Heavy security at Awujale palace as Ogun halts selection process again

Armed security operatives drawn from the Police, Department of State Service (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), Amotekun and So-Safe Corps have beefed up security along Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Archway leading to the Ijebu – Ode palace of the Awujale of Ijebuland over concerns that some powerful interests planned to infiltrate the meeting of the Kingmakers in a location within the facility and foist a candidate on them.

The Fusengbuwa Ruling House leaders – Otunba Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi (Olori Ebi), Prince Adedokun Ajidagba (Deputy Olori – Ebi), Professor Fassy Yusuf (Vice Chairman) and others- on Monday, January 19, submitted the list bearing names of the 95 nominees(candidates) to the kingmakers who were expected to meet at the Palace to begin the process of selecting one candidate out of the 95 nominees but security operatives were sighted manning the entrance.

However, a letter by the Ogun State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, dated January 20, 2026 directed the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to halt further steps on the selection process of the next Awujale until further notice.

“The State Government hereby directs that you convey this decision to the Awujale Kingmakers Council and the Fusengbuwa Ruling House immediately. The latter particularly, should be advised to await further directives regarding the selection process,” the letter reads in part.

Commissioner for Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, who signed the letter and addressed to the Ijebu Ode Local Government Chairman, cited security concern and the need to protect public order and the integrity of the stool as reasons for the decision.

“State Government has received several petitions, reports from security agencies and other key stakeholders in relation to the ongoing selection process. In order to maintain public order, protect the integrity of the process, and maintain the veneration of the stool, it has become imperative to halt the selection process for the stool at this time,” he stated.

The Nation reports that a prince reportedly already endorsed by the Oracle (Ifa) as the best candidate to succeed late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona and transform Ijebuland to a greater height was among the 95 nominees that emerged recently in the race for the throne..

The Nation reports that Princess Oluwakemi Adetokunboh, Prince Adebisi Kadiri; a retired Permanent Secretary, Lagos State, Prince Abdul – Fatai Arowolo of Aeron Construction, an engineering firm, Prince Olumuyiwa Adeyemi, Prince Okeowo Obafemi and Prince Adegbenga Bakare were among the 95 nominees jostling to become the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

Owoyemi, who is Otunba Jadiara of Ijebuland and former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), revealed that the royal family had carried out extensive traditional research to arrive at a decision to support one candidate among the 95, who he declined to name.

The list bearing names of the 95 nominees was endorsed by the quartet of the Olori – Ebi Fusengbuwa house, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi;  his Deputy Prince Adedokun Ajidagba, Vice Chairman, Professor Fassy Yusuf and Pastor Bolarinde Salami (Secretary of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House) while the nomination process attracted officials of the Ijebu Ode Local Government led by the Secretary to Local Government, Hon. Adebanjo Oke, as observers.

Owoyemi said: “We have successfully, peacefully and harmoniously nominated 95 candidates today. Now it’s in the hands of the kingmakers to do their work and select one of them for us. We in Fusengbuwa ruling house have done a lot of traditional research through the oracles to guide us on what’s going to happen. And the one spoken by the Oracle is among the nominees.

“And we have no doubt at all that the king makers are going to select the person that the Almighty God himself has appointed, the one that our ancestors have also blessed.

“It’s a win-win for everybody because even those who may not be appointed the king will serve in the palace by the grace of God. Everyone that applied has document guaranteeing that no matter what, there will be no litigation. So, we can be so rest assured that by the grace of Almighty God, we are going to be very, very happy.

“We know the government is going to do the right thing and support what the family supports… And God will guide them right… So that they pick for us the Awujale that, I’m told, will make Ijebu the biggest, greatest city in the whole of Africa. I’m not going to talk about the person the family supports now because you saw us nominating 95 of them… We support one of them.

“So, we are hopeful that the Kingmakers and the government select the best person for us. And we know they will not make any mistake.”

  • APC e-registration sparks friendly rivalry across Enugu wards

APC e-registration sparks friendly rivalry across Enugu wards

A spirited competition has emerged among communities in Enugu State as the All Progressives Congress (APC) e-registration programme gathers momentum, with wards vowing to outdo one another in enrolment figures and grassroots mobilisation.

The ongoing exercise was flagged off at Ugbawka Wards 1 and 2 in Nkanu East LGA, Amaechi Ward 1 in Enugu South LGA, and Awgu Ward 2 in Awgu LGA, where leaders, stakeholders and residents turned the registration drive into a show of unity, confidence, and healthy rivalry.

Speaking at Community Secondary School, Amafor Ugbawka, chairman of Nkanu East LGA, Hon. Sydney Edeh, attributed growing enthusiasm for the APC to what he described as tangible dividends of governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Peter Mbah.

Edeh, who doubles as the chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), noted that federal roads were receiving renewed attention, the exchange rate had stabilised to the benefit of business owners, and perennial clashes involving herdsmen destroying farmlands in Ugbawka had become a thing of the past.

According to him, the direct flow of funds to local governments under the current administration has enabled councils to construct kilometres of roads and bridges, adding that incentives would be given to wards and agents that outperform others in the e-registration exercise, an announcement that further fuelled competition among participants.

