Police arrest eight suspects in bush combing operation in Kogi

The Police Command in Kogi says eight suspected criminals have been arrested in a joint bush combing operation by security operatives in the state.

A statement signed by the command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat, on Friday in Lokoja, said that the operation was a resolve to deny criminal elements any safe haven in Kogi.

She said that the coordinated bush-combing operations across various parts of the state were carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, local hunters, and vigilante groups.

Afusat said that in the course of the operation, eight suspects were arrested at different points for questioning in connection with suspected criminal activities.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that some of the suspects are believed to be informants aiding kidnapping syndicates operating within the area.

“The suspects are currently in custody, and thorough investigations are ongoing, after which appropriate legal action will be taken based on the outcome of investigations,” she said.

According to her, the operation forms part of continuous, intelligence-led security measures routinely conducted across different locations in Kogi to proactively detect, disrupt, and dismantle criminal networks.

She explained that the exercise involved thorough combing of identified forested and remote areas suspected to be vulnerable to criminal exploitation.

Afusat added, “Ground operations were effectively complemented with aerial surveillance, providing enhanced situational awareness, tracking of suspicious movements, and the identification of concealed criminal hideouts.

“In line with this strategy, discovered bandit camps and hideouts were neutralised to prevent reuse and deny criminal elements any operational comfort.”

She quoted the state police commissioner, Mr Naziru Kankarofi, as assuring the good people of Kogi of the command’s firm control of the security situation and its unwavering resolve to protect lives and property.

Kankarofi urged members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious activity through the command’s Control Room emergency lines: 07038329084 and 08152195982.

  • Coalition of northern groups condemns deadly attacks in Kwara, Katsina

Coalition of northern groups condemns deadly attacks in Kwara, Katsina

    • …calls for urgent security reforms

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned the deadly terrorist attacks carried out between 3 and 4 February 2026 in Woro and Nuku communities of Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State.

The Coalition also condemned another grave attack in Katsina State, where over 20 people were killed by suspected bandits in Doma community, Tafoki Ward of Faskari Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG said credible reports from local authorities and community sources indicate that scores of residents were killed in the Kwara attacks, with casualty figures running into over 100, while many others sustained serious injuries.

According to the statement, homes, shops and farmlands were destroyed during the attacks, forcing survivors, mostly women, children and the elderly, to flee their communities in fear for their lives.

Charanchi said: “The attackers reportedly stormed the community in a coordinated assault, unleashing violence on residents, destroying homes, and forcing survivors to flee, once again exposing the persistent vulnerability of rural communities to armed criminal groups.

“The Coalition extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those brutally murdered in this senseless attack. We also express our heartfelt sympathy to the injured and to all residents who have been displaced and traumatised by this act of terror.

“The pain, grief and insecurity inflicted on these communities are unacceptable and must not be normalised. The people and communities, like all Nigerians, have the fundamental right to live in safety and dignity.

“The scale and brutality of this attack highlight the growing threat of terrorism and banditry spreading, and expose the dangerous gaps in the country’s security architecture, particularly in rural and border communities”.

The CNG calls on the Federal Government to ensure speedy widespread recruitment and training of the Forest Guards to complement security forces across the frontline areas.

The Coalition finally called on Nigerians to remain united, resilient and peaceful in the face of provocation, while urging leaders at all levels to rise to the gravity of the moment.

He stressed that the protection of citizens remains the primary responsibility of the government.

Charanchi said: “We welcome the approach as we believe those guards that would be drawn from the communities would be instrumental in combating terrorists and bandits in every nooks and crannies of our communities.

“While the Coalition acknowledges the sacrifices and efforts of security personnel on the front lines, the persistence of such deadly attacks shows that current responses remain inadequate.

“There is an urgent need for a more decisive, intelligence-driven and people-centred security strategy that prioritises the protection of lives over reactive damage control.

“The CNG therefore renews its call on the Federal Government and the Kwara State Government to take immediate and concrete steps to secure vulnerable communities, strengthen intelligence gathering, improve early warning systems, and ensure visible security presence in high-risk areas”.

He urge the authorities to provide timely relief, medical care and other support for victims and displaced families, while ensuring that those responsible for this atrocity are swiftly identified and brought to justice.

“Beyond immediate security measures, this tragedy underscores the need to confront the deeper drivers of insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, social exclusion and governance failures that allow violent groups to thrive,“ the added.

‘I’m sick, homeless’ – Actor Okemesi begs for help

Actor Bamidele Tope Saint, popularly known as Okemesi, has pleaded for help over alleged spiritual attack that left him homeless and paralysed.

