The President encouraged AbdulRazaq to continue providing dividends of good governance to the people of Kwara, while wishing him good health, strength and wisdom as he continues to serve the state and the nation.

NBMA moves to regulate GMOs for environmental safety

The Director-General and CEO of the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Bello Bawa Bwari, has reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to regulating modern biotechnology, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and emerging biotechnologies in Nigeria to safeguard human and animal health, as well as the environment.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Bwari emphasized that NBMA was established to provide a comprehensive legal and institutional framework for the management and oversight of biotechnology in the country. He noted that biotechnology is a rapidly evolving scientific field that demands rigorous, science-based regulation to ensure that innovation does not compromise safety.

He said, “The NBMA is not a research institution but a regulatory agency,  the Agency’s role is to assess risks, enforce compliance, and ensure that all biotechnology-related activities are conducted in line with national legislation and internationally recognised standards.

“The agency is to also comply with  relevant international protocols and conventions guiding biosafety and biotechnology, particularly in relation to the movement, handling, storage, and use of regulated biological materials. These are critical to supporting safe food production, food security, and food sovereignty, while protecting the environment and public health”.

The idea behind this briefing is to address

misconceptions, misinformation, and misleading narratives surrounding biotechnology and GMOs. He stressed that the media plays a crucial role in public enlightenment and must be adequately informed to report accurately, responsibly, and based on facts and scientific evidence.

“Nigeria comes first before any interest. Our responsibility is to act in the public interest at all times. We are committed to doing our work diligently, transparently, and in accordance with the law. NBMA operates an open-door policy, and any information required by the public will be made available within the ambit of the law”.

He reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and continuous engagement with stakeholders, noting that public trust remains central to effective biosafety regulation in Nigeria.

Police arrest seven over cryptocurrency fraud

The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCC) has arrested seven suspects in connection with a scam center, which specialized in cryptocurrency fraud.

The arrested suspects are Collins Ogwuorie, Christian Ogwuorie, Gbenoba Emmanuel, Samuel Olufemi, Collins Victor, Onyeka Emenem, and Kefas Ogunbor. Preliminary investigation revealed that the syndicate operated a sophisticated online fraud network led by Collins Ogwuorie, a Nigerian national with a history of online criminal deception.

The arrests were aided by the UK National Crime Agency (NCA) and insights shared by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, explained that investigation revealed the activities of an online investment scam center operating in Agbor, Delta State, where the suspects utilized fake social media accounts to impersonate reputable cryptocurrency traders, targeting unsuspecting individuals who interact with supposedly legitimate investment platforms.

According to him, “The leaders of this network expanded operations by recruiting and training young individuals in retirement investment fraud techniques and distribution of phishing attacks targeting victims from the United States of America based in the United Kingdom along with U.K. residents.”

The Force PRO revealed that further investigations showed that Ogwuorie procured approximately 500 social media accounts from online vendors and distributed them among his recruits for coordinated spamming, impersonation, and victim engagement.

The two Ogwuories were assigned various operational roles, including account management, online engagement, and mass spamming.

The syndicate also operated a fraudulent Facebook group titled “Retirement Strategies: Real Estate And Market Insights,” where fabricated testimonials were posted to lure victims into making financial investments.

The police added that during the operation, detectives from the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center recovered 26 mobile phones, 42 SIM cards, and one laptop, all suspected to have been used in the commission of the crime.

However, the Police spokesman added that investigations were still ongoing as members of the public were advised to exercise caution when engaging in online investment opportunities and to verify the authenticity of platforms before committing funds.

  • National Assembly committee to harmonise reworked Electoral Act Bill

National Assembly committee to harmonise reworked Electoral Act Bill

The Senate and the House of Representatives have constituted conference committees to harmonise the differing versions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill passed by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the constitution of the Senate conference committee on Wednesday shortly after the red chamber passed its version of the Bill.

The committee is expected to reconcile areas of disagreement with the version earlier approved by the House of Representatives.

According to Akpabio, the Senate committee will be chaired by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Senator Simon Lalong, with Senators Adamu Aliero, Adeniyi Adegbomire, Orji Uzor Kalu, Abba Moro, Asuquo Ekpeyong, Aminu Abbas and Tokunbo Abiru as members.

He said the committee has been mandated to conclude its assignment within the month to enable the National Assembly transmit a harmonised bill to the President for assent, as attention shifts to the final shape of Nigeria’s electoral framework ahead of future elections.

On its part, the House of Representatives also announced the constitution of its own conference committee to work with the Senate team in harmonising the Bill ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The House had passed the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill on December 23, 2025, while the Senate approved its version on Wednesday with significant changes.

