed with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in writing on May 17, 2019 after a notification was made on May 16, 2019 i.e. within two days of the incidents; the NCAA should confirm whether this assertion is true, and if so confirmed, Air Peace has done no wrong,” Engr Ozoka insists.

With regards to Air Peace’s B737-300 aircraft with registration 5N-BUO, he argues that a malfunctioning Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) does not equate to an accident or serious incident and does not ‘make’ an accident.

“The assertion that Air Peace lacks full understanding of AIB’s statutory mandates, functions and procedures does not derive from any investigation with recommendations and such a conclusion can therefore not be reached. So far, no accidents or serious incidents were shown to have occurred in the publication by AIB. If, by chance, Air Peace, which is unarguably the leading airline in Nigeria lacks full understanding of AIB’s mandates etc, then it will be very safe to conclude that other airlines in the country equally lack this ‘full understanding’. The AIB should therefore take appropriate action to brief and educate all airlines in the country on such requirements for the wellbeing of the sector as AIB plays a critical role in aviation safety,” Ozoka further contends.

It is the view of Engr. Ozoka that the AIB may well have other reasons for the allegation of wrong doing against Air Peace but opines that the Bureau did not say so in the press statement. “In my very candid opinion, and deriving from the information by AIB in the press statement, neither ICAO nor NCAA rules and regulations were breached by Air Peace and it is not clear which aspects of AIB’s mandate and procedures, which should be in alignment with ICAO Annex 13, were breached. Most of the issues in the press statement are under the purview of the NCAA and it is believed that they are alive to their responsibility as the blame did not originate from them. Certainly, NCAA will not make such press release because the Agency understands the industry and does not need to shout to lead,” the former AIB Chief avers, adding that “we should be mindful of what we publish for the whole world to see so as not to be looked down upon and so that the competences of our professionals are not in doubt. In this way, no bias will be imputed. That press statement is not in consonance with ICAO Annex 13 and certainly, not in the best interest of Nigeria. This type of press release is unknown to aviation. A very professional AIB will be a source of pride, and a blessing to Nigeria and the world, and we must all support it towards this goal”

Sources close to Air Peace also readily recounts that when the airline’s third B777 aircraft was coming into the country, the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), for a while, prevented it from landing, claiming that there was no space in the airport terminal for the jet. “The Pilots had flown 15 hours from Dallas, USA, and for about 30 minutes they were hovering, they were prevented from landing in the international apron where officials of Air Peace and aviation correspondents for major media organisations in the country were waiting. It is unheard of; the belief was that the airport authorities would be in joyous mood to receive the wide-body jet. The Pilots were so disappointed in our system that they almost did not want to come down when they were eventually allowed to land,” the source said. Even then, when Air Peace decided to briefly showcase the B777 jets during the last Easter holiday season, the aviation authorities halted this even after over 600 tickets had been sold to enthusiastic travelers on the designated local routes.

It was similarly learnt that when Air Peace brought into the country its six new Embraer jets, the airline was prevented from flying or deploying the jets to designated routes for over six months. “They were giving all sorts of excuses but of course eventually, prominent officials of the Federal Government intervened and the requisite permissions were given. It is now a well known fact that Air Peace airline is unduly being targeted by some big interests in Nigeria’s aviation sector and this, of course is not good for the country,” another key operator in the nation’s aviation sector confided.

Interestingly, Barrister Allen Onyema, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace is not fazed. The chronic optimist is brimming with enthusiasm as he leads the very profound Air Peace team to perfect plans for the launch of the maiden long haul flight to Sharjah, on Friday 5th July 2019. “A critical point underpinning our international operations is our resolve to market Nigeria to the world. We are totally capable and determined to do that. We invite Nigerians to come and patronise their own. We know some forces are trying to run us down. Everything is set to give this country what it deserves on the international route, both in fare and the equipment (plane) we will be using. We are using the beautiful Boeing 777 planes which even the legacy carriers will be proud of. We are also conscious of the fact that an aggressive fleet expansion is needed to plug the holes and compete favourably on the international scene. And there is no looking back,” Onyema said.

