JUST IN: Fire guts shopping complex in Lagos

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday razed a one-storey shopping complex and adjoining shops along Amore Street, Ajegunle Boundary area of Lagos, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that the incident was reported at about 2:40 a.m. through its 767/112 toll-free emergency lines, prompting the immediate activation of the state’s emergency response plans from its Cappa Base in Oshodi.

According to a preliminary report signed by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, emergency responders arrived at the scene by 3:22 a.m. and found active flames engulfing the shopping complex, which housed several clothing dealers.

“The high volume of combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of the intense fire,” the agency stated, noting that the blaze also affected surrounding shops used for the storage and sale of clothes.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by a power surge following the restoration of public electricity supply. LASEMA, however, confirmed that no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded.

It said, “Upon arrival, LASEMA Response Team conducted Risk Assessment of the incident scene and cordoned off the activity area. Agency’s Response Team activated Safety and Precautionary Measures to forestall damage to adjoining buildings and the immediate environs of the incident scene.

“Prompt interventions were implemented by LRT in collaboration with other responders to forestall escalation of the fire to adjoining buildings and eventually extinguish it. LRT coordinated the multi-agency response to ensure a quick and safe operation

“The entire one-storey shopping complex and surrounding shops were completely razed by the fire. All goods and properties stored therein were destroyed,” the statement said, adding that parts of the structure were compromised and would require immediate structural assessment.

Fire-fighting operations successfully contained the blaze within the affected area, while damping-down operations are ongoing to eliminate residual heat and prevent re-ignition. LASEMA said rescue and recovery operations have been concluded, although monitoring of the site will continue.

The agency urged commercial property owners in the area to review fire safety measures and storage protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

HFM Facilitates Capacity-Building Training for Nigerian Police Investigators on Digital Trading and Scam Detection

HFM, one of the leading global online trading brands, concluded a three-day Strategic Training on Digital Trading and Forex-Related Financial Crime Investigation for senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), held from 12th to 14th January 2026 in Lagos.

The training was designed to build capacity and strengthen the knowledge and investigative skills of officers of the Nigeria Police Force, enabling them to respond effectively to the growing number of cases involving digital trading, forex-related disputes, and financial crimes that sit at the intersection of finance, technology, and human behaviour.

The programme was held with the approval of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, who was ably represented throughout the training programme by the Commissioner of Police, Department of Training and Development, CP Eloho E. Okpoziakpo.

Delivering remarks on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, CP Okpoziakpo noted that the Nigeria Police Force must continuously evolve to keep pace with emerging forms of crime.

“As financial systems and digital platforms continue to evolve, so too must our investigative capacity. Officers are now required to understand complex financial instruments and digital trading environments in order to effectively protect the public and uphold justice,” the IGP stated.

He emphasized that the training aligns with the ongoing Police reform agenda, which prioritizes professionalism, intelligence-led policing, and strategic partnerships.

“This programme reflects our commitment to modern, technology-driven policing and underscores the importance of collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and credible private-sector institutions in addressing emerging financial crimes. Our ultimate goal is to protect citizens, ensure fairness, and prevent the criminalization of legitimate economic activities while decisively addressing fraud and deception” the IGP added.

The programme was formally opened with a welcome address by the Managing Director of HFM Nigeria, Mr. Ope Abiola, who highlighted the importance of clarity in understanding digital trading systems.

“Financial markets have evolved far more rapidly than public understanding. Alongside innovation, we have seen new forms of abuse, misrepresentation, and fraud. This training was designed to provide clarity. Clarity on how digital trading systems work, where risks lie, and how to distinguish legitimate market loss from criminal deception,” he said.

He further explained that the programme was structured to support investigators with evidence-based frameworks rather than opinion, enabling officers to make informed decisions when handling complex financial cases.

Over the three days, participants were taken through practical sessions covering:

    • The fundamentals of digital trading systems and forex markets
    • Common patterns of financial abuse and misrepresentation
    • The distinction between market risk and criminal intent
    • Roles and responsibilities of traders, brokers, and other market participants
    • Real-world case studies and investigative frameworks

Through this partnership, HFM reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that strengthen institutional capacity, promote financial literacy, and contribute to safer digital trading environments in Nigeria.