Key among the amendments by the Senate is the reduction of the period for the issuance of the electoral timetable from 360 days to 180 days.

Another major point of divergence is electronic transmission of election results.

While the House approved electronic transmission of results from polling units to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV) in real time and simultaneously with physical collation, the Senate rejected the provision, opting to retain the 2022 framework which allows the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the mode of transmission.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the spokesman of the House, Akintunde Rotimi, said the conference committee was constituted in line with legislative procedure to harmonise areas of difference between the versions of the Bill passed by both chambers.

According to him, the decision was conveyed in an internal correspondence dated Wednesday, February 4, 2026, signed by the Clerk to the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, acting on the directive of the House leadership.

Members of the House committee, led by the Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Adebayo Balogun (South West), include Fred Agbedi (South South), Sada Soli (North West), Ahmadu Jaha (North East), Iduma Igariwey Enwo (South East), Saidu Musa Abdullahi (North Central) and Zainab Gimba, representing women.

Rotimi said, “The committee is mandated to confer with its counterpart from the Senate with a view to harmonising the differing provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill as passed by both Chambers, ahead of final passage by the National Assembly.”

He added, “The House of Representatives reiterates its commitment to advancing electoral reforms that strengthen transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.”

25m Nigerians to benefit as Tinubu expands women’s economic programme

    • …FG rolls out Happy Woman App to connect women to finance, markets, skills, services

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expanded the Nigeria for Women Programme to reach 25 million beneficiaries nationwide, unveiling a digital platform designed to connect women to finance, skills, markets, essential services and government support.

The programme, now known as the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up (NFWP-SU), was launched on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, with the President represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Tinubu said Nigeria could not achieve sustainable growth without placing women at the centre of national planning, describing the scale-up as a key pillar of his administration’s social and economic inclusion agenda.

In a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Tinubu said “a nation that relegates its women is a nation bound for implosion. We have long understood this truth”.

“That is why this administration has not only placed women at the forefront of decision-making but has also entrusted them with leadership in causes that redeem our national promise. Today stands as proof of that commitment”, the President said.

The expanded initiative follows a pilot phase in six states which, according to the Presidency, reached over one million beneficiaries.

With the national scale-up, government introduced the Happy Woman App Platform, described as a secure digital interface that links women to empowerment opportunities, including finance, skills training, market access, protection services and social support.

The programme is headed by Dr. Hadiza Maina and is co-financed by the World Bank alongside the Federal Government and participating state governments.

It is designed to strengthen women’s economic empowerment, financial inclusion and social development nationwide.

Tinubu said the administration had set a “bold but achievable national ambition” of reaching 25 million Nigerian women through the programme, while calling on the World Bank to strengthen its financing, technical support and innovation partnerships to sustain the scale-up.

“Digital inclusion is no longer optional; it is foundational to effective service delivery and national competitiveness,” he said.

In a related policy announcement, the President designated 2026 as the “Year of Social Development and Families in Nigeria,” directing coordinated action across all levels of government.

The declaration, the Presidency said, followed a Memorandum of Understanding signed during Tinubu’s January official visit to Türkiye, aimed at strengthening family cohesion and social welfare systems.

The President commended the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for integrating technology into policy implementation and for reorganising social development into a more coherent system since the launch of the Renewed Hope Social Impact Intervention in Lafia last year.

He also praised state governors and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum for aligning federal vision with state-level execution, stressing that “national transformation succeeds when all levels of government move with shared purpose.”

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, described the initiative as a major shift in Nigeria’s governance framework.

“Today is a structural signal for Nigerian women, children, and families,” she said.

“It is a signal that under your leadership, women are no longer treated as beneficiaries at the margins of development, but as primary drivers of Nigeria’s economic, social, and democratic stability.”

The minister said the programme builds on the achievements of Phase I of the Nigeria for Women Project in six states, disclosing that 26,577 Women Affinity Groups were formed with over 560,000 members.

She added that participants recorded significant financial progress.

“Through the Women Affinity Groups formed, they collectively saved over ₦4.9 billion of their own money and have inter-loaned significantly to expand their businesses, cover health costs, and pay school fees,” she said.

Ibrahim described the new phase as a major continental investment in women’s empowerment, noting that it is a $540 million programme co-financed by the World Bank and the Federal and State Governments.

According to her, the initiative is designed to directly reach at least five million women across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, while supporting national priorities such as job creation, food security, rural revitalisation and financial inclusion.

She also said the programme had strengthened civic identity among women beneficiaries.