  • Insurgency, pregnancies keep 441,126 Adamawa girls out of school

A research into girl-child education in Adamawa State has found that 441,126 school-age girls are out of school in the state for reasons that include insurgency, poverty, high rate of pregnancy or fear of it by parents, use of girls for hawking or domestic work, and apathy for the girl-child education.

The research report of a baseline study on a Community-led Collective Action for Girls Education (C-CAGE) in Adamawa State, presented in Yola, also indicated preference for Quranic education by families who view western education as being for Christians, and negative peer influence as other factors lowering rate of girl-child education in the state.

The C-CAGE research, which was commissioned by the African Centre for Leadership Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) and supported by the Malala Fund, elaborated that endemic poverty could rubbish even free education for a girl at the point of an external examination requiring a fee.

Many girls, the report stated, drop out of school near the exit point, at JSS 3 or SSS 3, when it comes to registering for the final year external examination because there is no money for the registration.

The concern that a girl may get pregnant and end schooling prematurely, a concern heightened by prevalent pregnancy among teenage girls and subsequent ‘fatherless’ babies in virtually every rural community, was also identified by the report as discouraging girl-child enrolment, just as actual pregnancies among school girls force them out of school.

And insurgency which forces many families, including their children out of their homes and schools and related fear of abduction by insurgents, also contribute to poor girl-child education profile of Adamawa State, according to the research report.

Other factors that the report identified include engagement of school-age girls for street hawking or domestic chores during school hours, calculation by some families that after all, a female child will end up as wife in the house of a man, as well as negative peer pressure that may discourage the educational pursuit of unwary teenage girls.

The report suggested free education which includes registration for external examinations, conscientising of communities to discourage early marriage and related indiscriminate sex that lead to unwanted pregnancies, prosecution of teacher or schoolmate who gets a girl pregnant, creation of counselling units to guide schoolgirls, among others, as ways to curtail girl-child education deficiency.

The baseline study on Community-led Collective Action for Girls Education (C-CAGE) was conducted in communities in Maiha Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa North Senatorial Zone, Numan in Adamawa South, and Song in the central part of the state, while statistics covering the entire state were obtained from relevant government ministries and agencies.

The acting Executive Director of the Centre LSD, Mr Monday Osasah, explained that the C-CAGE research was conceptualised to address the root causes of barriers to girl-child enrolment, retention and completion, and to recommend ways to change the narrative in Adamawa which belongs to the unenviable club of 10 northern states with the worst out-of-school children record.

  • We can see faintly now, say Kaduna eye patients blinded by injection

They approached the National Eye Centre, Kaduna for poor eye sight due to cataract and other ailments, but the 10 patients went blind for three weeks after taking an injection at the centre.

Now, nine of them can see faintly after series of corrective medical procedures.

The Nation had reported that the 10 patients went blind after they were given a Russian made Avastin injection on May 28. Four of the patients were affected in both eyes, while the rest lost one eye each.

The hospital management and the National Agency for Foods, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) made frantic efforts to unravel the cause of the blindness, which is yet to be disclosed.

However, the corrective surgeries carried out on the patients on Tuesday were successful as only one of the patients still cannot see at all.

When the hospital management invited journalists to interact with the patients, they said, their sights were gradually returning, though they were yet to return fully to what their situation was when they came to the hospital.

The management said the speedy recovery of the patients was miraculous, as they never expected it to be that fast.

One of the patients, who described their three weeks blindness as an accident, said she could now identify colours of dresses and notice moving objects unlike in previous weeks.

She, however, commended the hospital’s management for taking full responsibility for the incident, though she insisted that thorough investigation be carried out to unravel the mystery behind their blindness.

She said: “We need to know what led to the blindness. Could it be as a result of contamination of the injection? Is it from the supplier, hospital or manufacturer?

