    • Police arrest scores of anti-monarchy protesters
    • Tinubu: I look forward to further engagements with you

A gathering of about 100 world leaders and a television audience of millions across the world watched in awe yesterday as King Charles III was crowned in Britain’s biggest ceremonial event for seven decades; a  sumptuous display of pageantry dating back 1,000 years.

An estimated crowd of 2 million others massed on the streets of a rainy London after the historic first coronation in Britain since 1953.

But it was not all cheers across the country as the police smashed a rally by anti-monarchy protesters who were calling for the abrogation of the throne.

The protesters’ van full of ‘Not My King’ banners was scoured by the police.

Human Rights Watch described the arrest as incredibly alarming.

“This is something you would expect to see in Moscow not London,” it said in a statement in London.

President-elect Bola Tinubu expressed his desire for further engagements between Nigeria and Britain in the years ahead.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church, placed the 360-year-old St Edward’s Crown on Charles’ head as he sat upon a 14th Century throne in Westminster Abbey.

The historic and solemn event dates back to the time of the 74-year-old’s predecessor William the Conqueror in 1066.

Charles’ second wife Camilla, 75, was also crowned queen during the two-hour ceremony, which while rooted in history, was also an attempt to present a forward-looking monarchy, with those involved in the service reflecting a more diverse Britain and leaders from all faiths.

For a nation struggling to find its way in the political maelstrom after its exit from the European Union and maintain its standing in a new world order, its supporters say the royal family provides an international draw, a vital diplomatic tool, and a means of staying on the world stage.

“No other country could put on such a dazzling display – the processions, the pageantry, the ceremonies, and street parties,” Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said.

Despite Sunak’s enthusiasm, the coronation took place amid a cost of living crisis and public scepticism, particularly among the young, about the role and relevance of the monarchy.

Yesterday’s event was on a smaller scale than the one staged for Queen Elizabeth in 1953 but was no less  spectacular, featuring an array of historical regalia from golden orbs and bejewelled swords to a sceptre holding the world’s largest colourless cut diamond.

While the coronation was not essential, it was regarded as a means to legitimise the monarch in a public way.

The king and queen left Buckingham Palace for the abbey in the modern Black Diamond State Jubilee Coach accompanied by cavalrymen wearing shining breastplates and plumed helmets.

Hundreds of soldiers in scarlet uniforms and black bearskin hats lined the route along The Mall, the grand boulevard to Buckingham Palace. Tens of thousands ignored the light rain to mass in a crowd more than 20 deep in some places to watch what some saw as a moment of history.

“The split-second glance of seeing the king is really important but I think the whole day as well … the idea of the nation coming together.

“You very much feel the pride in the nation,” said Mark Strasshine after the royal coach went by.

Police arrest ‘Not My King’ protesters

Hundreds of republicans booed and waved banners reading “Not My King”.

The protesters, who were in yellow and waved placards, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with royal fans bedecked in Union flags as thousands of people lined the procession route.

As the ranks of the protesters swelled, the chants of ‘Not My King’ rang round the streets.

The chants elicited boos and rivaling chants of ‘God Save the King’ from supporters of the crown.

In no time, the police descended on the protesters after warning they would have an ‘extremely low threshold’ in dealing with anyone who tried to disrupt the day.

Some of the protesters were soon arrested and their van which was filled with ‘Not My King’ banners scoured.

One of those arrested was a defiant royalist shouting ‘He is My King’.

He was detained for allegedly throwing an object.

More than 11,000 policemen were deployed to ensure order

The Republic campaign group said its leader, Graham Smith, had been arrested along with five other protesters.

Lawmaker Clive Lewis, who was among the anti-monarchy protesters, said: “It is an unequal and out-of-date system because it has a hereditary billionaire individual born into wealth and privilege who basically symbolises the inequality of wealth and power in our society.”

The Metropolitan Police said a number of arrests had been made and the individuals were being held “on suspicion of breaching the peace.”