In an interview with colleague Tony Montana, Okemesi revealed he has been suffering for almost a year, with his condition worsening despite medical treatment.

According to Okemesi, the attack began with a severe illness that left him crippled and unable to speak or stand.

After seeking medical attention at a Hospital, Okemesi said his condition persisted, prompting him to visit an Islamic cleric for spiritual assistance.

He attributed prayers and spiritual intervention for his gradual recovery.

Appealing fans for support, particularly, accomodation, Okemesi said he is now facing homelessness, relying on church premises for shelter, and struggling to meet basic needs.

Okemesi said, “It was a spiritual attack. May God protect us from spiritual arrows. I was taken to a Hospital, and people donated to foot my bills. But we realised it was beyond the hospital when my condition worsened. That was when the people with me searched for my relatives’ numbers on my phone.

“My senior brother in Osogbo asked them to bring me to him. He picked me up from the motor park and took me directly to an Islamic cleric for a solution. It was a serious attack. I became crippled. It was the prayers from people and God’s miracles that revived me. I couldn’t talk or stand. I began to walk with crutches a few hours after the Alfa gave me some spiritual items to use the same day I arrived.

“My brother was also attacked after I left the cleric’s place to stay with him for proper care. He was involved in an accident and also had a marital crisis with his wife. I had to leave his place and started staying on church premises. I don’t have a place to sleep, I don’t have anything. In fact, it’s difficult to feed. My fans, you are the only thing left for me. Please, I need your help to get back on my feet, especially with accommodation,” he stated.

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has expressed hs administration’s readiness to partner with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) to build a 10,000 barrel-per-day condensate refinery in the state.

It was in 2019 that the NNPCL first announced its decision to establish a condensate refinery that to specifically produce Premium Motor Spirit, also known as petrol.

He said his administration would provide land, Certificates of Occupancy (C of O), security, and all other necessary logistics to facilitate the project.

Alhaji Mumuni described the condensate refinery as a sustainable project aimed not only at revenue generation but also at job creation, industrial growth, and the overall development of Edo State.

The Chief Downstream Investment Officer at NNPC, Mr. Ikedichi Dick-Nwoke, said the refinery would position Edo State as a major energy and industrial hub in the South-South region.

He added that the project would boost investor confidence, align with Governor Okpebholo’s industrialization agenda, and significantly expand employment opportunities for Edo residents.

  • New remuneration for political office holders ready, says RMAFC

New remuneration for political office holders ready, says RMAFC

The Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), said on Thursday that it has finalised work on a new remuneration for political office others in the country  which it has submitted to the President through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Chairman of the Commission, Mohammed Bello Shehu who disclosed this at a budget defence of the agency before the House Committee on Finance  said the new proposal which is for Ministers and political office holders will soon be forwarded to the National Assembly by the President.

He said the agency is also working on “vertical, horizontal revenue sharing formula. We are also on that. We will conclude this year”

Shehu who gave update on the ongoing review of revenue allocation formula for the three tiers of government as well as remuneration for political office holders, saying: “very soon we will conclude. We have done everything. We have concluded. We are just about to finish analyzing the data and bring it before you.”

He said “We hope that very soon this will be transmitted to you so that it becomes law. Of course, your own doesn’t require any legislation. It’s for Ministers and others”.

He expressed concern over the interferance of state governments in the fiscal governance of the Local Government Areas over the years, saying “the Commission would like to establish a Local Government Committee now like we used to do before the Supreme Court said we were busy bodies. Now we will monitor every single Local Government in Nigeria.

“I’m glad that Mr. President spoke to the Governors himself, that if you don’t allow this then I will issue an Executive Order. So, the Commission is fully in support of Mr. President over this course.

“The crisis we are having in Nigeria today is lack of functionality of Local Governments and every single one of us knows this. Even under the military the Local Governments will perform much more better. So I thank you profoundly sir, it’s your committee that initiated this.

“Three years ago when we came we were telling you, you (Faleke) said chairman you can handle this and you guided me and I followed your advice and the rest is a success so we are grateful to this also.”

“I sincerely thank this committee for what you have done to Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. You have brought us out. We are now being respected by almost all the revenue generating agencies in Nigeria.

“Even before we knock now, they are knocking at our doors, having discussions with us and some of the issues that have been over the years are being addressed by some of these revenue generating agencies, whether it is the Nigerian Customs, NUPRC and other agencies.