“In Niger State for instance, during programme rollout, many women, for the first time in their lives, obtained formal identification in order to participate,” she said.

“The fastest and most accessible ID available to them was the voter card.”

She added that the newly registered women “became politically visible.”

On the digital rollout, the minister announced that the Happy Woman App would serve as a central hub for women’s empowerment.

“This platform will aggregate access to programmes, finance opportunities, skills training, protection services, and market linkages. Our target is 10 million verified women registrations within the next ten months,” she said.

Also speaking, the World Bank Regional Representative for Africa, Mr. Robert Chase, said the project was designed by the bank’s Social Policy Department to place women at the centre of development, stressing that investing in women remains the most impactful investment any nation can make.

Director of the Nigeria Country Office of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Uche Amaonwu, said empowering women directly translates to healthier families and safer communities, noting that women’s empowerment significantly reduces disease and insecurity at the household level.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, expressed his ministry’s readiness to collaborate on women-focused empowerment initiatives across the country.

Representative of the Senate President, Senator Ireti Kingibe, said the scale-up reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the needs of women, adding that the National Assembly would continue to enact legislation to expand women’s access to governance and economic resources.

Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the Deputy Governor of Katsina State, Malam Faruk Jobe, reaffirmed the commitment of state governments to providing counterpart funding for successful implementation of women-focused projects.

He disclosed that Katsina State, a participating state in the project, had earmarked ₦4 billion in its current budget to support the initiative.

Customs–NDLEA foil N4.7b drug shipment at Lagos seaport

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have foiled a N4.7 billion drug shipment at Lagos’ Tin Can Island Port, intercepting a 40-foot container used to smuggle 2,366 packs of cannabis indica through the nation’s busiest maritime trade corridor.

The consignment, concealed inside three used vehicles, the Customs command said yesterday in a statement by its spokesperson, Oscar Ivara, was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), following a joint, intelligence-led examination that also uncovered a Colt MK IV .45 calibre pistol with an empty magazine.

The seizure, he said, highlights how criminal networks attempt to exploit legitimate import channels, raising costs for compliant shippers and reinforcing the need for tighter port surveillance.

The Command’s Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, said the interception followed coordinated profiling and examination carried out on January 28 with NDLEA and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives.

“Today, we inform you of developments in securing our borders, aligning with the 2026 International Customs Day theme of vigilance and commitment,” Onyeka said.

According to him, officers discovered the drugs packed in 55 jumbo bags inside the container, which had been deliberately masked with used vehicles—a Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota Matrix, to evade detection.

“A 40-foot container was found to contain 2,366 packs in 55 jumbo bags of cannabis indica,” he said.

Onyeka added that the operation reflects a shift toward risk-based enforcement at the ports, where intelligence and inter-agency collaboration are increasingly central to safeguarding trade flows and public safety.

“Interestingly, we apprehended one suspect in connection with the seizure,” he said, warning the Service would not tolerate drug smuggling or any form of transnational crime that threatens national security and public health.

Receiving the consignment, NDLEA Commander, Tin Can Island, Solomon Omotoso, praised the collaboration, noting its importance to maintaining the credibility of Nigeria’s seaports.

He assured that the agency would pursue comprehensive investigations and diligently prosecute all those involved in line with the provisions of the law.

  • Entourage deepens SME support as demand for accessible finance rises

Entourage deepens SME support as demand for accessible finance rises

Entourage Integrated Trust Limited has strengthened its support for small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) across the country, as demand for flexible and accessible financing continues to rise within Nigeria’s evolving economic environment.

The financial institution said it recorded a notable surge in engagement over the past year from entrepreneurs, traders, and business owners seeking practical funding solutions tailored to the realities of local business operations.

According to the company, this trend reflects a growing preference for credit models aligned with daily, weekly, and seasonal business cycles rather than rigid lending structures.

Entourage disclosed that it currently supports over 300,000 entrepreneurs and business operators nationwide, a reach largely driven by increasing SME demand for accessible credit, repeat patronage, and referrals within local markets.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Seyi Asagun, said the organisation’s priority remains expanding its impact rather than merely increasing its size.

“Our focus has never been on size for its own sake. What matters is reach, how many businesses we can support, how many livelihoods we can stabilise and how many entrepreneurs can continue operating with confidence,” he said.

With operations now spanning 29 states, the institution has expanded its field network, branch activities and internal systems to improve access to finance in both urban centres and grassroots communities.

The company noted that its model combines on-ground relationship management with structured credit processes, enabling it to serve traders, SMEs and professionals across diverse sectors.