“I don’t want to talk about the number of Smart schools and new hospital projects built already on Ugbawka by Governor Mbah or the number of roads projects

At Awgu Ward 2, the Managing Director of Fontana Group of Companies, High Chief Francis Osita Nwobi, said mobilisation had been seamless because of the trust the people repose in their leaders.

He commended Governor Mbah’s performance in office and disclosed that community leaders and members of the diaspora had returned home to encourage mass registration.

High Chief Nwobi added that the ward had benefited from federal projects facilitated by its elected representatives, reinforcing the community’s resolve to support the APC-led government at all levels.

Echoing this sentiment, Mr. Gilbert Onuoha said the large turnout reflected the people’s belief in their leaders and confidence in Governor Mbah’s leadership, while diaspora leader, Barr. Smart Nwobi, described the governor’s achievements as compelling reasons to mobilise total support.

The competitive spirit was equally pronounced at Amaechi Ward 1 in Enugu South LGA.

Former Commissioner, Chief John Egbo, pledged that the ward would not only deliver the APC in the 2027 elections but would also emerge as the top-performing ward in the current registration drive.

Former APC House of Representatives candidate, Mrs. Juliet Egbo, expressed joy over the influx of new members, describing the alignment of Enugu State with the APC as a strategic move for the future of the Southeast.

State Coordinator of the APC e-registration programme, Chief Flavour Eze, reminded residents that the exercise was a mandate of the President and disclosed that Governor Mbah had promised rewards for wards with the highest registration figures.

He further explained that planned empowerment programmes by the state and federal governments would be accessible only to registered party members, urging residents to come along with their National Identification Number (NIN) and voter’s card details.

Across the wards, chants, pledges, and declarations underscored a common resolve: to out-register neighbouring communities and prove loyalty through numbers.

As the exercise continues, the emerging rivalry is fast becoming a driving force in expanding the APC’s grassroots presence across Enugu State.

Nigerian teacher leaves classroom after 13 years to sell suya in London

A Nigerian, Kolawole Ajayi, has sparked widespread reactions on social media after revealing that he left his career as a nursery and primary school teacher in Nigeria to become a full-time suya seller in London.

Ajayi’s story gained attention following a viral interview on TikTok by @Onijekujelondon, where he was seen preparing suya while recounting his transition from the classroom to entrepreneurship abroad.

In the interview, Ajayi disclosed that he spent 13 years working as a teacher in Nigeria while running a suya business as a side hustle.

He said he also explored other income streams, including YouTube content creation, catering and barbecue services.

According to him, financial realities ultimately influenced his decision to quit teaching.

“I was doing it for like 13 years as a side hustle. I was cooking, doing YouTube videos, catering for people, and doing barbecues. When my passive income became about half of my salary, I decided to leave my nursery job and focus on this full-time,” he said.

Ajayi explained that as the suya business expanded, it became more profitable and sustainable than his teaching job, prompting his full transition into entrepreneurship.

He noted that the journey has not been without challenges, recalling incidents such as unfavourable weather conditions that disrupted his business, including a moment when strong winds scattered his suya pepper.

The viral video has generated mixed reactions online. While some users praised his courage and resilience, others expressed criticism.

One TikTok user, @MrsHil, claimed to have personal knowledge of Ajayi, writing, “He managed my children’s nursery. Nice to see him thriving.”

However, other commenters shared less favourable opinions. A business owner, Non Tarnish Jewelry Store, said they admired his YouTube content but described their personal interaction with him as disappointing.

Another user, @Venom, claimed Ajayi earned about £140 as a teacher in Nigeria, reigniting debate over teachers’ welfare and salaries in the country.

Some social media users also questioned the quality of his food, while others raised concerns about hygiene during the interview.

Yhemolee blames Seun Kuti for Fela’s online disrespect

Nightlife influencer Yhemolee has weighed in on the online feud between Wizkid and Seun Kuti, blaming Seun for provoking the backlash.

The dispute ignited last week when Seun accused Wizkid FC of disrespecting Fela’s legacy by comparing the late legend to the Grammy-winning artist.

In a Snapchat post, Yhemolee argued that Wizkid’s fans, mostly young people, know little or nothing about Fela Kuti and were simply reacting to comparisons made by Seun himself.

Yhemolee pointed out that Wizkid is a generational icon, with fans who grew up listening to his music, and that many Nigerians only know Fela through history lessons or limited exposure.

He criticised Seun for engaging with online trolls and bringing unnecessary embarrassment to the Kuti family.

“Innocent wife self collect inside, Nigerians know Fela shouldn’t be disrespected as a matter of fact this is the first time I’m ever seeing anything disrespectful about Fela courtesy you!!! Go carry sax Egbon leave FC”.

Yhemolee also highlighted the age gap, noting that Fela died 29 years ago, and the teenagers and Gen Z involved in the feud wouldn’t know much about him.

He concluded that Seun’s actions have led to Fela’s name being disrespected online.