“So I thank you profoundly and I think you have done a great service to Nigeria and this is just the beginning. I will now go to the document before you.”

Shehu hinted the lawmakers that the agency was carrying out an audit of the nation’s oil assets in the Niger Delta.

He said: “what you have done to us and to Nigeria, your name will go down in gold, sir. We are being respected by all revenue generating agencies. Anywhere we go now, everybody is like shivering trying to really identify with us.

“For the first time, like the verification that we are doing of oil wells all across the Niger Delta region has never been done. The equipment that we have, not even new precursors. No Governor now will say, when you come to my state, you have to beg me where even we are going to stay, provide vehicles and things like that. Now we can do that, sir. My people, sir, spent three to four months in the field.

“Some of them went to the creek water up to here, sir, to identify those oil assets that we have in Nigeria. And by the time we finish, sir, when Mr. President receives this report, this country will shake, sir. And I’m not making it up. I have provided you with an internal report, but I don’t want to let the cart out of the bag, sir. So this is remarkable, sir.”

“The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the violent attack that occurred on Tuesday, 3rd February, 2026, in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, which has sadly resulted in the confirmed death of seventy-five persons”.

He stated that the IGP extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and people of Kwara State.

Egbetokun reassured the public that the police remained steadfast in its responsibility to protect lives and property.

He said, “The IGP reassures the public that the Nigeria Police Force will continue to do everything necessary to guarantee the safety and security of all citizens”.

He explained that the deployment of tactical, operational, and intelligence assets to Kaiama and surrounding communities was aimed at restoring calm, strengthening security presence, and preventing further acts of violence.

Hundeyin disclosed that the Force had launched an intensive manhunt for the perpetrators and all individuals connected to the crime.

  • NRS chairman Adedeji urges shift from raw materials to innovation for economic growth

NRS chairman Adedeji urges shift from raw materials to innovation for economic growth

The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Adedeji, has called for an urgent move away from Nigeria’s reliance on raw material exports, advocating for a focus on ideas, innovation, and the production of complex goods as a pathway to sustainable economic growth and national prosperity.

Delivering the maiden Distinguished Personality Lecture of the Faculty of Administration at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, on the theme “From Potential to Prosperity: Export-led Economy,” Adedeji stressed the need to rethink growth through the lens of complexity, rather than merely increasing the production of existing goods.

He noted that while Nigeria possesses a high-tech oil sector, its informal sector remains low in productivity, and the country lacks a vibrant, labor-absorbing industrial base that could serve as a bridge to higher economic complexity.

Adedeji also highlighted that Nigeria experienced stagnation in exports for three decades, from 1998 to 2023, adding only six new products to its export basket between 2008 and 2023.

“Because of our current position, the Harvard Atlas concluded that we are positioned to take advantage of very few opportunities to diversify using what we already know.”

Adedeji urged Nigeria to learn from the world by comparative study of success and failure like Vietnam, Bangladesh, Indonesia, South Africa and Brazil.

He said, “When we put these stories together, the divergence is clear. Vietnam used global trade to build a resilient, complex economy, while the others

remained dependent on natural resources or a single low-tech niche.

“There are three big lessons here for us in Nigeria as we think about our roadmap. First, avoiding the resource curse is necessary, but it’s not enough. You need a proactive strategy to build productive capabilities.

“Vietnam’s success came from integrating itself into Global Value Chains (GVCs). They positioned themselves as the assembly hub for the world’s electronics, importing high-tech parts and exporting finished products. This allowed them to “borrow” technology and management skills from abroad to build their own know-how.

“Nigeria, on the other hand, remains a supplier of raw materials to these chains, not an active participant within them. We must realise that productive capabilities are not permanent. The examples of South Africa and Brazil show us that you can actually lose your industrial edge if you aren’t careful. Over-reliance on the easy path of resource extraction creates economic and political incentives that crowd out the difficult, long-term work of building an industrial base.”

He added that for Nigeria, which is at an even earlier stage of development and even less diversified than these nations, the warning is stark.

“Relying solely on our natural endowments isn’t just a path to stagnation; it’s a path to regression. The global economy increasingly rewards knowledge and complexity, not just what you can dig out of the ground. If we want to move from potential to prosperity, we must stop being just a source of raw materials and start being a source of ideas, innovation, and complex products.”

Adedeji said, “President Tinubu has already begun the difficult work of rebuilding our economy. The goal now must be to transform Nigeria into a nation that possesses the collective knowledge to produce, innovate and compete.”
