25 students collapse as company discharge chemical waste in Lagos

Twenty five students of Ogba Junior Secondary School went into coma on Thursday in Lagos after inhaling a chemical waste allegedly discharged into drainage by Bizcircuit Photo Laboratory situated in Ogba Shopping Plaza, Lagos.

The incident occurred at about 12.40pm while the students were still in their classes shortly before the close of school for the day.

The situation led to panic from the school authority and some parents that raced to the scene.

Officials of the various state emergency management agencies arrived the scene and rushed the unconscious victims to Blue Cross Hospital and Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH.

Head of Logistic, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Mr. Femi Giwa told journalists at the scene that of the 25 victims four were in critical condition and presently responding to treatment.

He said a distress call  was received and the officials responded immediately to save the situation.

Giwa said  on arriving the scene, the team conducted a general assessment and discovered that certain liquid chemicals with offensive and choking odour was stored and used for production in the photo lab on the first floor of the shopping complex.

He said the offensive odour permeated the environment, which could have led to the unfortunate incident.

He said the government sealed off the premises and arrested three of the staff of the photo studio.

He however assured that proper investigation would be conducted to ascertain the chemical analysis and its effect on the environment.

The State Director of Fire and Safety Services, Mr.  Rasaq Fadipe, said officials assisted the rescue operations to avoid the spread of chemical fumes.

  • Colleagues, friends betrayed me – Justice Salami

Colleagues, friends betrayed me – Justice Salami

Retired President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami, on Thursday disclosed that his colleagues and friends in the judiciary betrayed him during his trying time.

Justice Salami, who likened his case to that of the biblical Joseph, who was sold to slavery, by his family members, faulted roles the National Judicial Council (NJC) played in the events leading to his suspension.

He contended that NJC, by its conduct, sold out to the Executive and failed in its duties and functions.

Justice Salami argued that not only was the NJC wrong in suspending him, having lacked the constitutional powers to so act, it also acted wrongly when it asked President Goodluck Jonathan to suspend him.

Justice Salami, who retired on October 15 as the court’s fifth President, spoke during a valedictory court session held in his honour by the court.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mohammed Adoke (SAN) was absent at the event. He also did not send any representative.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloma Mukhtar, former CJN, Justice Mohammed Uwais, Justice Mahmood Mohammed of the Supreme Court and the President of the National Industrial Court, Justice Babatunde Adejumo were among those at the event.

Justice Salami, dressed in the ceremonial gown of Justices of the court, presided over proceedings. He sat on the seat he occupied until August 18, 2011 when he was purportedly suspended by President Jonathan.

He wondered why the NJC created by the Constitution to protect judicial officers (judges) abandoned its responsibilities and sold out in his case.

  • Outrage in Senate over rape of two year- old girl

Senators on Thursday expressed anger over alleged rape of a two year old girl, Chinwendu Onwudiwe, by a policeman in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

Mararaba, a densely populated area of Nasarawa State, is about five minutes’ drive to the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Abuja.

The alleged police rapist was as one Corporal Anthony Onoja.

The lawmakers voiced out their indignation over the incident after Senator Helen Esuene (Akwa Ibom South) presented what was described “a touchy” motion on the “Cruelty to infants” in the country.

Esuene in her lead debate noted that the country has been witnessing acts of cruelty to babies including their being kidnapped, abused and sold as commodities.

She invited the Senate to note “the recent case of criminality in Mararaba area of Nasarawa State meted against a two year old baby girl (Chinwendu Onwudiwe) by no other than a policeman who is supposed to uphold the law.”

The lawmaker said,” on October 20, 2013 the gory news that hit the airwaves as carried by Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) was the sexual assault of a two year old female infant by a neigbour who is a police officer called Corporal Anthony Onoja.”

She noted that though the matter was reported to the police, it was yet to be taken to court.

She said that Section 31 and 32 of the Child’s Right Act “make this case a criminal offence which attracts life imprisonment or 14 years imprisonment depending on the nature of the abuse.”

  • Do you wake up at night to pee?

Do you wake up at night to pee?

It may be a sign that you drank too much the night before or it could be a sign of a significantly larger problem in men. Making multiple trips to the bathroom in the middle of the night is often a sign of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or an “enlarged prostate”.

An enlarged prostate is not prostate cancer but often presents with many of the same symptoms. Like cancer, BPH increases the overall size and number of cells that make up the prostate. When enlarged, it squeezes the urethra, or the thin tube that travels through the penis from the bladder, causing an intense urge to urinate.

There are four key symptoms of BPH to look out for. An enlarged prostate prevents one from being able to fully empty their bladder. This results in urinating much more often than normal with a heightened level of urgency, especially in the middle of the night. With the semi-blockage, it’s common for one to strain starting and maintaining a strong urine stream.

BPH is a growing problem in the region due to ageing populations and doctors are not exactly sure what causes it. Despite the unknown, BPH affects half of all men between the ages of 50 and 60.

Some research is pointing to BPH being associated with the same risk factors that cause health condition such has obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart and vascular disorders. Lifestyle factors such as physical inactivity, tobacco use and poor diet can possibly increase BPH
    risk and worsen its symptoms.

A diet that is rich in essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals has been found to be beneficial in preventing and treating BPH. Vitamin C has the greatest protective effect and can be found in vegetable juices, tomatoes, broccoli, kale, cauliflower and bell peppers. Foods that are high in zinc also appear to be beneficial.

