  • Eulogies for Buhari, Uzodimma as FUTO Teaching Hospital is unveiled

Eulogies for Buhari, Uzodimma as FUTO Teaching Hospital is unveiled

Nigerians from different parts the country on Friday poured encomia on President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State as they gathered at the premises of the former Federal Medical Centre, Owerri to formally unveil the place with its new status as Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri.

Those who spoke – the now Chief Medical Director of Federal University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Kingsley Achigbu, the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri ( FUTO), Prof (Mrs.) Nnenna N. Oti, the Chairman Governing Board of FUTO, Sen. Jack Tilley- Gyado,

The Chairman of the Board of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Senator(Dr) IsHaq Salman, the Minister of State, Health, Barr. Joseph Nkama-Ekumankama, among others, lauded the good relationship between President Buhari and Governor Uzodimma that made the unveiling possible.

Even Governor Uzodimma in his remarks did not hide his feelings regarding the unusual attention President Buhari gave to him while he was seeking to have the former FMC upgraded to a Teaching Hospital that will serve the needs of FUTO medical school and the medical and other people of Imo State.

Governor Uzodimma said: “Today’s event which is the formal inauguration of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Owerri, is a product of our collaboration with the federal government. It was planted and nurtured by our administration as a sign of our commitment to offer quality healthcare to Imo people. Before now, our people have had to travel long distances to enjoy some of these services with the attendant difficulties with distant travel and dislocation from one’s comfort zone.

“It is, therefore, with a heart full of gratitude that I commend the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, the Honourable Minister of Health, and his colleague the Minister of State for Health, who is also a brother and other officials who have made this dream a reality.

“In addition to complementing our efforts at Imo State University Teaching Hospital, Orlu, this institution offers Imo people the much needed employment opportunities with commensurate impact on the economy of the state.

“This institution, therefore, brings with it lots of opportunities to Imo residents, aside the traditional benefits of first class healthcare which we hope will complement the policies of the Imo State government. In addition to supporting the College of Medicine of FUTO, this establishment is also empowered by law to run a number of other training schools most of which provide the much needed skilled manpower for health institutions within the State and beyond.

These include the School of Nursing, School of Anaesthetic Technology, School of Dental Technology, etc. These schools offer mostly OND equivalent certification and provide career pathways for our young people.  By the affiliation with FUTO, the University can now introduce more graduate courses in health disciplines such as the BNSC degree in nursing.

“We do know that while it remained a Federal Medical Centre, the hospital’s performance was top notch in all areas of its tripartite mandate. Its reputation was comparable to that of other tertiary hospitals of its kind. In fact, it could easily have been ranked about the biggest FMC in the country both in stature and scope of services offered.

“However, its upgrade to a teaching hospital offers a bigger platform for collaborations and the ability to attract and retain the highest level of skilled manpower in health. This is easily because most of the specialists, especially those who have attained the cadre of Medical Consultants, often desire the academic fulfilment which can only be gained from a teaching hospital such as this.

“Since its inception about a century ago, this institution has undergone some metamorphosis. Over this period, it has been quite pivotal in the delivery of good quality healthcare to residents of Imo State and neighbouring States. I must, therefore, commend the present management of the hospital under the leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Kingsley Achigbu and the Board of Management for restoring peace and order to this institution. They also deserve commendation for their achievements in the area of human capital development and for attracting vital infrastructure to the institution.

“As a Government, we have enjoyed a cordial and collaborative relationship with the Federal Teaching Hospital even while it was a Federal Medical Centre. A good example is the collaboration in the fight against the COVID-19 scourge which confronted the state soon after my assumption of office. To the glory of God, this collaboration was instrumental to the relatively excellent showing by our state in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

NNPP affirms Saliu Musa as Kogi governorship candidate

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on Friday dismissed insinuations of the existence of a possible faction with the party in Kogi state, insisting that it has only one candidate for the forth coming governorship in the state. National Publicity Secretary of the party, Agbo Major said in a statement that Dr. Mubarak Saliu Musa who won the INEC monitored party primary in Lokoja remain it’s authentic governorship candidate in the state.