“We were told that the full recovery could take up to three months and we hope so. At the moment, I am not seeing fully except to identify colours that are very close to me.”

For 71 years old Rosadeen Rakiya, she was scared of going permanently blind and had gone to another hospital after the incident, where it was confirmed to her that she would regain her sight.

Rakiya said: “Two of my eyes were injected and I could not see again thereafter. But following the treatment we have been receiving, I can see but not clearly yet. But I can walk on my own now.

“The doctors told us that our sights would improve gradually. After the incident, I went to another hospital to find out if I could see again and I was told I would see again.

“Today, I am happy I can see, even though not completely clear. For two weeks after the injection, I could not see, but I thank God today.”

Another patient, Hajara Husaaini, whose one eye was affected, also confirmed improvement in her vision after the surgery and commended the hospital management for its efforts

According her, “the hospital, since the incident, havs been treating us for free, and as at today (Wednesday), I can see with the eye slightly.

“The hospital still treats us and the doctors have assured us that all will be well.”

However, contrary to the accounts of others, Mr. Zakariah Idzy said he still could not see anything even after the surgery.

He said: “I have gone through series of operations since the incident but I am still not seeing. About four doctors carried out various tests on me but my situation still remains the same. Although a female doctor told me the healing will be gradual and I hope so.”

Idzy’s wife, who cried as she spoke to journalists, lamented that the situation of her husband, being the breadwinner of the family, has caused untold hardship, as they now borrow money to feed.

“I presently borrow money to feed the family and even to come to the hospital to see my husband. My daughter has left all she is doing to remain here with the father while I take care of the home,” she said.

But, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Mahmoud Alhassan, assured that, like others, Mr. Idzy will regain his sight too and very soon.

The CMD reiterated the commitment of the hospital to doing all it takes to address the situation, saying that the hospital had since the incident been up and doing on their case, working round the clock, which has resulted in tremendous successes.

He explained that, what happened was an accident which the hospital has learnt a lot from and will guard against.

  • Bandits kill 18 in fresh Zamfara attacks

RAMPAGING bandits yesterday kidnapped the head of Yan Buki community in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Buhari Ammani, along with his three wives.

Also abducted by the gunmen were Ammani’s children and six other people.

The incident occurred hours after gunmen also invaded some communities in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state on Thursday, killing no fewer than 18 persons, according to the Emir of Tsafe, Alhaji Muhammad Bawa.

A resident of Yan Buki community, who pleaded anonymity, told The Nation that the bandits struck at about 1.30 am yesterday.

The Chairman of the local government area, Alhaji Lawal Isa, also confirmed the raid.

He put the number of the kidnapped at nine, saying it was the first attack in the area by the gunmen who have been causing trouble in the state.

Although the spokesman for the state police command, Muhammad Shehu, also confirmed the attack, he debunked the number of people said to have been kidnapped.

He said the matter was still being investigated, adding that the police would make public the actual number of people kidnapped.

Explaining the killings in Tsafe, the emir, Alhaji Bawa, told the House of Representatives member from Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, Alhaji Kabir Mai-Palace, in Gusau that the gunmen raided Bamamu, Danmale and Sako communities on Thursday evening, during which they went on a killing spree.

Bawa said the bandits came on more than 50 motorcycles and shot sporadically.

Mai-Palace had called on the emir to commiserate with him and the people of the area over the attacks.

The emir thanked the lawmaker for the visit and his concern for his people.

Earlier, Mai-Palace had described the attack as unfortunate and worrisome.

He said: “Security is the major area I am giving priority to. It is very disheartening the way these bandits are attacking our communities.

“If I go back to Abuja, I am going to raise these issues in the House with the aim of finding solutions to the problems.

“As a representative of the people, I don’t have any commitment beyond the interest of my people.

“l am also going to present this incident to the governor, Muhammad Matawallen-Maradun.”

The lawmaker, however, urged the people of the state to remain calm and continue with prayers to seek Allah’s intervention to end the problem.

