Neither Amaechi nor his wife have condoled me, says First Lady

The office of the First Lady has  maintained that neither  the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi nor   his wife have come to the State House, Abuja to condole First Lady, Dame Patience like.

This was contained in a statement issued Wednesday  night by the Director of Information in the First Lady’s office, Mrs. Ayo Adesugba.

The statement quoted the First Lady as saying that gesture of compassion comes from the Heart.

The statement reads: ” Many of us claim to serve God. God, whether as Christians or Muslims is compassionate in nature. If truly we serve him, this should reflect in our actions.”

“We restate for the avoidance of doubt that neither the Rivers State Governor nor his wife have come to the State House, Abuja like so many other people from all walks of life, to condole with the First Family.”

“This is a gesture of compassion that comes from the heart. The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, therefore holds no resentment towards anyone who does not wish to come to the State House, or to her residence in Port Harcourt to extend the act of commiseration.”

“The Nation newspaper of today, 21/08/2013, on page 50, carried two pictures of the wife of the Governor of Rivers State, Dame Judith Amaechi. One of the pictures showed Mrs. Amaechi signing a register with the caption: “Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi signing a condolence register during a visit to Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Dr. Patience Jonathan at the Oba’s King Perekule GRA, Port Harcourt residence to commiserate with her on the death of her mother, Mrs. Charity Sisi Oba…”

“Another smaller picture shows the First Lady and the Governor’s wife walking side by side. The pictures
are obviously in response to a release issued by the Office of the First Lady on 19/08/2013 which stated in part that: It is instructive to note that since the death of Mrs. Charity Oba, the mother of the First Lady, several groups and individuals from across the country have come to condole the First Family at the State House, Abuja.”

“They include Executive State Governors and their wives from all the political divides; Nigeria’s former Presidents and Heads of State and their wives, captains of industry, female Ambassadors and High Commissioners of Nigeria, other members of the diplomatic corps, royal fathers and traditional leaders – the list is too numerous to call.”

She went on: “However, the Governor and the wife from the State which the First Lady hails have not paid such a visit.”

“The caption in The Nation states that the photographs were taken in the house of the late mother of Dame Patience, Mrs. Charity Oba. However, the First Lady did not receive guests for condolence visits in her late mother’s home.”

“All those who come to pay condolences and commiserate with Dame Patience during her visit to Rivers State, came to the First Lady’s residence in Port Harcourt, where arrangements were made and facilities were made available to receive sympathizers.”

“We can borrow a leaf from His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan who went to Lagos State with some members of his Executive Council, to commiserate with Governor Babatunde Fashola on the demise of his father, Alhaji Ademola Fashola.”

“Death does not know age, gender or political party affiliation. Neither should compassion.” She added

    … Foreign-based players get Sept. 2 deadline

Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, has explained the rationale behind the invitation of 24 home-based professionals when only five of them will eventually join the 18 overseas-based stars for the game against Malawi, as well as the international friendly against the Etalons of Burkina Faso in Kaduna on September 10.

“The Big Boss” is already planning ahead as he said the exercise will allow him discover more players for next year’s Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) to be staged in South Africa; a place that is fast becoming a good hunting ground for the Eagles’ gaffer.

“We are calling up 24 home boys in order to identify new players for the 2014 African Nations Championship, for which we have already qualified, said Keshi.

The home based Eagles secured a berth in CHAN 2014 after defeating Ivory Coast 4-3 on aggregate last month.

Meanwhile, Keshi has given a September 2 deadline for the invited Europe-based players to arrive camp for the match against the Malawians.

The 18 foreign-based players are expected to hit Calabar before the deadline. On their part, all the 24 home boys are expected at the Bolton White Apartments, Abuja on 24 August or risk missing out on the chance to fight for one of the five slots allocated to local stars in the double header and more importantly miss out on the chance to impress the technical crew ahead of CHAN.