“No be only you be Fela piken!! Only you won face FC? How? Wetin you chop?? Rage baited wiz till e burst out!! And everybody know sey the man mouth worst! I didn’t think a day would come I will read very silly and embarrassing stuff about FELA. Fela died 29yrs ago!! Who dem born that same year self would be 30yrs next year. Daddy Freeze: Wizkid not comparable to Fela

Media personality Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, has spoken on the heated online debates comparing global Afrobeats sensation Wizkid to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.

In a recent video broadcast, Daddy Freeze firmly stated that such comparisons are invalid, emphasising that Fela’s legacy extends far beyond music into profound activism and sacrifice.

He described Fela not merely as a musician but as a dedicated freedom fighter, philanthropist, and staunch critic of oppressive governance.

Daddy Freeze argued that Wizkid would need to demonstrate similar real-world courage before any legitimate parallel could be drawn.

He said, “Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and stone the government, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela”.

He highlighted Fela’s harrowing experiences, including brutal imprisonments, physical assaults, and his 1995 release from prison due to illness to prevent public outrage if he died in custody.

“Did you know that Fela was released from prison just to prevent him from dying there?. They released him to go and die at his home because they knew his death would spark an uproar if he died in the prison. That was 1995, I was a fresher in the university then,” he added.

The broadcaster stressed that Fela was no mere troublemaker; his activism and music were inseparable, forming a powerful tool for social and political change.

“Fela was not a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter. We are talking about music, but I cannot talk about Fela, if I don’t talk about everything he stood for. His activism and music went hand-in-glove. You can’t separate the two,”  he added.

Hilda Baci breaks another record, becomes three-time Guinness record holder

Celebrity chef Hilda Baci has announced that she is now a three-time Guinness World Records holder, with her latest recognition stemming from a record-breaking jollof rice cook in September 2025.

According to Hilda on Instagram, she received the news, confirming that her jollof rice feat had broken not one, but two records: largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice and largest serving of rice overall.

This adds to her existing record for the longest cooking marathon, set in 2023 with a total of 93 hours and 11 minutes of continuous cooking.

The massive 8,780-kilogram pot of jollof rice was enough to feed over 16,600 people and was verified by Guinness World Records on September 15, 2025.

Hilda expressed gratitude, thanking her team, Guinness World Records, and everyone who supported her.

She wrote: “Woke up a three-time Guinness World Records holder and I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. What a way to step into 2026.

“This morning, I was just doing my usual routine, casually scrolling through my emails, when I saw the message come in. I was shocked and happy at the same time, completely caught off guard. Five months after the initial record announcement, I was just finding out that there was more.

“When I and @ginonaija broke the Guinness World Record for the largest serving of Nigerian-style jollof rice, I thought that was it. What I didn’t know, until now, is that on that same day, we had also broken the record for the largest serving of rice overall. So what I thought was one record… turned out to be two. And now, officially, that makes three Guinness World Records in total.

“The very first person I called was @oreoluwa_atinmo , because this journey, this vision, and this record would not have been possible without her. We did this together. From idea to execution, side by side, fully aligned. Sharing that moment with her made everything feel real.

“Honestly, God is faithful. The kind of faithful that still surprises you. This feels like such a beautiful reminder that even when you think you’ve seen the full picture, God can still say, “There’s more.” What a blessing, and what a way to enter this new year.

“To my incredible team, this is OUR win. Every long day, every detail, every push, it all mattered. To Guinness World Records, @guinnessworldrecords thank you for the recognition and for honoring this achievement. And to everyone who supported, believed, and stood with us, my heart is so full. Still processing. Still grateful. Still in awe”.

Seven Asian countries offering Nigerians e-visa

Several Asian countries have eased travel requirements for Nigerian passport holders by introducing electronic visa (e-visa) systems. These platforms allow travellers to submit applications online, reducing the need for embassy visits and making the process faster and more convenient.

However, applicants are advised to always confirm current visa requirements, documentation, processing timelines and eligibility conditions via official immigration channels, as policies may change without notice.

Here are seven Asian destinations where Nigerians can access e-visa options, with specific requirements:

    1. South Korea
South Korea offers an e-visa option for Nigerians; however, applicants are required to submit physical documents through the Visa Application Centre (VFS). All supporting documents must be provided as part of the application process.

    3. Malaysia
Nigerians are eligible for Malaysia’s e-visa programme for tourism, business and social visits. The application process is completed entirely online with digital submission of required documents.

    4. Thailand
Thailand provides an e-visa service for Nigerians, allowing online applications for tourism and other approved travel purposes. Applicants are required to submit a police character certificate and a report from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    5. Philippines
The Philippines offers an e-visa option that simplifies short-stay applications for Nigerian travellers visiting for tourism or business purposes.

    6. Hong Kong
Nigerian travellers can apply online for a Hong Kong e-visa or complete a pre-arrival registration, depending on the purpose and duration of stay. The process often requires extensive documentation, including pictorial proof of previous travel history.

    7. Indonesia
Indonesia grants Nigerians access to its e-visa platform for tourism, business and other approved categories. The application generally involves limited documentation compared to other destinations.