Major said the NNPP has already commenced vigorous campaign for it’s candidate I. The state and was prepared to take over Kogi state just like it did in Kano state. Rerun election: Appeal Court dismisses NNPP’s suit against Doguwa for lacking merit

The Court of Appeal in Kano on Friday struck out an appeal filed by the New Nigeria People’s Party and its candidate Salisu Yushau, against the re-election of Alhassan Doguwa of the All Progressive Congress (APC). Doguwa represents Doguwa/Tudun-wada Federal Constituency. A three-member panel headed by Justice Ita George-Mbaba, in a unanimous judgment, also struck out the suit for lack of jurisdiction and affirmed the decision of Tribunal.

The court upheld the decision of the National and State House of Assembly Election Tribunal. George-Mbaba also dismissed the appellants’ prayer to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from issuance of Certificate of Return to Doguwa and equally withdraw the said Certificate it already issued to him. The Judge also ordered the appellants to pay the respondents the sum of N200, 000 as cost for filing frivolous petition.

NAN reports that the national and state assembly elections petitions tribunal had, on April 7, struck out a petition filed by NNPP seeking to restrain INEC from conducting supplementary polls in Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal constituency in the state. The appellants in their appeal are seeking the court to set aside the tribunal’s decision which claimed lack of jurisdiction to stop INEC from conducting the supplementary election.

The appellant in their application are also seeking the court to set aside the April 15 re-run election that declared Mr Doguwa as the winner, member representing Tudun Wada/ Doguwa Federal constituency. The respondents in the suit are: Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Alhassan Doguwa, member representing Tudun Wada/ Doguwa Federal constituency Kano and APC.

Earlier, Counsel to the appellants, Adegboyega Awomolo, (SAN), argued that Section 4(6) of the Electoral Act 2022 empowers that any party can challenge the decision of INEC, adding that the Appeal was sequence to the provision of Electoral Act.

He urged the court to allow the appeal and strike out the respondents’ preliminary objection. Counsel to the first respondent, Idris Yakubu, urged the court to dismiss the suit. Counsel to the second and third respondents, Nureini Jimoh and Abdul Adamu-Fagge, urged the court to strike out the main suit at the tribunal and dismiss the appeal with a cost.

    • Osimhen, Kvaratskheli become Napoli greats like Maradona
    • How wine-loving eccentric Spalletti ended club’s years of hurt
    • Revealed: Unsung heroes in title glory

Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia stand alongside Diego Maradona as Napoli greats after powering southern Italy’s biggest football club to just their third Serie A title. Osimhen and summer signing Kvaratskhelia, 22, have struck up a devastating partnership this season which has been central to Napoli winning their first league crown since 1990 and fulfilling the dreams of a generation of supporters.

Osimhen has become one of the most devastating centre-forwards in European football, clattering in goals left and right and leading the team through the example of his immense hard work both on and off the ball.

The 24-year-old has netted 22 times in 26 league appearances, three more than his nearest rival for this year’s ‘Capocannoniere’, or league top scorer, with five games remaining.

Injury on international duty has slowed down the Nigeria forward’s scoring rate but between returning from a thigh injury in mid-October and the most recent round of African Cup of Nations qualifiers last month he averaged a goal a game.

Osimhen scored 23 times in 23 matches in all competitions over that period, propelling Napoli to the brink of a historic Scudetto and becoming a bona fide fan idol even before he scored the goal that secured the title on Thursday.

Cakes, coffees and easter eggs began to be made in his honour while children around the city wear face masks similar to his own.

Cardboard cut-outs of him and Kvaratskhelia pop up alongside long-standing murals of Maradona around Naples, as do separate depictions of Napoli’s new dynamic duo.

“You can boot the ball at him or in behind him and he always manages to get hold of it,” said Napoli coach Luciano Spalletti earlier this month. “He’s also a fan favourite so when he plays he creates a wave of enthusiasm for the whole team… Players like him are just made of something different.”

But although Napoli and Naples are currently on top of the world, Italian football hasn’t been the world’s richest and most powerful for decades, and the idea of players of their quality staying for the seven years Maradona did now feels like a fantasy.

Between them Nigeria striker Osimhen and Kvaratskhelia have scored just under half of Napoli’s 69 league goals, the Georgian wing wizard also setting up 10 and providing the kind of individual brilliance which already has the world’s top club’s circling.

Perhaps put under too much pressure to deliver in his first season in a major championship, Kvaratskhelia’s form has wobbled in recent weeks but both he and Osimhen have shone so brightly this season questions over their futures are already being asked.