  • 2027: APC chieftain warns against replacing Shettima on religious grounds

2027: APC chieftain warns against replacing Shettima on religious grounds

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and renowned security expert, Amb. Abayomi Mumuni has cautioned against any move to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima on religious grounds ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He said Shettima is a good representation of the North and a candidate with the political clout and followership required to deliver substantial electoral support.

Mumuni, who was a member of the intelligence and security team, an arm of Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) during the 2023 Presidential election, stated that such a decision could undermine the ruling APC’s chances of retaining power.

He made the remarks while reacting to controversies that followed the exclusion of Vice President Shettima’s photograph from a banner displayed at the North-East Zonal Public Hearing on the amendment of the APC constitution, a development that has fuelled speculation about an alleged plan to drop him from the 2027 ticket.

According to Mumuni, discussions about substituting Shettima with a Christian vice-presidential candidate, ostensibly to address concerns about religious inclusivity, are not strategically sound in the current political climate.

He stressed that the northern region does not, at the moment, have a Christian candidate with sufficient grassroots acceptance and nationwide appeal capable of complementing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s electoral strength.

“Any miscalculation in this regard could jeopardise the winning ticket for the current administration,” he warned, adding that electoral arithmetic, rather than sentiment, must guide such high-stakes political decisions.

Mumuni further highlighted Vice President Shettima’s “unwavering loyalty and commitment” to President Tinubu and the administration’s policy objectives, describing this loyalty as a critical stabilising factor in governance.

He argued that replacing a vice president who has demonstrated consistency and alignment with the president’s vision could introduce unnecessary uncertainty into the political system.

While acknowledging that calls for greater Christian representation in leadership are legitimate and well-intentioned, the APC stalwart urged party leaders to explore alternative pathways that would not weaken the existing alliance.

He suggested that inclusivity could be strengthened through strategic appointments of credible individuals with proven influence, competence, and commitment to national unity and development.

Mumuni also cautioned against drawing parallels between Nigeria’s political situation and foreign examples, such as the United States under President Donald Trump.

He noted that Nigeria’s socio-political environment is unique and requires home-grown solutions rather than imported political templates that may not resonate with the country’s complex realities.

Outlining the possible implications of changing the vice president, Mumuni listed several risks, including threats to political stability, mixed public perception, internal party rifts, and potential loss of electoral advantage.

He explained that a new vice president could struggle with acceptance, loyalty, and alignment with the president’s agenda, factors that are crucial for effective governance.

He added that such a transition could also affect policy direction and administrative efficiency, as a new vice president would require time to adjust to the demands of office, potentially slowing down governance during a critical period.

In conclusion, Mumuni maintained that preserving the current Tinubu–Shettima alliance remains the best option for Nigeria as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.

He called for constructive dialogue within the APC on how to enhance representation and inclusivity without compromising political stability and effective governance.

“Maintaining cohesion and focusing on good governance will best serve Nigeria’s interests,” he said, urging party stakeholders to prioritise unity and strategic thinking over divisive speculation.

  • Why new counter-terrorism sector established in Adamawa – Military

Why new counter-terrorism sector established in Adamawa – Military

The military high command said it established Sector 4 under Operation Hadin Kai in Adamawa State to block terrorist movement between Borno and the northern part of Adamawa State.

The Theatre Commander Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalami Abubakar, said this when he received Defence Correspondents in his office in Maiduguri, Borno State.

According to him, Operation Hadin Kai initially had three sectors; however, a fourth was later established to strengthen the fight against terrorists by enabling a rapid troop response to threats in northern Adamawa State.

He said, “There is a village in Northern Adamawa, which is just 50 kilometers from Borno, but it took our troops almost five hours to get to that community. It’s virtually inaccessible.

“Basically, we are trying to block the link between northern Adamawa and southern Borno. Right now, the sector is doing a lot to make sure that isolated communities are protected. And most of these communities are vulnerable.

“So daily, the sector is on top of its game to make sure that we’re able to protect this community.”

The Theater Commander noted that it was practically impossible to deploy everywhere, but strategically deployed troops based on threat assessment.

“So, daily, the sector is on top of its game to ensure that we can protect this community.”

“We do a review every day to see how we can do our best to protect these communities,” he said.

Addressing concerns about a perceived resurgence of terrorism after the recent suicide bombing in Maiduguri, General Abubakar described it as ‘the kick of a dying horse.”

He said the terrorists resort to desperate tactics when they are unable to match the military’s capacity in kinetic operations.