Don’t drink a lot of fluids all at once. Too much can go straight to one’s bladder versus having a hydrating effect on the body. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, especially within two hours of bedtime. It’s important to reduce stress and improve circulation by exercising regularly.

Other self-care techniques for BPH include not taking over-the-counter sinus and cold medications that contain decongestants or antihistamines. These medications have been found to increase the symptoms of BPH.

Reps to probe death of Nigerian in Cyprus

The House of Representative has promised to investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a 20-year-old student of Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mr. Gabriel Soriwei, in Cyprus.

The Chairman House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, Hon Abike Dabiri Erewa, who confirmed the development to journalists, assured the family of the deceased that the legislature will do its best to ensure justice in the matter.

She said Gabriel a student of Cyprus International University in the north of Cyprus, under the control of Turkey, died on September 7 after a woman knocked him down with a car.

She explained that the report presented by the father of the deceased, Mr. Patrick Soriwei, before the House Committee on Diaspora, said police authorities in Turkey were shielding the identity of the woman and has also concealed information on the incident from his family.

She said the deceased father also told the Committee how his late son’s school also treated his death with disdain, adding that the Turkish Embassy in Nigeria did not show much interest in the death of Gabriel.

  • Sylva’s loyalist sues Dickson, police

    Sylva’s loyalist sues Dickson, police

After languishing in a Bayelsa State police cell for six days, Mr. Tonye Okio, a loyalist of former Governor of the state, Mr. Timipre Sylva, on Thursday initiated a court process to regain his freedom.

Okio dragged the state Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson, the police and the Attorney-General of the state before the state High Court sitting in Yenagoa challenging his “continued unlawful detention.”

Okio, who was bundled from his Abuja residence to Bayelsa State by security operatives was initially believed to have been abducted by unknown gunmen.

But the police in a statement signed by the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Peter Ogboi, confirmed that Okio was being detained in the state police command.

The police claimed his arrest and detention was part of an investigation into alleged activities of a syndicate specialised in spreading seditious information.

Okio’s travails started shortly after he allegedly published in his Facebook page that a certain South-south governor was recently arrested in the United States of America with $5million.

But Okio in a suit slated for hearing on November 6 is asking the court to award him N2billion for his unlawful arrest and detention and N20million as damages for the pain, trauma, anguish and loss he suffered from the activities of the defendants.

He wants the court to declare that his arrest and detention is contrary to section 35 of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He also wants a declaration that his “arrest and detention on the basis of a publication on his Facebook account was a brazen violation of his fundamental rights.”

He prayed the court to rule that the physical and mental torture he has been subjected to amounted to a denial of his right to dignity.

  • More than 80 die in Sahara after ‘failed crossing’

The corpses of more than 80 migrants, most of them women and children who died of thirst, have been found in northern Niger after their vehicle broke down attempting to cross the Sahara Desert, military sources said on Thursday.

The migrants had set off in two trucks from Niger’s northernmost mining town Arlit across the desert towards Tamanrasset in Algeria in mid-October but dispersed to find water after their vehicle broke down.

“We have discovered more than 80 bodies scattered in various locations less than 20 km (12 miles) from the border with Algeria,” a senior military officer told Reuters by telephone.

Most were women and children. There was no immediate information on their nationalities

Another military officer said about 20 people from the group survived the ordeal. Five of those walked for kilometers (miles) across the burning desert back to Arlit to inform authorities.

The route across the Sahara is still used by many migrants from the region and from farther afield.

More than 32,000 migrants have arrived in southern Europe from Africa so far this year although it was not known if that was the intended destination for this group.

Hundreds of those who make it to the Mediterranean have drowned trying to cross in recent months.

Two separate incidents in southern Italy this month underscored the dangers involved when 366 Eritrean migrants drowned in one disaster and about 200 were missing after another boat sank just over a week later.

  • Will Smith, wife on trial separation

Will Smith, wife on trial separation

Barely two weeks after Los Angeles-based Nigerian filmmaker, Jeta Amata owned up to the rumoured separation from his wife, Mbong, Hollywwod hunk, Will Smith and wife, Jade Pinkett Smith who live in the same city are said to be undergoing a trial separation.

For three months now, the singer, actor and movie producer is said to be living separately from his wife, and have put their family home up for sale.

The couple who have been married for 15 years, have two kids; Jaden and Willow, although Smith has a 20-year-old son; Trey, from his previous marriage to actress Sheree Fletcher.

News of the crack in their marriage came as a surprise to fans, who have considered the couple to be having one of the most solid marriages in Hollywood.

Indication to the mishap surfaced early in the year, when Jada reportedly suggested that their marriage was on the rocks.

“When you are going through a storm with your spouse, stop thinking about what you ‘believe’ a husband or wife should be,” said Jada, according to a fellow audience member at a charity event.

The actor, who is trending with his current futuristic science thriller, After Earth, is said to be in New Orleans, filming his latest movie Focus, while Jada is believed to have moved into her brother Caleeb’s home in Los Angeles.

This is not the first time the couple has been hit by rumours of marital problems. In April the Hawthorne actress said Will could do “whatever he wants” in their marriage, but later added in a post on Facebook that this did not mean they had an open relationship.

It is not clear what the problem between the two is. Only recently, Jada praised her husband’s parenting efforts: “There are some men who feel like, ‘Listen, I take care of the house and the home. That’s all I need to do. What makes Will the best father in the world to me is that he’s there, not just there in a way that’s traditional; the emotional support he offers his children is immeasurable,” said Jada.