“Earlier today we arrested four people in the area of St Martin’s Lane. They were held on suspicion of conspiracy to cause public nuisance. We seized lock-on devices,” it said in a tweet.

“A further three people were arrested in the area of Wellington Arch. They were held on suspicion of possessing articles to cause criminal damage. There will be further updates later today.”

The Daily Mail One reported that a video showed members of the public quizzing police on why Republic members had been arrested, with an officer saying: “I’m not going to get into a conversation about that – they are under arrest, end of.”

Human rights activist Peter Tatchell told Yahoo: “The police broke their promise that peaceful anti-monarchy protests would be permitted.

“They arrested the head of Republic and other protesters, confiscated Republic’s official placards, photographed everyone and erected a huge watchtower in front of the Republic protest so the king would not see us.

“It’s an outrageous abuse of police powers and an attack of freedom of expression. This just reconfirms that the police cannot be trusted.”

However, not everyone was against police taking action against protesters. Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson tweeted: “Not My King? If you do not wish to live in a country that has a monarchy the solution is not to turn up with your silly boards. The solution is to emigrate.”

Inside the abbey, bedecked with flowers and flags, politicians and representatives from Commonwealth nations including President Muhammadu Buhari took their seats alongside charity workers and celebrities, including actors Emma Thompson, Maggie Smith, Judi Dench and U.S. singer Katy Perry.

Much of the ceremony featured elements that Charles’ forebears right back to King Edgar in 973 would recognise, officials said. Handel’s coronation anthem “Zadok The Priest” was sung as it has been at every coronation since 1727.

But there was also the new, including an anthem composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, famed for his West End and Broadway theatre shows, and a gospel choir.

Charles’ grandson Prince George and the grandchildren of Camilla acted as pages.

However, there was no formal role for either Charles’ younger son Prince Harry, after his high-profile falling out with his family, or his brother Prince Andrew, who was forced to quit royal duties because of his friendship with late U.S. financier Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

They sat in the third row behind working members of the royal family.

Charles looked serious as he swore oaths to govern justly and uphold the Church of England – of which he is the titular head – before the most sacred part of the ceremony when he was anointed on his hands, head, and breast by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby with holy oil consecrated in Jerusalem.

After being presented with symbolic regalia, Welby placed the St Edward’s Crown on his head and the congregation cried out “God save the King”.

After the service, Charles and Camilla departed in the four-tonne Gold State Coach built for George III, the last king of Britain’s American colonies, riding to Buckingham Palace in a one-mile procession of 4,000 military personnel from 39 nations.

It is the largest show of its kind in Britain since the coronation of Charles’ mother.

“When you see everyone dressed up and taking part it is just fantastic. It makes you so proud,” said teacher Andy Mitchell, 63, who left his house in the early hours to get into London.

“My big concern is that younger people are losing interest in all of this and it won’t be the same in the future.”

Tinubu writes Charles, seeks further engagements between Nigeria, Britain

President-elect Bola Tinubu, in a congratulatory letter to King Charles 111 yesterday, expressed the desire for further engagements between Nigeria and Britain in the years ahead.

He said: “It is heartwarming that your ascension to the throne is coming after the 70-year-reign of your iconic mother, Queen Elizabeth II, whose death last September left the entire world in grief, given her eventful reign.

“Bearing your unique place in history as the first King to be inaugurated in Britain since 1937, I trust that you will follow in the glorious footsteps of your late mother and even surpass her achievements in United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.

“Particularly remarkable about you is your love for the environment, importantly your lifelong crusade for sustainability and biodiversity.

“I hope that you will continue to push for these initiatives with kind eyes on the situation and plight of the under-privileged people in Africa and around the world.

“As the President-elect of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I also hope that during your reign, the excellent bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Britain will continue and even become stronger in the interests of our two countries.

“I look forward to further engagements with you and the opportunity of a meeting in the nearest future as both of us had earlier indicated in discussions with mutual friends and associates.”