Napoli are one of the few Serie A clubs on a stable financial footing but owner Aurelio De Laurentiis is eventually going to want to cash in on his most valuable playing assets.

Rumours are already swirling of nine-figure sums being offered for Osimhen, whose contract expires in two years’ time and who said last month that it is his “dream to play in the Premier League someday”.

Late last month De Laurentiis blasted local reporters who asked the film mogul about a renewal to Kvaratskhelia’s contract which runs all the way to 2027, calling them “pains in the neck who… only think about filthy money”.

However in reality Napoli are preparing a one-year extension to Kvaratskhelia’s deal, more than doubling his salary of 1.2 million euros a season in a bid to stave off attention for Europe’s richer clubs.

Another run at the Champions League after reaching the quarter-finals for the first time might yet convince Osimhen to stay a little longer, enough time to for Napoli to trying going from a romantic storyline to establish themselves as a serious force at home and abroad.

Meet  wine-loving  eccentric Spalletti  who ended Napoli’s years of hurt

Napoli’s historic Serie A title might be victory for some of Europe’s most passionate, long-suffering fans and a downtrodden city, but it is also personal triumph for Luciano Spalletti, the man they said could not win.

In a country full of big football personalities Spalletti might just be the quirkiest; a wine-making, highly-quotable eccentric who has earned the big-time success his long and eventful coaching career deserves.

At 64 years old, Spalletti is the oldest ever coach to win the Italian title but his vibrancy and the modern, free-wheeling way his Napoli team play bely his advancing years.

He is also one of the most camera-friendly coaches around, his oak-coloured pate and world-weary smile as instantly recognisable as the enjoyable football his teams play.

As a lower league player the closest he got to greatness was pulling Diego Maradona’s shirt in an Italian Cup match, now he leads a team ready to emulate the one inspired by Naples’ Argentine icon.

“I haven’t been travelling around in first class, gazing out of the window. I’ve had to hitch-hike,” said Spalletti after the last-gasp win at Juventus which all but sealed the title. Being in a position to win the Scudetto is repayment for all the sacrifices I’ve made over the years.”

Before Napoli, Spalletti was best known for his two spells at Roma, where he won two Italian Cups and the Italian Super Cup for a success-starved club, one which had gone through four managers and almost got relegated the season before he first arrived there in the summer of 2005.The previous year he had led tiny Udinese into the Champions League positions and at Roma he would do the same, while also being the man behind one of this century’s most significant tactical developments.

Years before Lionel Messi became Barcelona’s fabled ‘false nine’, Francesco Totti was playing the exact same role under Spalletti, a move which would make Roma one of the most exciting teams in Europe and turn the Italy forward from a classic number 10 into a goal machine.

    Read Also:

Totti won the European Golden Boot in 2007 and the most prolific period of his career coincided with cup wins that year and in 2008, when Spalletti’s Roma took the league title race with Inter Milan to the final day of the season.

It was the third time in as many years that Roma finished second behind Inter, who won four Serie A crowns in a row in the aftermath of the 2006 ‘Calciopoli’ match-fixing scandal which led to Juventus being relegated.

“Spalletti has deserved to win the title for years, when he was in charge of Roma they played great football,” said Udinese’s all-time top scorer Antonio Di Natale to the Gazzetta Dello Sport last month.

“I’ve not known many coaches as passionate and skilled as him, he used to stay at the training ground 12-13 hours a day just to take care of every possible detail.”

Spalletti also has no problem butting heads with players who question his dressing room authority.

Antonio Cassano recounted in 2021 that Spalletti once dropped him from the Roma squad for refusing to turn down the volume of his music in the training ground gym, and when he returned to the capital in January 2016 after winning two league titles at Zenit Saint Peterburg he clashed with an ageing Totti.

A club-record 87 points in 2017, this time behind all-conquering Juventus, meant almost nothing to Roma fans due to his massive falling out with their iconic captain, who retired the day Spalletti was loudly booed before securing yet another second-placed finish and leaving for Inter.

He took Inter into the Champions League in both his two seasons at the San Siro, which were tarnished by another row with another powerful skipper.

Spalletti stripped Mauro Icardi of the captain’s armband after a long, and very pubic, spat over a contract renewal complicated by Icardi’s showgirl wife – and agent – Wanda Nara being a television pundit.