House committee urges FG, ASUU to end impasse

The House of Representatives Committee on Education on Wednesday appealed to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the prolonged strike.

The committee also eulogised the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University, Otuoke, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, for his efforts to establish the new institution on a good footing.

Members of the committee led by its Chairman, Mr. Aminu Suleiman, were in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, to monitor the progress and challenges of the new university.

Suleiman said the committee’s ongoing tour of the federal universities across the country was part of its oversight function of tracking funds contained in the budget.

He lamented that the industrial action by ASUU had persisted but appealed to the union and the government to quickly resolve their areas of differences.

He said the two committees on education in the National Assembly had earlier facilitated the dialogue between ASUU and the government.

Going by the steps taken so far by the government, he expressed optimism that the strike would soon be called off by ASUU.

Recalling the intervention of the committees, he said: “As an institution we are doing the best we could do to ensure the resolution of the strike.

“Government through the facilitation of the National Assembly had a series of meeting with ASUU. When ASUU issued the ultimatum, government was reluctant to meet with them.

“It was at the instance of the National Assembly that we summoned the Secretary to the Government of the Federation alongside the Minister of Labour and Minister of Education and we impressed it upon the government to meet with ASUU. Thereafter we allowed the two parties to go ahead with their negotiation.”

On the Otuoke University, he said members of the committee were excited at the institution’s progress after touring the library, hostels, administrative blocks and other facilities.

Nigeria moving near permanent trauma – Bisi Akande

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief Bisi Akande, on Wednesday said Nigeria is now in a state of near permanent trauma.

He also said the philosophy behind the new merger party is to bring the country back from the brink of collapse.

Akande, who raised the alarm in an address at a meeting of the leaders and elders of the party at Sheraton Hotels, Abuja, said APC would represent and minister to the aspirations of all Nigerians.

He said:” It is common knowledge that our country has for many years now been confronted by fundamental, daunting and multi-dimensional challenges. This is clearly indicated by the recurring crises that bedevil its social fabric, political processes, structure of governance, and indeed, its economic and developmental processes.

“The result is that the nation and its citizenry continue to exist in a state of near permanent trauma.

“In its over 50 years of Independence, Nigeria has suffered seven military coups resulting in 28 years of military rule, the tragedy of a civil war, twelve constitutions, and a little over 20 years of civil democratic rule.

“Added to these are countless incidents of religious, ethnic, political and civil unrests leading to the loss of millions of innocent lives.

“Trapped in a vicious cycle of political crises, social upheavals and economic under-development, Nigeria has become, not only one of the most unstable countries in the world, it is also, regrettably, one of the poorest despite its huge human and material resource endowments.”

Akande said APC emerged to address the challenges confronting the nation.

  • Court orders Mubarak’s release

    Court orders Mubarak’s release

An Egyptian court has ordered the release on bail of former President Hosni Mubarak in a corruption case, BBC reports.

Reports from Cairo suggest he may be freed from prison on Thursday, but the prosecution may still appeal.

The 85-year-old still faces charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the uprising that forced him from power in 2011.

He was sentenced to life in jail last year, but a retrial was later ordered after his appeal was upheld.

That retrial opened in May but Mr. Mubarak has now served the maximum amount of pre-trial detention permitted in the case.

On Wednesday, the court in the capital ordered the release of Mr. Mubarak, said his lawyer and judicial sources.

Asked when Mr. Mubarak could actually leave the prison, his defence lawyer Fareed El-Deeb told Reuters: “Maybe tomorrow.”

The ruling came during a hearing on charges that the former president had accepted gifts from state-run publisher al-Ahram.

Judge Ahmed el-Bahrawi , who is overseeing the case, was quoted by Reuters as saying that the ruling “is final and the prosecution cannot appeal against it.”

Prosecutors have previously brought new charges when courts have ordered Mr. Mubarak’s release – a move intended to keep the ailing ex-leader in detention.