He prayed that God might grant the king strength and wisdom and “make your reign successful for the benefit of not only the people of the Great Britain, but for the entire world.”

  • Reps $700m Cabotage fund suspension will affect disbursement conditions – Shipowners

Reps $700m Cabotage fund suspension will affect disbursement conditions – Shipowners

The Nigerian Shipowners Association (NISA), says the suspension of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) will affect the progress in the fund’s disbursement conditions.

This was disclosed by the  founding president of the association, Mr Isaac Jolapamo.

His words:  “We, as an association have gone further to have a company, although we had it since 2008. But we floated a new one just to meet the condition.

“Members of the association own the company. If we are 16 or 20, are we not good enough to get the fund?

“We have started making moves to approach the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd because we understand that it is offering to give nine per cent of the 15 per cent the ship owners need to contribute.

“So that gives us six per cent, so if all of us, as broke as we are, we are able to see six per cent to add. So why should anybody want to come and spoil what is going on,” he said.

Jolapamo said it was not the right of the House of Representatives to suspend the CVFF, wondering the reason for the vested interest of legislators on the fund.

“We have been on this struggle for 20 years, to disburse the money that we have contributed. It is not government money. They have made laws, why must they disturb the executive.

“After the law, the bus stops on the minister’s table for the disbursement. There are people who want to do it and have their name written in gold, somebody just woke up and say they are stopping it.

“The legal advisory we have is that they don’t have the right to do what they are doing, except there is a vested interest. This matter has gone so far that what is left is the disbursement.

“Some of us that were just fifty something years old when this thing started are now in the seventies and eighties. To me, we have to see to its end,” he said.

  • Zlatan: Fatherhood, music and me

    Zlatan: Fatherhood, music and me

Nigerian rapper and singer Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael aka Zlatan Ibile, has opened up on two of his greatest achievements in life – music and fatherhood.

Opening up on his new role as a father, Zlatan said the role has changed a lot of things in him.

The Zanku Record boss also noted that he realised that he isn’t proud of some of the crazy things he has done in the past especially while promoting his music.

Zlatan, while highlighting the changes, said that having gone through some old videos of him dancing almost unclad on the streets, it dawned on him that it would be difficult for him to correct his son if he decided to toll the same path.

He said, “I don’t think it (fatherhood) affects my music creation. It just changed me as a person, there are some things I’ve done as a person and some videos I made when I didn’t have a child like going on the streets and start dancing to my songs but after giving birth to my son and I was on YouTube one day then I saw the video I was like so someday my son will grow up and see this videos, how do I correct him when he’s doing some crazy stuffs.

“Since then I started changing myself, I can’t be doing all these things. There are some places I can go to before, there are some arguments that are not necessary anymore. It has been a positive change anyway.”

The 28-year-old also discussed his recording process, and how he’s managed to showcase his versatility.

“I think I can actually submit an album of like 15 tracks that are recorded right now. I’ve worked with so many people. I’ve been used to recording, I barely sleep at night because my body system is used to being awake all night. I have a private studio, we go there all the time. I don’t like waiting for what’s next to do before I start recording. So basically there are songs and I feel like I’m ready to go again if I decide to. The amount of songs, I think there’s nothing stopping me to actually put a body of work together. Since I’ve dropped singles and that, people like that they are feeling it, I think I can just compile some of the songs again and then go for a project and serve them to the world,” he said.

Continuing, Zlatan said, “2023, I actually dropped music very late due to one reason or another, and ever since Toulouse was cool and manageable for me. And then 2021 I dropped ‘Resan,’ I could not jump out of the album to start releasing singles, I had to push and shoot videos from ‘Resan’ for a little while before jumping into other singles. So this year I decided to myself that I want to start early so I can see more results with ‘Omo Ologo’ EP.”

  • EPL : Chelsea secure first win since April

EPL : Chelsea secure first win since April

Two late goals finally gave Frank Lampard his first win since his return as Chelsea’s interim manager.