The firm also reported increased repeat engagement from clients, describing it as a sign that business owners are deriving long-term value from its financing solutions rather than relying on one-off borrowing.

Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Philip Nkafuonye, said the company’s expansion has been intentional and supported by capacity development.

“As demand has grown, we have strengthened our internal systems, trained our teams, and improved service delivery across regions.

Growth is only meaningful when service quality keeps pace,” he said.

Entourage’s expansion comes amid persistent concerns over limited access to finance for Nigerian SMEs, widely regarded as a major constraint to business growth.

The institution said its focus on flexible repayment structures, customer engagement, and ethical lending aligns with efforts to bridge the country’s SME funding gap.

Looking ahead, the company plans to consolidate its presence in existing markets while extending support to underserved business communities, in line with its commitment to inclusive economic growth.

Entourage Integrated Trust Limited is a Nigerian financial institution providing flexible financial services to individuals and SMEs. Operating across 29 states, the company focuses on promoting sustainable business growth through ethical lending, strong customer relationships, and practical financial solutions tailored to business needs.

‘Money isn’t everything’ – Timini Egbuson opens up on past relationship

Actor and filmmaker Timini Egbuson has shared a candid reflection on love, money, and relationships, revealing a shift in his perspective.

In a recent interview with Jay On-Air TV, Egbuson admitted that while he once prioritised financial stability, he now believes emotional presence and communication are equally crucial.

“I still think money is important, but what I realise now is that money is just one out of many things that matter. If all you can bring to a relationship is money, then you’re a very shallow man,” Egbuson said, emphasising the importance of being present and engaged in relationships.

The actor’s comments come from personal experience, as he acknowledged that communication was a major issue in his past relationship.

  • Julius, Eddy Pondi Foundation award ₦10m scholarship to 100 students

Julius, Eddy Pondi Foundation award ₦10m scholarship to 100 students

In a political climate often defined by short-term gestures, a member of the House of Representatives, Julius Gbabojor Pondi’s approach to representation has taken a more deliberate path, one anchored in education and sustained through institutional partnership with the Eddy Pondi Foundation.

That approach is made evident with the recent disbursement of a ₦10 million scholarship scheme supporting 100 students across Delta State.

The programme, implemented by the Eddy Pondi Foundation, draws beneficiaries from Burutu, Warri South West, and Uvwie Local Government Areas, each receiving ₦100,000 after a structured and transparent selection process.

Unlike many interventions that end at disbursement, the scholarship is designed as a long-term commitment. Beneficiaries will continue to receive the ₦100,000 award annually for the duration of their first degree programmes, subject to the Foundation’s guidelines.

In an era of rising tuition costs and increasing dropout rates, the assurance of sustained support offers more than financial relief. It provides academic stability and confidence.

For many of the students, the scholarship represents trust as much as assistance. It affirms education as a credible route to opportunity and signals that academic effort is recognised and rewarded.

This focus on human capacity development reflects the core philosophy of the Eddy Pondi Foundation, which positions education as a tool for social mobility and community resilience.

The current scheme is part of a broader education agenda advanced by Julius Pondi.

The lawmaker is currently enrolling 400 students from Burutu Federal Constituency, and the Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West Local Government Area, who are also being sponsored for JAMB enrolment ahead of the 2026 examination cycle.

By removing early financial barriers, the initiative widens access to university education at a critical entry point.

The Sologha Ekpemupolo JAMB CBT Centre in Ogulagha, a brainchild of Pondi’s legislative acumen, now provides students in riverine communities with closer, safer access to examination facilities.

For many families, this has reduced the cost, risk, and disruption associated with long-distance travel for national examinations.

While education remains central, the initiative reflects a wider understanding of representation as a lived experience.

The collaborative efforts between Julius Pondi and the Eddy Pondi Foundation demonstrate a sustained investment in people and institutions.

For students, families, and communities across the constituency, the impact is tangible.

More importantly, it reinforces a simple idea that effective representation begins with deliberate attention to human potential and that education remains one of its most enduring foundations.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently meeting with the Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, at the State House, Abuja, following the deadly attack on Worro community in Kaiama council area of the state.

The meeting is coming barely two days after more than 160 people were reported killed in the rural settlement in an assault authorities have linked to suspected jihadist fighters.

Sources at the State House said the engagement is part of ongoing consultations on the security situation in Kwara and the immediate federal response to the killings.

On Wednesday, Tinubu ordered the deployment of an army battalion to Kaiama and approved the establishment of a new military command to spearhead Operation Savannah Shield, aimed at flushing out the attackers and securing vulnerable communities.