He was removed in 2019 and spent two years on gardening leave, playing paddle and managing his Tuscan vineyard, before taking over at Napoli and finally creating a title-winning vintage.

“No disrespect to my previous coaches but what Spalletti has done here can’t be compared to anything else I’ve seen elsewhere. He’s a genius,” Victor Osimhen told France Football earlier this month.

“The day we manage to apply 99 percent of what he teaches us we will obliterate any team we come up against.”

Newcastle United’s owners are reportedly interested in a move for Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar, who could be available on a loan-to-buy agreement this summer.

The former Barcelona attacker is widely considered to be one of the world’s best players on his day but has received backlash from PSG supporters recently.

Eddie Howe has expressed his desire to add ‘elite’ players to his squad, but it remains to be seen whether he will sanction a move for Neymar.

According to reputed transfer journalist Graeme Bailey, Newcastle’s majority shareholders want to make the Brazil international their ‘marquee signing.’

“It’s our understanding that Newcastle United’s majority shareholders PIF have a real interest in bringing Neymar to the Premier League.”

Niniola, Hakeem Ogara to join Beccablisse for ‘Becca And The Girls’

Singer Niniola and actor Hakeem Ogara will be joining Naija FM star, Rebecca Edun aka Beccablisse for her new initiative, Beeca And The Girls.

Becca And The Girls, an initiative for the girl child but with bias for those who are in the Arts class in secondary school, was conceptualised by the popular OAP on the heels of her experience as an Arts student when she was in secondary school.

According to Beccablisse, Niniola will be talking about her success in a male dominated field while Hakeem Ogara will be sharing his experiences as a successful actor. Other facilitators are the tallest model in Sub-Saharan Africa, Mubarak Bakare, and Beat FM OAP, Bibirair, graduate from a Dublin Island tertiary institution.

Speaking on the project, Beccablisse said, “This project is an outreach event put together by me. It’s called Becca And The Girls. It’s about giving back to young girls in secondary schools, especially those in the Arts class. I remember when I was in Regan Memorial Baptist Girls Secondary School, Sabo, Yaba. I was in Arts class, and I remember how they used to look at us as students who are not serious or less in value to those in Sciences and Commercial classes. So I want the students to know they are not as serious as they are perceived, and that there is a lot they can do with Arts, even in the entertainment industry and the media.  As a one time Arts student, I am doing very well for myself right now and I am definitely going to do far more.  So I basically want to give back to the girl child, inspire them, and I am starting with my Alma mater, Regan Memorial Baptist Girls Secondary School.”

The maiden edition of Becca And The Girls, is packaged to be a 2 day event that will take place on May 11 and May 12, and the first day is planned to be an interactive session with SSS1 & 2 girls. The final part will be on May 12 and will see ten best Arts students in the school taking a tour of Naija FM, Beats FM and Classic FM after which they will visit Terra Kulture, an arts and to learn and merry.

Beccablisse, who celebrated her birthday on May 2, further revealed the launch of her initiative is also a way to celebrate her birthday. The project which is in collaboration with Timeless Lush Services is expected to be a yearly event and will extend to other girls schools outside Lagos.

Lagos seals, demolishes Banana Island buildings

The Lagos State Government on Friday demolished a three-storey building under construction, sealed four others, and removed fences around new project sites for being without approvals in Banana Island.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki led the enforcement team.

It was said that the team met resistance in some houses but dialogued with some residents before sealing the sites and that some buildings which were sealed in April where construction works continued were both resealed and toked.

Oki explained to some residents with fake or wrong approvals steps they must take to comply within two weeks to avoid demolition.

The team, at 101 Close, escaped attacks as a security man unleashed ferocious dogs on the officials.

A policeman in the team spotted the animals, raised the alarm, and they caught the guard who was trying to run away after leaving the gate open for the dogs.

He was led back into the compound where he had left the gate open for the animals and was forced to chain them.

Reacting, Oki, said that his officials usually go through several harassments and intimidation from residents in the course of their duties.

He explained that the three-storey demolished and four buildings sealed did not have approvals and did not conform to planning rules and regulations.

He said the fences pulled down neither had approvals from Lagos State Government nor authorisation from National Inland Waterways.

“We sealed four buildings and some couple of fences but we still have more to do because most of them were built without approval,” he said.

Oki advised Lagos residents to always do the right thing and obey all physical planning laws for safe construction and sanity in the environment.