The Blues had lost all four Premier League games since Lampard’s return in April, but had led through Conor Gallagher’s early header.

Matias Vina levelled for Bournemouth, but Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix struck inside the last 10 minutes.

Relegation remains a possibility for the Cherries with three games left, while Chelsea are 11th in the table.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Raheem Sterling among five players left out from the side that had lost 3-1 at Arsenal in their previous outing, Chelsea were much improved with 21-year-old Noni Madueke a particular threat on the right-hand side.

Bournemouth’s best spell came early in the second half when Vina missed a chance for a second and Dango Ouattara headed over from close range, but Gary O’Neil’s side still have a good chance of avoiding a quick return to the Championship with games against Crystal Palace, Manchester United and Everton to come.

They are currently nine points clear of the bottom three, although some teams still have four matches to play.

  • EPL : Man City open 4-point lead with Leeds win

EPL : Man City open 4-point lead with Leeds win

Manchester City moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League by surviving a late scare to beat a Leeds side playing under new manager Sam Allardyce for the first time.

Two fine first-half goals by Ilkay Gundogan had done the damage for City, who appeared utterly dominant as they headed towards their 10th straight league win.

Gundogan’s first neat finish, which came after Riyad Mahrez found him in space on the edge of the area, was into the bottom left-hand corner of Joel Robles’ goal.

His second, again with Mahrez the provider, was identical apart from that he found the opposite corner of the net.

City were in full control but could not find a third goal to finish Leeds off after the break. Even Erling Haaland, for once, failed to score – his best effort came back off the post.

Their best chance to wrap the game up came with six minutes to go, when Pascal Struijk fouled Phil Foden inside the area and referee Andrew Madley pointed to the spot.

Regular penalty-taker Haaland passed up the chance to take it and add to his 51-goal tally for the season, but saw Gundogan miss out on a hat-trick when he sent his effort against the post.

That gave Leeds hope and, only 58 seconds later, they were somehow back in the game. Manuel Akanji failed to deal with a long ball and substitute Rodrigo beat Ederson with a low finish.

Their noisy supporters roared them forward in search of an unlikely equaliser but City were not in the mood to let the three points slip.

Pep Guardiola’s side march on, with the next step in their Treble bid coming against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Tuesday, in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final.

Leeds and Allardyce, meanwhile, only have a grim fight against relegation ahead.

With three games left, they remain out of the relegation zone on goal difference – but they will have to show far more attacking intent in the next few weeks if they are to avoid the drop.

  • Bellingham inches closer to Madrid for record deal

Bellingham inches closer to Madrid for record deal

Real Madrid are reportedly close to agreeing a deal for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham, as more details about the operation crystallise.

According to Cadena SER, Florentino Perez will not allow another global superstar to slip through their grasp after the Kylian Mbappe saga last year. Earlier this week reports emerged out of Madrid that a deal was close. Seemingly now it is the number of variables that separate the two clubs.

Bellingham will be handed a six-year deal until 2029, and his release clause will be €1b, putting his future in the hands of the club. His salary will be in the second rung of the salary scale, behind only Eden Hazard, who earns the most at the club.

The English midfielder is set to be one of their long-term answers in Real Madrid’s midfield, as they transition away from Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. Los Blancos will likely then move on to working out their strategy to replace Karim Benzema long-term next summer.

King Charles: Liverpool to mark Coronation with national anthem

Liverpool will play the national anthem at Anfield before today’s Premier League meeting with Brentford as a mark of respect for the Coronation of King Charles. Club officials have agreed to the request from the Premier League in line with all top-flight fixtures. Liverpool did not wish to be accused of disrespect towards the new monarch by refusing to do so, despite being aware many fans do not support the decision.

However, the club has said it is a matter of ‘personal choice’ how the fans inside the stadium react.

“Before kick-off and in recognition of the Premier League’s request to mark the Coronation, players and officials will congregate around the centre circle when the national anthem will be played,” read a club statement.
