Tinubu rejoices with Abegunde on birthday, hails loyalty, service

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rejoiced with Hon. Ifedayo Abegunde, popularly known as Abena, a longtime political associate and seasoned public servant, on the occasion of his birthday, celebrated on January 9.

In a congratulatory message on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extolled Abegunde’s enduring commitment to professionalism, loyalty, and service to the public good, describing him as a dependable associate whose political journey has been marked by consistency and steadfastness.

Abegunde, a trained civil engineer who later pursued architectural studies, ventured into public service through elective politics and was elected twice to the House of Representatives, where he represented Akure North/Akure South Federal Constituency of Ondo State.

He also served as Secretary to the Ondo State Government, a role in which he was credited with administrative diligence and dedication.

Abegunde serves as Executive Director, Corporate Services, at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) where President Tinubu noted that his experience in governance and public administration continues to be brought to bear.

The President highlighted Abegunde’s strong grassroots appeal and his reputation for professionalism, noting that his political career has witnessed “both triumphs and travails,” largely due to his loyalty to leadership and insistence on advancing the public interest.

Beyond Nigeria’s shores, Abegunde also distinguished himself professionally in the United States, serving as a Systems Engineer for the State of Maryland and the United States Patent and Trademark Office, an experience the President said underscored his versatility and global exposure.

“In politics, Abegunde’s dedication to public service and good governance has always been evident. As an associate, he remained loyal, consistent and steadfast at all times,” President Tinubu said.

He prayed for the celebrant’s continued good health and longevity, wishing him “long life and more years of purposeful service to the nation.”

Bandit Attack: Ashipa of Ogbomosoland calls for vigilance, intelligence sharing

The Ashipa of Ogbomosoland Barr. Olusegun Adekunle has called for heightened vigilance, intelligence sharing and community ownership of security following bandit attack on park rangers at Oloka Village, near the Old Oyo National Park.

He described the attack as painful and disturbing, noting that the rangers were killed while carrying out their lawful duties, an incident that has unsettled Ogbomosoland and neighbouring communities.

A statement by Adekunle said the attack has once again exposed persistent security challenges confronting communities around the Old Oyo National Park axis, an area that has witnessed recurrent security threats due to its vast forest reserves and porous boundaries.

He observed that security presence and surveillance have improved in the area since the incident.

He commended security agencies, saying despite operating under hazardous conditions, they continue to make sacrifices to protect lives and property, and therefore deserve greater public support, cooperation and timely intelligence to enhance their effectiveness.

He stressed that security must be seen as a collective responsibility, urging residents to remained vigilant, share credible intelligence promptly and shun any act that could aid criminal elements.

Situating the incident within the broader South-West security architecture, Adekunle noted that the attack underscored the importance of the regional security fund established by South-West governors to strengthen intelligence, logistics and coordinated responses across state boundaries.

According to him, sustained funding and transparent utilisation of the initiative remain critical to tackling emerging threats, particularly in border communities.

He also highlighted the role of the South-West Development Commission (SWDC) in complementing security efforts at the grassroots, stressing that enhanced community-level security is fundamental to boosting economic activities, particularly farming, which remained the backbone of many rural communities in Ogbomosoland and its environs.

He said Ogbomosoland occupies strategic position as it shares a border with Kwara State, from where a series of security-related incidents have been reported in recent times, making cross-border collaboration and intelligence sharing imperative to curbing criminal movements.

Adekunle further praised traditional rulers across the five local government areas of Ogbomosoland for their stabilising roles, calling for stronger collaboration among them to mobilise communities, deepen grassroots intelligence and promote peace.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the park rangers and divine comfort for their families, describing the fallen officers as heroes whose sacrifices should inspire unity and collective action against insecurity in the zone.

  • Lagos Assembly urges Sanwo -Olu to seal Yard 158 events centre

Lagos Assembly urges Sanwo -Olu to seal Yard 158 events centre

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on Governor Babajide  Sanwo-Olu to direct the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency, (LASCOPA) to seal Yard 158 Events Centre, located in Oregun, Lagos, over the management’s persistent refusal to honour official invites in respect of a pending petition.

This followed a personal explanation raised on the Floor of the House by the Chairman, Committee on Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives,  Abiodun Tobun.

He informed the House that the Committee was considering a petition submitted by Mrs. Nurat Alaba against the management of Yard 158 Events Centre, which has been stalled due to the continued non-appearance of the company despite several invitations from the House and LASCOPA.

According to Tobun, Mrs. Alaba paid ₦3m on January 30, 2025 to secure the venue for an event scheduled for December 21, 2025.

However, due to unforeseen circumstances, she contacted the company the following day, January 30, 2025, to request a change of date to December 20, 2025. She was informed that the company would revert to her.