Abubakar said, “They resort to suicide bombing and also the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) when they see that they cannot match our capacity in kinetic operations. It’s like the kick of a dying horse. And we’re very deliberate in quickly nipping that in the bud.

“Consequent to the suicide bombing incident in the mosque in Maiduguri, we have arrested 15 would-be suicide bombers. We have neutralized three. And we’re able to even get the mastermind of that suicide bombing, who was living like a normal human being in the metropolises.”

On the use of armed drones by terrorists, the Theatre Commander explained that ISWAP obtains the technology through its connections with international terror groups, including ISIS in Libya, Syria, and other regions. He emphasized that the military has successfully neutralized many of these drones.

According to him, the military has evolved a standard operating procedure on how to combat this menace.

“We have also invested in technical equipment. But an armed drone does not have one solution. You also realize that if you talk about Ukraine and Russia for now, with the level of advancement of these countries in technology, there are still armed drone attacks there.

“There are multiple ways that you need to come up with to curtail this, and we are doing so in the theater,” he said.

  • Oyetola launches Cabotage vessel financing fund portal to boost indigenous ship ownership

Oyetola launches Cabotage vessel financing fund portal to boost indigenous ship ownership

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has officially unveiled the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) Application Portal, a milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to establish structured financing for indigenous ship ownership.

The launch, held in Lagos on Thursday, attracted senior government officials, maritime industry leaders, legislators, and key sector stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Oyetola described the portal’s inauguration as “a deliberate and strategic step in repositioning Nigeria’s maritime sector as a central pillar of national development.”

He added that the initiative supports the broader national goal of economic diversification while unlocking the vast potential of Nigeria’s maritime domain, coastal resources, and inland waterways.

“The maritime sector remains the backbone of global commerce, yet despite Nigeria’s strategic geographic location and vibrant entrepreneurial base, our participation in coastal and inland trade has remained limited,” the Minister said.

“A major constraint has been the absence of a functional, credible, and transparent financing framework to support indigenous ship ownership. Today, we are changing that narrative.”

The Minister recalled that the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund, established under the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act of 2003, was designed to address the financing gap faced by Nigerian shipowners.

He, however, acknowledged that institutional and structural considerations over the years delayed its operationalisation.

Oyetola added that upon assuming office, his Ministry adopted a clear policy objective to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime capacity and ensure that the CVFF is implemented strictly in line with sound governance and financial principles.

“The CVFF is structured as a strategic development instrument,” he said. “By facilitating access to competitive vessel financing for indigenous operators, we hope to reduce reliance on foreign-flagged vessels in our coastal trade, improve retention of value within the domestic economy, create employment opportunities for Nigerian seafarers, and stimulate growth in allied sectors such as shipbuilding, ship repair, and maritime services.”

He further emphasised that the Fund’s impact extends beyond economics, noting that a stronger indigenous fleet would enhance maritime safety and security while supporting national efforts to maintain a regulated and efficient maritime domain.

Stressing accountability, he reminded potential beneficiaries that the CVFF is a revolving fund that must be prudently utilised and repaid to ensure sustainability for future generations of maritime entrepreneurs.

The Minister explained that the newly launched digital portal would serve as the institutional gateway for the transparent administration of the Fund.

“Through this platform, eligible Nigerian shipowners can submit applications that will be assessed against clearly defined criteria, supported by robust due diligence and professional financial oversight through approved Primary Lending Institutions,” he said.

He said that the portal aligns with the Federal Government’s e-Government agenda and efforts to reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks and improve ease of doing business.

“By digitising the end-to-end CVFF application and evaluation process, we are simplifying access, improving predictability, and ensuring service delivery is efficient, transparent, and responsive,” he said. “I am confident that this initiative will strengthen our shipping industry, empower Nigerian enterprise, and contribute meaningfully to national growth,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring the CVFF delivers on its purpose. He stated that NIMASA has established a dedicated CVFF unit to drive implementation, manage applications, coordinate with financial institutions, and ensure strict adherence to eligibility, compliance, and risk management procedures.

“Our objective is to make the CVFF work as a practical and reliable financing window for Nigerian shipowners to acquire vessels at competitive long-term financing rates,” he said.

He assured that the agency will ensure professional handling of applications, continuous engagement with Primary Lending Institutions, rigorous due diligence, and transparent monitoring of the entire process.