The lawmaker donated cash and 20 mattresses to the victims in the hospital and held a closed door meeting with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Tsafe Division of the Nigeria Police.

  • ‘Why I killed my girlfriend’s mother’

A 39-year-old dismissed policeman, Christian Ogwu, who allegedly shot dead his girlfriend’s mother, Veronica Obiejiogo, says he took the action because the woman advised  her daughter, Blessing Obiejiogo against  marrying him.

The 45-year-old woman was shot dead by the suspect in the presence of her children at their residence in Otolokpo community in Ika North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Ogwu allegedly fled to Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, after the shooting.

Acting on a petition from the family of the deceased, the Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, directed his operatives at the IRT, headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, to go after the suspect and bring him to book.

The suspect was eventually arrested, following a tipoff in a commercial bank in Port Harcourt, five months later.

He alleged that  the deceased  made his girlfriend to abort the three month pregnancy she had for him ,and also  cancelled their marriage ceremony scheduled for December 27, 2018, after spending a lot of money on his girlfriend.

However, another source who pleaded for anonymity said  that the deceased discouraged her daughter from going on with the marriage with Christian following information that he  was a fraudster.

Confessing, the suspect said: “ I am  a graduate of Marine Engineering at the University of Benin. I was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force in the year, 2000, but was dismissed after some armed robbers stole a smoke gun that was assigned to me at a checking point.  My Force Number was 371416 and I was trained at the Police College in Ikeja, Lagos,  but I was posted to Iho Police Division at the Edo State Police Command, where I served for five years before I was dismissed because a motorbike rider snatched the smoke pistol I was holding at a checking point.’’

“ In the course of doing my fraud business, I met a girl known as Blessing Obijeogoh, at Ogwuachukwu Polytechnic Delta State and she was a student of that school. She told me she was single and we entered into a relationship and in the process she became pregnant and she aborted the pregnancy.

‘’She told me that she could not have a child for me because I wasn’t known to her family, so in April, 2018 I went for  formal introduction and her family asked  me to come back for a more elaborate introduction ceremony and then they will issue me the list for her marriage.

‘’On September 7, 2018, I went there again with my family and we had the ceremony and I got the list.  In October of that same year, she informed me that she was pregnant and I said no problem that we would have to hurry up the marriage. We then fixed December 27, 2018 as the date of the marriage and I gave her money to buy cloths we would  use for the marriage”.

“On December 5, 2018, she called me and said she was on her way to Asaba, where I resided and after waiting for her for a long time , I started calling her and she wasn’t picking her calls.

‘’Then one of her brothers known as Friday informed  me that Blessing was sick and she was at the hospital in Asaba with her mother and she had complications from  abortion of the pregnancy.

‘’I went to the hospital to see the doctor but I was refused access to Blessing and her mother.  I noticed something was fishy, and I called her to know what was going on and she told me that she was in Asaba, in her friend’s place.

‘’I went there but I couldn’t see her and I waited all day without seeing her and I stopped looking for her. Surprisingly on December 21, 2018, she called me again and informed me that she had travelled to Lagos and I became very angry and confused believing that Blessing and her mother took me for a fool.   ‘’Then I  met one of my friends known as Steven and I narrated why  I was going to him and Steven then advised me to calm down, but I was so angry and I needed to deal with the girl and her mother.

‘’ I asked Steven to get me a gun with two live cartridges which he did and I paid him the sum of N10,000. On December 26, 2018, which was supposed to be the eve of our marriage, I took the gun to Blessing’s village, I investigated and I discovered that she was in town and when I called her she said she was in Lagos.

He added: ‘’I went to a shop close to her shop where  I bought a bottle of dry gin and sachets of Tramadol and I took them at once to get inspiration so I won’t be scared and have a change of mind. While I did this, I sighted her mother and her younger brother walking towards my direction, and I went to them and brought out my gun and  shot Blessings mother and I watched her die from the wound before I zoomed off on the bike I rode.’’