He further explained that after several follow-up calls over the ensuing weeks, Mrs. Alaba was eventually informed that a 33 per cent cancellation charge would apply.

She agreed to the deduction and requested a refund of the balance.

However, she received no further communication until October 2025 when she visited the company’s premises in person.

She was then informed that the 33 per cent cancellation charge would be calculated not from her ₦3 million deposit but from the full event fee of ₦6.5 million, which she had not paid.

This development prompted her to file a petition with the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Tobun expressed concerns that despite multiple invitations, neither the owner nor any representative of Yard 158 Events Centre has appeared before the Committee.

He added that LASCOPA also wrote several letters to the company, all of which were ignored.

He stated: “This level of disregard will not be accepted or tolerated in Lagos State. As a Committee, we have resolved to bring this matter before the entire House for appropriate action.”

Consequently, Tobun urge Speaker Mudashiru  Obasa, to compel the appearance of the owner of Yard 158 Events Centre before the House to enable the investigation to be concluded and a report submitted.

Supporting the motion, Nureni Akinsanya emphasised the need to uphold the authority of the House, warning that failure to act decisively could set a dangerous precedent that may embolden other businesses to disregard legislative directives.

Also lending his voice, Kehinde Joseph noted that the House conducts petition hearings to restore peace and order in the State, stressing that such acts of defiance undermine this responsibility.

In his contribution, Bonu Solomon called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the management’s decision to disregard the authority of the State Legislature.

The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to forward a clean copy of the House resolution to the appropriate quarters.

  • Nwoko questions validity of Regina’s negative drug test result

Nwoko questions validity of Regina’s negative drug test result

Senator Ned Nwoko has disputed the recent negative drug test result of his estranged wife, Regina Daniels, claiming it is evidence of short-term abstinence rather than genuine sobriety.

In a statement on his official X account, Nwoko’s communication team argued that recovery and accountability require sustained effort and professional support, not just social media posts.

“Temporary abstinence does not erase the underlying challenges that brought this situation to light. Recovery and accountability are not matters for social media posts or public engagement; they require sustained effort, honesty, and a genuine engagement with professional support,” the statement reads.

The statement also questioned the conditions under which the test was conducted, citing earlier assessments from reputable centers in Nigeria and South Africa that showed Daniels tested positive for substances like cocaine and marijuana.

He claimed he tried to support Daniels privately before the matter became public but she denied needing help.

“In contrast, earlier findings of drugs and alcohol use were established through assessments conducted by two independent, reputable centres in Nigeria and South Africa.

“These reports were professionally compiled, formally documented, and will be presented and defended in court, and the centres involved will be subpoenaed to testify to their findings.

“Presenting a later negative result as proof that no prior use occurred is misleading and disingenuous. At best, it reflects abstinence over a period of time. It does not invalidate earlier medical reports, nor does it negate what necessitated intervention in the first place.

“Renaming it does not alter its chemical composition, its risks, or its impact on judgment and stability.

“Moreover, temporary abstinence, whether for weeks or months, does not address the underlying issues that brought this situation to where it is today. Healing is not episodic, and accountability is not performative.”

Nwoko is referencing a court judgment that granted him custody of their children, stating that Daniels should undergo supervised therapy.

“When the court gave judgment in favour of Senator Ned having custody, and dismissed all unsubstantiated human rights abuse claims brought forward last year, the court order stated that Regina should go for supervised therapy with evidence of same.

“We did not make it a time for public show. Senator Ned gave Regina a window to quietly seek the needed help. He acted discreetly, keeping matters out of the media while encouraging access to professional care so she could maintain a meaningful relationship with her children.

“It is therefore inaccurate to suggest consistent sobriety or to dismiss prior findings. A single test, taken at a time of one’s choosing, does not outweigh documented assessments conducted independently and professionally.”

The public feud between the couple started in October 2025, with Daniels accusing Nwoko of domestic violence and coercion, which he denies, attributing the issues to her alleged substance use disorder.

  • Fear over rising abductions in Edo

Fear over rising abductions in Edo

The decisive action of Governor Monday Okpebholo against kidnappers in Edo State has not deterred their activities in the Heartbeat State, reports Osagie Otabor.

It was a sad New Year for Mr. Tahir Momoh. His son, Ibrahim, has been in the kidnappers den since January 2nd, 2026. Ibrahim is a medical doctor on his housemanship at the Edo State Teaching Hospital, Auchi, headquarters of Estako West local government area.

Ibrahim was abducted with brother, Abu, a graduate of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, at their residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, Edo North. Abu was killed by the kidnappers while allegedly attempting to escape. He has since been buried according to Islamic rites.