He said the agency is determined to build confidence in the system and ensure that every disbursement follows clear rules, measurable criteria and global best practice.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, Senator Wasiu Eshinloku, and the Chairman of the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration, Hon. Khadija Bukar Abba Ibrahim.

Both legislators commended Minister Oyetola and NIMASA for what they described as a landmark achievement that responds to longstanding demands of the maritime community. They pledged continued legislative support to ensure effective implementation of the Fund and sustained reforms in the sector.

Industry stakeholders also expressed strong support for the initiative. The President of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association, Mike Igbokwe (SAN); President of the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping, Aminu Umar; President of the Nigerian Shipowners Association, Sola Adewunmi, and President of the Shipowners Association of Nigeria, Sonny Eja, all praised the Minister and NIMASA for their commitment to finally unlocking the CVFF.

They described the portal launch as a turning point for indigenous ship ownership, capacity development, and investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime sector.

The CVFF was established under the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act of 2003 as a vital instrument to provide structured financing for Nigerian shipping companies to acquire vessels and participate meaningfully in domestic maritime trade. However, for more than two decades, the Fund remained largely inaccessible, leaving indigenous operators dependent on costly foreign financing or foreign-flagged vessels.

Recall that in 2025, Dr Oyetola directed NIMASA to commence the process of disbursing the CVFF, signalling a firm commitment to actualising the Fund’s original intent and unlocking its immense potential for national economic growth.

Responding to this directive, NIMASA issued a Marine Notice inviting eligible Nigerian shipping companies to submit applications. Qualified applicants will have the opportunity to access up to USD 25 million each at competitive interest rates to acquire modern vessels that meet stringent international safety and performance standards.

The Fund’s administration will be conducted in close collaboration with carefully vetted and approved Primary Lending Institutions, ensuring a professional, efficient, and accountable disbursement process.

Why I like to stay out of trouble – Adekunle Gold

Afrobeats singer Adekunle Gold has opened up on his deliberate choice of prioritising peace over trouble and conflict in his daily life.

In a recent video, the ‘Orente’ crooner emphasised his preference for a tranquil lifestyle, stating, “Some of us, we just don’t like trouble. In fact, I don’t want to be near it, I just want to live.”

Adekunle Gold attributed his avoidance of conflict to self-awareness about his temperament, confessing, “Me, I know myself. My mouth is not good at all. Anybody who knows me knows my mouth is not good. So, I don’t even want to say anything out of regret, so I’d rather just step away.”

Firm launches digital motor inspection tool

AXA Mansard Insurance has launched a digital motor insurance inspection process aimed at making vehicle inspection faster and more convenient for customers.

The new solution, powered by insurance technology firm Curacel, allows customers to carry out required vehicle inspections by uploading photographs of their vehicles using their smartphones.

It applies to the initiation of comprehensive motor insurance policies, policy renewals, and claims assessment.

The company said the tool is part of its ongoing drive to simplify and personalise insurance services through digitisation.

Images submitted by customers are scanned through an automated review system, which generates inspection reports that are integrated into AXA Mansard’s existing underwriting and claims processes.

Commenting on the launch, Chief Technology Officer, AXA Mansard Insurance, Chizuru Nwankwonta, said the innovation would reduce delays associated with physical inspections.

“At AXA Mansard, we continue to introduce solutions that make insurance processes easier and faster. This digital inspection option reduces the need for physical assessments and gives customers more flexibility in completing key stages of their motor insurance journey,” she said.

The digital inspection system was developed in collaboration with Curacel, whose platform supports image submission, automated screening, and document processing.

AXA Mansard said the partnership reflects its strategy of working with external technology providers to enhance specific operational functions.

The company added that the digital inspection process is now available nationwide and can be accessed through its customer platforms and links provided during motor insurance onboarding.

  • 2027: APC Forum rejects alleged plan to drop Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate

2027: APC Forum rejects alleged plan to drop Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has rejected renewed efforts to replace Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the 2027 presidential election, warning that such a move would amount to a major political error.

The Forum said recent signals indicate that some elements within the ruling party are pushing for Shettima’s removal, following the omission of his image from a banner featuring APC leaders in the North-East.

According to the group, the banner, seen during the North-East Zonal public hearing on proposed amendments to the APC constitution in Maiduguri, displayed only the images of President Bola Tinubu, the five APC governors in the zone, and the party’s national legal adviser.

The development has reignited debate over the future of the APC’s Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in 2027 and raised questions about Shettima’s political standing, with some party stakeholders advocating his replacement with a Christian from the North.