It was learnt that the kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N200m but reduced it to N100m. Tahir Momoh, who spoke to our reporter on Thursday, said his son, Ibrahim, was yet to be released. He said the kidnappers are still insisting on N100m ransom.

Last month, a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Aifedighi, was abducted from their residence at Ujemen, Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West local government area. The kidnappers demanded N100m ransom which the family coud not raise. However, the wife was beaten to death while the husband was rescued few days later.

Son of the victims, Mike, said the family was shocked the manner their mother was beaten to death. He said his father had been hospitalised since he was rescued.

“My mother was badly beaten. They battered her head. My father has been in the hospital since he came home. Two suspects have been arrested.”

Last August, eight personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), attached to the BUA Cement Factory in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area, were killed by kidnappers.

The slain NSCDC officials were escorting five Chinese expatriates when the kidnappers ambushed them at the company’s entrance.

One Chinese expatriate was abducted by the kidnappers.

On December 11, last year, kidnappers stormed residence of Andrew Ilabeshi at Kalabar Quarters, Afokpella, Estako East local government area. They killed the man and abducted his twins aged 16. The twins were released released on December 26th after payment of N10m.

These are among several other kidnapping cases occurring across Edo state. Last week, students of AAU joined youths in Ekpoma to stage a peaceful protest over incessant kidnappings in the area. The protesters said the demonstration was to draw attention of the government at all levels to the persistent insecurity in the locality.

But spokesman for AAU, Mike Aladenika, said students of the institution did not participate in the protest.

“The University wishes to inform the general public, students, staff, and stakeholders that the organisers of this event are not registered students, members of the University Students’ Union Government, or affiliated with the institution in any capacity.

“The Management condemns any attempts to disrupt the peaceful academic environment and assures that such unauthorised actions will be met with appropriate measures to safeguard the university’s interests and maintain order.”

In Auchi, the Igbira camp area and Igbeh road are said to be notorious for kidnapping activities. What is worrisome to many residents is the presence of military checkpoints at the Igbira camp. Residents is Auchi said contributions were made every Jattu market day for payment of ransom.

“The energy our Governor used to fight cultism is not being used to fight kidnappers. People are selling their houses to pay ransom. Every Jattu market day, they collect money from people to pay ransom. At Igbeh road, you see people begging for money to pay ransom.

“Our Vigilante are not being paid. They cannot go to the bush to face kidnappers with AK47 rifle.”

A Chief in Auchi, kingdom, Chief Duru Yusuf, said payment of ransom by residents was inevitable.

“We are doing our best as a community even though the government says it is doing its best. We are the people feeling tbe heat. People are contributing money to pay ransom. We don’t encourage payment of ransom but sometimes it became inevitable.

“The vigilante are not are not being paid.

They are volunteers. They can only do their best. There are two checkpoints before their Army barracks near the Igbira camp. They have not stopped anything. Government should step up its responsibility so that we can do our business in peace.”

Another leader of Auchi community who gave his name as Abdul urged the police to focus on the Igbira camp due to incessant kidnappings in the area.

He said many persons have been abducted within the vicinity.

“I think it’s time the police beam a searchlight on the Igbira community in Auchi as the number of kidnapping around that area is alarming.

“The problem is these boys don’t want to work but are looking for easy money. The earlier their criminal activities are halted, the better for Auchi and other communities around that area.

“The government should also take action so that the people can see that they are important.”

In November 2025, the Edo State Government analysis of security data

showed a reported 59.4% improvement in security incident rates over previous year, with 2025 recording the lowest incident rate since 2018. It said the data demonstrated effectiveness of strategic investment in security.

Reacting to the increasing kidnapping, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Patrick Ebojele, in a statement, said the incidents would not deminish resolve of the state to sustain and intensify its fight against kidnapping and other crimes.

Ebojele said the existential threat of kidnapping has become a worrisome issue that has taken more than a devoted attention of government.

“But for our intervention and the quality of what we have invested in curbing kidnapping, the spate would have been more alarming than what we presently have.

The Okpebholo-led administration has been relentless in providing solutions to several security challenges; the peaceful and crime-free yuletide celebration is an indication of our commitment to making Edo state safe for all.

“Before the yuletide season, men of the Operation Rescue carried out a holistic bush combing exercise across Auchi, Agenebode, Okpella, Fugar and Owan areas to expose kidnappers’ den. The exercise was not only successful, the number of persons arrested and being prosecuted presently underscored the extent of the exercise. The Operation Rescue team were able to destroy quite a number of hide-outs of these kidnappers aside from the arrest. Some were also killed in the cause of fire power exchanges in the forests. This is to make the point that the government is not resting on its oars, and the initial perennial incidences of kidnapping have been decimated to its lowest ebb. Our deliberate effort to nip the issue in the bud has yielded a lot of successes and we are determined to make Edo safe for all.

“What we expect from members of the Edo public is a show of solidarity and cooperation particularly in the area of intelligence sharing with men of the Operation Rescue and other security agencies. Security concerns are a function of both the government and the people they govern. It is a collective indulgence that should not be left in the hands of the government alone. We feel pained as a government that the kidnappers claimed the life of Dr. Abu Momoh Tahir at a time we thought we had gotten to the safer corridor of our security engagement. We will continue to improve on our effort to make Edo non-habitable for crimes and criminalities as we call on all to be vigilant around their environment at all times. If anyone observes strange movements around their vicinity, appropriate report should be given to the law enforcement agents without delay.”

On his part, Governor Okpebholo said the state was almost a war zone, plagued by cult killings, kidnappings, armed robbery, and cybercrime when he assumed office in 2024.

“We acted decisively, repealed the weak anti-cultism law, passed a stronger one, supplied 60 Hilux vans and 400 motorcycles to security agencies, and recruited and trained 2,500 officers into the Edo State Security Corps. These measures have drastically reduced insecurity. Let it be known: Edo will no longer be a safe place for criminals.”

  • Why Akpabio withdrew N200bn defamation suit against Akpoti-Uduaghan, others, by spokesman

Why Akpabio withdrew N200bn defamation suit against Akpoti-Uduaghan, others, by spokesman

The decision by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to withdraw all the defamation suits he instituted was driven by faith, leadership responsibility and the need to promote national reconciliation, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, has said.

Eyiboh, in an explanatory piece, said the move was neither accidental nor politically expedient, but flowed from a moment of personal conviction and a broader understanding of power, restraint and governance.

According to him, Akpabio took the decision on New Year’s Day after attending Mass at Sacred Heart Parish, Uyo, where a sermon delivered by the parish priest, Rev. Fr. Donatus Udoette, urged worshippers to forgive past hurts and embrace peace.

“He was not at a political event, nor addressing supporters,” Eyiboh said. “He was in church, listening as a parishioner, when the message on forgiveness struck him personally.”

He said shortly after the service, Akpabio announced that he would forgive those who had offended him and discontinue all legal actions instituted in his name.

He added that about nine defamation suits are affected by the decision, “including the widely publicised ₦200 billion suit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.”

Other cases involving individuals and associates, he said, are also to be withdrawn.

Eyiboh noted that Akpabio had always been firm in defending his reputation through lawful means, stressing that the Senate President had never apologised for seeking redress in court when allegations were made against him.

“The law, for him, was both a shield and a sword,” he said. “To willingly lay it down marks a deliberate interruption of a familiar exercise of power.”

He explained that the decision should be seen within the broader context of Akpabio’s leadership philosophy, which combines political authority with strong religious conviction.

Read Also: Akpabio aide takes Senate President’s free medical outreach to Lagos, targets 700 beneficiaries

“Akpabio has always viewed power as a trust, not just something to be exercised,” Eyiboh said. “In that worldview, forgiveness is not weakness; it is responsibility.”

The aide also linked the move to Akpabio’s approach as Senate President, noting that the 10th Senate has recorded relative stability and productivity under his leadership.

“More than 90 bills have been passed in two years, with over 50 already assented to by the President.

“In an environment where politics thrives on confrontation, restraint by those in authority helps lower tension and refocus attention on governance,” Eyiboh said.

He added that prolonged legal battles often distract leaders and entrench grievances, while forgiveness frees emotional and institutional energy for national tasks.

“There is also a strategic value,” he said. “Choosing reconciliation over escalation strengthens cohesion within the legislature and preserves authority without making it brittle.”

Eyiboh dismissed claims that the withdrawal of the suits amounted to capitulation, arguing that forgiveness is easier to misunderstand than to practise.

“Forgiveness can be misread as weakness, but it takes confidence to absorb insults without retaliation,” he said.

He recalled a statement once made to Akpabio by the late evangelist, Rev. Uma Ukpai: “Only fruit-bearing trees attract stones. If you are being attacked, it means you are bearing fruit.”

According to Eyiboh, Akpabio’s decision was meant to serve as an example in a political climate where disagreements are quickly personalised and litigated.

“Nigeria is dealing with serious challenges — insecurity, economic pressure and social distrust,” he said. “Leaders who demonstrate emotional restraint contribute to national healing in ways that laws and budgets alone cannot.”

He stressed that the withdrawal of the suits should be read as public modelling of forgiveness rather than a one-off gesture, adding that its true value would be measured by whether it encourages moderation and dialogue in public life.

“For the Senate President, forgiveness is both a faith obligation and a leadership tool,” Eyiboh said. “Sometimes, the most radical act in politics is not retaliation, but restraint.”