The Forum further noted that certain North-Central groups are calling for a Christian from the region to emerge as Tinubu’s running mate in 2027.

However, in a statement issued on Thursday, the North-Central APC Forum cautioned that replacing Shettima could endanger the party’s electoral prospects and undermine President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

It stressed that the North-Central is not seeking the vice-presidential slot, but is instead positioning itself for the presidency in 2031, after the completion of Tinubu’s tenure.

Read Also: APC support group urges retention of 2022 zoning formula ahead of 2026 convention

The Forum also warned against introducing religious considerations into political strategy, arguing that the North currently lacks a Christian contender with the grassroots reach, national appeal, and political structure needed to effectively complement Tinubu’s electoral strength.

In the statement signed by its Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, the group maintained that abandoning the Muslim-Muslim ticket would ultimately benefit opposition parties in the 2027 elections.

“There is serious danger in changing a winning ticket. We totally and unequivocally reject calls and plans to drop Vice President Kashim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate in the next election.

“We sincerely advise that President Bola Tinubu and leaders of the party should not listen to such calls because such a decision will turn out to be a grievous political miscalculation,” the Forum said.

Alleging that those behind the calls do not have the party’s best interest at heart, the Forum warned, “They don’t want to see President Bola Tinubu reelected, that is the only reason anybody who has political knowledge could make such a request.”

Examining voting patterns in the North and insisting that Tinubu would not gain new votes by replacing Shettima, the Forum warned that removing him on religious grounds would result in the President losing support and votes in the region.

It noted that if the opposition coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC) selects Peter Obi as its presidential candidate, dropping Shettima would make no strategic difference, as most minorities in the North would still vote for Obi, regardless of who replaces Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate.

The Forum therefore urged Tinubu to maintain the status quo and retain Shettima as his running mate to secure victory in the 2027 election, while arguing that those calling for a change did not vote for Tinubu in 2023 and would still not support him in 2027, even if Shettima was dropped.

“Those who are calling on President Bola Tinubu to change Vice President Kashim Shettima, basing their position on the Muslim-Muslim ticket, if you check, you will notice that in 2023, most of their communities voted for Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

“Now, if Peter Obi is to come out again in 2027 for ADC, what is the guarantee that they will vote for Tinubu even if he drops Shettima and replaces him with a Christian. Does it mean that these people will now leave Peter Obi and vote for Tinubu? That is not going to happen.

“What is likely to happen in such a situation is that Tinubu will lose support among core northerners, thereby reducing his votes and giving the advantage to Peter Obi. Basic political calculation shows that dropping Shettima makes no sense and is actually very dangerous.

“We don’t see any reason President Tinubu should listen to those who are asking him to change Shettima. These people did not contribute to his victory in 2023; they were not with him.

“Tinubu should ignore them and go ahead with Vice President Shettima because those who will vote for him will vote for him. But he will be driving many of his voters away if he changes Shettima.”

The Forum also emphasized that there are also suggestions that the international community, particularly the United States and other Western powers, may be uncomfortable with the APC Muslim-Muslim ticket and could push for its alteration in 2027, especially against the backdrop of allegations of Christian genocide in Nigeria.

It, however, maintained that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and must not bow to foreign influence.

“The Muslim-Muslim ticket gave us victory in 2023. Nigeria is an independent nation, and nobody is going to dictate to us,” the Forum noted, warning that any form of external interference could derail Nigeria’s democratic process and plunge the country into avoidable conflict.

Rivers Chief Judge declines Assembly’s impeachment request over court orders

The Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Chibuzor Simeon Amadi, has responded to a request from the Rivers State House of Assembly to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

The Chief Judge, in a leaked letter, said he was legally restrained from acting on the request because of subsisting interim injunctions issued by the High Court on 16 January 2026 in two separate suits filed by the governor and his deputy.

The court orders barred the chief judge from receiving, processing, considering, or acting on any impeachment-related request or communication from the House of Assembly pending further determination of the cases.

Amadi, in the letter, said he was listed as the 32nd defendant in the suits and that the interim court orders were duly served on his office.

He harped on the supremacy of constitutionalism and the rule of law, insisting that all authorities were bound to obey court orders until they were set aside.

The chief judge acknowledged that the House of Assembly and the Speaker were already at the Court of Appeal challenging the order.

He said he would only act on the requests if the orders of the court were vacated.
